Report: Antenna TV Launching New Secondary Companion Network; Season Premiere of New Amsterdam Premieres March 2 on NBC

Antenna TV (https://www.antennatv.tv/), Nexstar Media Group's multicast network that launched on January 1, 2011 and airs in 151 TV markets across the U.S. reaching 93% of TV households including WPIX-TV (11.2) New York, KTLA-TV (5.2) Los Angeles, and WGN-TV (9.2) Chicago, is reportedly launching a secondary companion network focusing on possibly only series from the 1980s. Sources tell SitcomsOnline that the rumored new network is set to launch in late 2021. The name of the network and exact programming of the secondary companion network is being kept under wraps, but more information will be coming as soon as everything is official. It could have a mix of current '80s series on Antenna TV and more newly acquired ones. One can hope for some Perfect Strangers, Charles in Charge and Kate & Allie? Keep checking our news blog for continued updates. Antenna TV currently airs many classic sitcoms from the '50s to '90s such as Three's Company, The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time, Who's the Boss?, Bewitched, Father Knows Best, The Facts of Life, and Becker.

Some more spring scheduling news on NBC. The medical drama New Amsterdam will finally begin its third season on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. It will run through June 8, 2021, with a preemption or two mixed in (like for The Voice finale). We last had an all-new episode almost 11 months ago on April 14, 2020. In the series, when Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) took over New Amsterdam, he asked a simple, revolutionary question: "How can I help?" In season three, Max and his team face the daunting task of sustaining that optimism while dealing with a pandemic that exposed the gaping inequities in our health care. Max is no longer content to fix a broken system. He’s determined to tear it down and build something better. The drama stars Ryan Eggold as Max Goodwin, Janet Montgomery as Laura Bloom, Freema Agyeman as Hana Sharpe, Jocko Sims as Floyd Pearson, Tyler Labine as Iggy Frome and Anupam Kher as Anil Kapoor. NBC also announced they will double-up on all-new episodes of The Wall on Monday, Feb. 15 and Monday Feb. 22 from 9-11pm. Weakest Link ends its first season next week (Feb. 8).

One Day at a Time Revived by Pop TV and CBS; WGN America Acquires JAG Starting July 4

Pop TV, now fully owned by CBS Corporation, announced that the critically-acclaimed series One Day at a Time will continue with a new 13-episode fourth season premiering in 2020 after its Netflix concluded after three seasons. The Network shared the news amid fan campaigns rallying behind the series. Produced by Sony Pictures Television, the fourth season of One Day at a Time will air exclusively on Pop. As part of the innovative deal to pick up the new season, One Day at a Time will also be broadcast on the CBS Television Network later in 2020, following its run on Pop. CBS was the home of the original series that aired over 40 years ago.
One Day at a Time, the comedy-drama inspired by Norman Lear's 1975 series of the same name, follows the life of Penelope Alvarez (Screen Actors Guild Award(R) winner Justina Machado), a newly single Army veteran, and her Cuban-American family, as they navigate the ups and downs of life. Now a nurse practitioner, Penelope is raising two strong-willed children. When faced with challenges, Penelope turns to her "old-school" mother Lydia (Emmy(R), Grammy(R), Oscar(R) and Tony(R) winner Rita Moreno), and her building manager Schneider (Todd Grinnell), who has become an invaluable confidant. The series offers a contemporary take on what life looks like in both good and bad times, and how loved ones can help make it all worthwhile. The series also stars Isabella Gomez as Elena Alvarez, Marcel Ruiz as Alex Alvarez and Stephen Tobolowsky as Dr. Berkowitz.

WGN America announced that JAG, the longest running military drama in the history of television, joins the entertaining line-up of fan-favorites at the network. The procedural series is set to premiere with a two-day "JAG of July" marathon on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5 starting at 9:00am ET/8:00am CT. All ten seasons of the series will air in chronological order, making WGN America the sole cable network where audiences can catch the show.
JAG follows an elite legal wing of officers trained as lawyers who investigate, prosecute, and defend those accused of military crimes. JAG stars David James Elliott (Trumbo) as the resourceful Navy lawyer and officer Harmon "Harm" Rabb, Jr. and Catherine Bell (Bruce Almighty) as his equally savvy partner Marine Lieutenant Colonel Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie, who traverse the globe together investigating and prosecuting crimes, and acts of terrorism and espionage related to the Navy and Marine Corps.

WGN America Picks Up Two Original Series; Pop TV Orders New Comedy Florida Girls
WGN America unveiled two new originals, exhibiting the full spectrum of the beloved detective procedural genre: lighthearted detective comedy Carter, starring Jerry O'Connell (Mistresses, Sliders, Crossing Jordan), Sydney Poitier Heartsong (Chicago P.D.) and Kristian Bruun (Orphan Black), and crime drama Gone, starring Chris Noth (Sex and the City, Law & Order, The Good Wife), Leven Ramblin (The Hunger Games) and Danny Pino (CSI: Miami). Carter is a sharp, 10-episode series that revolves around Harley Mackay (O'Connell), an actor playing a detective on a hit television show until he is forced to retreat to his sleepy hometown after an embarrassing public meltdown in Hollywood. Now that he's back, he taps into his acting experience to become a real-life detective, partnering with his two best friends, Sam Shaw (Heartsong) and Dave Leigh (Bruun). Carter will make its debut on WGN America on Tuesday, August 7.
Gone follows the story of Kit "Kick" Lannigan (Rambin), survivor of a highly publicized child-abduction case, and Frank Novak (Noth), the FBI agent who rescued her. Determined never to fall victim again, Kick trains herself in martial arts and the use of firearms. She finds her calling when Novak persuades her to join a special task force he created dedicated to solving abductions and missing persons cases. Paired with former Army intelligence officer John Bishop (Pino), Kick brings her unique understanding of a predator's mind to the team. The series is set to premiere early 2019.
Four girls living in Small Town, Florida confront their stagnant lives when their only ambitious friend moves away to follow her dreams, in Florida Girls, an original scripted half-hour comedy commissioned by Pop TV, a network owned by CBS Corporation and Lionsgate. Florida Girls heads into production this fall. Lionsgate, which recently acquired a majority ownership of 3 Arts Entertainment, will produce Florida Girls alongside 3 Arts and JAX Media. Series creator and executive producer Laura Chinn (The Mick) will star in the 10-episode series, which is based on Chinn's real-life.
Lilly Burns of JAX Media directed the pilot and serves as an executive producer of the series. Tony Hernandez of JAX Media, and Oly Obst and Josh Lieberman of 3 Arts Entertainment also serve as executive producers. Florida Girls follows a quartet of female friends who are partying under the poverty line while navigating very relatable problems as they try to better their situations. Living in a dilapidated beach town full of alcoholics, these street-wise women haphazardly attempt to find self-worth and learn to "adult" in a society that deems poor, uneducated women as valueless. Their backbone ultimately lies within their tight-knit, non-judgmental and loving friendship.

Fri-Yay: Roseanne Return Sparks Interest; WGN America Acquires Last Man Standing
by Vincent
Tuesday night, Roseanne returned to ABC after over 20 years, and in doing so it set both the internet and TV airwaves on fire. Roseanne's premiere scored 18.4 million viewers and a 5.2 in the demo. That's the best rating for an entertainment series all season (aside from the post-Superbowl episode of This Is Us) and the best ratings point for a sitcom in six years - and given ratings decline, arguably the most impressive ratings point for a sitcom in over a decade. The show, much like its original run, also has been causing some controversy among those who question whether someone like Roseanne Barr, who in recent years has spouted some fairly divisive opinions on her social media accounts and in interviews, should be given such a huge platform. Additionally, many fans of the original series have taken issue with the fact that Roseanne's character is being portrayed as a Trump supporter, when in the original series she seemed like a generally progressive woman advocating for topics such as female and LGBT rights. Needless to say, the Roseanne premiere is sparking a lot of interest, a lot of controversy, and a lot of chatter in general - much like the original run of the series.
While I don't personally agree with Roseanne's real-life politics, I think the show is an excellent way to portray our current political divide in the country. By showing a real family rift caused by the 2016 election and the messy political arguments that came after (and, in many ways, led to the election), people on both sides of the political coin may be able to consider viewpoints aside from their own, and do so while laughing along to a generally funny, well-written and well-acted sitcom. I've highlighted shows like One Day at a Time and The Carmichael Show several times in this column, which in many ways seemed to contribute to a television landscape where a show like Roseanne that deals with controversial topics in funny ways could thrive. And the Roseanne reboot, based on its strong first two episodes, has the potential to live up to these series in its boldness. It may not always be a comfortable viewing experience, but maybe that's what we need right now - to be removed from our comfort zones. Given Roseanne's blockbuster ratings, it seems that this might be exactly what American TV audiences have been craving.
WGN America announced it is expanding its slate to include the popular family sitcom Last Man Standing. The network will be adding the Tim Allen (Home Improvement, Toy Story) comedy to its programming schedule, starting Monday, April 30, 2018. The sitcom has been popular in reruns airing in local broadcast syndication, CMT and Freeform. It will continue on all those outlets when WGN America starts airing it, as we believe WGN has gotten Hallmark's rights, which stopped the series in late 2017. From 20th Century Fox Television and distributed by Twentieth Television, Last Man Standing follows the life of Mike Baxter (Tim Allen), hilarity-ensuing family man and the marketing director for an iconic outdoor sporting goods store. While Mike is "king of the hill" at work, he's the odd man out in a home that is dominated by strong-willed women -- namely his wife, Vanessa (Nancy Travis), and their three daughters, 20- year-old Kristin (Amanda Fuller), 17-year-old Mandy (Molly Ephraim) and 13-year-old Eve (Kaitlyn Dever). After being a stay-at-home mom for years, Vanessa recently returned to the workplace, requiring Mike to be more hands on than he's ever been before.
The Emmy(R)-nominated show starring Tim Allen, Nancy Travis (The Bill Engvall Show, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, The Princess Diaries) is created by Jack Burditt (30 Rock, Frasier, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). Tim Allen, Matt Berry (Desperate Housewives, Reba), Marty Adelstein (Prison Break, Teen Wolf), Becky Clements (Aquarius), Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Arrival), Richard Baker (The Santa Clause, The Drew Carrey Show), and Rick Messina (The Santa Clause, The Drew Carrey Show) serve as executive producers of the series.

WGN America Welcomes Classic Crime Drama; Fa La La La with GSN
WGN America announced the acquisition of Murder She Wrote, the classic crime drama starring Angela Lansbury, set to launch on the network Monday, January 1, 2018 at 9:00am ET / 8:00am CT. Walker Texas Ranger will be off the line-up.
Murder She Wrote follows mystery writer and amateur detective Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) - a down-to-earth, middle-aged widow – who ferrets out the criminals in idyllic Cabot Cove, Maine, which apparently is the murder capital of the United States for the show's 12-season run. Though while traveling, she uncovers a fair number of killers as well. Fri-Yay: Bob's Burgers Tops Sunday Night on Fox; WGN America Gives Thanks with M*A*S*H and More!
by Vincent
If there's a show on network TV that is the epitome of the underdog, it's Bob's Burgers. Bob's Burgers debuted in 2011 to relatively little fanfare - at the time, FOX's animation line-up was dominated by Seth MacFarlane shows (and the ever-present Simpsons), and Bob's Burgers stuck out like a sore thumb. Early episodes of Bob's Burgers tried to use some MacFarlane-esque shock humor to blend in with the line-up, but it was clearly it wasn't really what the show was comfortable with. Bob's received a lukewarm critical reception and so-so ratings, but it showed enough promise that FOX renewed it for a second season and some critics began noticing its potential to become something bigger. Seven years later, Bob's Burgers has become something of a low-key phenomenon, a critical and fan darling that's beginning to finally reach mainstream acceptance.
Bob's Burgers started churning out consistently great episodes in its second season, and by its third season it had become established as one of the best comedies on television. The show's blend of off-the-wall humor with sweet family moments yearns back memories of early Simpsons episodes with a bit of an absurdist, Adult Swim-like touch. The show's biggest feature is its relentless optimism and acceptance of just about everyone that turns up in its weirdo family's orbit, and it's that acceptance that has made Bob's Burgers such a hit with its devoted fan-base. It has begun to occupy that same "alternative" young audience space that animated comedies like The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy achieved before it, but with a more pronounced sweet spot than any of those shows. Eight seasons in, Bob's Burgers seems to only be getting more popular - it was FOX's highest-rated program last week (beating out The Simpsons and Family Guy). It's been a long road, but Bob's finally seems to be getting the recognition it deserves as the weird, sweet, and incredibly funny comedy that it is.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Leah Remini to Join Kevin Can Wait Cast as a Regular; WGN America Cancels Underground
HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
- Leah Remini made a brief reunion with Kevin James in the sitcom Kevin Can Wait last season, but that reunion is about to get much bigger in the second season as she becomes a regular cast member. (Variety)
- The same hackers who posted unaired episodes of Netflix's Orange is the New Black is now targeting ABC, although it isn't clear what they intend to leak. (Deadline)
- WGN America has cancelled Underground, which is just another sign that new parent company Sinclair intends to take the network into another direction, though it isn't exactly clear what that direction is right now. (Deadline)
- Elena Verdugo, known for her role of nurse Consuelo Lopez on Marcus Welby, M.D., died this week at age 92. (LA Times)
- We sort of thought that the evening newscasts on the three broadcast networks were finally returning to stability after the role became a revolving door in 2004 and 2005 (when decades long staples left; specificially Tom Brokaw retired, Peter Jennings died, and Dan Rather was fired), but CBS has decided to shake things up again, announcing that Scott Pelley is out the door. (Washington Post)
- NBC has made a significant change to their fall schedule, which means This Is Us won't be moving after all, but more importantly (to us), Thursday night will be restored to a full two hours of comedy as it was meant to be. (SitcomsOnline)

The Goldbergs Heads to Syndication in Fall 2017; The Simpsons TV on FX App
Sony Pictures Television announced that Tribune Broadcasting's owned or operated stations in 18 major markets will serve as the launch group for the hit family comedy The Goldbergs when it debuts in broadcast syndication in the fall of 2017. Collectively, these 18 Tribune stations reach nearly 37% of U.S. TV Households. The Tribune stations that will broadcast the nostalgic, multi-generational comedy series are: WPIX-TV (New York), KTLA-TV (Los Angeles), WGN-TV, (Chicago), WPHL-TV (Philadelphia), KDAF-TV (Dallas), WDCW-TV (Washington DC), KIAH-TV (Houston), KCPQ-TV/KZJO-TV (Seattle), WSFL-TV (Miami), KWGN-TV/KDVR-TV (Denver), KTVI-TV/KPLR-TV (St. Louis), KRCW-TV (Portland, OR), WXIN-TV (Indianapolis), WTIC-TV (Hartford), WDAF-TV (Kansas City), KFOR-TV/KAUT-TV (Oklahoma City), WHNT-TV (Huntsville) and WQAD-TV (Davenport).
Renewed for a fourth season on ABC, The Goldbergs consistently ranks #1 in its time period (8:30pm, Wednesdays) and grows over its lead in (The Middle) among Adults 18 to 49. It is one of very few series to show year-over-year growth in all three seasons. The series will move to Wednesdays at 8pm this fall on ABC to kick off the "ABC Funny" Wednesday block. From a simpler time, known as the '80s, come the VCR-loving, mixtape-making, spandex-wearing Goldbergs. For geeky and movie obsessed youngest child Adam (Sean Giambrone), his wonder years were spent documenting the hilarious and awkward antics of his colorful family. Mom, Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey), is a classic "smother," at her best when she’s meddling, matchmaking and bedazzling her way through life, while dad, Murray (Jeff Garlin), parents from the comfort of his recliner in his underpants. NBC Summer Pilot Review: The Carmichael Show - Premieres Wednesday, Aug. 26; WGN America Announces Launch Date for Prime Crime Block
The Carmichael Show - Wednesdays at 9:00PM & 9:30PM ET/PT on NBC
Premieres Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 9:00PM & 9:30PM ET/PT
by Skees
Cast Details:
Jerrod Carmichael as Jerrod Carmichael
Amber Stevens West as Maxine
David Alan Grier as Joe Carmichael
Loretta Devine as Cynthia Carmichael
Lil Rel Howard as Bobby Carmichael
Jerrod Carmichael (Jerrod) plays the starring role, which is (clearly) named after himself. Carmichael is a stand-up comic based in North Carolina, and previously had a recurring role on the short-lived Fox series The Goodwin Games.
Amber Stevens West (Maxine) plays Jerrod's live-in girlfriend. She is best known for her role on the ABC Family series Greek, but has also had appearances on How I Met Your Mother, 90210, New Girl, and Criminal Minds.
David Alan Grier (Joe) plays the Carmichael family patriarch. Grier started out as a dramatic actor originally, even appearing on Broadway shows, but found his true calling in comedy with In Living Color. He briefly had his own sitcom in the early 2000s with DAG, and later appeared on the ABC series Life with Bonnie. More recently, he appeared in the series Bad Teacher, and has had plenty of movie roles along the way.
Loretta Devine (Cynthia) plays the role of the Carmichael family mother. She is best known for her starring role on Boston Public, and has also had regular roles on Eli Stone and The Client List. She has appeared in several other guest starring roles, including one recurring role on Grey's Anatomy.
Lil Rel Howery (Bobby) plays Jerrod's brother. He is mostly known for his stand-up comedy, but has appeared on the TruTV series Friends of the People.
Pilot Plot:
We have watched the first three episodes for review (the first two of which will air this week), and the plots of them are as follows.
"Pilot" (Airs August 26 at 9:00PM ET)
Jerrod Carmichael is living with his girlfriend, which shouldn't be a huge deal... except he has to figure out how to tell his parents about this. It's not going to be easy, but he has a few tricks up his sleeves to make it a little bit easier.
"Protest" (Airs August 26 at 9:30PM ET)
The Black Lives Matter protests have divided the family just in time for Jerrod's birthday, and things only get more divisive when Maxine and Cynthia decide to join the protests, leaving Jerrod and Joe with their own war back at home.
"Kale" (Airs September 2 at 9:00PM ET)
Jerrod decides to force his parents to eat healthy when they visit his apartment, but in the midst of it, a health scare occurs with his father. Now, he is trying to do whatever he can to see that his father takes care of his health so that nothing worse happens, even if nobody is interested in actually living a healthier lifestyle.
Analysis:
One other small side-note, it really feels weird seeing David Alan Grier playing the role of the father of two grown sons. It seems like it wasn't all that long ago that he was just a young and fresh face on In Living Color (though he was in his 30s at that time even), but now he seems to appropriately fit this role of a character who is said to be 60 years old... which is about how old he is in real life.
Conclusion:
Final Numbers (out of 5 stars):
Watchability: 4/5
Funniness: 3.5/5
Overall: 4/5
Discuss the show after you watch it on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 9:00PM & 9:30PM ET/PT on our message board.

WGN America Turns Primetime Into Prime Crime; Remembering Jack Carter and Writer-Producer Chris Thompson
When WGN America expands its burgeoning slate of high-quality original programming this fall with its "Prime Crime" lineup, it will become the exclusive cable home for two of TV's biggest hit dramas, Elementary (as we announced) and Person of Interest (which we also announced). The two popular procedurals, which will join fan-favorite Blue Bloods on weeknights in prime, will give viewers a binge-worthy opportunity to watch these series from the very beginning, diving into the cases and capers that unfold. In Elementary, Jonny Lee Miller (who plays Sherlock Holmes) and Lucy Liu (who plays Dr. Watson) are a modern-day crime solving duo that cracks the NYPD's most impossible cases; and in Person of Interest, Michael Emerson (in the role of billionaire Harold Finch) and Jim Caviezel (as CIA operative John Reese) prevent violent crimes before they happen with the help of an advanced surveillance system known as "The Machine." Taraji P. Henson, who currently stars in Empire, is a regular in the first four seasons of the series. In the teaser campaign the four main characters face off for the first time in a quick-witted test of who's the better twosome and why. Representing the two most significant acquisitions across cable in 2015, Elementary and Person of Interest continue WGN America's transformation as an entertainment destination with popular originals, including breakout hit Salem, critically lauded Manhattan and upcoming dramas Underground and Outsiders, both premiering next year.

Wonder Years Star Producing WGN America Series; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of February 16, 2015)
A star from The Wonder Years is producing a new upcoming WGN America series. And the star is... Jason Hervey. He of course played the role of Wayne Arnold on the Emmy Award-winning hit series. He parlayed the experience he gained and partnered with Eric Bischoff, his longtime friend, colleague and former President of Time Warner's World Championship Wrestling (WCW), to form Bischoff Hervey Entertainment (BHE TV, LLC). And now he is producing a WGN America series for BHE. Outlaw Country is a one-hour docudrama set in the town of Buckner, Missouri, offering one-of-a-kind access into a unique and dangerous subculture. With a reputation for drug dealing, gun running and robbing the Heartland blind, The Alliance threatens to overtake Kansas City. Outlaw Country follows as an elite team of law enforcement officers attempt to thwart their illegal operations at every pass, doing whatever it takes to break this assemblage of bandits—including running alongside the crew and bending a few laws of their own.
At the heart of this warfare lie two sets of brothers--Mike and Steve Cook, who act as Chief of Police and head of the Buckner Criminal Task Force, respectively, and John and Josh Monk, the pair they suspect are responsible for the town's surge in crime. The series premieres Tuesday, February 24 at 10:00 pm ET/9:00 pm CT on WGN America.

OWN's popular Tyler Perry sitcom For Better or Worse returned last Wednesday night (9/17/14) with its fall premiere episode at 9pm delivering the series' best performance since it debuted on the network one year ago (9/18/13). The premiere episode earned 1.2 million total viewers and a 1.0 rating in the network's key women 25-54 demo. Wednesday night's episode grew double-digits in both the women 25-54 demo (up +52%) and in total viewers (up +52%) vs. the spring season average (4/9/14-6/11/14). Additionally, it ranked #2 in the time period in all of cable for women 25-54. For Better or Worse, about the ups and downs of dating and marriage, centers on Angela Williams (Tasha Smith), the owner of a successful beauty salon, and her husband of 13 years, Marcus (Michael Jai White). Marcus is a former professional football player who is partnered with Richard Ellington (Kent Faulcon) and Joseph Jetson (Jason Olive) on a sports program called "C-Sports Now." Marcus's business relationship with Richard and Joseph is complicated, however, by the fact that Richard is married to Keisha (Kiki Haynes), Marcus's ex-girlfriend and the mother of his teenage daughter. In addition, Joseph's ex-girlfriend, successful real-estate agent Leslie (Crystle Stewart), is Angela's best friend, which sometimes makes it difficult for everyone to keep their business and private lives from mingling. For Better or Worse is produced for OWN by Tyler Perry Studios and is written, directed and executive produced by Tyler Perry.
