SitcomsOnline Digest: John Goodman Lands Role on HBO Televangelist Comedy; More Alice DVDs from Warner Archive

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're hearing that John Goodman has been cast in a new series for HBO, we're learning of some unsurprising cancellations of series that we already assumed were cancelled, and we're learning of a new release for Alice on DVD. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • While we don't exactly know how The Conners (or whatever it will be called) will work out, John Goodman has landed another series on HBO, The Righteous Gemstones, a comedy about a dysfunctional televangelist dynasty. (Consequence of Sound)
  • For those who remember that NBC had a sitcom called Champions this past season... and they did... it won't be returning for a second season, though it is possible it may be picked up elsewhere. (Variety)
  • During the upfront last month, Fox never said whether Ghosted was renewed or cancelled, but it's probably not a surprise that it was officially cancelled this week. (Deadline)
  • Jerry Seinfeld had some things to say about Roseanne this week, and oddly, he says that he has never seen a comedian destroy their career by just saying one thing, which makes us wonder if he was just being sarcastic or if he is forgetting about his own co-star, Michael Richards. (Deadline)
  • Season five of BoJack Horseman will debut on September 14 on Netflix. (Pitchfork)
  • Jimmy Fallon has been known for trying to stay somewhat politically neutral, but that has changed lately when it comes to Donald Trump, and this week he teamed up with his competition to produce an opening sketch about Trump that aired on both his show and Stephen Colbert's Late Show. (People)

Fri-Yay: Will Roseanne Spin-off The Conners Succeed?; Fox Fall 2018 Premiere Dates

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

    The Conners

    by Vincent

This week, it was announced that ABC was going forward with a spin-off of Roseanne entitled The Conners. The series will take Roseanne's 8pm Tuesday timeslot, and while details on the exact direction of the series are sparse, one thing is for certain: it will not involve Roseanne in any way, and her character will be written or killed off in a turn of events that ABC execs described as "sudden." Whether The Conners will essentially be "Roseanne without Roseanne" or a different type of series entirely isn't clear, but given that the writing team and cast sans Roseanne appears to be identical to what would've been Roseanne Season 11, it's reasonable to expect the new series will pick up where Roseanne left off. The spin-off has been picked up for 10 episodes and could receive an extension if it performs adequately.

It will be interesting to see how the public responds to The Conners, and whether it will continue to see ratings as impressive as Roseanne's 10th season did this past spring. I'm going to guess there will once again be a lot of upfront public interest in the series, but as deplorable as Barr's recent comments might be, it's really hard for me to imagine the world of the Conners without Roseanne Conner. That said, the cast is incredibly talented and the characters are all solid and interesting, and while Roseanne's 10th season had a lot of flaws, it did a lot of interesting things with the Conners and examining how they would fit into 2010s America. I could see The Conners eventually developing into an astute working class sitcom without the baggage that Roseanne Barr brings to it. But part of me does wonder if maybe it's best if we all just left Roseanne in our rear view mirror. The Roseanne debacle has proved that sometimes, shows are better off left in the past, and that the present can taint our memories of shows that we once loved. It's possible The Conners will revive some of the bad taste left by the unfortunate ending to the Roseanne revival, but it's also possible it will be salt on the wound, and pulling a great show out of all of the uncertainty and turmoil of the post-Season 10 Roseanne going-ons is going to be an uphill battle. I'd love for The Conners to prove me wrong, but I'm fearing that it's going to be another example of a TV network messing up something that should've been left alone to begin with.

    Piper Perabo

Netflix has announced that Piper Perabo (Covert Affairs, Looper) and JJ Feild (Turn, The Romanoffs), as well as newcomer Frankie Hervey, have been cast in the upcoming original comedy series Turn Up Charlie, which went into production earlier this month in London. They join the previously announced Idris Elba, who co-created and executive-produces the series in which he will also star.

Turn Up Charlie centers on Charlie (Elba), a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend's problem-child daughter.

Gary Reich and Tristram Shapeero will also serve as executive producers. The series will be co-produced by Brown Eyed Boy Productions and Green Door Pictures for Netflix. Eight 30-minute episodes have been ordered. Stay with us for updates on a launch date.

    GLOW

It's time to get your GLOW on again. The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are back in town. GLOW Season 2 launches globally on Netflix June 29.

Season 2 follows the women of GLOW as they become local celebrities, confronting the good, the bad, and the ugly realities of their newfound fame. As Ruth and Debbie settle into the day-to-day of making a season of TV together, they confront lingering issues at the heart of their friendship. Sam is still Sam, but now he has a teenage daughter living with him and twenty episodes to churn out. The wrestling is harder, the stakes are higher, and the hair is even bigger.

Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women's wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.

Lifetime Orders TV Movies, Including One with Alyssa Milano; Dear White People Gets 3rd Season

    Alyssa Milano

Lifetime has greenlit three feature movies based on novels by international best-selling author Jane Green for 2019. From executive producers Kim Raver (Grey's Anatomy), Manu Boyer (To Whom It May Concern) and Jane Green, the first film in the series, Tempting Fate, will star Alyssa Milano (Charmed, Mistresses) and has begun production in Vancouver. Tempting Fate will also mark Raver's directorial debut with Boyer from a script written by Jennifer Maisel (Lost Boy).

Based on the New York Times best-selling novel of the same name, Tempting Fate follows the story of mother-of two Gabby (Milano) whose picture perfect marriage to Elliott (Steve Kazee, Shameless) is jeopardized when she meets Matt (Zane Holtz, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), a handsome younger man who seemingly ignites a fire and desire within her. What begins as a business opportunity soon develops into an emotional affair leading Gabby to eventually succumb to Matt's unrelenting attraction and attention, never foreseeing the life-changing consequences that lie ahead. Milano recently appeared in the comedy series, Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later and next up, she stars in the Netflix comedy-drama TV series Insatiable. Milano has spent more than 30 years in the public eye on such enduring series as Who's the Boss?, Melrose Place, Mistresses and Charmed. This is her third Lifetime movie (following 2008's Wisegal and 2010's Sundays at Tiffany's).

As for the other two films: To Have and to Hold centers on Alice who still can't believe her high school crush, the dashing, wealthy and successful Joe Chambers, would choose to marry her and willingly allows him to mold her into his ideal socialite wife. Despite Alice's best efforts to be the woman of Joe's dreams, he can't help but be unfaithful to her. When Joe's indiscretions impact his career, Alice's life is further turned upside down. Alice unexpectedly finds herself falling for her best friend's boyfriend and begins to wonder if her fairy tale ending could exist after all. In Family Pictures, Sylvie and Maggie are two strangers living on opposite coasts, leading very similar lives with husbands that travel for work too much and daughters about to leave the nest. But when their daughters befriend each other on college tour, they soon discover a shocking secret that threatens to tear both families apart.

This message is being delivered to you by The Order of X, here with an update on Vol. 3 of Netflix's acclaimed comedy series, Dear White People.

Set against the backdrop of a predominantly white Ivy League university where racial tensions bubble just below the surface, Dear White People is a send-up of the now post "post-racial" America that weaves together a universal story of finding one's own identity and forging a wholly unique path. The satirical series -- based on the acclaimed 2014 film by the same name - continues to follow a group of Winchester University students of color as they navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness (or lack thereof) and activism in the millennial age. Through an absurdist lens, Dear White People utilizes biting irony, self-deprecation and sometimes brutal honesty to hold up a mirror to the issues plaguing society today, all the while leading with laughter.

Dear White People stars Logan Browning (Sam), Brandon P. Bell (Troy), Antoinette Robertson, DeRon Horton, John Patrick Amedori, Ashley Blaine Featherson and Marque Richardson.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Roseanne Without Roseanne is Official; Is a Revival of The Nanny in the Works?

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! No week would be complete without talking about Roseanne, although it may be The Conners we talk about more from now on! Additionally, we are hearing of a potential new revival of The Nanny, something happening in the reboot of Dynasty that will totally change how that show relates to the original, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
    • We’ve known that ABC has been kicking the tires on it for almost a month now, and now it is official: there will be a spinoff of the reboot of Roseanne, featuring all of the cast except for Roseanne Barr herself. (NPR)
    • Now this is a reboot that might work and would certainly not end with the star doing something controversial: Fran Drescher says a revival of The Nanny could be happening. (The Wrap)
    • For years, the mostly left-wing entertainment division of Fox and the mostly right-wing news division of Fox have been able to co-exist, but it seems that tensions have reached a boiling point this week and creative talents in the entertainment division (including Modern Family co-creator Steve Levitan and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane) are speaking out, with Levitan going so far as to announce that he will leave the studio following the conclusion of Modern Family. (Hollywood Reporter)
    • It looks as if the CW reboot of Dynasty is going to have to go in a different direction than the original Dynasty went, as the actress who plays Cristal in the reboot will not be returning for the second season. (Deadline)
    • It just barely made it to a second season, but a third won’t be happening, as NBC has decided time is up for Timeless. (CNN)
    • 3rd Rock from the Sun will debut July 16 on Laff. (SitcomsOnline)

      HOME MEDIA RELEASES (JUNE 26)

      WEEKLY PLANNER (JUNE 23 - JUNE 29)
      • A new version of Double Dare, a Nickelodeon favorite from the past, will be coming to Nickelodeon on Monday, and although he won't have the same role he originally had, original host Marc Summers will be involved.
      • You know that the middle of summer has arrived when CBS starts resorting to a reality show about people living in a house together, and that show (Big Brother) returns for an astonishing 20th season on Wednesday.
      • A new season of GLOW will arrive on Netflix on Friday.
      • The binge on Decades this weekend is taking a slightly different approach, and you can catch every episode of Bridget Loves Bernie (twice even) as well as Square Pegs this weekend.

Fri-Yay: Shows to Catch Up on This Summer; The Conners Coming to ABC Tuesdays This Fall

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

      One Day at a Time

      by Vincent

Summer has always been known as a slow time for the TV world, and although the advent of streaming has offset that somewhat, it still remains true in the broadcast and cable television world. When discussing TV sitcoms, there isn't a whole lot to look forward to if you've already finished the recent seasons of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Arrested Development. Granted, there are a few promising comedies debuting their new seasons this summer, which I'll get to in the coming weeks. But here's a list of shows that have been quietly killing it all year and are able to easily be streamed so you can catch up before they debut their new seasons in the fall or the winter.

One Day at a Time (Netflix original) - If you liked the way the Roseanne reboot focused on blue collar problems and economic struggles, then you need to check out the revamped One Day at a Time, which tackles many of the same issues flawlessly and without the baggage of Roseanne Barr's real-life persona. One Day at a Time re-imagines the 1970s sitcom for a 2010s audience, with a Cuban-American family at the helm. The performances of everyone in the cast, from veteran actors Rita Moreno and Justina Malachado to newcomer Isabella Gomez, kills it, and the show's portrayal of real struggles Americans face from financial struggles, mental illness and sexuality are portrayed incredibly.

Bob's Burgers (Fox, entire series available to stream on Hulu) - Bob's Burgers may be TV's most consistent series. Going into its ninth season, the tale of the Belchers has never missed a beat in being heartwarming, funny, and incredibly entertaining - it remains just as strong now as it was in its peak. Rumor has it that a movie is in the works for the series, so now is a good time to catch up with all of the show's delightful antics. But you don't even need that as an excuse - I guarantee this show's spunky sense of humor and big heart will brighten your day, and it's perfect for a summer afternoon binge session.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix original) - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt hasn't always been the most consistent series, but its heights have been fantastic, and the show's recent fourth season (or first half of it, anyway) may be the show's finest yet. Kimmy Schmidt deals with some dark subject matter but never feels overbearing, and manages to treat its characters rather serious trials and tribulations with the respect they deserve.

The Good Place (NBC, Season 1 available on Netflix, Season 2 coming soon) - The Good Place is my personal pick for best show on TV right now. It's funny, thoughtful and suspenseful - it satisfies every TV itch, from incredibly stories to amazing jokes to top-notch acting and writing. The show is entering its third season on NBC, and its pitch-perfect and surprising first season is available to binge on Netflix. The wildly inventive and original second season should also be available soon, so you'll have the opportunity to join the conversation when the series returns this fall.

Detroiters (available to stream via Comedy Central's website) - I'll write more in depth about the series next week, but Comedy Central's Detroiters is one of the most underrated shows on TV right now. Its outlandish sense of humor is weird, wild and funny and kind of unlike anything I've seen on TV before. The second season premiered this week, but you owe it to yourself to catch up with the first season, which had some of the most left-field jokes I've ever seen on a TV show before.

      Sara Gilbert and John Goodman

The Conners (working title), a spinoff of the groundbreaking family comedy Roseanne, has been greenlit to series with an order of 10 episodes for fall 2018. After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family - Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. - grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns - with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails. The series, featuring John Goodman ("Dan"), Laurie Metcalf ("Jackie"), Sara Gilbert ("Darlene"), Lecy Goranson ("Becky") and Michael Fishman ("D.J.") as their beloved Conner characters, is set to air Tuesdays from 8:00-8:30 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Additional cast members and a premiere date will be announced later. Roseanne Barr will have no financial or creative involvement in the new series.

Tom Werner will executive produce, along with Sara Gilbert, Bruce Helford, Dave Caplan, Bruce Rasmussen and Tony Hernandez. Bruce Helford, Dave Caplan and Bruce Rasmussen are also writers. The series is from Tom Werner and Werner Entertainment. When ABC announced that they were canceling Roseanne thanks to Roseanne Barr's cruel comments, we suggested that they kill her off and retitle the series...and it looks like that is what is happening! The Hogan Family all over again?

SitcomsOnline Digest: Roseanne Spinoff One Step Closer to Reality; Netflix to Air New Season of Lucifer

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! Roseanne is stealing the spotlight again this week, as it looks like a spinoff of the series may actually be close to becoming a reality. We're also hearing some rumblings about daytime television, including a temporary (and potentially permanent) production halt to a long-time staple of daytime trash talk shows. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
      • A Roseanne spinoff is getting one step closer to reality now, as a deal appears to be in the works in which Roseanne Barr will sign an agreement to let the show go on without receiving on-going residuals. (Hollywood Reporter)
      • It seems that Roseanne Barr's name was submitted for an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series just before the controversy broke out. (Deadline)
      • If you don't want a spoiler, don't click on this story, but this is how Danny Masterson was written out of the Netflix series The Ranch. (Deadline)
      • Are we finally reaching the end of the trash TV talk show era? Perhaps, as it was announced this week that The Jerry Springer Show will halt production for at least next season (potentially for good) after a nearly three decade run, and only air in reruns on The CW. (Hollywood Reporter)
      • Streaming services have often come to rescue canceled network series, and this week, Netflix rescued Fox's Lucifer. (Deadline)
      • Although the show itself will continue to air for a few more months, The Chew said farewell to fans on Friday with the last taped episode of the series. (People)
      • There was speculation that WGN America was trying to get out of the scripted television business in the lead up to a potential merger of parent company Tribune with Sinclair (which has yet to happen), but this week, two new original series were announced for the cable network. Fri-Yay: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Finally Finds Its Best Self; All About the Washingtons with Rev Run Coming to Netflix

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Ellie Kemper - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

        by Vincent

Despite being one of the funniest shows on television, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has spent a lot of its four-season run defending itself. Although its joke writing and characters are top-notch comedy gems much like on Fey and Carlock's previous show 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt has never quite reached the level of widespread acclaim that 30 Rock did due to the show's questionable handling of sensitive topics and especially its tendency to appear tone-deaf when dealing with hot button issues. The show's portrayal of Jacqueline (portrayed by the very white Jane Krakowski) as a Native American was the first aspect of the show to really make headlines, but it was followed in the second season by an episode that seemed to brush off the legitimate criticism of the plotline, followed by several episodes in the third season that had some fairly trite takes on political correctness and "call out culture." The things that Kimmy Schmidt is good at - creating a unique world of characters, amazing jokes, and messages of female empowerment - were often overshadowed by the uproar over the show's tendency to drop the ball when covering these touchy topics. Additionally, like many streaming sitcoms, Kimmy Schmidt sometimes has the tendency to go long (many episodes run 30 minutes or more) without the restraints of the traditional sitcom model, which can result in episodes that feel overstuffed.

However, in the first half of its fourth season (which dropped last week - the second half will premiere in January), Kimmy Schmidt has seemingly eliminated almost everything that didn't work in the first three seasons and applied a laser focus to the show's strengths. The jokes comes faster and harder than ever, and are funnier than ever (every episode left me with at least a few big belly laughs), and the show's social commentary sticks to the show's strengths, tearing down targets like "Mens Rights Activities" and the militarization of young men via the internet, which is firmly in the show's wheelhouse of female empowerment and tackling the concept of the patriarchy. Perhaps this is because we've only seen six episodes of the season, but these six episodes do an excellent job of capturing everything that works about Kimmy Schmidt and leaving out much of what doesn't. There is an increased focus on the stories of Kimmy and Titus, treating funny supporting characters as the funny supporting characters they are rather than attempting to juggle too much by giving everyone A plots. That keeps the episodes tight and focused rather than stuffed and overlong, and allows characters like Lillian and Jacqueline to function as amazing joke machines rather than saddling them with storylines that never quite click. After the uneven third season, I was somewhat relieved to hear that Kimmy Schmidt would be ending after its fourth season. Now, I'm sad we only have six episodes left, and I hope that the rumored series-ending movie winds up panning out, as I'm not ready to say goodbye to this show as it's functioning at the top of its game.

        All About the Washingtons

Netflix announced that it's newest scripted multi-camera comedy series starring Rev Run and his wife Justine Simmons, All About the Washingtons will debut August 10, 2018 at 12:01 AM PT with 10 episodes. The series was originally developed for ABC in 2017 but ABC passed on the project. All About the Washingtons is an autobiographical scripted family sitcom that follows Joey Washington (Rev Run aka Joseph Simmons) and his wife Justine Washington (Justine Simmons), playing fictionalized versions of themselves raising a family of family kids. After Joey decides to retire from a long career as legendary hip-hop royalty, his wife Justine, takes advantage of the opportunity to pursue a career of her own now that Joey is available to focus on raising the kids and keeping the house in order. Their kids are portrayed by rising stars Kiana Ledé, Nathan Anderson, Leah Rose Randall and Maceo Smedley.
