Fri-Yay: Rewind TV Offers Sitcom Lovers a Chance to Watch Their 80s/90s Faves; CBS Announces Season Finale Dates
by Vincent
This week, it was announced that a new over the air channel will be debuting this fall called Rewind TV. The show will be tailored towards Gen X viewers, playing targeted nostalgic shows from the '80s and '90s such as Growing Pains, Who's the Boss, Wings, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Murphy Brown. It will, in essence, be the 80s/90s Gen X version of Antenna TV, which targets baby boomers and will now play mostly '50s-'70s favorites.
Recently, there has been an interesting trend where networks such as Antenna TV air older shows to cater to older audiences. It does make sense - these shows have largely been left out of the streaming world, but they still do have devoted audiences who would follow them. As someone who grew up on Nick at Nite and watched many of these shows, I'm happy they will be able to find a home. With older sitcoms being able to air on Antenna TV and post-2000 sitcoms being available on streaming, it felt like the late 20th century sitcoms were being forgotten. But now, they'll finally have a home.
CBS announced the season finale dates and storylines for 2020-2021, featuring intense showdowns, jaw-dropping developments, festive wedding planning and fond farewells. MacGyver has its series finale tonight at 8pm. Upcoming finales include Friday, May 7 at 9pm with the third season finale of Magnum, P.I. On Thursday, May 13, Young Sheldon has its fourth season finale at 8pm. Jumping to 9pm, its the series finale of Mom with guest star Melanie Lynskey. Freshman comedy B Positive follows at 9:30pm. On Friday, May 14, Blue Bloods has its two-hour 11th season finale from 9-11pm. Then on Monday, May 17 the Monday comedies have their finales, with the third season finale of The Neighborhood at 8pm and the second season finale of Bob ♥ Abishola at 8:30pm. Jumping to 10pm, its the fifth season finale of Bull at 10pm. CBS Sunday dramas all have their finales on Sunday, May 23, with the first season finale of The Equalizer at 8pm, followed by the 12th season finale of NCIS: Los Angeles at 9pm and the series finale of NCIS: New Orleans at 10pm. All Rise will have its second season finale at 9pm on Monday, May 24.
CBS Tuesday dramas will all have their finales on Tuesday, May 25, with the 18th season finale of NCIS at 8pm guest starring Pam Dawber, followed by the third season closer of FBI at 9pm and the spin-off FBI: Most Wanted with its second season finale at 10pm. On the very next night, on the last official day of the 2020-21 season, (Wednesday, May 26), Seal Team closes its fourth season at 9pm and fellow fourth season series S.W.A.T. at 10pm. Two freshman series will go a bit into the summer as new comedy United States of Al and new drama Clarice close their runs on Thursday, June 24 at 8:30pm and 10pm, respectively.

Fox Producing New Flintstones Series Titled Bedrock; Sarah Silverman Joins Damon Wayans Jr. TBS Pilot
Fox Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and multi-hyphenate Elizabeth Banks have joined forces to develop Bedrock, a primetime animated adult comedy series continuing the story of everyone's favorite modern Stone Age family, the Flintstones. The pilot script will be written by Lindsay Kerns (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, DC Super Hero Girls, Trolls: The Beat Goes On!), with Banks voicing the character of Pebbles Flintstone, in addition to her role as a producer. Bedrock catches up with the Flintstone family two decades after the original, with Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm's club.
In addition, Fox Entertainment's free streaming platform Tubi has acquired the AVOD rights to all six seasons of the iconic series The Flintstones, including all 166 episodes, which will begin streaming on Tubi on May 1. Produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, The Flintstones was television's first primetime animated series -- airing for six seasons, spanning 166 episodes on ABC - and was also the first animated program nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series. This past fall, the franchise celebrated its 60th anniversary. If picked up to series, Bedrock will be co-produced by Warner Bros. Animation and Fox Entertainment. Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman will executive-produce through Brownstone Productions (Pitch Perfect franchise, Charlie's Angels, Shrill). Brownstone's Dannah Shinder, and Lindsay Kerns will serve as co-executive producers.
TBS announced that it has voice cast Sarah Silverman (I Love You America, The Sarah Silverman Podcast), Nicole Byer (Wipeout, Grand Crew) and Sam Richardson (Veep, Tomorrow War) in its upcoming scripted comedy pilot Kill The Orange-Faced Bear. They join the previously announced live action cast Damon Wayans Jr. (Happy Endings, Let's Be Cops), Jessy Hodges (Indebted, Barry), Alex Karpovsky (Homecoming, Girls), and Nate Torrence (Hello Ladies, Weird Loners). The pilot is scheduled to begin shooting in Portland in May. Kill the Orange-Faced Bear is a comedy pilot about one man's epic revenge journey after a bear eats his girlfriend. Silverman voices Brenda, the sarcastic badass grizzly bear who attacked and ate Hank's fiancĂ©e Stacy—for personal reasons. When Stacy's friends panicked and mistook a can of spray paint for bear mace, they turned Brenda's face orange—but she won’t let being marked make her an easy target for Hank's revenge plan. Byer voices Pauline, a bear with perfect fur and perfect nails who uses her feminine wiles to seduce Brenda's husband. Richardson voices Steve, the charmingly idiotic grizzly bear with a dangerous habit of breaking into cars to steal snacks and beer.
Previously announced live action cast include Damon Wayans Jr. as Hank, the charming, funny and grieving man who’s hell-bent on tracking down Brenda the bear. Jessy Hodges has been cast as Stacy, Hank’s late girlfriend, as well as Jamie, her twin sister with a confusing secret. Alex Karpovsky plays Ronnie, an oddball park ranger who has a score to settle with Hank. Nate Torrance is Murray, Hank's best friend and boyfriend to Jamie, who is just trying to keep everyone together. The series is written, created and executive produced by Romanski (Blue Mountain State). Trevor Engelson and Steven Fisher of Underground (Snowfall), Alex Karpovsky, Jake Szymanski, and Damon Wayans Jr. also serve as executive producers. Jake Szymanski is set to direct.

Nexstar Media Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXST), announced that it will launch Rewind TV, a digital subchannel offering a slate of classic television sitcom hits from the 1980s and 1990s, on September 1, 2021. We first broke this news a few months ago, but now the official announcement has come with the name of the network and programming info. At its launch, Rewind TV will reach 40 percent of U.S. television households, or nearly 50 million homes, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Rewind TV will be available on newly designated or recently vacated digital subchannels licensed to Nexstar, full details on station carriage will be coming in the coming months.
Rewind TV will air a bunch of series from the Antenna TV library, but they have also acquired some new sitcoms: The Drew Carey Show, Suddenly Susan, Caroline in the City, and The John Larroquette Show. We already announced Caroline in the City is coming in 2021 and vaguely hinted about Suddenly Susan in 2022 (but now both are coming to Rewind instead of Antenna). We also hinted a return for Mad About You, but no word on that one yet. The Drew Carey Show and The John Larroquette Show are totally new and will start in 2022 with Suddenly Susan. Joining Caroline in the City this September on Rewind are Antenna TV faves 227, Becker, Dear John, Designing Women, Diff'rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, Family Ties, Growing Pains, Head of the Class, The Hogan Family, Mork & Mindy, Murphy Brown, My Two Dads, NewsRadio, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Who’s the Boss, and Wings all will migrate over to Rewind TV in September. Some of these series are resting a bit right now on Antenna TV, as we mentioned. Nexstar's companion digital network, Antenna TV, will continue to air some of the most popular programming from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, including weeknight reruns of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and sitcoms such as Three's Company, Bewitched and The Jeffersons. Stay tuned for much more information on Rewind TV!

Since its Jan. 15 premiere, the series has reached 8.4 million total viewers, ranked as the #1 series across all television with Girls 6-11, and the #1 live-action series on DisneyNow. Filmed and set in Louisiana, the first season of Secrets of Sulphur Springs followed 12-year-old Griffin Campbell (Preston Oliver), whose world has been upended by his father, Ben (Josh Braaten), after he moves the family from Chicago to take ownership of an abandoned hotel property, The Tremont. Now, the family—which also includes Griffin's mother, Sarah (Kelly Frye), and his younger twin siblings, Wyatt (Landon Gordon) and Zoey (Madeleine McGraw)—live in The Tremont in hopes of restoring it to the lively vacation destination it once was. On his first day at his new school, Griffin hears rumors that the hotel is haunted by the ghost of Savannah (Elle Graham), a girl who disappeared decades ago. He soon meets and befriends Harper (Kyliegh Curran), a thrill-seeking classmate, and they discover a secret portal that allows them to travel back in time and uncover clues about the town mystery.
Season two will take a deeper look into Harper's family history and their connection to The Tremont hotel. What will start as a fact-finding mission will soon turn into a high-stakes adventure that could forever change her friendship with Griffin. The first season of Secrets of Sulphur Springs is currently streaming on Disney+ and available in DisneyNow. Secrets of Sulphur Springs is from creator, writer and executive producer Tracey Thomson (The Young and the Restless). Charles Pratt Jr. (STAR) also serves as showrunner and executive producer. SitcomsOnline Digest: How I Met Your Mother Spinoff Picked Up at Hulu; Complete Series of Baywatch Arriving on DVD
Welcome
to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're hearing about that How I Met Your Mother spinoff, a sitcom that is NOT going forward at ABC, and more. Let's get going!
HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
- How I Met Your Father has been ordered as a series at Hulu. (Variety)
- Half of all homes regularly use streaming media, and 25% of all viewing is now through streaming media, so Nielsen is going to start measuring ratings for this sort of a media a bit more closely. (Deadline)
- Alec Baldwin and Kelsey Grammer may be big names, but that's not enough for ABC to pick up the comedy pilot that both were set to star in (though it's being shopped around elsewhere). (Deadline)
- It took a long time, and it happened after streaming media went
widespread above the level of DVDs, but the entire series of Baywatch is
finally coming to DVD. (VEI)
- More Jeopardy! guest hosts have been announced, including LeVar Burton (CNET)
- Days of Our Lives has stopped production for the end of the current 56th season, but it seems likely that it will be back for a 57th season. (TV Insider)
- In a post-Trump era where the dynamics of political humor have shifted, The Tonight Show is seeing a return to being at the top of the late night talk show wars. (Deadline)
- It seemed as if Fox had something that might work with their limited series The Moodys, but in their attempt to bring it back over a year later, it hasn't quite worked out and has been pulled from the lineup. (SitcomsOnline)
WEEKLY PLANNER (APRIL 24 - APRIL 30)
- We forgot to mention it last week, but Rutherford Falls, a sitcom starring Ed Helms, has debuted on Peacock.
- Decades has a Mission: Impossible binge this weekend.
- Let's Be Real, a comedy show featuring puppets, debuts Thursday on Fox.

Fri-Yay: Netflix's New Jamie Foxx Sitcom Has Potential But Not Quite There Yet; Remembering Felix Silla of The Addams Family and James Hampton of F Troop
by Vincent
Last week, Netflix premiered Jamie Foxx's new sitcom Dad Stop Embarrasing Me, the latest in a line of big stars taking their comedy stylings to Netflix. Netflix is somewhat lacking in new comedy content as of late - although there was the excellent Never Have I Ever last year, overall the streamer hasn't had a good, reliable sitcom in a while. Dad Stop Embarrasing Me has some potential, and it's a comforting enough classic multi-camera sitcom, but it's also somewhat lacking, mostly due to the way it repeats generic sitcom premises without much in the way of originality.
The show revolves around a tragic circumstance. Brian (Foxx's character) has to become a single parent of his teenage daughter Sasha after the unexpected passing of their mother. Like many sitcoms that started with a similarly sad premise, the show doesn't spend too much time on the serious side of the situation and instead plays up the laughs - which is totally fine, but the laughs aren't as plentiful as you'd hope from a sitcom. The best part of the show is the relationship between Brian and Sasha, and if the show gets renewed, its best path to being a reliable comedy would be to hone in on that relationship. The relationship at the center of the show being so strong is promising - the show just needs to work out its kinks and joke issues. As of now, it's not a hugely encouraging reversal of Netflix's comedy drought as of late, but it does at least have some potential.
Italian-born American actor and stuntman Felix Silla, who played Cousin Itt on The Addams Family, has died. He died on April 16 from pancreatic cancer in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mr. Silla was 84.
Silla appeared in the recurring role of Cousin Itt on 17 episodes of the 1964-1966 ABC sitcom The Addams Family. Cousin Itt was Gomez's (John Astin) cousin. The costumed character was composed entirely of floor-length hair accompanied by a bowler hat and sunglasses. He speaks in rapid, unintelligible gibberish that only the family can understand. The voice was provided by studio sound engineer Anthony Magro. Roger Arroyo appeared in two additional episodes as Cousin Itt. The cast included Carolyn Jones, Jackie Coogan, Ted Cassidy, Blossom Rock, Ken Weatherwax, Lisa Loring and Ted Cassidy.
Some of his sitcom guest appearances included Grindl, Petticoat Junction, The Monkees, Bewitched, Mork & Mindy (uncredited) and Married with Children. He played the Polka Dotted Horse and various characters on the 1969 NBC children's series H.R. Pufnstuf, which was created by Sid and Marty Krofft. He appeared as Colonel Poom on the 1971-1973 ABC Sid and Marty Krofft series Lidsville.
Silla was responsible for the physical performance of the robot Twiki on the 1979-1981 NBC science fiction adventure series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Twiki's voice was mainly voiced by Mel Blanc, with Bob Elyea being a temporary replacement in 1981.
Some of his drama guest appearances included Bonanza, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., Night Gallery (uncredited), Battlestar Galactica (uncredited) and The Dukes of Hazzard.
Silla played one of the hang glider Ewoks in the film Return of the Jedi (1983). Some of his other film credits as an actor or stuntman included The Towering Inferno (1974), The Hindenburg (1975), The Black Bird (1975), Spaceballs (1987) and Batman Returns (1992).
Survivors include his wife, Sue, whom he married in 1965, and their children, Bonnie and Michael.
Mr. Silla did a fine job playing the beloved hairy Cousin Itt. He should have been in more episodes. We thank him for the laughs and entertainment he brought us. He will be greatly missed.

Starz Announces Courteney Cox Comedy; Fox Pulls The Moodys
STARZ announced it has given an eight-episode series order for the horror comedy Shining Vale, starring Golden Globe(R) nominee Courteney Cox (Friends, Cougar Town), Academy Award(R) nominee and Emmy Award(R) winner Greg Kinnear, Oscar(R) winner Mira Sorvino (Hollywood, The Expecting), Merrin Dungey (Big Little Lies, The Resident), Gus Birney (Dickinson) and Dylan Gage (PEN15). Dearbhla Walsh (The Handmaid's Tale, "Traitors) directed and executive produced the pilot episode. The chilling half-hour comedy from Jeff Astrof (Trial & Error, Ground Floor) and Sharon Horgan (Divorce, Catastrophe) is the newest title from STARZ, which recently launched the #TakeTheLead initiative deepening the network's existing commitment to narratives by, about and for women and underrepresented audiences.
Shining Vale is a horror comedy about a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Pat, who's convinced she's either depressed or possessed - turns out, the symptoms are exactly the same. Patricia "Pat" Phelps (Cox) is a former "wild child" who rose to fame by writing a raunchy, drug-and-alcohol-soaked women's empowerment novel (a.k.a. lady porn). Fast forward 17 years later, Pat is clean and sober but totally unfulfilled. She still hasn't written her second novel, she can't remember the last time she had sex with her husband (Kinnear), and her teenage kids are at that stage where they want you dead. She was a faithful wife until her one slip-up: she had a torrid affair with the hot, young handyman who came over to fix the sink while Terry was at work. In a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, she and Terry cash in all their savings and move the family move from the "crazy" of the city to a large, old house in the suburbs that has a storied past of its own. Everyone has their demons, but for Pat Phelps, they may be real. Cox plays the lead role of Patricia "Pat" Phelps, with Kinnear playing her ever-optimistic husband, Terry Phelps, whose patience and self-control will be tested like never before. Sorvino plays Rosemary, who is either Pat's alter ego, a split personality, her id, her muse, or a demon trying to possess her. Dungey plays Kam, Pat's oldest friend and book editor. Gus Birney and Dylan Gage also star as Pat and Terry's teenage kids, Gaynor and Jake. Shining Vale will air on STARZ in the U.S. and Canada and on its international streaming platform Starzplay across Europe, Latin America and Japan.
Fox will pull The Moodys from the lineup beginning Thursday, April 29. Name That Tune encores will now air at 8:00pm ET when Hell's Kitchen finishes, with Last Man Standing remaining at 9:00pm ET and comedic puppet series Let's Be Real now airing at 9:30pm ET (instead of the planned 8:30pm ET, following Family Guy encores at 8), replacing The Moodys on the schedule. The latest episode of The Moodys only delivered 1.1 million viewers on Thursday (April 15). Episode 5 airs this coming Thursday (April 22), but the remaining three episodes have been pulled, as of now. Starring and executive-produced by Emmy Award and Golden Globe nominees Denis Leary (Rescue Me) and Elizabeth Perkins (Sharp Objects), The Moodys follows a tight-knit, but slightly dysfunctional, family through their misadventures.
