Remembering Legendary Sitcom Director James Burrows; The Audacity Season 2 Coming in 2027

Emmy-winning television director and producer James Burrows, who worked on Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Friends and Will & Grace, has died. He died on June 19. Mr. Burrows was 85.

Burrows's television career began in 1965 as a dialogue coach on the ABC sitcom O.K. Crackerby!, which starred Burl Ives and was created by Burrows's father, Abe. He started his directing career with The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1974. He directed four episodes from 1974 to 1976. Some of his other early sitcom directing credits included Phyllis (19 episodes), The Bob Newhart Show (11 episodes), The Tony Randall Show, Laverne & Shirley (8 episodes), Busting Loose (6 episodes), Rhoda (4 episodes), The Betty White Show (2 episodes) and Free Country (2 episodes).

He directed 75 episodes (Seasons 1-4) of the ABC sitcom Taxi from 1978 to 1982. He won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series in 1980 and 1981.

Burrows co-created Cheers with brothers Glen and Les Charles. He directed 236 of the 275 episodes of the 1982-1993 NBC sitcom. The show was produced by Charles/Burrows/Charles Productions in association with Paramount Television. Nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for all 11 of its seasons on the air, it earned 28 Primetime Emmy Awards from a record of 117 nominations. He won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series in 1983 and 1991. He was one of the creators and producers of the 1987 NBC sitcom The Tortellis, which was the first spin-off of Cheers.

He directed 32 episodes of the NBC sitcom Frasier from 1993 to 1997. In 1993, he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the pilot "The Good Son." He directed four episodes of the 2023-2024 Paramount+ revival.

Burrows directed 15 episodes of the NBC sitcom Friends from 1994 to 1998. He received a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the 1994 episode "The One with the Blackout" from Season 1.

He directed every episode of the NBC sitcom Will & Grace, both during its initial eight-year run (1998-2006) and its later three-year revival (2017-2020). He received twelve Primetime Emmy Award nominations for the series, which won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2000.

Burrows directed over 50 television pilots. Some of his other sitcom directing credits included The Associates (4 episodes), Best of the West (3 episodes), Dear John (2 episodes), Cafe Americain (3 episodes), Partners (1995-1996, 10 episodes), NewsRadio (7 episodes), 3rd Rock from the Sun (2 episodes), Men Behaving Badly (7 episodes), Fired Up (4 episodes), George & Leo (3 episodes), Caroline in the City (21 episodes), Union Square (8 episodes), Dharma & Greg (2 episodes), Two and a Half Men (2 episodes), The Class (19 episodes), Back to You (17 episodes), Gary Unmarried (36 episodes), Romantically Challenged (4 episodes), Partners (2012-2013, 12 episodes), The Millers (32 episodes), 2 Broke Girls (4 episodes), Mike & Molly (49 episodes), Crowded (9 episodes), Man with a Plan (9 episodes), Superior Donuts (8 episodes) and B Positive (3 episodes). He directed all 10 episodes of the Hulu sitcom Mid-Century Modern in 2025.

He executive produced the Emmy Award–winning ABC specials Live in Front of a Studio Audience, including Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons in 2019, All in the Family and Good Times in 2019, and The Facts of Life and Diff'rent Strokes in 2021.

Some of his other producing credits included The Class, Back to You, Gary Unmarried, Romantically Challenged, Mike & Molly, Partners (2012-2013), The Millers, Crowded, Superior Donuts, Man with a Plan, Will & Grace and Mid-Century Modern.

Burrows had cameo appearances in several of the shows for which he directed. Some of his acting appearances included Rhoda, Phyllis, The Bob Newhart Show, Cheers, Friends and Will & Grace. He appeared as a fictionalized version of himself directing the show-within-a-show in 8 episodes of the 2005 HBO series The Comeback, as well as its subsequent seasons in 2014 and 2026.

NBC aired a special tribute on February 21, 2016, titled Must See TV: An All-Star Tribute to James Burrows featuring cast reunions from many of the series Burrows directed such as Cheers, Taxi, Friends, Frasier, The Big Bang Theory, Will & Grace, and Mike & Molly.

He was interviewed for The Interviews: An Oral History of Television on December 17, 2003. He released his book, Directed by James Burrows: Five Decades of Stories from the Legendary Director of Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Friends, Will & Grace, and More, in 2022.

Mr. Burrows directed over 1,000 episodes of television during his legendary career. He received numerous accolades, including 11 Primetime Emmy Awards and five Directors Guild of America Awards. He was honored with the Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. We thank him for his work on many sitcoms. He was one of the best to ever do it. He will be greatly missed.

We also remember actress Daveigh Chase. She starred as Joyce in Oliver Beene. She died on June 16 in Los Angeles from complications of bacterial meningitis and a severe blood infection that led to fatal sepsis. Ms. Chase was only 35.

Chase made her television debut in a 1998 episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Some of her other sitcom guest appearances included Yes, Dear and Inside Schwartz in 2001.

She starred as Joyce in the 2003-2004 Fox sitcom Oliver Beene. Set in 1962 and 1963, the show chronicled the trials and tribulations of the 11-to-12-year-old Oliver Beene (played by Grant Rosenmeyer), in first person perspective. Joyce was his quirky friend. The cast included Grant Shaud, Wendy Makkena, Andrew Lawrence, Taylor Emerson, Amy Bruckner, Amanda Michalka, Maggie Grace (2004) and David Cross as the voice of future Oliver Beene.

Chase starred as Rhonda Volmer in the 2006-2011 HBO drama Big Love. Some of her other television guest appearances included Charmed, The Practice (2000), ER, The Lot, That's Life (2001), Touched by an Angel, Family Law, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Cold Case, Without a Trace and Mercy.

She provided the voice of Lilo Pelekai, an eccentric Hawaiian girl on the island of Kauaʻi who adopts Stitch as her pet dog, in the 2002 animated science fiction comedy-drama film Lilo & Stitch. She reprised the role of Lilo in the direct-to-video film Stitch! The Movie (2003) and the subsequent television series Lilo & Stitch: The Series, which aired on the Disney Channel from 2003 to 2006.

Chase starred as Samantha, the younger sister of Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal), in Donnie Darko (2001) and its sequel S. Darko (2009). She starred as Samara Morgan in the 2002 supernatural horror film The Ring. Her performance earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain in 2003.

Ms. Chase was a talented actress. She appeared in more than 50 television series and films in her career, which spanned from 1998 to 2015. We thank her for her work on television and in films. She will be deeply missed.

AMC Global Media announced that production of the much anticipated eight-episode second season of The Audacity is underway in Vancouver, Canada, with the series returning to AMC and AMC+ in 2027. The satirical drama from Emmy(R) Award-winner Jonathan Glatzer (Succession, Bad Sisters, Better Call Saul) stars a powerhouse ensemble: Billy Magnussen, Sarah Goldberg, Zach Galifianakis, Lucy Punch, Simon Helberg, Meaghan Rath, Paul Adelstein, Everett Blunck, Thailey Roberge and Ava Marie Telek.

Additionally, Miriam Shor (Pluribus, American Fiction, Younger) is joining the cast in a heavily recurring role as Randy Flemming, a shrewd and unintimidated FBI Agent who enjoys the hunt like a cat relishes playing with a mouse while Jess McLeod (Normal, She's Nonbinary) has been upped to series regular for the new season, reprising their role as Harper, the brilliant, pink-haired Chief Technology Officer of the newly formed, data-mining startup P.I.N.A.T.A..

The Audacity is set inside the bubble of Silicon Valley and takes on the warped dreams, outsized egos, and ethical lapses of the self-styled inventors of the future. In a world of jaded billionaires, psychiatrist-gurus, bio-hacked tech bros, AI labs and disillusioned teens being optimized in elite private schools, an audacious data-mining CEO (Magnussen) strives to turn insight and influence into profit and power. A darkly comedic drama that confronts reality, privacy, and the delusions fueling our ever-changing world.

Magnussen stars as Duncan Park, Goldberg as Dr. JoAnne Felder, Galifianakis as Carl Bardolph, Punch as Lili Park-Hoffsteader, Helberg as Martin Phister, Rath as Anushka Bhattachera-Phister, Adelstein as Dr. Gary Felder, Blunck as Orson Stern, Roberge as Tess Phister and Telek as Jamison Park-Hoffsteader.

George Lopez Coming to COZI TV; The Morning Show Season 4 Trailer

The George Lopez sitcom is joining the COZI TV lineup on Labor Day - Monday, September 1. To celebrate, they are kicking it off with a special Labor Day Launch Marathon! It all begins Monday, Sept. 1 at 8AM/7C on COZI TV! The hit family sitcom takes centerstage of the all-time great comedy lineup of COZI TV!

Apple TV+ unveiled the trailer for the highly anticipated fourth season of its the award-winning, acclaimed and global hit drama, The Morning Show. Starring and executive produced by Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, alongside showrunner and executive producer Charlotte Stoudt and director and executive producer Mimi Leder, The Morning Show returns for season four on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 with the first episode, followed by one episode weekly until November 19, 2025.

The Morning Show season four opens in spring 2024, almost two years after the events of season three. Frasier Returns September 19 on Paramount+ for Season 2; Ted Danson's Netflix Comedy Premieres in November

Paramount+ debuted the official trailer and key art for the highly anticipated second season of its original comedy series Frasier, starring Kelsey Grammer. Season two will premiere on Thursday, September 19, with two episodes. New episodes will then drop weekly exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia. The new season will launch later this year in additional territories where the service is available. Produced by CBS Studios, Frasier follows Frasier Crane (Grammer) in the next chapter of his life after he returns to Boston to face new challenges, forge new relationships and—with hope— finally fulfill an old dream or two. Frasier's sophomore season will see Dr. Frasier Crane return to his radio roots at KACL in a Seattle-themed episode. The series is filmed in front of a live studio audience at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles.

In addition to Grammer, the series stars Jack Cutmore-Scott as Frasier's son, Freddy; Nicholas Lyndhurst as Alan, Frasier's old college buddy turned university professor; Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university's psychology department; Jess Salgueiro as Eve, Frasier and Freddy’s neighbor; and Anders Keith as Frasier's nephew, David. Previously announced guest stars for season two include Peri Gilpin, Dan Butler, Rachel Bloom, Yvette Nicole Brown, Greer Grammer, Patricia Heaton, Edward Hibbert, Harriet Sansom Harris and Amy Sedaris. Legendary director James Burrows also returns to direct two episodes.

Netflix debuted a first look at A Man on the Inside (formerly known as A Classic Spy), a new comedy series from creator Mike Schur. A Man on the Inside premieres this November on Netflix. Charles (Ted Danson), a retired man, gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad from a PI and becomes a mole in a secret investigation. From creator Mike Schur, A Man on the Inside is based on the documentary The Mole Agent, a 2021 Oscar(R) nominee for Best Documentary feature. 8 x~30 minute episodes have been ordered. 76th Primetime Emmy Nominations; Frasier Returns September 19

Nominations for the 76th Emmy® Awards were announced from the historic El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, recognizing remarkable programs, extraordinary performances and impactful storytelling across multiple platforms. The live ceremony was hosted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph along with Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego.

The Bear set a new record for nominations in a single year in the Comedy category with 23 (previously held by 30 Rock with 22 nominations in 2009), and Shōgun lead this year's Drama category with 25 nominations. Performers with multiple nominations this year include Quinta Brunson (performance and writing for Abbott Elementary), Jodie Foster (performance and producer for True Detective: Night Country), Donald Glover (performance and writing for Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Jon Hamm (performance for Fargo and The Morning Show), Brie Larson (performance and producer for Lessons in Chemistry), Jonathan Pryce (performance for The Crown and Slow Horses), Maya Rudolph (performance for Loot, performance and music & lyrics for Saturday Night Live, character voice-over for Big Mouth), Andrew Scott (performance and producer for Ripley) and Kristen Wiig (performance for Palm Royale and Saturday Night Live), along with first time nominees Paul Rudd (performance for Only Murders in the Building and narrator for Secrets of the Octopus) and Richard Gadd (performance, producer and writing nominations for Baby Reindeer).

The 76th Emmy Awards will broadcast live on ABC on Sunday, September 15, (8:00-11:00 PM EDT/5:00-8:00 PM PDT) from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE and stream the next day on Hulu. The 76th Creative Arts Emmy Awards take place at the Peacock Theater over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8, with an edited presentation to air on Saturday, September 14, at 8:00 PM EDT/PDT on FXX.

Paramount+ announced that season two of its Emmy-nominated new original comedy series Frasier, starring Kelsey Grammer, will premiere on Thursday, September 19 with two episodes. New episodes will then drop weekly on Thursdays, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada. The series will premiere in the U.K. and Australia on September 20, and its availability in additional international Paramount+ markets will be announced at a later date. Fox Nation Taps Kelsey Grammer for Docudrama; Hallmark Channel's Kansas City Chiefs Christmas Movie

Fox Nation will debut a new four-part historical docudrama on George Washington hosted and executive produced by award-winning actor Kelsey Grammer (Frasier, Cheers). George: Rise of a Revolutionary will premiere on Monday, July 1st dropping all four episodes that week as the country celebrates Independence Day. Over the course of the series, viewers will observe Washington as he grows from a headstrong, risk-taking young soldier determined to fight for the British Crown, into a leading voice of America's growing resistance against England. Told through a compelling combination of dramatic re-creations and expert commentary, George: Rise of a Revolutionary offers a seldom-seen perspective on America's most famous Founding Father. Viewers will witness how disillusionment turned a fearless and flawed young man with a burning ambition to serve the Crown, into a leading voice of the burgeoning backlash against British tyranny, as George becomes a man who is willing to risk it all. Derrick (Hynes), Director of Fan Engagement, is tasked with evaluating how Alana and her family stack up against the other two finalists. As the pair spends time together, it's clear there's a spark between them but when her grandfathers (Begley Jr.) vintage Chiefs, good luck winter hat goes missing, Alana begins to doubt everything she believed about fate, destiny and even questions her future with Derrick - unless, that is, a little Christmas magic can throw a Hail Mary.

This film marks the ultimate celebration of a longstanding collaboration between the two pioneering KC-based brands, officially uniting the Hallmarkies and Chiefs Kingdom like never before. With planning underway for game-day activations, unique co-branded merchandise, and on-air, social, and digital promotion, the multifaceted partnership will engage widespread audiences both on and off the field, with more details to be announced later this year. What's more, this film will fuel the proven track record of viewership crossover between Countdown to Christmas enthusiasts and sports fans. Bob Hearts Abishola Coming to Syndication This Fall; Off Script With The Hollywood Reporter Returns in May

Bob Hearts Abishola is ending its run on CBS this spring but it will premiere in broadcast syndication this fall for a three-year deal on such station groups as Nexstar Media Group, Sinclair, Hearst Television, Tegna, E.W. Scripps, Weigel Broadcasting, Sunbeam Television, Gray Television, Mission Broadcasting, Lockwood Broadcast Group and Bahakel Broadcasting. It will join other fellow Chuck Lorre sitcoms in broadcast syndication - The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, Mom and Two and a Half Men. The sitcom stars Billy Gardell as Bob, a middle-aged compression sock businessman in Detroit who falls for his cardiac nurse, Abishola (Folake Olowofoyeku), a Nigerian immigrant, while recovering from a heart attack. Undaunted by Abishola’s initial lack of interest or vast differences in their backgrounds, Bob is determined to win her heart, and eventually marries her in this comedic examination of immigrant life in America.

The Hollywood Reporter (THR) announced the return of the Emmy(R)-nominated series, Off Script With The Hollywood Reporter with five new episodes of Emmy contenders, featuring themed episodes including Comedy Actress, Drama Actor, Comedy Actor, Drama Actress and Stand-Up. The new season is set to premiere on Friday, May 24, at a new time of 10 pm PT/1 am ET exclusively on IFC and streaming on AMC+. New episodes will continue on Fridays.

Paramount+ Renews Frasier for Season 2; Netflix Orders Series from Maid Showrunner

Paramount+ announced that its new original comedy series Frasier, starring Kelsey Grammer, has been renewed for a second season. Season one currently is available to stream exclusively on Paramount+. Produced by CBS Studios, season two of Frasier will continue to film in front of a live studio audience at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. The series follows Frasier Crane (Grammer) in the next chapter of his life after he returns to Boston to face new challenges, forge new relationships and – with hope – finally fulfill an old dream or two.

In addition to Grammer, the series stars Jack Cutmore-Scott as Freddy, Frasier's son; Nicholas Lyndhurst as Alan, Frasie'ss old college buddy turned university professor; Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan's colleague and head of the university's psychology department; Jess Salgueiro as Eve, Freddy's roommate; and Anders Keith as David, Frasier's nephew. Season one featured guest appearances from original series cast, including Bebe Neuwirth and Peri Gilpin.

Netflix announced the new series, Sirens, a female-driven limited series from Emmy(R) nominated Maid writer/showunner Molly Smith Metzler, and executive produced by LuckyChap Entertainment. Devon thinks her sister Simone has a really creepy relationship with her new boss, the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell. Michaela's cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone, and Devon has decided it's time for an intervention. When Devon tracks her sister down to say WTF, she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be. Told over the course of one explosive weekend at The Kells' lavish beach estate, Sirens is an incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class.

Sirens is the first series out of Metzler's creative partnership with Netflix and is based on her play Elemeno Pea, which she wrote at The Juilliard School. Smith and LuckyChap's previous series at Netflix, Maid, starring Margaret Qualley, spent 14 weeks in the Global Top 10 TV and reached the Top 10 TV in 93 countries. The Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics Choice-nominated series won the Writers Guild Award for Limited Series Writing/Adapted Long Form and an AFI Award.

COZI TV's A Very COZI Christmas Schedule; Young Sheldon to End This Season on CBS

COZI TV's winter holiday-themed broadcast schedule will start airing every Monday in December. CBS announced that the critically acclaimed comedy series Young Sheldon will air a one-hour series finale on Thursday, May 16 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT). Television's top comedy will sign off after the upcoming seventh season on the Network. As previously announced, the new season will premiere on Thursday, Feb. 15 (8:00-8:30 PM, ET/PT). From creators, executive producers and writers Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, Young Sheldon centers on Sheldon Cooper, a once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science, which isn't always helpful in a land where church and football are king. For 12 years on The Big Bang Theory, audiences came to know the iconic, eccentric and extraordinary Sheldon Cooper. This single-camera, half-hour comedy takes viewers through his childhood, as he embarks on his innocent, awkward and hopeful journey toward the man he will become.

• The Wonder Years reboot on ABC got a lot of attention when it started, but after a very disappointing second season in the ratings (ABC's worst show of the year), it has been canceled. (Variety)
• We've got our first look at the Frasier reboot. (Deadline)
• Bill Maher has decided he is returning to the air next week despite the strike, but will other late night talk show hosts look for a loophole to return too? (Deadline)
• If you have Spectrum, the second largest pay TV provider in the nation, you now no longer have cable channels such as Freeform (and never will), as the provider worked out a deal with Disney that brought back ESPN, Disney Channel, and FX, but includes the permanent removal of many other channels, leaving many to wonder if Disney is going to shut them down in the near future. • Meanwhile, Nexstar has been having exploratory talks with Disney about buying ABC, and entertainment mogul Byron Allen has went a step further to make a $10 billion offer to purchase ABC and several of their cable networks (including FX and National Geographic). (Reuters)
• While Byron Allen is trying to buy ABC, his syndicated late night series Comics Unleashed is coming to CBS on Tuesday, as they need strike material to replace the already ended Late Late Show with James Corden. (Hollywood Reporter)

TBS Acquires Modern Family; The Frasier Awards on COZI TV

TBS has expanded its comedy line up by licensing the popular, award-winning series Modern Family which follows the diverse and complex Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan as they navigate daily life. Beginning Monday, September 25, Modern Family will air on weekdays in the network’s 12:30-3:30 p.m. ET/PT time slot. And, starting this week, to further bolster its position as the home of comedy, TBS also will air longer daily marathons of The Big Bang Theory -- a series that currently ranks as the #1 acquired series in cable in 2023. Modern Family has aired on NBCUniversal cable networks the last 10 years (mainly on USA Network and recently on E!). E! will stop airing the sitcom after next week it seems but Peacock will continue to stream (along with Disney's Hulu).

Next week, fans of Frasier can tune in starting Monday, September 18 through Friday, September 22 for the "Frasier Awards" special themed week. In a normal year, we'd be getting ready for the new fall season, but unless you love some reality TV, that isn't going to happen this year... but, we do have some new scripted series in the pipeline for the fall (mostly series that were produced pre-strike), including news about new fall episodes of Frasier and Rick & Morty. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

• A premiere date for the Frasier reboot is set at Paramount+, with the first two episodes also airing on CBS. (Variety)
• There won't be a third season of Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. on Disney+, as the series was cancelled. (Variety)
• It's not clear how the show would have worked out without the star (or perhaps the plan would have just been to cancel the series), but it seems Melissa Joan Hart was nearly fired from Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. (Deadline)
• A season premiere date for Rick and Morty has been set. (Hollywood Reporter)
• A standalone streaming service didn't work out, but a new CNN Hub (including a 24/7 stream that won't be the actual network) is set to launch on Max. (Deadline)

Frasier Returns October 12 on Paramount+; And Just Like That... Renewed for Season 3

Paramount+ revealed a first look and announced the premiere date for the upcoming Paramount+ original series Frasier. Starring Kelsey Grammer, who reprises his EmmyⓇ- Award-winning role as Frasier Crane, the 10-episode season will premiere in the U.S and Canada on Thursday, October 12 with two episodes, and on Friday, October 13 in all other international markets with Paramount+. New episodes will then drop weekly on Thursdays, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada, and on Fridays internationally. In addition, the CBS Television Network will broadcast a special airing of the first two episodes back to back on Tuesday October 17, beginning at 9:15 PM ET/PT (following a super-sized original episode of Big Brother).

Filmed in front of a live studio audience at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, the new series follows Frasier Crane (Grammer) in the next chapter of his life as he returns to Boston with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge and an old dream or two to finally fulfill. Frasier has re-entered the building! In addition to Grammer, the new series stars Jack Cutmore-Scott as Frasier’s son Freddy; Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college buddy turned university professor Alan; Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university’s psychology department; Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate Eve; and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew David.

The first two episodes of the new series are directed by legendary director and television creator James Burrows, who is best known for his work as co-creator, executive producer and director of the critically acclaimed series Cheers, as well as the original series Frasier, Will & Grace and Dear John. This fall marks 30 years since the original Frasier first premiered on television, which still holds the record for most Emmy wins for a comedy series with 37 wins and 107 nominations. The original series is available to stream on Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

Max has renewed the original series And Just Like That..., from executive producer Michael Patrick King, for a third season. The eleven-episode second season debuted June 22 and will conclude August 24.
