HBO Max Picks Up Season 2 of Made for Love; Discovery Is Growing with Jim Belushi
HBO Max has renewed the Max Original series Made for Love for a second season. The critically acclaimed, darkly absurd comedy ranks among HBO Max's top original half-hours since launch. Based on the novel by Alissa Nutting, Made for Love is a cynically poignant story of love and divorce following Hazel Green (Cristin Milioti), a thirty-something woman on the run after ten years in a suffocating marriage to Byron Gogol (Billy Magnussen), a controlling tech billionaire. Soon she discovers that her husband has implanted a monitoring device – the Made for Love chip – in her brain, allowing him to track her, watch her, and know her "emotional data" as she tries to regain her independence. Through the chip, Byron's able to watch Hazel's every move as she flees to her desert hometown to take refuge with her aging widower father Herbert (Ray Romano) and his synthetic partner, Diane. Made for Love is a production of Paramount Television Studios. In addition to Milioti, Magnussen and Romano, season one of Made for Love starred Dan Bakkedahl, Noma Dumezweni, Augusto Aguilera and Caleb Foote.
Audiences around the world have watched as Jim Belushi (According to Jim, SNL, Real Men) sang, danced and entertained across our screens over the years, but few could have imagined his next move. Viewers were delighted to follow along as Jim combined his many talents with an immense passion and built a cannabis business from the ground up in southern Oregon. Now, viewers will continue on this journey as Discovery today announced the return of the hit series, Growing Belushi, set to air across Discovery platforms later this year. What started as almost a hobby has grown into a successful business, and now, Belushi's Farm is experiencing an increasing national demand for its cannabis products. Viewers will get a front-row seat as Jim and his team work to scale the business up to meet that increased demand. They are bringing state-of-the-art technology, cultivation methods, equipment and facilities to Belushi's Farm. The results are as promising as they are challenging.
Season one of Growing Belushi took Jim on a journey from legalization rallies in South America, Pablo Escobar's impact on Colombia and Jim's own family, and the genesis behind bringing the Blues Brothers' cannabis brand to dispensary shelves. In this season, Jim becomes an expert on cannabis farming, groundbreaking discoveries in medicinal cannabis, and learns first-hand what happens when a small farm passion-project grows into a cutting-edge business with a hot national brand. With the help from some familiar faces, including Dan Aykroyd, Judy Belushi, cousin Chris, and of course, the legendary Captain Jack (whose cannabis was known as "The Smell of SNL"), viewers will experience the familiar and familial back-and-forth between cousin Chris and Jim as they use Chris' restaurant-business savvy to establish infrastructure, compliance and business know-how at the farm. And of course, there are many new adventures, such as Chris operating a tiny, test kitchen restaurant at the farm, the Engjell Café, which introduces a whole new element of comedy as Chris experiments with cannabis-infused cuisine. Jim likes to say with a smile, "With one table and free food, the Engjell Cafe is the most exclusive restaurant in southern Oregon. The only problem is the owner is a pain in the..." Equally funny as it is informative and in true 'edutainment' style, Growing Belushi, which is filmed in southern Oregon, will shed light on the groundbreaking medical discoveries in the medicinal cannabis industry, as well as the personal journey of Jim and his mighty farm.

Fri-Yay: Paramount+'s iCarly Revival Is Light-Hearted Fun for Millennial and Gen Z Viewers; HIMYM Director Joins HIMYF
by Vincent
Last week, Paramount+ debuted the first three episodes of the iCarly revival. The iCarly revival, which I've discussed previously, follows the cast of iCarly in present-day as twenty-something adults. The show "grew up" with the cast rather than continuing to be a show aimed at children and teens. Although it's still a family-friendly sitcom, it does have some (mild) swear words and alludes to things like drinking and sex, which obviously would be a no-no if the show continued to be on Nickelodeon. As a result, the 2021 version of iCarly is a pretty fun watch. It's not going to make any "best sitcom of all time" lists, but it's an enjoyable combination of a nostalgia trip and an actually fun 2020s sitcom, particularly if you're a younger millennial or older Gen Z viewer who grew up with the show.
iCarly's reboot is a little more interested in commenting on internet culture and the effects it can have than its predecessor, which makes sense given how the internet has changed drastically since the show's original run from 2007 through 2012. The internet has become a more central part of our lives since then, and has contributed to the rise and fall of many, many people in the time since the show ended. The show covers topics such as getting "canceled" and the difficulty of staying relevant as well as becoming a "meme." It also is very interested in commenting on internet trends and memes. At times, it can feel a little too much like pandering to its younger millenial/Gen Z audience. (The most notable example of this is when the show references the popular Miranda Cosgrove 'interesting' meme that anyone in iCarly's core demographic would be familiar with, even if technically that meme came from Drake & Josh and not iCarly.) But at other times, it actually makes some decent points about how the internet can make us feel a little empty. I don't want to oversell the show, because I don't actually think it's attempting to make many deeper points about the perils of fame or anything like, say, a Bo Burnham special would, but it does hit at those points occasionally. Still, for the most part, this is just a fun, breezy watch for anyone who grew up with iCarly, with enough actually funny and solid jokes to make it more than simply a nostalgia trip. It's the perfect easy summer afternoon watch, and while you might not get much out of it if you aren't in the target demo (I'd say anyone born between roughly 1992 and 2000), you'll definitely have fun with it if you are.
A familiar face is joining How I Met Your Father, but you won't see her on screen. Pam Fryman is a multi-camera force well-known for notably directing all but twelve episodes of the 9-season smash hit, How I Met Your Mother and now he returns to direct How I Met Your Father. Pam got her start in the business as a high school intern on The Mike Douglas Show. When given the chance to work on a show in Los Angeles, she jumped at the opportunity and worked her way into game shows, soap operas, and eventually primetime sitcoms. She won numerous Daytime Emmy(R) Awards and has been nominated for multiple DGA awards. Her resume includes seminal comedies of the past two decades including Frasier, Friends, King of Queens, Just Shoot Me, and Two and a Half Men. She most recently directed episodes of Carol's Second Act, One Day at a Time & Call Your Mother. In all, Pam Fryman has directed well over 500 episodes of television over the span of her amazing career.
The 10-episode comedy recently receiving a straight-to-series order from Hulu, produced by 20th Television. In the near future, Sophie (Hilary Duff) is telling her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options. How I Met Your Father is written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Executive producers include Aptaker, Berger, Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Pam Fryman. Adam Londy will serve as co-executive producer, and Duff will serve as a producer. How I Met Your Father is a production of 20th Television. And finally, it was recently announced that Chris Lowell was cast as Jesse (character description: smart, a bit of an edge and cynical about love. He's an aspiring musician who works as an Uber driver to make ends meet and lives with his best friend Tom.)

From Mike White (HBO's Enlightened), HBO's six-episode limited series The White Lotus, a comedic social satire set at an exclusive Hawaiian resort, debuts Sunday, July 11 from 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The series will air on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max. Starring Murray Bartlett (HBO's Looking), Connie Britton (Nashville), Jennifer Coolidge (2 Broke Girls), Alexandra Daddario (HBO's True Detective), Fred Hechinger (Eighth Grade), Jake Lacy (HBO's Girls), Brittany O'Grady (Little Voice), Natasha Rothwell (HBO's Insecure), Sydney Sweeney (HBO's Euphoria) and Steve Zahn (HBO's Treme), the series follows the vacations of various hotel guests over the span of a week as they relax and rejuvenate in paradise. But with each passing day, a darker complexity emerges in these picture-perfect travelers, the hotel's cheerful employees and the idyllic locale itself. Recurring guest stars include: Molly Shannon (HBO's Divorce), Jon Gries (Dream Corp LLC), Jolene Purdy (WandaVision), Kekoa Kekumano (Aquaman), and Lukas Gage (HBO's Euphoria).
Among the employees at The White Lotus are the fastidious resort manager Armond (Murray Bartlett), who, after a sudden trauma, begins a dramatic downward spiral - and the down-to-earth spa manager, Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) who gets taken on an emotional roller coaster ride by a needy guest. The vacationers include the Mossbacher family - Nicole (Connie Britton), a successful type-A exec, who can't help but treat her family like disobedient employees; her husband, Mark (Steve Zahn), dealing with both an embarrassing health crisis and a terminal inferiority complex; their teenaged son, Quinn (Fred Hechinger), a socially awkward gamer, experiencing the wonder of nature for the very first time; their daughter, Olivia (Sydney Sweeney), and her friend, Paula (Brittany O'Grady), sharp-tongued college sophomores who cast a sardonic eye on the lifestyles and belief systems of everyone around them. The handsome, entitled Shane Patton (Jake Lacy) is here with his beautiful bride, Rachel (Alexandra Daddario). Shane and Rachel are in the throes of young love, but as they get to know each other better in this new, intimate environment, clouds of doubt appear - and by the time Shane's intrusive mother, Kitty (Molly Shannon) surprises them with an unwelcome visit, their fairytale honeymoon has begun to unravel. And finally, there is Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge), a wealthy, unstable woman, recovering from the death of her mother, traveling alone to the hotel, looking for love and in desperate need of a massage.

Hulu's Solar Opposites Renewed for 4th Season; Sundance Now's Motherland Returns July 8
Hulu has renewed adult animated comedy series Solar Opposites for a 4th season (12 episodes), from 20th Television Animation. The series debuted in 2020 and became the streaming platform's most - watched Hulu Original comedy premiere of the year and was Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes. Season 3 is slated to premiere in 2022. Solar Opposites is a marquee series within Hulu's growing slate of Original adult animation content along with Crossing Swords, Marvel's M.O.D.O.K, and upcoming series Marvel's Hit Monkey and Koala Man. Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan are co-creators and executive producers alongside Josh Bycel. The series is co-showrun by McMahan and Bycel. Justin Roiland, Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone and Mary Mack will reprise their roles. Their mission: protect the Pupa, a living super computer that will one day evolve into its true form, consume them and terraform the Earth.
Premiering exclusively in North America and available as a full season binge on Sundance Now and AMC+ on Thursday, July 8, Britain's favorite gang of moms (and dad) is back for a third season of Motherland, navigating the pitfalls of middle-class parenting and the complicated politics of the school gates. In the new season, Julia's (Anna Maxwell Martin, Line of Duty) elderly mother Marion (Ellie Haddington, Enola Holmes) has moved in thanks to failing health, so Julia is faced with the prospect of granny proofing her house. The only silver lining to this horror arrives in the form of Julia's new builder who turns out to be quite the DILF. Meanwhile, Amanda (Lucy Punch, Bloods) navigates the humiliation of divorce from Johnny (Terry Mynott, The Windsors), single mum Liz (Diane Morgan, Intelligence) launches herself back into the world of work, and Kevin (Paul Ready, Flack) tries everything to rekindle the spark with wife Jill. Highflyer Meg (Tanya Moodie, A Discovery of Witches) faces big health issues and Anne (Philippa Dunne, The Nevers) has to cope with a growing family. All this while the moms grapple with Mother's Day, the looming choice of secondary schools, a nit pandemic, and the school trip from hell. This season also includes a memorable guest appearance by beloved BAFTA-Award winning actress Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous, The Wolf of Wall Street) as Amanda's poisonous mother.
Motherland season three, A Sundance Now Exclusive Series, is a Boom Cymru TV Ltd and Merman MMXVII production. Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe), Holly Walsh (The Other One), Helen Serafinowicz (Fit) and Barunka O' Shaughnessy (Breeders) serve as writers and Simon Hynd (There She Goes) serves as director. WEEKLY PLANNER (JUNE 19 - JUNE 25)

Fri-Yay: Master of None Pivots Genres in Season 3; Highway to Heaven Event Movies Coming to Lifetime; Remembering Frank Bonner of WKRP in Cincinnati
by Vincent
After a several year wait, the third season of Master of None arrived on Netflix a few weeks ago. Master of None's third season looked very different than its first two, though, as the series now centers around Lena Waithe's character Denise, and her relationship with her wife. Additionally, the show took a far more serious and somber tone in Season 3, marking one of the more intense genre shifts of a show in recent times.
To be fair, Master of None was never really a straight sitcom at all, or even a strictly comedy series. It was always an artful mix of comeic moments, drama and self-realization. But it was far more comedic in Seasons 1 and 2, offering many moments of pure and genuine comedy. Season 3 features very few examples of this (to the point where I'd say straight up dramas like Breaking Bad, Mad Men or The Sopranos may very well have more comedic moments), and although I did enjoy the relationship aspects, I found myself feeling like the show could've stood to be a little lighter. Lena Waithe and Naomi Ackie are great, and sold their relationship well. But the endless drama did make the season a bit of a slog at times, with some admittedly great moments. Overall, Master of None Season 3 is a decent way to spend an afternoon or evening, but if you're expecting the sharp comedy mixed with dramatic moments of Seasons 1 and 2, you may be disappointed.
Lifetime is offering an inspiring new take on a beloved classic with the greenlight of the event movie series Highway to Heaven starring Grammy® winner Jill Scott (First Wives Club), who also Executive Produces, as the new angel Angela who comes down to Earth to help people in crisis. It also stars Barry Watson (7th Heaven/The Loudest Voice) as Junior High School principal Bruce to whom Angela reveals her true identity. In cooperation with Cindy Landon and the Michael Landon Estate, the wheel of movies are inspired by the highly-rated 80s drama that ran over 100 episodes between 1984 – 1989. With a constant theme throughout of love and kindness, the reboot aims to inspire hope and community as it addresses contemporary social and emotional issues, this time with a female angel as the anchor of the movie series. This marks a reunion for Lifetime and Jill Scott, who previously starred in the Emmy® nominated Flint centered on the water crisis, the all-African American reboot of Steel Magnolias and Sins of the Mother. Barry Watson also returns to Lifetime for his first non-holiday movie role for network, having previously starred in A Very Nutty Christmas and The Santa Con.
Lifetime's Highway to Heaven follows Angela (Jill Scott), an angel sent back to Earth by God, to help others in need. In the premiere movie, Angela assumes the role of a temporary school counselor and finds herself working alongside the principal Bruce (Barry Watson) as she intervenes in the lives of a troubled student Cody (Ben Daon, The Astronauts) and his father Jeff (Robert Moloney, Riverdale/You Me Her) after the tragic loss of Cody's mother, Melissa (Ashley Ross, A Series of Unfortunate Events). As Angela seemingly works miracles with Cody and Jeff, Bruce is in disbelief when he learns of the divine nature of Angela's work.
The first movie installment of the Highway to Heaven series is produced by Rain Productions and Propagate for Lifetime. Jonathan Baruch and Rob Wolken executive produce for Rain Productions; Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, Gregory Lipstone and Rodney Ferrell executive produce from Propagate; Howard Braunstein is executive producer; Jill Scott and Shawn Gee also executive produce. Stacey K. Black directs from an original script by executive producer/writer Cathryn Humphris and award-winning playwright Angelica Chéri. Cindy Landon and Wayne Lepoff are executive producing on behalf of Michael Landon's estate.
Actor and television director Frank Bonner, who was best known for his role as sales manager Herb Tarlek on WKRP in Cincinnati, has died. He died on June 16 at his home in Laguna Niguel, California, of complications from Lewy body dementia. Mr. Bonner was 79.
Bonner's early television drama guest appearances included The Young Lawyers, Mannix, Nichols, The F.B.I., Hawkins, Emergency!, Cannon (2 episodes), Police Woman, Most Wanted and Man from Atlantis. His early sitcom guest appearances included Nancy in 1970 and Love, American Style in 1974.
He starred as Herb Tarlek on the 1978-1982 CBS sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati. Herb Tarlek is the boorish, tasteless and vain sales manager at WKRP, who is sometimes referred to as "Little Guy" to Mr. Carlson's "Big Guy". He often wears loud plaid suits, with his belt matching his white shoes. Bonner also directed six episodes of the series from 1980 to 1982. The cast included Gary Sandy, Gordon Jump, Loni Anderson, Richard Sanders, Tim Reid, Jan Smithers and Howard Hesseman.
Bonner starred as Father Robert Hargis on the 1988-1990 ABC sitcom Just the Ten of Us. Some of his other sitcom directing credits included Family Ties, Frank's Place, The Van Dyke Show, Who's the Boss?, Head of the Class (2 episodes), The Famous Teddy Z (2 episodes), Evening Shade, You Take the Kids, Harry and the Hendersons (11 episodes), Fudge, The Mommies (4 episodes), Campus Cops, Saved by the Bell: The New Class (4 episodes) and USA High (19 episodes).

Some of his other drama guest appearances included Fantasy Island, Legmen, Simon & Simon, Matt Houston, Crazy Like a Fox, Scarecrow and Mrs. King (3 episodes), Blacke's Magic and Murder, She Wrote.
Mr. Bonner did a wonderful job with his role as Herb Tarlek. He was a classic character with his humor and loud plaid suits. We thank him for his work as both an actor and as a director of many sitcom episodes. He will be greatly missed.
