Fri-Yay: NBC Cancels AP Bio Just As It Was Finding Its Stride; Showtime Orders Work in Progress

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

AP Bio

by Vincent

Upfronts ended a few weeks ago, but there's still some renewal and cancellations that networks have yet to figure out. One of those was AP Bio, until NBC announced they decided to cancel the series this week. It's a decision that doesn't come with much surprise. AP Bio had a mediocre-rated first season, but NBC decided to give the show a second chance, as they've done before with shows that had slow starts like 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation and Community. While those shows wound up running for years, AP Bio's ratings actually dropped drastically in its second season, so NBC pulling the plug is not a surprise. However, it is a shame. AP Bio wasn't necessarily a great sitcom, but it was a very enjoyable one that was perhaps on the way to finding its greatness.

AP Bio started off seeming like a too-mean spin off of Community, a show that wanted to have a cable comedy-esque streak of dark comedy but didn't have the talent to pull it off. However, over the course of the first and especially into the much improved second season, the series began to find its direction by strengthening the personalities of its students out of stereotypes and pinning down into humor sense. The show, like Community, also found some heart, without feeling too preachy, and was becoming a delightfully absurdist network sitcom that actually made you care about the characters...even though the humor could sometimes be dark or even borderline mean, the show did a much better job of tiptoeing that line in its second season. It will be a shame to see it go, and that it will never take off into the great sitcom it had the potential to be.

Work in Progress

Showtime has ordered an eight-episode season of the new half-hour comedy series Work in Progress, created by Abby McEnany and Tim Mason. McEnany stars in the series, expected to premiere later this year. Mason directed the pilot. Lilly Wachowski (The Matrix, Sense8) will co-write the first season and executive produce with McEnany and Mason. Showtime acquired the project after its premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where it was an official selection of the Indie Episodic program. A funny and uniquely human comedy, Work in Progress features McEnany as a 45-year-old self-identified fat, queer dyke from Chicago whose misfortune and despair unexpectedly lead her to a vibrantly transformative relationship. Chicago-based performers Theo Germaine and Karin Anglin co-star alongside Celeste Pechous, with Julia Sweeney (Saturday Night Live, Shrill) appearing in a crucial role as herself.

2019 The Summer of MeTV Schedule; Disney Gets 2nd Season of Sydney to the Max

The Summer of Me

Summertime means yard work. But why toil outside? Stay in and watch two city folk work the soil. As of yesterday (May 27), Green Acres has now moved to a new time, five days a week - weeknights at 9:30PM replacing WKRP in Cincinnati. That is not the only fresh crop arriving in The Summer of Me. Two rarely aired pieces of television history are coming to MeTV this coming weekend -- the 1985 iteration of The Twilight Zone (Saturdays at 12:30am and Sundays 12am, replacing the original Twilight Zone) and the 90-minutes episodes of Wagon Train every weekday at 3:30pm (essentially replacing an airing of The Rifleman). Then, on Saturdays, MeTV presents The Three Stooges at 6PM | 5C (replacing The Wild, Wild West), with two thematically tied shorts presented in full, unedited and without commercial interruption.

More details on Stooges: On Saturday, June 1, legendary comedy troupe and masters of mirth The Three Stooges will join MeTV's lineup of memorable entertainment television. Over 13 weeks, these specially selected and themed broadcasts will present full-length, unedited shorts without commercial interruption, packaged into an hour-long presentation that highlights the many "best of" moments from the beloved comedians. Airing Saturdays at 6PM | 5C, weekly themes include "Crème de la Curly," "Just Say Moe," "Pie...I Oughta!" and "Shemp Cocktail," featuring the classic combo of the Stooge trio -- laidback Larry, hotheaded Moe, man-child Curly, along with dimwitted Shemp.

Sydney to the Max

Disney Channel has picked up a second season of the popular live-action daughter/father comedy Sydney to the Max, starring 13-year-old actress/musical artist Ruth Righi in the title role of Sydney. Geared for kids ages 6-14 and families, the series is set in the present day with flashbacks to the 1990s and follows outgoing middle schooler Sydney Reynolds, who lives with her single dad Max (Ian Reed Kesler, Suits), in the house he grew up in, along with her progressive grandmother Judy (Caroline Rhea, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Disney's Phineas and Ferb). As Sydney's preteen pursuits begin to expand, Max's flashbacks of his childhood help him gain a better perspective of his daughter's experiences. Created and executive produced by Mark Reisman (Frasier, Wings, The Exes), production on season two will commence later this summer.

New episodes from season one will return on Tuesday, June 18 from 8:00-8:30 p.m. EDT on Disney Channel and in the DisneyNOW app. Also starring are Jackson Dollinger as young Max, Ava Kolker as Sydney's best friend Olive, and Christian J. Simon as young Max's best friend Leo.

Fri-Yay: Live in Front of a Studio Audience Recap; Mario Lopez Produced Sitcom Coming to Netflix

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

All in the Family & The Jffersons Live in Front of a Studio Audience

by Vincent

On Wednesday night, ABC aired its first iteration of Live in Front of a Studio Audience, a Jimmy Kimmel-produced special where a few handful of actors recreated classic episodes of All in the Family and The Jeffersons. It was a really interesting idea for a TV network, one that honors the network's past and roots (something that we all know TV networks don't always do). The series featured A-List cast members: Marisa Tomei as Edith, Woody Harrelson as Archie, Ike Barinholtz as Archie's son-in-law and Ellie Kemper as Archie's daughter. The Jeffersons featured Wanda Sykes as Louise, Jamie Foxx as George, among others such as Will Ferrell, Kerry Washington, Anthony Anderson and Amber Stevens West. The episodes weren't necessarily perfect - Jamie Foxx flubbed a few lines (and joked about it quickly after), and any fan of these classic sitcoms would surely tell you they didn't hold a candle up to the original. But for a true sitcom fan, this was really a treat.

The ratings for the special were also pretty huge, earning 10.42 million total viewers (and a 1.8 Adults 18-49 rating) in Live+SD performance - ABC's highest Wednesday total viewers audience on the final night of a May sweep in 12 years. This means it performed even better than ABC's smash hit Modern Family did in its prime in total viewers. Live TV events have proven to be a bonafide way to score some ratings points, as in a DVR and streaming-dominated age, it's important for viewers to feel they need to see something live when measuring live ratings. And as much as networks are figuring out how to profit off of streaming numbers, live ratings are still easily the most important figures when determining a show (and network)'s value. So my guess is that we will see another Live in Front of a Studio Audience (take your guesses on which sitcoms will be next!), and perhaps similar events, on other networks. This is a good thing, and it's a way to keep the sitcom tradition alive in the post-streaming world.

Paula Chavez and Jencarlos Canela

Sticking with traditional sitcom news, Netflix has ordered 16 episodes of The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia, a new multi-cam comedy series co-created by Mario Lopez and Seth Kurland. In the sitcom, when Ashley Garcia — the world's only 15-and-a-half-year-old robotics engineer and rocket scientist — gets the chance to work for NASA, she moves across the country to live with her fun-loving Uncle Victor, a pro football player turned high school coach who’s never met a responsibility he can't shirk. Starring newcomer Paulina Chavez stars as Ashley and singer and actor Jencarlos Canela (Telenovela, Grand Hotel) stars as Victor. The series will be ran by Seth Kurland (Speechless, Melissa & Joey, Friends). The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia joins Netflix's growing slate of live action series featuring kids and families, which includes No Good Nick from David H. Steinberg and Keetgi Kogan, Alexa & Katie from Heather Wordham (two seasons streaming now, with a third on the way), as well as upcoming series Malibu Rescue from Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, Family Reunion from Meg DeLoatch, Team Kaylie from Tracy Bitterolf and Pamela Eells O'Connell, and The Baby-Sitters Club from Walden Media and Michael De Luca.

Los Espookys

The comedy series Los Espookys begins its six-episode season Friday, June 14 from 11:00-11:30 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. Created by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega and Fred Armisen, the primarily Spanish-language (with English subtitles) show follows a group of friends who turn their love for horror into a peculiar business, providing horror to those who need it, in a dreamy Latin American country where the strange and eerie are just part of daily life. Occasionally dropping by is Tico (Fred Armisen), Renaldo's benign, beloved uncle, who is happily living his own career dream as a parking-valet legend in LA.

Fri-Yay: Big Bang Ends With No Hype?; ABC to Air Farrah Fawcett Documentary

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

The Bing Bang Theory

by Vincent

Last night, CBS' megahit The Big Bang Theory finally closed out its 12-season run. That makes it one of the longest-running sitcoms on TV, and by far the biggest sitcom ratings-wise of the past 20 years. And yet...there's an interesting lack of discussion about the show's end. When previous smash hit sitcoms like Friends and Seinfeld came to an end, there was an endless media parade and countless amounts of chatter and speculation - sort of like what we are seeing around the end of HBO's cultural phenomenon Game of Thrones. But with The Big Bang Theory, it feels as if TV's biggest sitcom is simply quietly riding into the night.

This is partially supported by the show's ratings, which have not held up super well in the final season (of course, even a weaker Big Bang Theory is still the highest rated sitcom on TV). Still, regardless of your opinion on the series, it's hard to not appreciate just how huge the series was. It may not hold the universal love of shows like Friends or Seinfeld, but the show got massive amounts of people watching multi-camera comedy in the 2010s, which is not a small feat. It does make me wonder if Big Bang will be the last traditional sitcom smash hit as comedies continue to go gradually more niche and less widely accessible. The Conners does have the potential to fill that hole, but time will tell if it's here for the long haul or just held up by early Roseanne hype. Either way, last night certainly marked the end of an era for sitcom fans.

This Is Farrah Fawcett

ABC News presents a two-hour prime-time special on America's golden girl Farrah Fawcett. From that iconic red bathing suit poster to her role in the hit show Charlie's Angels, Fawcett took the 1970s by storm and captivated the nation with her every move. But in 2006, Fawcett was confronted with her biggest challenge when she was diagnosed with cancer and began an aggressive fight for her life. Now, almost 10 years after her passing, ABC News reports on her life, career, fame and lasting legacy, told through new interviews with those who knew her best, and rare footage from the intimate video diaries of her fight against cancer. This is Farrah Fawcett airs Thursday, May 23 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. EDT on ABC.

The two-hour documentary features new interviews with actress Jaclyn Smith, Fawcett's co-star on Charlie's Angels; Alana Stewart, Fawcett's close friend who helped record her cancer battle for the two-hour documentary Farrah's Story; Bruce McBroom, the Hollywood photographer who shot Fawcett's iconic swimsuit poster; Mela Murphy, Fawcett's confidante and hairstylist; Dr. Lawrence Piro, Fawcett's primary physician; and Dr. Ursula Jacob, Fawcett's physician in Germany who used alternative treatments for her cancer. The documentary also includes Barbara Walters' landmark interviews with Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal, Fawcett's partner at the time of her death.

The show continues to be a ratings success in its second season, now ranking as cable's #1 sitcom and reaching a multiplatform audience of 23 million viewers so far. Doris Day

Actress, singer, and animal welfare activist Doris Day, who starred as Doris Martin in The Doris Day Show, has died. She died on May 13 in Carmel Valley Village, California, after contracting pneumonia. Ms. Day was 97.

The Doris Day Show

Day starred as Doris Martin in the 1968-1973 CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show. The series ran for 5 seasons and 128 episodes. Doris Martin was a widow with two young sons, Billy (Philip Brown) and Toby (Todd Starke, credited as Tod Starke in the series). She moved her family from New York City to her father's rural ranch in Cotina in Mill Valley, California. She worked as a secretary at Today's World magazine in San Francisco. The cast in the first three seasons included Denver Pyle (1968-1970), Fran Ryan (1968), James Hampton (1968-1969), Naomi Stevens (1968-1969), Rose Marie (1969-1971), McLean Stevenson (1969-1971), Paul Smith (1969-1971), Kaye Ballard (1970-1971) and Bernie Kopell (1970-1971). Day performed the series theme song Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be). She received a Golden Globe Award nomination in 1969 for the role.

The Doris Day Show

The format of the series changed drastically in the fourth season. Doris Martin continued to work for Today's World. She was now a carefree, single full-time staff writer. Her children and most of the characters from the previous seasons never appeared or were mentioned again. The cast in seasons four and five included John Dehner (1971-1973) as her new editor Cy Bennett, Jackie Joseph (1971-1973) as Jackie Parker, Doris' friend and Cy's secretary, and Peter Lawford (1971-1973) as Dr. Peter Lawrence, a boyfriend of Doris. Day also served as an executive producer on the series for the 1972-1973 season.

Day appeared in 39 feature films released between 1948 and 1968. She made her feature film debut in Romance on the High Seas in 1948. In 1953, she starred in the hit musical Calamity Jane. Her song Secret Love won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Some of her other film credits included I'll See You in My Dreams, Love Me or Leave Me, The Man Who Knew Too Much (she sang Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song), Pillow Talk (Academy Award-nominated for Best Actress), Please Don't Eat the Daisies, Move Over Darling, The Thrill of It All, Do Not Disturb, Where Were You When the Lights Went Out? and With Six You Get Eggroll.

She began her career as a big band singer in 1939. Her first hit recording was Sentimental Journey with Les Brown & His Band of Renown in 1945. She recorded more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967 during her solo career. Her 29th studio album, My Heart, was released in 2011. She received three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards, in 1998, 1999 and 2012, for her recordings of Sentimental Journey, Secret Love, and Que Sera, Sera, respectively. She received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers in 2010.

Day largely retired from acting after The Doris Day Show ended in 1973. She hosted her own television talk show Doris Day's Best Friends on CBN in 1985-1986.

She was well known for her work as an animal welfare activist for many years. She founded the Doris Day Pet Foundation 1978, which is now the Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF). She formed the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL) in 1987. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work in the entertainment industry and for her work on the behalf of animals.

Ms. Day was a woman of many talents as an actress, singer and animal welfare activist. She was a real sweetheart and a true Hollywood legend. We thank her for the many hours of entertainment she brought us during her career. She will be deeply missed.

Doris Day

DECADES TV Network will honor the life and career of late Hollywood legend Doris Day with a weekend binge of The Doris Day Show. Starting Saturday, May 25 at 1:00PM ET, DECADES will present 68 episodes of the beloved sitcom airing back to back through Monday, May 27 at 7:00AM ET.

Remembered for its ever-changing premise and cast, the cheery series served as the legend's last major on screen performance. Originally formatted as a rural, family-centric sitcom with Day in the role of a widowed mother of two young sons, the series changed abruptly in Season 4 as Day took on the role of a single, career woman in an attempt to keep up with changing audience sensibilities of the early 1970s.

Peggy Lipton

We have news on another tribute marathon. DECADES TV Network will honor the he life and career of the late actress Peggy Lipton with a weekend binge of The Mod Squad. Starting Saturday, May 18 at 1:00PM ET, DECADES will present 42 episodes of the groundbreaking series airing back to back through Monday, May 20 at 7:00AM ET.

In 1968, Lipton, a former teen model, landed the role of street-savvy Julia Barnes on The Mod Squad and was catapulted into stardom, becoming the "It Girl" of the early 1970s with her authentic vibrancy, fresh take on the character, and of course, her signature long blond hair and hippie-chic style. Also starring Michael Cole and Clarence Williams III, The Mod Squad is remembered for being a modern riff on the police drama genre, attempting to reach a new, young audience who was turning off their parents' TV in favor of current movies, music and social movements. The formula of a young, interracial cast of outsiders taking on the establishment worked, and the show was a hit. At the time executive producer Aaron Spelling was quoted, "We're telling it like it is. Somebody has to help adults understand young people. They've got so many hang-ups and nobody seems to care. Love is the answer. Those hippies are right. Those kids are so totally involved with life, they've involved me."

Over five seasons, the series tackled hard-hitting, socially relevant issues in a new and more realistic way for TV, ranging from drugs and domestic violence, to police brutality and even complex aspects of the Vietnam War. Lipton earned four Emmy Award nominations and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in 1971.

In 1974, Lipton married prolific music producer Quincy Jones and soon gave birth to two daughters, Kidada and Rashida Jones. Following their 1989 divorce, Lipton returned to the small screen in the role of Norma Jennings in cult hit Twin Peaks. Lipton's most recent credits include films When in Rome and A Dog's Purpose and appearances on TV series Alias, Crash, House of Lies and the Twin Peaks 2017 revival.

Tim Conway

Emmy-winning actor and comedian Tim Conway, who starred in McHale's Navy and The Carol Burnett Show, has died. He died from complications of normal pressure hydrocephalus on May 14 in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Conway was 85.

McHale's Navy

Conway's first television starring role was as Ensign Charles Beaumont Parker in the 1962-1966 ABC sitcom McHale's Navy. Ensign Charles Parker was the bumbling, naive Executive Officer of the World War II PT-73. The series also starred Ernest Borgnine, Joe Flynn, Carl Ballantine, Gary Vinson, Bob Hastings, Billy Sands, Edson Stroll, Jane Dulo (1962-1964), Gavin MacLeod (1962-1964), John Wright (1964-1966) and Yoshio Yoda. Conway wrote the story for one episode in 1963. He received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role by an Actor for the role in 1963. He also appeared in the 1964 film McHale's Navy and McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force in 1965.

He next starred in the short-lived 1967 ABC western sitcom Rango. Rango was an incompetent Texas Ranger who was assigned to Deep Wells Ranger Station, the quietest post in the state. The series also starred Guy Marks and Norman Alden.

Conway reunited with Joe Flynn in the short-lived 1970 CBS sitcom The Tim Conway Show. He played Spud Barrett, the well-meaning but bumbling chief pilot – in fact, the only pilot – and part-owner of Triple A Airlines, a charter airline based at Crawford Airfield in Los Angeles, California. The series also starred Anne Seymour, Johnnie Collins III, Emily Banks, Fabian Dean and Dennis Robertson.

The Carol Burnett Show

Conway was a frequent guest on the CBS variety/sketch comedy series The Carol Burnett Show for the show's first eight seasons from 1967 to 1975. He became a regular on the series starting with the 1975-1976 season. His memorable characters included The Oldest Man and Mr. Tudball. He won four Emmy Awards for his work on the series: three for his performances in 1973, 1977 and 1978 and one for writing for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy-Variety or Music Series in 1978. The popular series also starred Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman (1967-1977), Lyle Waggoner (1967-1974) and Vicki Lawrence. Conway returned for the short-lived 1979 ABC variety/sketch comedy series Carol Burnett & Company.

He hosted the short-lived 1970 CBS variety/sketch comedy series The Tim Conway Comedy Hour. He guest starred in Turn-On, which aired for a single episode on ABC on February 5, 1969. He made guest appearances in Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In in 1970 and 1971. Conway starred in variety/sketch comedy series The Tim Conway Show, which ran for two seasons on CBS from 1980 to 1981. He starred in the 1990 ABC comedy reality series Tim Conway's Funny America. In 2003, he starred as Mr. Henderson in The WB short-lived sketch comedy series On the Spot.

Conway starred as Ace Crawford in the short-lived 1983 CBS sitcom Ace Crawford, Private Eye. Ace Crawford was a trench-coated private detective who always solves the case and catches the bad guy, despite his constant bumbling. The series also starred Joe Regalbuto, Billy Barty, Shera Danese, Bill Henderson and Dick Christie. Conway created and produced the series.

He had a recurring role as Tom Warner in seven episodes of the CBS sitcom Yes, Dear from 2001 to 2005. Vicki Lawrence played his wife, Natalie Warner. He received Emmy nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Kenny in a 1996 episode of Coach titled The Gardener and for his role as Bucky Bright in the 2008 30 Rock episode titled Subway Hero. Some of his other sitcom guest appearances included Newhart, The Golden Palace, Cybill, Married with Children (as Ephraim Wanker in four episodes), The Larry Sanders Show, Cosby, Suddenly Susan, The Drew Carey Show, Mad About You and Hot in Cleveland.

Conway was also known for his voice work. He was the voice of Barnacle Boy in the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. Some of his other voice credits included The Simpsons, Hercules, Lloyd in Space, The Wild Thornberrys, What's New, Scooby-Doo?, The Proud Family, Scooby-Doo! Pirates Ahoy!, and Dragons: Riders of Berk.

He co-starred with Don Knotts in the films The Apple Dumpling Gang, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, The Prize Fighter and The Private Eyes. Some of his other feature film credits included The World's Greatest Athlete, Gus, The Shaggy D.A., The Billion Dollar Hobo, The Longshot, Dear God and Air Bud: Golden Receiver. He starred as the title character in the Dorf series of comedy films.

Mr. Conway was a comedic genius. He was so funny in McHale's Navy and The Carol Burnett Show. He made everything he appeared in much funnier and better. We thank him for the many laughs and hours of entertainment he brought us during his long career. He will be greatly missed.
