Curb Your Enthusiasm Returns Yet Again; Archer Returning for Lucky Season 13 on FXX

Curb Your Enthusiasm

The Emmy(R) and Golden Globe-winning comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm, starring Larry David, returns for its ten-episode, eleventh season Sunday, October 24 (10:40-11:20 p.m. ET/PT), with new episodes airing subsequent Sundays at 10:30 p.m. ET. Originally debuting on HBO in 2001 and presenting 100 episodes to date, Curb Your Enthusiasm stars Seinfeld co-creator David as an over-the-top version of himself in an unsparing but tongue-in-cheek depiction of his fictionalized life. The series also stars Susie Essman (Broad City), Jeff Garlin (The Goldbergs), Cheryl Hines (Suburgatory), J.B. Smoove (Mapleworth Murders), Ted Danson (The Good Place) and Richard Lewis (Anything But Love). The comedy series continues to prove how seemingly trivial details of one's day-to-day life - a cold cup of coffee, a stained shirt, a missing toothbrush - can precipitate a catastrophic chain of events. To keep the narrative spontaneous, the series is shot without a script and cast members are given scene outlines and improvise lines as they go.

Archer - Season 12

Emmy Award-winning animated comedy Archer has been renewed for a 13th season on FXX. The eight-episode new season will be available in 2022 and, like the current 12th season, premiere on FXX and be available to stream the next day on FX on Hulu. Archer continues its current 12th season tonight (Wednesday, September 29) with the seventh episode, "Colt Express." In it, a mysterious stranger and a scavenger hunt helps Archer and the gang get a jump on their enemies. Written by Alison Zeidman. Season 12 concludes next Wednesday (October 6). Over its long run, Archer has racked up numerous awards, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program and four Critics Choice Awards for Best Animated Series.

Archer is an animated, half-hour comedy that follows Sterling Archer as he navigates the changing landscape of the spy world. In the current season, Archer and gang face a new threat: a spy conglomerate known as IIA (International Intelligence Agency). With a limited number of spy jobs up for grabs, can The Agency compete against the soulless vultures of IIA, or will our mom-and-pop spy agency be the next to get swallowed alive? The series features the voices of H. Jon Benjamin as the (former) world's greatest spy, "Sterling Archer;" Aisha Tyler as the spy with marital problems, "Lana Kane;" Jessica Walter as Archer's mother and spymaster, "Malory Archer;" Judy Greer as the loveably crazy office assistant, "Cheryl/Carol Tunt;" Chris Parnell as the top office spy, "Cyril Figgis;" Amber Nash as the positively offensive go-getter, "Pam Poovey;" Adam Reed as the opportunist, "Ray Gillette" and Lucky Yates as the unscrupulous scientist, "Algernop Krieger."

Fri-Yay: Ted Lasso Wins Big at The Emmys; CBS Expands Ghosts Premiere to One-Hour; Remembering Willie Garson of Sex and the City, Director Jay Sandrich

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Ted Lasso

by Vincent

This Sunday was a big one for Apple TV+, as it received its first Emmy award victory with Ted Lasso - and then received multiple more victories with Ted Lasso over the course of the night. The sports comedy series, which has easily been the most buzzed about comedy of the year, took home all but the Lead Actress category in the comedy column last night, including the big prize, Outstanding Comedy Series. In my mind, it's a very deserving award. Ted Lasso is an excellent show with lots of humor and heart and is easily the best comedy series currently airing.

It was a big night in general for streaming services. For the first time in its history, Netflix won the most Emmys of any streaming service or channel of the night, including taking home Outstanding Drama Series for The Crown and Outstanding Limited Series for The Queen's Gambit. It continued the overall trend of streaming services winning big and traditional channels losing out. Overall, it was another Emmys that proved the media landscape is rapidly changing.

Paramount+ Renews Rugrats for 2nd Season; Eva Longoria Producing Disney Sci-Fi Comedy

Rugrats

Paramount+, the streaming service from ViacomCBS, announced the renewal of the original series Rugrats for a second season (13 episodes) in the U.S., Latin America, Australia and Canada, with more adventures from the colorful imaginations of Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Susie, Phil and Lil. The all-new Rugrats first premiered on Paramount+ in May and the next eight episodes of season one will be available to stream exclusively on the service beginning Thursday, Oct. 7. From Nickelodeon Animation Studio, the brand-new Rugrats series is a reimagining of the classic ‘90s hit that features rich and colorful CG-animation and follows the babies—Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Susie, and Phil and Lil—as they explore the world and beyond from their pint-sized and wildly imaginative point-of-view. Following the season one run on Paramount+, the series will air on Nickelodeon at a later date to be announced.

In the all-new season one episodes, the babies will continue to find themselves in a variety of situations by using their wild imaginations, including defeating an “outer space villain,” traveling through Chuckie’s dad’s body, embarking upon a daring mission to break Angelica out of preschool and more. The new batch of episodes also includes a half-hour, Halloween-themed special where Tommy needs his friends’ help to save Angelica after she turns into a werewolf at a scary Halloween party as their parents seem to disappear one by one. The series stars EG Daily (Tommy Pickles), Nancy Cartwright (Chuckie Finster), Cheryl Chase (Angelica Pickles), Cree Summer (Susie Carmichael), and Kath Soucie (Phil and Lil DeVille), all of whom are reprising their iconic roles in this new series.

The original adventurous babies' voice cast is joined by new voices, including Ashley Rae Spillers and Tommy Dewey (Tommy's parents, Didi and Stu Pickles); Tony Hale (Chuckie's father, Chas Finster); Natalie Morales (Phil and Lil's mother, Betty DeVille); Anna Chlumsky and Timothy Simons (Angelica's parents, Charlotte and Drew Pickles); Nicole Byer and Omar Miller (Susie's parents, Lucy and Randy Carmichael); and Michael McKean (Grandpa Lou Pickles).

Eva Longoria

Actress, producer and director Eva Longoria, CEO of UnbeliEVAble Entertainment, and its president, Ben Spector, are in development with Disney Branded Television on a science-fiction comedy based on the award-winning book Sal & Gabi Break the Universe, written by Carlos Hernandez and published by Disney-Hyperion under its popular Rick Riordan Presents imprint. Sal & Gabi won the American Library Association's Pura Belpré Award in recognition of its portrayal of the Latino cultural experience. Also attached to the Disney Branded Television project is writer/producer Nelson Soler (Disney Channel's Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion, Freeform's Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists). The story revolves around teenage Sal Vidón, who discovers he has the ability to reach into time and space to retrieve things from other universes after meddling with his father's scientific experiments. He quickly enlists his friend Gabi to set off on a quest to find and bring back his deceased mother, only to learn that tampering in alternate universes could ultimately put their entire universe at risk.

Family Guy, King of the Hill, The Cleveland Show and Futurama Joining FXX; HBO Max's Ten Year Old Tom Details

Family Guy

FXX cements its status as the go-to cable network for adult animated comedies when the full Family Guy catalog joins the network this week. With the addition of all episodes of past seasons of Family Guy on its schedule, FXX is now the only cable channel that airs such a comprehensive collection of the most popular animated adult comedies of all time, including Archer, Bob Burgers, The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, King of the Hill and The Simpsons (the latter now airing for the first time in a strip daily). In addition to Family Guy, the network is launching King of the Hill and The Cleveland Show this week, while Futurama joins this powerhouse comedy lineup in November 2021.

Family Guy will air weekly Monday-Tuesday (8:00 p.m. - midnight), Thursday (8:00 p.m.-10 p.m.), Saturday (8:00 p.m. - midnight) and Sundays (10:00 p.m.- midnight). The series will also continue to air on Freeform Fridays (4:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m.) and stream exclusively on Hulu. Futurama air dates are pending. Family Guy is an American animated sitcom created by Seth MacFarlane. The series centers on the Griffins, a dysfunctional family consisting of parents Peter Griffin and Lois Griffin; their children Meg Griffin, Chris Griffin, and Stewie Griffin; and their anthropomorphic pet dog Brian Griffin. The show is set in the fictional city of Quahog, Rhode Island, and exhibits much of its humor in the form of cutaway gags that often lampoon American culture.

Ten Year Old Tom

The Max Original Ten Year Old Tom, a bitingly-funny ten episode adult animated comedy series, will debut Thursday, September 30 on HBO Max. The series is created and written by Steve Dildarian (The Life & Times of Tim), who will executive produce with TV animation veteran Nick Weidenfeld (The Boondocks, Rick & Morty). Dildarian plays the lead character Tom alongside a talented cast of actors and comedians including Byron Bowers, Todd Glass, Gillian Jacobs, Edi Patterson and John Malkovich with guest appearances by David Duchovny, Jennifer Coolidge, Natasha Lyonne, Mark Proksch, Tim Robinson, George Wallace and more.

Ten Year Old Tom follows the misadventures of an average kid as he contends with questionable guidance from the well-meaning grownups around him. Being a kid is hard enough for Tom, but when bad influences seem to lurk around every corner – from litigious parents and drug dealing bus drivers to school administrators who want to sleep with his mom – it’s downright impossible. While the adults in Tom’s life certainly mean well, they just can’t manage to lead by example.

  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine came to an end this week, but don't read this unless you're OK with spoilers. (Vulture)

  • Similarly, another 20 year tradition is about to end at TBS, as Seinfeld leaves to go to Comedy Central (and also Netflix, in an unrelated deal) on October 1. (Deadline)
  • It may be a while before we know who'll take over as host of Jeopardy!, but in the meantime, we have two interim hosts. (NPR)
  • Hulu's Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for a second season. (SitcomsOnline)

Fri-Yay: NBC Reportedly Wants to Reboot The Office; Remembering Norm Macdonald of The Norm Show/Norm

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

The Office

by Vincent

A few weeks ago, reports came out that NBC wants to reboot The Office. Whether the reboot would feature the original cast or if it would be a refresh (like The Wonder Years or One Day at a Time) is obviously not clear. Still, it's hard for me to see a situation where this Office reboot is a good idea. Simply put, while The Office is a modern classic, the show is both too outdated and too modern to work as a reboot this time.

First off, simply not enough time has passed since The Office ended for it to warrant a reboot. The Office hasn't even been off the air for ten years - it ended 8 years ago, in 2013. It also still remains incredibly popular, so any Office reboot would simply have too many comparisons to the original series, and fans would inevitably be unhappy at any changes made. At the same time, The Office was also very much a show of its time, and many of the inappropriate boss reactions that made the show work so well might play differently in today's cultural environment. Let's enjoy the original Office and if its creators want to make new content, come up with new, original series instead.

Norm Macdonald

Canadian stand-up comedian, writer, and actor Norm Macdonald, who starred as Norm Henderson on The Norm Show (aka Norm), has died. He died on September 14 from acute leukemia at a hospital in Pasadena, California. He had been diagnosed nine years prior, though he disclosed his diagnosis to only a few close friends and family members. Mr. Macdonald was 61.

Macdonald's early television appearances included a 1990 episode of Star Search as a stand-up comedy competitor and a 1991 episode of the HBO stand-up series One Night Stand. He worked as a writer for The Dennis Miller Show in 1992. He worked as a story editor on four episodes and wrote two episodes of Roseanne in 1992 and 1993. In 1993, he guest starred on an episode of The Jackie Thomas Show.

Norm Macdonald - Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live

He was hired as a writer and cast member on Saturday Night Live in 1993. He spent a total of five seasons on the show until 1998. He was the anchor of the Weekend Update segment starting in 1994 for three and a half seasons. Some of his impressions included Larry King, Burt Reynolds, David Letterman, Quentin Tarantino, Charles Kuralt and Bob Dole. He returned to host the October 23, 1999, show. He reappeared as Burt Reynolds on Celebrity Jeopardy! on the May 16, 2009, show.

Norm

Macdonald starred as Norm Henderson on the 1999-2001 ABC sitcom The Norm Show (later shortened to Norm). Norm Henderson is a former NHL hockey player who is banned for life from the league because of gambling and tax evasion. He avoided jail time by agreeing to five years of community service as a full-time social worker. The first season aired as The Norm Show before they shortened the title to Norm in season two to avoid a legal conflict with Michael Jantze's comic strip The Norm. Macdonald also worked as a producer for the series, which aired for 3 seasons and 54 episodes. The cast included Laurie Metcalf, Ian Gomez, Amy Wilson (season 1), Bruce Jarchow (season 1), Max Wright, Faith Ford (seasons 2-3), Artie Lange (seasons 2-3) and Nikki Cox (recurring).

A Minute with Stan Hooper

He next starred as Stan Hooper on the short-lived 2003 Fox sitcom A Minute with Stan Hooper. Stan Hooper is a famous newspaper columnist turned television commentator. He moves his family from their New York home to a small Wisconsin town, Waterford Falls, where he hopes to better get in touch with Middle America in an attempt to make his weekly minute-long television commentaries more appealing to a larger audience. Macdonald also worked as an executive producer for the series. They produced 13 episodes, although only 6 episodes were aired. The cast included Penelope Ann Miller, Brian Howe, Eric Lively, Reagan Dale Neis, Garret Dillahunt, Daniel Roebuck and Fred Willard.

Norm Macdonald on The Middle

Macdonald had a recurring role as Orville "Rusty" Heck, Mike's (Neil Flynn) irresponsible, dim-witted but well meaning brother, on ten episodes of the ABC sitcom The Middle from 2010 to 2018. Some of his other sitcom guest appearances included The Larry Sanders Show, The Drew Carey Show (2 episodes), NewsRadio, Oliver Beene, My Name Is Earl (2 episodes), Real Rob and Girlboss (3 episodes). He worked as a consultin producer on Roseanne in 2018.

He was also known for his voice work. He voiced the character of Lucky the Dog in Dr. Dolittle (1998), Dr. Dolittle 2 (2001), Dr. Dolittle 3 (2006), Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief (2008) and Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts (2009). He provided the voice of Pigeon on Mike Tyson Mysteries from 2014 to 2020. He voiced Glumshanks on Skylanders Academy from 2016 to 2018. Macdonald was the voice of Lieutenant Yaphit, an amorphous, gelatinous, shapeshifting engineer on The Orville from 2017 to 2019. His other voice credits included Family Guy (2 episodes) and The Fairly OddParents (2 episodes).

He hosted Sports Show with Norm Macdonald on Comedy Central in 2011. He co-hosted the podcast Norm Macdonald Live with Adam Eget for three seasons from 2013 to 2017. They worked again on Netflix's Norm Macdonald Has a Show in 2018.

Macdonald co-wrote and starred as Mitch Weaver in the 1998 film Dirty Work. Some of his other film credits included Billy Madison (1995), The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Man on the Moon (1999) and Screwed (2000). He made cameos in Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999), The Animal (2001), Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo (2005), Funny People (2009), Grown Ups (2010), Jack & Jill (2011) and The Ridiculous Six (2015).

Mr. Macdonald was a true comedy genius. He was a master with his quick wit and deadpan delivery. His late night talk show appearances were always funny. He was very good on The Norm Show/Norm. The underrated sitcom should be re-released on DVD. We thank him for the many laughs and entertainment he brought us during his career. He will be greatly missed.
