SitcomsOnline Digest: Arrested Development Staying on Netflix (and Leaving Hulu); Grey's Anatomy Gets Season 20 Renewal

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're learning about a renewal of a long-running ABC series, getting a look at the revival of Clone High, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • Arrested Development isn't leaving Netflix after all, but it will be leaving Hulu instead, and Disney will also be allowed to sell the entire series (including those produced for Netflix) into linear syndication. (Vulture)
  • It's got a long way to go to beat the longevity of The Simpsons (and it doesn't make it any easier since The Simpsons is still in the race), but get ready for season 20 (yes, 20) of Grey's Anatomy. (Variety)
  • We have our first look at the HBO Max revival of Clone High. (Deadline)
  • The Steve Wilkos Show has been renewed, which is surprising given how many long-running daytime shows have been ending lately. (Deadline)
  • The American Music Awards, like most other awards shows, has been in constant ratings decline (losing about 90% of the audience it had in the 90s, but even losing half of the audience it had just a few years ago), and now it is uncertain as to whether it will even be back this year. (Variety)
  • With so many episodes of The Simpsons, everything eventually has to be based upon things that have happened or will happened, and it seems that an incident involving a Florida principal and the Michaelangelo's David was predicted by the long-running animated series. (Deadline)
  • Rewind TV is celebrating the 45th anniversary of Mork & Mindy and Earth Day with a marathon of Mork & Mindy. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (MARCH 26 - MARCH 31)

  • It's the final binge ever for Decades (though the successor will also feature binges), with this weekend featuring The Mod Squad.
  • Catchy Comedy replaces Decades on Monday, and brings new series with it as well, including Night Court, Full House, All in the Family, Sanford & Son, and Good Times.
  • It's a busy week for animated season premieres, with HouseBroken on Fox on Sunday and American Dad! on TBS on Monday.
  • Unstable, a new comedy starring Rob Lowe, debuts on Netflix on Thursday.

2023 90s Con Recap in Hartford; Bel-Air Gets Season 3 on Peacock

90s Con

That's 4 Entertainment (the people who bring us Christmas Con every year in NJ) had its 2nd Annual 90s Con this weekend (March 17-19) at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, CT. We had a reporter down there to let us know what happened! We had full or partial reunions from various '90s TV shows, movies and music. Sitcom reunions included Saved by the Bell, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Full House, along with classic dramas Beverly Hills 90210, Charmed and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The casts did autograph signings, photo ops and Q&A panels. Among the other cool things fans got to see at the event: They had a slime pit to be "slimed" like Double Dare. They had a table area of a bunch of Nintendo64 machines hooked up to large screens to play nostalgic video games. They had 90s iconic photo ops like the TV, phone booth, newspaper stand, etc. There was a popular 90s cosplay contest. Another cool sighting was iconic movie vehicles including a replica Jurassic Park jeep and the Scooby Doo mystery machine (is that '90s though?). A 90s DJ booth was playing 90s music for fans. There were tons of booths selling 90s nostalgic toys, art, and items. And to close the day, there was a 90s dance party after party Saturday night.

The stars that were on hand were Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Rose McGowan, Brian Krause, Dorian Gregory, Drew Fuller, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, Dave Coulier, Andrea Barber, Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, Kel Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg, Danny Tamberelli, Danica McKellar, Olivia d'Abo, Melissa Joan Hart, Caroline Rhea, Beth Broderick, Jenna Leigh Green, Nate Richert, Kathy Najimy, Thora Birch, Omri Katz, Vinessa Shaw, Jason Marsden, Mario Lopez, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Elizabeth Berkley, Steve Burns, Marc Summers, Jeff Timmons, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, James Masters, Charisma Carpenter, Clare Kramer, Julie Benz, Kristine Sutherland, Marc Blucas, and Rebecca Gayheart.

Last year they had the cast of Family Matters and Boy Meets World on hand, but not this year. Will they return in 2024? How about other popular '90s shows like Step by Step and Perfect Strangers next time? While Hartford gets '90s Con next March, there will be one in Tampa in September of this year. Christmas Con will get a Kansas City version this June before returning to Edison, NJ in December. Stay tuned as we will be on hand for the NJ one once again later this year!

90s Con - Double Dare

New Girl Coming to Hulu and Peacock; Apple TV+ Renews Shrinking for Season 2

New Girl

New Girl, the hugely popular comedy series that ran for seven seasons and continues building its already enormous fan base, is moving from Netlifx to Hulu and Peacock beginning April 17. As part of the shared agreement, Peacock and Hulu will be the dedicated streaming homes of all 146 episodes. New Girl features a young ensemble cast that takes a fresh look at friendship. After a bad break-up, Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel) needs a new place to live. An online search leads her to a great loft … and three single guys she’s never met before. Nick (Jake Johnson), law school dropout turned bartender is the most grounded ... and the most jaded. Schmidt (Max Greenfield) is a hustling young professional who’s pretty proud of his own abs. Winston (Lamorne Morris) is an intensely competitive former athlete who doesn’t know what to do next. Rounding out the group is Jess’ childhood best friend, Cece (Hannah Simone), a model with a killer deadpan. The fivesome realize they need each other more than they thought they would and end up forming a charmingly dysfunctional – or strangely functional – family.

New Girl included many prominent guest stars over the course of its run, each eager to enter the crazy world of Jess and her cohorts. The guest star lineup featured Megan Fox, Damon Wayans Jr., Justin Long, Josh Gad, Michaela Watkins, Dermot Mulroney, Lizzy Caplan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rob Reiner, Linda Cardellini, Adam Brody, Brenda Song and Carla Gugino. Musicians also wanted to join the fun as evidenced by Prince guest starring as himself and Taylor Swift having a cameo.

Mary Tyler Moore Film Premieres This May on HBO; Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head Returns for Season 2

Being Mary Tyler Moore

HBO Original documentary film Being Mary Tyler Moore, directed by Emmy® winning filmmaker James Adolphus (Soul of a Nation) and produced by Lena Waithe (A Thousand and One), Debra Martin Chase (Harriet), and Ben Selkow (HBO's Q: Into The Storm), debuts this May on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. With unprecedented access to Mary Tyler Moore's vast archive, Being Mary Tyler Moore chronicles the screen icon whose storied career spanned sixty years. Weaving Moore's personal narrative with the beats of her professional accomplishments, the film highlights her groundbreaking roles and the indelible impact she had on generations of women who came after her.

Moore's career broke boundaries in different eras, most notably in her comedic roles as Laura Petrie in the '60s sitcom, The Dick Van Dyke Show and as single career woman Mary Richards on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the '70s, both of which put her at the forefront of female representation on television and cemented her as a role model for independent working women. Acknowledging that much of herself was woven into her sunny characters, she nevertheless struggled behind the scenes, dealing privately with immeasurable tragedy in her personal life, some of which was echoed in her portrayal of a grieving mother in the 1980 film Ordinary People, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. In the last thirty-five years of her life, Moore went through a transformative period of self-discovery, moving to New York City, finding true love, and going on to become an impactful global advocate for diabetes research. Being Mary Tyler Moore documents the life of a complex artist who shifted the dynamics of how women were portrayed on television, had far-reaching influence on the business through her own production company, and helped affect great change through her work as International Chairman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Lending their voices to the film are family members, colleagues and those whose lives Mary Tyler Moore impacted including directors Rob Reiner, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, and Jim Burrows, actors Ed Asner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lena Waithe, Phylicia Rashad, Bernadette Peters, and Joel Grey, writers and producers Allan Burns, James L. Brooks, Norman Lear, Debra Martin Chase, Treva Silverman, Susan Silver, and Moore's husband, Dr. S. Robert Levine.

Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head

Paramount+ announced that the second season of adult animated series Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head will premiere two episodes on the service Thursday, April 20 in the U.S. and Canada, and in Australia and the U.K. on Friday, April 21, with further international markets to follow. In the second season of Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head, Beavis and Butt-Head triumphantly return as two guys who like things that are cool and don't like things that suck. Created and voiced by writer, producer and director Mike Judge, the characters of Beavis and Butt-Head originated in Judge's 1992 short film Frog Baseball, which was broadcast by MTV's animation showcase "Liquid Television." After MTV commissioned a full series around the characters, Beavis and Butt-Head ran for seven seasons, from March 8, 1993 to Nov. 28, 1997. The series was revived in 2011 with an eighth season airing on MTV. During its initial run, Beavis and Butt-Head received widespread critical acclaim for its satirical, scathing commentary on society. The show's popularity spawned various related media, including the theatrical film Beavis and Butt-Head Do America in 1996.
