Fri-Yay: Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest Are Promising Comedies on Apple TV+; Paramount+ Announces Cast for The Game Revival

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Ted Lasso - Mythic Quest

by Vincent

I've talked before in this column about streaming services' difficulties finding strong comedies to serve as flagships for comedy on their services. Netflix has had many really great comedies, but lately their comedy slate has been dry after giving the ax to shows like BoJack Horseman, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and One Day at a Time. Hulu has had some solid dramedies like Remy and Shrill, but is still finding its footing with straight comedy series. Well, two of the most promising streaming sitcoms are Mythic Quest and Ted Lasso on Apple TV+.

Of the two shows, Mythic Quest (starring and created by Always Sunny's Rob McElhenney) is a more traditional sitcom. It focuses a group of video game developers, and while it has some very serious moments, it's more of a straight comedy. Ted Lasso (starring Jason Sudeikis) is a bit of an odder show buried also extremely compelling. If you haven't watched it yet, two seasons are now available on Apple TV+. I was hesitant about Apple TV+ and felt their early offerings were just okay, but they've really stepped up their game lately. If it holds, maybe they could be the solid comedy steaming service we've all wanted.

The Game - Adriyan Rae, Vaughn Hebron, Analisa Velez, Brittany Daniel and Pooch Hall

Paramount+, the streaming service from ViacomCBS, announced several new cast members joining the service's revival of the groundbreaking series The Game, including Adriyan Rae (Chicago Fire) as Brittany Pitts, the daughter of Jason and Kelly Pitts; Vaughn Hebron (Tyler Perry's The Oval) as Jamison Fields, an undrafted free agent; and Analisa Velez (Sneaky Pete) as Raquel Navarro, Brittany's best friend. Legacy players Brittany Daniel (Cheaper by the Dozen) and Pooch Hall (Ray Donovan) will make special appearances, reprising their roles as Kelly Pitts and Derwin Davis, respectively. The 10-episode first season of the new series will stream exclusively on Paramount+. Relocating from San Diego to Sin City, The Game returns with a mix of new players and original cast, including previously announced series regulars Wendy Raquel Robinson and Hosea Chanchez, to offer a modern-day examination of Black culture through the prism of pro football. The team will tackle racism, sexism, classism and more as they fight for fame, fortune, respect and love – all while trying to maintain their souls as they each play THE GAME.

Sarah Silverman Hosting David Letterman Produced TBS Series; More Stars Joining And Just Like That...

Sarah Silverman

TBS invites you to grab your four-legged BFFs and take a walk down memory lane to revisit one of late-night's most iconic segments on The Late Show with David Letterman, Stupid Pet Tricks, which has been greenlit as a ten-episode, half-hour series for the network. Host Sarah Silverman (I Love You America, The Sarah Silverman Podcast), a fierce lover of funny animals and their equally funny humans, brings this classic segment into a fresh, comedy variety show filled with big laughs, extraordinary animals, and of course the most Stupid Pet Tricks out there. Production will begin in Los Angeles later this year. Inspired by David Letterman's beloved segment Stupid Pet Tricks, the new comedy series will retain all the original charm, silly fun, and appreciation for the often-absurd bond between humans and their animal friends, with comedy legend and host Sarah Silverman infusing it with a quirky vibe.

Each episode features a parade of pets performing the most ridiculous, impressive, and extraordinary tricks on a studio stage before a live audience, interweaving comedic bits along with games and surprise celebrity guest drop-ins, as pet parents join their furry (or scaley!) friends in the quest to be crowned with the coveted title –Stupidest Trick of the Week.

And Just Like That...

Joining the cast of the Max Original series And Just Like That... are Cathy Ang, as "Lily Goldenblatt," Niall Cunningham, as "Brady Hobbes," Alexa Swinton, as "Rose Goldenblatt," and Cree Ciccino, as Brady's girlfriend, "Luisa Torres." This new chapter of the groundbreaking HBO series Sex and the City follows "Carrie" (Sarah Jessica Parker), "Miranda" (Cynthia Nixon) and "Charlotte" (Kristin Davis) as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s. The ten-episode, half-hour series is currently shooting in New York. The previously announced cast includes Sara Ramírez, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, Karen Pittman, Chris Noth, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, Willie Garson and Evan Handler.

Game Show Network Announces New Original Series; Retta Hosting New HGTV Show

Tug of Words - Ahmad Rashad

Game Show Network, the leader in game shows and competitive entertainment, has announced Emmy(R) award-winning television and sports personality Ahmad Rashad as host of a new quick-moving wordplay game show, Tug of Words. The half-hour original series is anticipated to premiere fall 2021. From the producing team behind Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Tug of Words is a fast-paced game where two teams compete to answer word clue questions correctly and pull the flag on the "tug of war rope" to their side. In round one, each answer involves changing a single letter in the word that appears on the board. For example, with 'TUG' on the board, the answer to the clue 'a label inside a garment' is 'TAG,' and with 'TAG' then on the board, the answer to the clue 'hopefully the upstairs neighbors aren't learning this dance' is 'TAP.' With each round, an additional letter is added creating four and five letter words to solve. The team with the flag on their side after three rounds wins the game, qualifying them for the bonus round where they have opportunity to compete for $10,000.

Emmy(R) award-winning television personality Ahmad Rashad is perhaps known just as much for his engaging commentary and interviews with some of the best-known figures in sports as he is for his football career. Over the past two decades, Rashad covered NFL and NBA televised contests both as a studio anchor and as a game reporter for NBC and ABC as well as hosted and executive produced NBA Inside Stuff. In 2010 he began hosting One on One with Ahmad Rashad, an NBA TV series which features Rashad's candid and in-depth interviews with the NBA's biggest stars including LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Shaquille O'Neal.

Retta

Fans flock to HGTV to watch innovative renovations with stunning reveals, but now in the newly greenlit series, Ugliest House in America, the network will tour properties nominated by homeowners who believe their design-challenged home is one of the worst in the country. Ultimately, the "ugliest house in America" will get a $150,000 renovation, culminating in a showstopping final reveal for the lucky homeowners. The series is slated to premiere in early 2022.

2021 Emmy Nominations - Comedy Series

by Vincent

The 2021 Emmy nominations were announced last week, and there are six series up for the Outstanding Comedy Series nominations. Those series are: black-ish, Cobra Kai, Emily in Paris, Hacks, The Flight Attendant, The Kominsky Method, Pen15 and Ted Lasso. If you haven't heard of most of these shows, you may not be alone - almost all of these series are either new or haven't been nominated previously. It's a fresh group of new nominees now that previous Emmy favorites like Modern Family, The Good Place, and Schitt's Creek have ended, and other favorites like Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel did not produce episodes during the eligibility period this year. Not only is it heavy on new series, but it's light on what one might call traditional sitcoms. Really, only black-ish can be called a traditional comedy, while the other shows are more in the "dramedy" category.

Because of this, it's really hard to guess which shows will win the Outstanding Comedy Series award. Traditionally, the Emmys like to award traditional comedies over "dramadies", although that's been changing with shows like Fleabag and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel taking home the top prize in recent years. Furthermore, not a single series nominated has previously won the award (although black-ish has been nominated many times). It sort of feels like a year where the Emmys struggled to pick series to get behind - reflecting what an overall down year it's been for sitcoms. It'll be interesting to see which direction the Emmys go in, because at this point I truly have no idea.

Inspired by IVF stories of actual couples, the powerful film follows two strangers whose paths intersect and become forever intertwined following their IVF procedures. Directed by Elisabeth Rohm, author of Baby Steps: Having the Child I Always Wanted, Switched Before Birth delves into the complicated subject of the federally unregulated fertility industry and fertility challenges that many women around the world are facing as they try to build their families.

While going through her latest round of IVF, Oliva meets and became fast friends with Anna Ramirez (Machado), who is struggling to have a child after years of focusing on her successful restaurants. When Anna becomes pregnant as well, the ladies celebrate and begin to prepare for their babies. Olivia is also there for Anna when she suffers a devastating miscarriage and struggles to move forward while her marriage to restaurateur Gabe Ramirez (Yancey Arias) crumbles. When Olivia and Brian finally welcome their twins Olivia's life feels complete, but the happy couple's world is turned upside down when they discover that not only are the babies not twins, but one of the babies is also biologically Anna and Gabe's that was implanted into Olivia by mistake. Now pitted against each other, Olivia will do anything to keep the baby that she carried, while Anna will stop at nothing to bring her son home.

Melrose Place Reunion on Fox's New Fantasy Island; Tacoma FD Returns Sept. 16 on truTV

Fantasy Island - Melrose Place Reunion

This summer, don't miss a special Melrose Place reunion on Fox's all-new Fantasy Island, when Laura Leighton, Josie Bissett and Daphne Zuniga guest star as friends whose island birthday bashes expose the fault lines in their friendships. This August, Fox travels to Fantasy Island, with an all-new version of the classic show. A modern drama series, Fantasy Island takes place at a luxury resort, where literally any fantasy requested by guests is fulfilled, although they rarely turn out as expected. Delving into the "what if" questions -- both big and small -- that keep us awake at night, each episode will tell emotional, provocative stories about people who arrive with dreams and desires and depart enlightened and transformed through the magical realism of Fantasy Island. Serving as steward of this mysterious island is Elena Roarke (Roselyn Sanchez, Devious Maids, Grand Hotel), a descendant of the iconic Mr. Roarke. Elena set aside her own ambitions, and even the love of her life, to uphold her family's legacy. Sophisticated, insightful and always charming, her calm exterior masks the challenges of the responsibilities she has assumed. Assisting Elena is Ruby Akuda (Kiara Barnes, The Bold and the Beautiful), a young woman with an old soul who arrives on Fantasy Island with a terminal illness and is given a new lease on life there; and pilot Javier (John Gabriel Rodriquez, Miranda's Rights, Rosewood), who also is the head of island transportation and a jack of all trades.

The all-new version of the classic show from Sony Pictures Television, Gemstone Studios and Fox Entertainment will premiere Tuesday, Aug. 10 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. But first don't miss the half-hout special Welcome to the New Fantasy Island, airing Sunday, Aug. 8 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) on Fox. Production is currently underway on location in Puerto Rico.
