Fri-Yay: The Conners Premieres to Praise and Strong Ratings; COZI TV Celebrates The Nanny's 25th Anniversary with Marathon
by Vincent
The Conners made its big debut last week, and it did so to surprisingly strong reviews and ratings that...well, might seem slightly underwhelming, but still comfortably outperformed just about every other network TV show this season. The series bowed to a strong 2.4 in the demo, and in its second week, fell to a 1.7 (all while facing the World Series). Those ratings are definitely smaller than what Roseanne's reboot were doing, but they are still easily ABC's strongest comedy, and even if it falls a bit more, should have no problem seeing a renewal.
So how is the show? Critics seem to be pretty high on it. While I was never a huge Roseanne fan, I appreciate the original series' commitment to serious storytelling that shined a light on tough issues. The Conners seems to be on this path. Killing Roseanne off seems a bit harsh, but doing it due to an opioid addiction (established in the revival season) actually seems like the least obnoxious way to go about it (certainly a lot better than the ridiculous manner Two and a Half Men killed Charlie Sheen's character off.) It allows the show to utilize the dramatic storytelling that worked so well for Roseanne. Another strength is of course, the cast. The cast really gets an opportunity to shine, and Roseanne Barr being absent allows the show to give more screentime to actors like Sara Gilbert and John Goodman, who do a fantastic job in the series.
Of course, it will be interesting to see if interest can sustain itself over the long haul, or whether hype will fade in much the same way it has for Will & Grace (which is performing only marginally now after a strong start.) We'll see if The Conners can keep up its initial hype and goodwill and maintain its quality, but for now, it's one of the more interesting sitcoms to keep an eye on.
While the beloved lead character Fran Fine was always cagey about her true age, there is no denying that this is the year The Nanny turns twenty-five. COZI TV will celebrate this special anniversary on November 3 with an all-day marathon counting down the twenty-five most beloved episodes. Featuring Fran Drescher herself in the on-air packaging and promotion, the marathon begins at 6:30 AM and runs through 7:00 PM. Visit COZITV.com for episode and schedule information and click here to view a promo. Debuting on November 3, 1993, The Nanny ran six seasons with 146 episodes airing between 1993 and 1999. The show catapulted Fran Drescher into global stardom and later became an enduring fan favorite in syndication.
Episodes featured in the Nanny-versary marathon include landmarks like their engagement and wedding, as well as favorites like "My Fair Nanny," where Fran gets an etiquette lesson from Maxwell and butler Niles so she can hold a proper mother-daughter tea with Maxwell's daughter. Also included in the marathon is "Where's the Pearls," when Fran loses guest star Elizabeth Taylor’s pearls and "The Honeymoon's Overboard" in which Fran and Maxwell as they adapt to living on a deserted island after falling off a yacht on their honeymoon. The Nanny is a classic fish out of water tale that follows Queens native Fran Fine, played by Drescher, who finds herself becoming the nanny to three children of a wealthy English widower, Maxwell Sheffield. Plenty of hilarious and heartwarming moments ensue, as Fran adjusts to life with the Sheffield family – and begins a long roller coaster romance with Mr. Sheffield.
The Nanny airs on COZI TV Monday through Friday from 12 AM to 2 AM, and from 10 AM to 11 AM. It also airs Sunday afternoons at 1 PM. The show won an Emmy Award and was nominated for eleven others.

Netflix Renews Atypical for Season 3; Disney Channel Says Just Roll With It
Netflix has renewed Atypical, the critically acclaimed original series created, written and executive produced by Robia Rashid (How I Met Your Mother, Will & Grace) for a third season. Atypical season 3 will feature 10 half-hour episodes. In season two of the series, which launched in September 2018, Elsa and Doug faced the aftermath of their marriage crisis and Casey tried to adjust to her new school, while Sam prepared for life after graduation. The cast returning for season three has not yet been confirmed. Atypical season two starred Keir Gilchrist (United States of Tara), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Michael Rapaport (Justified), Brigette Lundy-Paine (Margot vs. Lily), Amy Okuda (How to Get Away with Murder), Raul Castillo (Looking, Seven Seconds), Nik Dodani (Alex Strangelove), Graham Rogers (Ray Donovan, The Kominsky Method), Fivel Stewart (Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft), Jenna Boyd (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and Casey Wilson (Happy Endings, Gone Girl).
Atypical is a coming of age story that follows Sam (played by Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal? Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as his mother, Elsa, who is on her own journey of self-discovery. Michael Rapaport plays his father, Doug. Brrigette Lundy-Paine plays Sam's sister, Casey, and Amy Okuda plays a therapist, Julia.
Disney Channel has ordered Just Roll With It, an innovative multi-camera sitcom from co-showrunners Adam Small and Trevor Moore (Disney XD's Walk the Prank). The first-of-its-kind format is a hybrid of a scripted family comedy and an improvisational comedy, in which the studio audience members select the outcome of certain scenes while the cast just rolls with it. Filmed before a studio audience, the unique series is centered around the blended Bennett-Blatt family and features step-siblings Blair and Owen, who could not be more different. Blair, played by Kaylin Hayman (One Day at a Time), often a rebel without a cause, is the polar opposite of her strict, regimented, ex-military mom Rachel, played by Suzi Barrett (Kirby Buckets). Ramon Reed (Broadway musical The Lion King) plays Owen, a born athlete with a taste for scheduling and organization, who is always trying to clean up his creative and charismatic father and morning radio show host Byron, played by Tobie Windham (Walk the Prank). Despite their differences, the Bennett-Blatt clan, and the actors who play them, know how to take whatever life - and the studio audience - throws at them ... and "Just Roll With It."
At the sound of a horn, the actors break from the scene and go backstage while the audience decides which of three outrageous stunts will take place next. Once votes are cast electronically, the actors return to the stage to continue the scene, waiting for the next surprise, which could be anything from being asked to eat a disgusting sardine, grasshopper and ice cream burrito to a man falling through the roof of the Bennett-Blatt home.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Is Alice Next in Line for a Reboot?; CBS Gives Full Season to Three New Series
- Here we go again with another reboot project being floated, and this one is a very surprising one: Alice. (Variety)
- CBS has given full season orders to three of the new series that debuted this fall, including The Neighborhood. (Hollywood Reporter)
- A new sitcom is in development at Fox from the executive producer of The Middle, and it sounds a lot like a reboot of The Middle with a new cast and the father narrating instead of the mother. (Deadline)
- Instead of asking what Matthew Broderick is doing, it might be better to ask what he isn't doing, as he currently slated to star in a Netflix project, recur on The Conners (as a love interest for Jackie), and recur on the FX series Better Things. (Deadline)
- Orange is the New Black was a huge hit when it first debuted on Netflix, but just like creator Jenji Kohan's series Weeds, it isn't quite as big as it used to be, and now the final season is being planned for next year. (Vulture)
- Forget the fall season, NBC is already prepping for mid-season in January. (SitcomsOnline)
WEEKLY PLANNER (OCTOBER 20 - OCTOBER 26)
- More Halloween themed fun is in store on Decades this weekend, as they air a marathon of Thriller.
- If you want to catch the Paramount Network series Heathers, which spent countless years in development only to be cancelled before it even began, you'll get your (maybe one and only) chance to see it in a newly censored version starting Thursday night on Paramount Network, where it will air as a five night event with two episodes per night.
- You can catch the second season of Great News on Netflix starting on Thursday.
- The second season of The Guest Book debuts Tuesday night on TBS.

Fri-Yay: New Sitcoms - What's Working and What's Not?; Brockmire Season 3 Brings Out the Stars
by Vincent
We're about a month into the new TV season, so it's about time we're getting a pretty good idea of what new sitcoms are taking off and what aren't quite yet. Of the crop, there are a few sitcoms that seem to have gotten out of the gate pretty well to a strong start. Those shows are The Neighborhood, The Cool Kids and The Conners. Expectations were not high for The Neighborhood, which received poor reviews and was given the tough task of leading off a night that hasn't done particularly well in the past few years. However, the show has maintained a consistently solid 1.2 in the 18-49 demo and seems to be attracted a consistent, steady amount of viewers. It isn't an out-of-the-gate smash, but it's exceeding expectations, and CBS is likely pleased with its performance. On another page, The Conners had sky high expectations that its premiere last night may not have quite matched - its premiere number was lower than any Roseanne number last year, but it was still the highest-rated broadcast on ABC so far this season by a comfortable margin, and one of the highest rated numbers on network TV in general (only the This Is Us season premiere bested it.) Even if it loses half of its audience, it would be a lock for another season. The Cool Kids has also enjoyed a strong lead-in from Last Man Standing, and is doing quite well for a Friday night series.
There are also some shows not doing so well. NBC's I Feel Bad, despite fairly positive reviews, hasn't managed to attract much of audience, falling to a measly 0.6 in its most recent airing. Similarly, Fox's Rel is not doing a good job of maintaining the solid and steady Animation Domination line-up, falling even further from them than The Last Man on Earth did last year (which was cancelled due to low ratings.) These are the sitcoms that are certainly on watch.
The jury is still out on some other shows, like CBS's Happy Together (it has hovered just around the 0.9 mark in the demo, which is OK but doesn't leave it much wiggle room) and ABC's The Kids Are Alright (which premiered well but also lost a lot of The Conners' audience.) In a few months, we'll check back to see how the race has changed - and who's still in it.
IFC announced details and guest stars for Season 3 of Brockmire, the critically acclaimed comedy series starring Hank Azaria as Jim Brockmire, the garrulous, recently-sober baseball announcer who's climbing his way back to the major leagues. Produced by Funny or Die, Brockmire is currently in production in Atlanta and will return to IFC in spring 2019 with eight all-new episodes. Returning stars include Amanda Peet as Jules, Brockmire's ex-girlfriend, Tyrel Jackson Williams as Charles, Brockmire's entrepreneurial best friend and Becky Ann Baker as Jean Brockmire, his weathered and tough-love older sister. New guest stars appearing in Brockmire Season 3 include (in alphabetical order):
· Former Kansas City Royals baseball player and Baseball Hall of Fame inductee George Brett and Emmy(R)-winning renowned sportscaster Bob Costas will both appear as themselves.
· Richard Kind (Red Oaks, Spin City) as Gus, Brockmire's new producer with questionable leadership skills.
· Tony Award(R) and Golden Globe(R)-winner Linda Lavin (Alice) as Lorraine, Brockmire's estranged mother.
· Tawny Newsome (The Carmichael Show) as Gabby, a NCAA Champion softball player and Brockmire's new partner in the announcing booth.
· Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope) as Shirley, Brockmire's no-nonsense Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor in Florida.
· Academy Award(R)-winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as Matt "The Bat" Hardesty, a former baseball player turned sports announcer with a brash personality and loyal fan base in Florida.
· Christine Woods (Hello Ladies) as Maggie, a self-assured oncology nurse who enters Brockmire's life in an unexpected way.
Brockmire follows Jim Brockmire, a famed major league baseball announcer who suffered a notorious public breakdown after stumbling upon his wife's infidelity - a breakdown so bad that "Brutal Brockmire" became a viral internet meme. Season 1 began a decade later, as Brockmire looked to reclaim his career and reputation by calling games for the Morristown Frackers, an underdog minor league baseball team. Despite finding happiness in Morristown alongside his girlfriend/team owner Jules, Season 2 began with a newly-single Brockmire calling games in New Orleans and living with his co-dependent friend Charles... while fully indulging in the city's booze-riddled sins. When a drug-fueled night of partying with a stranger ends with a near-death experience, Brockmire realizes it's time to get sober once and for all. Season 3 takes place one year after his stint in rehab, with Brockmire doing play-by-play in the radio booth for the major leagues in central Florida while maintaining his brazen and narcissistic tendencies, despite actually being on the wagon. When an opportunity arises for Jim and his new co-host Gabby to take over as lead broadcasters in Oakland, he must fight to change his ever-present amorality.
