Lena and Martin were once madly in love. But, like many marriages, time and circumstance eventually took their toll and the romance disappeared. Finding themselves in a platonic marriage and acting more like a pair of camp counselors wrangling their kids than a couple hopelessly in love, they decide that everyone's lives would be better served if they got a divorce. Still wanting the best for their three kids and facing a daunting real estate market, the couple decides to "Bird Nest" instead. One parent will live in the house as the "on-duty" parent taking care of the kids, while the "off-duty" parent will live in the detached garage, doing whatever he or she pleases while switching off every other week. Could being apart ultimately lead to them getting back together?

Jenna Fischer (Lena) is best known for her role as Pam Beesly on the long-running NBC sitcom The Office. She has also appeared in films such as Blades of Glory, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Hall Pass.

Oliver Hudson (Martin) is an actor known for his role on the TV series Scream Queens, Nashville, and the long-running sitcom Rules of Engagement. He is also the brother of actress Kate Hudson and son of Goldie Hawn.

Bobby Lee (Arthur) is a comedian and actor known for his long-running stint on the sketch comedy series MADtv, and for his role in films such as Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Pineapple Express and The Dictator.

Diane Farr (Maya) is an actress best known for her roles in the hit shows NUMB3RS and Rescue Me, as well as guest appearances on series such as Modern Family, Private Practice and CSI.

Lindsay Price (Camille) is an American actress previously known for her roles on soap operas, from daytime soaps such as All My Children and The Bold and the Beautiful to the primetime soaps such as Beverly Hills 90210, Lipstick Jungle and Eastwick.

Pilot Plot:

"Pilot" (Airs Tuesday, March 27 at 9:30PM ET)

After breaking the news to their friends and family about their divorce, Lena has to deal with her son Mason's growing pains. Meanwhile, Martin, still feeling guilty about refusing to dance with Lena at their wedding, secretly tries to atone for his oversight and surprise his ex-wife with new moves.

Analysis:

The most interesting thing about Splitting Up Together is the creators behind it. The show was created and is executive produced by Emily Kapnek, and also has Ellen DeGeneres credited as an executive producer. Kapnek previously created cult favorite ABC sitcoms Suburgatory and Selfie. Suburgatory started off as a promising hit with lots of positive buzz (and ratings), but gradually faded and was quietly canceled after its third season. Selfie only lasted for half of a season, but it garnered a following in that short time and remains a popular brilliant but cancelled: cult hit. What's notable about both shows, though, is that they were able to garner followings based on their lovable, quirky characters and gradual yet effective warmth and ability to tug on the heartstrings. Both shows had big concepts (in the case of Suburgatory a suburban satire, in the case of Selfie a shallow millennial woman learning how to care about people), but quietly deconstructed those concepts to reveal the true human beings behind them. Splitting Up Together has a similarly big concept, and in these early episodes for review, it shows potential of moving past it and revealing the depths of its characters - but it doesn't quite get there yet.

Splitting Up Together's pilot episode is a little boring, frankly - it gets a lot of plot out of the way and is light on jokes, but clearly has the entire cast putting in their all. And the cast is very game for whatever comes their way, particularly Jenna Fischer, whose first major sitcom role since The Office finds her a lovable anchor of the series. Future episodes begin to allow her to have a little more fun, and as expected, she handles it with aplomb. If I have one major concern with the series, it's that these early episodes are clearly laying a path to get its central couple back together, and the show is far more interesting examining why their marriage doesn't work than when it's suggesting that they should get back together. It would be incredibly generic and predictable for this to turn into another "will they/won't they" series, and I hope the glimmers of something more interesting is the direction the series goes down in the future.

Final Thoughts:

Splitting Up Together has an excellent cast and team of creators behind it, and there is potential for it to live up to the name of those involved in its early episodes, even if much of the show's early goings are a bit bland and predictable. Hopefully, the show will follow Emily Kapnek's former ABC sitcoms and begin leaning into its more interesting, character-building side and utilize all of its talent to their best of their abilities.

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're getting even more highlights from the TCA press tour, we're learning that NBC is really, really interested in reboots, and we're finally hearing about a DVD release for a short-lived 70s sitcom that we were promised years ago. Let's get going!

Claim to Fame: Nicholas D'Agosto has been acting on screen for nearly two decades, but he didn't start getting regular TV roles until recently, with Masters of Sex and Gotham. Most recently, though, he was cast in the starring role on the NBC Trial and Error, which a lot of people (myself included) sort of assumed would be a burn off series that was thrown on the network mid-season. But it was actually a good series and did well enough to be get a late renewal for a second season. It's not entirely clear which cast members will return for the second season, as each season of the series revolves around a different character and case, but D'Agosto and some of the others are sure to return.

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we've got news of a new cast addition on a CBS sitcom that'll make something new look a lot more like something old, we're hearing about a cancellation of an original series at WGN America that signals larger changes that are likely in the horizon, and NBC is making some changes to their fall lineup that will make Thursday nights look a lot more familiar again. Let's get going!

Who to Follow: Sharon Gless (Twitter)

Claim to Fame: We're going back in time just a little bit (though not completely, because she hasn't retired from acting) with Sharon Gless, who is probably best known for her role of Christine Cagney on the series Cagney & Lacey. Actually, she was not the first or even the second person to play that role. Originally, in the pilot movie, Loretta Swit (of M*A*S*H fame) played the role, and was replaced by Meg Foster once it became a series. The series was cancelled after the first season, but after some negotiating about retooling the show (including a demand that Meg Foster be replaced because the network executives felt that she wasn't "feminine" enough), it was brought back for a second season with Gless in the role. And when she took on that role, the series thrived, although there were still bumps and cancellation threats almost every season. Her career is actually far more extensive than Cagney & Lacey, though, as she also had a recurring role on Marcus Welby, M.D., a regular role on Switch, and then went on to do lots of made-for-TV movies throughout the 80s and 90s in addition to her role on Cagney & Lacey. By the late 90s, of course, made-for-TV movies sort of went out of style, but that didn't stop her from making it back into series roles, including regular roles on both Queer as Folk and Burn Notice. Despite that extensive career, her "sitcom" career is limited to one guest star role on The Bob Newhart Show, so we imagine that she must really prefer dramas. In any event, it wouldn't be surprising to see her pop up again in another role, and we hope to see just that... or maybe even just one sitcom guest appearance to see her in a different light.

Our Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows weekly report will now move to Sundays, because now we have a new feature from one of our writers, Vincent, that will dive into the week in sitcoms. The new feature is called Fri-Yay, so that means a look back on some of the best of comedy this past week or two! Happy Fri-Yay!

These days, sitcoms kind of come in all different shapes and sizes. If you're a sitcom traditionalist, preferring classical multi-camera set up with plenty of silly hijinks and audience laughter, there are plenty of shows for you that still exist - from network comedies like The Big Bang Theory and Kevin Can Wait to "reboots" of classic sitcoms on Netflix such as Fuller House and One Day at a Time. There are also still plenty of smart, slick, modern single-camera sitcoms with in the vein of The Office and Modern Family - some of my favorite contemporary examples include NBC's Superstore and Fox's Brooklyn Nine-Nine. But with the rise of streaming and "peak TV" has come with it a new type of sitcom. These sitcoms follow the sitcom mold - they're about 20-30 minutes long, are filled with jokes and lovable characters, and generally tell stories on an episode-by-episode basis. But they're also a little more complex than your average sitcom, are more comfortable telling serialized stories along with their episode-by-episode story lines, and aren't as constructed to the network-mandated act structure of a network (or even cable) sitcom. They're sitcoms designed for streaming services - essentially, they're sitcoms tailor-made for a new age.

Two of these streaming sitcoms - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Master of None, both Netflix originals - released new seasons this past few weeks. And both of these seasons featured plenty of examples of why both have become buzzed about and beloved cultural hits. Master of None featured two episodes in its season that may wind up being my two favorite episodes of television of this entire year - "New York, I Love You" (a series of disconnected vignettes about peripheral characters on the outskirts of its protagonist Dev's New York life) and "Thanksgiving" (a coming out story of Dev's best friend Denise that's perhaps the most raw and honest coming out story I've ever seen on TV.) These two episodes feature very little of Master of None's protagonist and have nothing to do with the show's central premise or storyline – they’re entirely experimental. And yet, they're some of the most fascinating and refreshing TV you'll find right now. Similarly, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's third season has some of the best joke writing you could possibly find, and there were several moments where I had to pause my TV because I was laughing so hard. What's even more impressive is the way the show weaves some very dark subject matter between these jokes, revolving around the horrors of Kimmy's past, which she spent being held captive by a madman who convinced her the world had ended. Kimmy started out as a network sitcom (the first season was written for NBC before they sold it to Netflix), but the show's Netflix home has allowed it to gradually uncover the horror of Kimmy's past while still keeping its joke-a-second pace rolling.

Still, while the freedom of Netflix allows these shows to flourish in many ways, there are also some ways where I feel these sitcoms could actually benefit from some of the tightness of network programming. The second season of Master of None spends a large amount of its time on a humdrum romance arc between Dev and a woman he meets in Italy named Francesca, cultivating in an episode that's 45 minutes long and entirely devoted to their relationship. The story is never as interesting as the show thinks it is, and I have to wonder if perhaps some creative restraints may have guided Ansari to either developing the story better or at least shortening it in places (like, maybe a 25 minute episode instead of 45 minutes?). Similarly, there are parts of Kimmy Schmidt's third season that feel like total misfires, particularly in the show's largely unfunny satire of college students that never quite finds its target. And yet, without any real network notes or ability for audience response to influence creative direction, the shows keep going with plotlines and beats that clearly aren't working. I wouldn't want Master of None or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to be network sitcoms, as I wouldn't want to lose their heir of experimentation, even if it means they sometimes lack consistency. But they're also signs that the traditional method of doing television may not be completely dead yet.

CBS has announced Fall 2017 primetime premiere dates. Premiere week opens with The Big Bang Theory at 8:00 PM, leading into the Special Series Premiere of Young Sheldon at 8:30 PM, and the New Comedy Me, Myself & I at 9:30 PM, on Monday, Sept. 25. New Drama SEAL Team joins Survivor and Criminal Minds when they premiere Wednesday, Sept. 27. Wisdom of the Crowd debuts Sunday, Oct. 1 at approx. 8:30 (after NFL), followed by the Season Premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles at approx. 9:30 PM. On Monday, Oct. 2, New Comedy 9JKL premieres at 8:30 PM, following The Big Bang Theory. CBS' Thursday Night Entertainment Lineup returns following the conclusion of Thursday Night Football on Nov. 2 with The Big Bang Theory at 8:00 PM, New Comedy Young Sheldon at 8:30 PM, Mom at 9:00 PM, Life in Pieces at 9:30 PM and New Drama S.W.A.T. at 10:00 PM. It's alright, cause he's saved by the bell! CBS announced Mario Lopez as host of the new live-action game show Candy Crush, based on the globally renowned mobile game franchise. Produced by Pulse Creative in association with Lionsgate Television, King Ltd. and CBS Television Studios, Candy Crush premieres Sunday, July 9 at 9:00PM, ET/PT on the CBS Television Network. In the mobile game Candy Crush Saga, players match colorful candies in combinations of three or more to win points, defeat obstacles and progress through more than 2,000 levels. Candy Crush Saga and its sister title, Candy Crush Soda Saga, are two of the top 10 grossing mobile games in the U.S. On average, 18 billion game rounds of Candy Crush Saga are played every month around the world*.

In the new CBS series, the game that has become a worldwide phenomenon comes to life as teams of two people use their wits and physical agility to compete on enormous, interactive game boards featuring next generation technology. Teams will use their entire bodies to swing, slide and swipe to make matches in order to conquer Candy Crush and be crowned the champions.

Leah Remini will reunite with her former TV husband, Kevin James, when she guest stars in the two-part first season finale of new comedy Kevin Can Wait, Monday, May 1 and Monday, May 8 from 8:00-8:30 PM, ET/PT on the CBS Television Network. James and Remini starred together for nine seasons on the hit series The King of Queens, also on CBS. In the two-part finale, Kevin agrees to come out of retirement briefly to reprise his undercover assignment in an ongoing police investigation where he and fellow cop Vanessa Cellucci (Remini) will, once again, pose as husband and wife.

Kevin Can Wait stars Kevin James, Erinn Hayes, Taylor Spreitler, Mary-Charles Jones, James DiGiacomo, Ryan Cartwright, Lenny Venito, Gary Valentine and Leonard Earl Howze. Kevin James, Rock Reuben, Rob Long, Jeff Sussman, Andy Fickman, Tony Sheehan and Steve Mosko are executive producers for CBS Television Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television. As recently announced, Kevin Can Wait has been renewed for the 2017-2018 season on the CBS Television Network.

CBS announced early renewals of 18 returning series for the 2017-2018 season (well, 16 actually since two were already previously announced). Additional returning series pick-ups for next season will be announced at a later date. The shows renewed to date include 6 comedies, 9 dramas, 1 reality series, 2 newsmagazines and a roster of hit programs across every night of the week. The Big Bang Theory and NCIS were already renewed earlier. The 16 series new pick-ups for 2017-18 season are NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Bull, Kevin Can Wait, Blue Bloods, Hawaii Five-0, Scorpion, Survivor, Life in Pieces, Madam Secretary, MacGyver, Mom, Man with a Place, Superior Donuts, 48 Hours, and 60 Minutes. These renewals includes 5 freshman shows are part of the Network's early renewals, including Bull, Kevin Can Wait, MacGyver, Man with a Plan and Superior Donuts.

There were no news on series such as 2 Broke Girls, Criminal Minds, The Great Indoors, Pure Genius, The Odd Couple, Training Day, Code Black, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Elementary and The Amazing Race. A few of those will get renewed, but no word yet. So stay tuned!

A&E Networks had their upfront last night. Lifetime's mission to lead entertainment through female-centric storytelling continues with the greenlight of three new high-profile movies: Flint, starring Cher; Watcher in the Woods, starring Anjelica Huston; and I Am Elizabeth Smart featuring Elizabeth Smart as executive producer and on-screen narrator. Supporting Lifetime's new brand mantra, "Possibility is Power," forthcoming movie and series tent poles reimagine what is possible for women today while championing diverse role models and celebrating our evolving and complex ideas of womanhood. No one does this better than Cat Deeley and her new unscripted series at Lifetime, This Time Next Year, along with fierce television and fashion personality Yolanda Hadid in her new unscripted series to premiere later this year, Model Moms (wt).

Meanwhile at A&E, the iconic, genre-defining series which won countless industry awards, Biography, is returning to A+E Networks after five years as a re-imagined global, linear and digital non-fiction franchise. The Emmy Award-winning Biography, which will focus on meaningful events or personalities and their impact on our culture, will begin to roll out on A&E, HISTORY and Lifetime domestically and internationally across all platforms beginning this spring. Initial projects under the Biography banner include Biggie Smalls, Vladimir Putin, Tupac Shakur, John Gotti Jr., Elizabeth Smart, Mike Tyson and David Koresh.

Kevin James is returning to his stand-up roots with an all-new comedy special for Netflix, the world's leading Internet TV network. The veteran comic's latest special, slated to shoot later this year, will launch globally on Netflix in 2018. A comedian, producer, writer and Emmy-nominated actor, James is an established and well-respected staple in entertainment today. Discovered at the 1996 Montreal Comedy Festival -- and unwittingly taking the first step in what would become an illustrious career -- he signed a network development deal which lead to the creation of his 1998 CBS smash-hit The King of Queens. The sitcom, starring and executive-produced by James, ran for nine seasons and garnered the actor a 2006 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. While Queens wrapped its run in 2007, it still continues to air daily and find a new audience in syndication around the world. James currently stars in and executive-produces the CBS sitcom Kevin Can Wait, which debuted in 2016. He'll next appear in the Netflix original film Sandy Wexler, launching globally April 14.

TBS's stable of original comedies continues to grow with the straight-to-series pick-up of a new series from comedy superstar and multiple Emmy® nominee Tracy Morgan (30 Rock). The untitled series is being created and executive-produced by Jordan Peele (Key & Peele) and John Carcieri (Vice Principals). Morgan will also serve as executive producer, along with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (Two and a Half Men) and Joel Zadak of Principato Young (Key & Peele). The series is produced by Studio T, TBS & TNT's in-house production studio. After being released on good behavior from a 15-year prison stint, Tracy is shocked to see just how much the world has changed in his absence. Returning to his newly gentrified Brooklyn neighborhood, Tracy discovers that his former girlfriend has married an affable, successful white man, who is helping raise his twin sons he never knew existed. Wanting nothing more than to connect with his kids, but having neither the money to support them nor himself, Tracy falls back on the skills he learned in prison to make ends meet while treading on unfamiliar territory. TBS has ordered 10 episodes of this single-camera comedy series, which looks to capture the rawness of Tracy's stand up persona while also commenting on race relations, the Gen X/Millennial gap and the American penal system.

This announcements mark the latest phase in TBS's programming and brand evolution, which began in January with the premiere of Angie Tribeca and continued with the debuts of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee in February, The Detour in April and Wrecked in June. All four shows are certified hits, ranking among cable's Top 10 new comedies of 2016. They will soon be joined by the other-worldly comedy People of Earth, starring Wyatt Cenac (The Daily Show) and premiering on Halloween, and Search Party, a dark comedy starring Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) and premiering Nov. 21. In 2017, The Guest Book, a new comedy from Greg Garcia (The Millers), will make its debut.

CBS has given full season orders to three new series, including the #1 and #2 new series in total viewers, drama Bull and sitcom Kevin Can Wait, and Friday's new series, MacGyver. The three shows, along with the Network's returning hit programs, have helped CBS win the first three weeks of the season for the eighth consecutive year. In addition, all three have improved their time period, compared to a year ago. Bull stars Michael Weatherly, Freddy Rodriguez, Geneva Carr, Jaime Lee Kirschner, Annabelle Attanasio and Chris Jackson. Kevin Can Wait stars Kevin James, Erinn Hayes, Taylor Spreitler, Mary-Charles Jones, James DiGiacomo, Ryan Cartwright, Lenny Venito, Gary Valentine and Leonard Earl Howze. On Oct. 24, Kevin Can Wait moves to its new regular time period on Mondays at 8:00PM ET/PT, leading into the series premiere of Man with a Plan at 8:30PM ET/PT. MacGyver stars Lucas Till, George Eads, Sandrine Holt, Justin Hires and Tristan Mays.

Claim to Fame: We're continuing with our theme of stars of the new fall sitcoms this week with Erinn Hayes, who plays Donna on Kevin Can Wait (debuting Monday night on CBS). Hayes got her start with some minor roles, as well as a somewhat odd role of playing Pam Dawber in Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Mork and Mindy back in 2005 (when these "behind the scenes" of classic TV series specials were big), and found her first recurring role in the sitcom Kitchen Confidential, which only lasted half a season. Her first big taste of success has come from the series Childrens Hospital on Adult Swim. She had a brief time as a star of a broadcast network sitcom in 2012 with the NBC sitcom Guys with Kids, but now, she is hoping for success with a role in a sitcom that stars a proven sitcom star, Kevin James, in Kevin Can Wait.

Kevin Can Wait stars Kevin James as a newly retired police officer looking forward to spending carefree, quality time with his wife and three kids, only to discover he faces tougher challenges at home than he ever did on the streets. Kevin's retirement plans consist of chilling with his family and having epic adventures with fellow retirees Goody, his former partner and close friend, and Duffy, his oldest pal, as well as his brother, Kyle, a fireman whose closest encounter with a blaze would be a grease fire in the firehouse kitchen. However, Kevin's dream is jeopardized when he discovers that Donna, his wonderful wife of 20 years, has shielded him from key family info while he worked overtime protecting the community. Their usually reliable eldest, Kendra is dropping out of college so she can support her unemployed fiancé, Chale, while he designs the next “big app”; his teenage daughter, Sara has budding anger-management issues; and their youngest, Jack is a bit of a hypochondriac. For now, his plans for a cushy life will have to wait, because Kevin has work to do, and this time, his family is his beat.

Analysis:

Kevin Can Wait is a multi-camera sitcom from CBS Television Studios, Sony Pictures Television, Mohawk Productions and Hey Eddie Productions. Bruce Helford, Rock Reuben, Kevin James, Jeff Sussman and Andy Fickman are executive producers. The pilot episode was directed by Andy Fickman (Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, The Game Plan, Liv and Maddie).

In the "Pilot" episode, Kevin talks to his wife and two of his children about his retirement party for later that night. Donna gives him a retirement gift - a gyrobowl. Kevin talks to his three friends and gives a PowerPoint presentation for his retirement plans. His brother, Kyle, brings over some chili. Kevin and Donna interview an elderly woman for an apartment tenant. Their daughter, Kendra, returns from college and brings him some burgers. Donna and Kendra talk about how she should introduce her boyfriend to Kevin. Kevin and Donna then interview Mr. Alvarez, a cop with a drinking problem. Kendra introduces Todd and Chale to Kevin. He's surprised to learn which one is her boyfriend and how long they have been dating. Kevin goes to the diner to talk to Kendra about her boyfriend. He comes up with a plan to help them. After talking to Donna about his job search, Kevin races go carts and has a paintball fight.

Overall, this is a very solid and funny pilot. It provides a basic introduction to the characters and the premise of the show. This is very much a vehicle for Kevin James. He's in almost every scene. He has some good one-liners and shows off his physical comedy skills. It will be interesting to see how they divide up the time between Kevin's family and his friends. It almost seems like they have too many characters. The middle daughter appears only in the opening scene. The son appears in a few scenes. The oldest daughter, Kendra, and her boyfriend Chale seem to have good-sized roles. Kevin James and Leah Remini had great chemistry in The King of Queens, but I don't see it immediately with Erinn Hayes in the pilot. It will take some time to develop that same kind magic.

Kevin Can Wait features a talented and experienced cast. Kevin James returns to his first television starring role since The King of Queens ended its nine season run in 2007. Erinn Hayes has appeared in several short-lived sitcoms. This show will very likely be her first broadcast network series to run more than one season. Taylor Spreitler brings comedic experience from Melissa & Joey. She is a stand-out in the pilot episode. Mary-Charles Jones and James DiGiacomo are not seen much in the pilot, so hopefully they are given more lines and scenes in future episodes. Ryan Cartwright has some funny lines. Gary Valentine is Kevin James' older brother. He played Danny Heffernan, Doug Heffernan's cousin in The King of Queens. This time he plays his brother. Kevin's buddies are played by Leonard Earl Howze and Lenny Venito.

The series is set in Massapequa, New York. It's being filmed entirely on Long Island at Gold Coast Studios in Bethpage, New York. This is the first network prime-time series to be shot on Long Island in front of a live studio audience. There is just one outdoor scene at the end of the pilot episode. It will be interesting to see how they take advantage of shooting there to make the location another character.

Conclusion:

Kevin James, one of the kings of primetime comedy, makes a welcome return to CBS in his first sitcom starring role in nearly ten years. It's hard to believe that The King of Queens ended its successful nine season run in 2007. Kevin Can Wait looks to be one of the most promising new sitcoms on the fall schedule. It's a traditional multi-camera family sitcom. It's comparable to According to Jim, Mike & Molly and The King of Queens. All of the ingredients to be an instant hit are here. They have a major star, a solid supporting cast, funny writing and a great timeslot. This is just a clean, family friendly comedy that you don't see often enough these days.

Kevin Can Wait will premiere after the tenth season premiere of The Big Bang Theory. They should receive great initial ratings. It will air after The Big Bang Theory for five weeks. This looks like a very wise scheduling move to get viewers to sample the series. It then slides to 8pm on October 24. CBS is obviously banking on the series to be a hit by having it anchor their Monday night comedy block. Fans of The King of Queens and Kevin James should enjoy the show. If you are hungry for laughs, this is a show worthy of checking out. We can't wait to see more of Kevin Can Wait.
