Antenna TV Acquires My Favorite Martian for This Spring; 28th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Winners

My Favorite Martian - Bill Bixby & Ray Walston

Antenna TV has acquired the '60s classic sitcom My Favorite Martian starting this Spring. Exact premiere date will be announced soon, but the series will be part of the weekday daytime 50s/60s sitcom block at 12:00pm & 12:30pm (currently McHale's Navy airs in the timeslot). More details will be announced soon when we announce their Spring schedule. The series aired on CBS originally from 1963-1966. Reruns have aired on cable on networks over the years such as AmericanLife TV and TV Land and in the diginet space on COZI TV in 2015. In the series, a Martian crash-lands on Earth and is taken in by young newspaper reporter Tim O'Hara. Disguised as Tim's Uncle Martin, he attempts to repair his ship and keep himself out of trouble. But Tim's nosy landlady, Mrs. Brown, takes a liking to Uncle Martin, which complicates things, as does Uncle Martin's tendency to use his Martian powers at the wrong time. The classic sitcom stars Bill Bixby (The Courtship of Eddie's Father, The Incredible Hulk) as newspaper reporter Tim O'Hara and Ray Walston (Picket Fences) as the Martian whom Tim discovers and passes off as his Uncle Martin. Pamela Britton plays their snoopy landlady, Lorelei Brown.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Multi-Camera Sitcom Pilot Hungry in Development at NBC; Shout! Factory Acquires Distribution Rights to ALF

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! After last week's busy week of news, it's significantly slower this week, but we've got news about a comedy pilot in development at NBC, some new life for ALF, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • The broadcast multi camera sitcom may not be completely dead at NBC, as a pilot called Hungry is in the works (with James Burrows directing the pilot). (Deadline)
  • Shout! Factory, which is more of an online streaming distributor than anything else now, has acquired distribution rights to ALF, but one key highlight from the news is their plan to let people see "restored footage not seen in 30 years," which we imagine implies the unedited episodes that we never got on DVD in the United States. (Deadline)
  • Wendy Williams won't be returning to her show anytime soon, and now it has been announced that the show will be renamed Sherri in the fall, with Sherri Shepherd as host. (CNN)
  • REELZ has announced some new Unknown Stories episodes for a trio of classic TV favorites. (SitcomsOnline)
  • Abbott Elementary is continuing to be a solid performer for ABC, a rarity for a broadcast network comedy in this era. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (FEBRUARY 26 - MARCH 4)

  • Fuller House comes to GAC Family on Monday night.
  • Decades has a Sally Field binge this weekend, with all three of her Screen Gems shows, The Flying Nun, Gidget, and The Girl with Something Extra.
  • You can now watch almost every episode of the forgotten 1980 sitcom One in a Million on Crackle.

Fri-Yay: Abbott Elementary Continues to Impress; Short-Lived Sitcom One in a Million Now on Crackle

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Abbott Elementary

by Vincent

I know I've written about Abbott Elementary before, but it bears repeating just how good this incredible sitcom has been. If you've yet to check it out, please do so on Tuesdays on ABC (or binge on Hulu). The show is an absolute delight, and there has been a lot of talk about the show single handedly reviving the mockumentary format - or even the network sitcom.

What makes Abbott Elementary so good? For one, the show has found a way to appeal to both sitcom lovers and young audiences. A quote from the show goes viral nearly every week on Twitter. Additionally, the show draws in a lot of weekly viewers, showing its connecting to broadcast audiences. In 2022, it's crucial for a network sitcom to straddle this line. If you don't appeal to young audiences, you fail to draw in profitable youth demographics. But if you only appeal to those young audiences, you risk not fitting in with the network landscape and getting poor ratings. It’s getting harder and harder for shows to straddle this line, but Abbott does it with ease.

One in a Million

Crackle has added a very rare short-lived sitcom to its service to stream for free. ABC's One in a Million from 1980. That time when the hysterical Shirley Hemphill of What's Happening!! had her own show and now you can finally watch it. It looks like 11 of the 13 episodes are available to stream. In the series, when a young taxi driver inherits a major corporation and becomes "Chairman of the Board" - her unschooled businessways are remarkably wise in understanding. Start with the pilot, when a millionaire bequeaths controlling stock in his corporation to cab driver Shirley Simmons, she must decide whether to take the money or run the company. The sitcom stars Shirley Hemphill, Keene Curtis, Carl Ballantine, Mel Stewart, Ann Weldon, Richard Paul and Dorothy Fielding.

Abbott Elementary Scoring Big in Multi-Platform Viewing; Fox Announces Celebrities for Name That Tune Season 2

Abbott Elementary

The time-period premiere and second telecast of ABC's Abbott Elementary from Tuesday, Jan. 4 hit 9.0 million Total Viewers and scored a 2.93 rating among Adults 18-49 after 35 days of viewing across linear and digital platforms. In fact, the second episode of Abbott Elementary stood as ABC's highest-rated comedy telecast (new or returning) in nearly 2 years with Adults 18-49 (2.93 rating) – since the 4/8/20 series finale of Modern Family. Abbott Elementary jumped over its December series debut by 27% in Total Viewers (9.0 million vs. 7.1 million) and by 24% with Adults 18-49 (2.93 rating vs. 2.37 rating). After 35 days of multiplatform viewing, Abbott Elementary grew by +5.6 million Total Viewers over its Live+Same Day average (3.4 million to 9.0 million) and soared by +358% among Adults 18-49 over its initial rating (2.93 rating vs. 0.64 rating).

From creator, executive producer and star Quinta Brunson, and executive producers Justin Halperin and Patrick Schumacker, comes Abbott Elementary, a workplace comedy following a group of dedicated, passionate teachers - and a slightly tone-deaf principal - as they navigate the Philadelphia public school system. Despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life, and though these incredible public servants may be outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do - even if they don't love the school district's less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children. Abbott Elementary stars Quinta Brunson as Janine Teagues, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard.

REELZ Announces Three's Company, Cheers, Star Trek Unknown Story Episodes; Lifetime Expands Partnership with Melissa Joan Hart

Three's Company & Cheers

REELZ announced its March 2022 lineup with new originals premiering every week. Among the new originals in March are stories about the power and popularity of movie franchises The Fast and the Furious, Jurassic Park, The Karate Kid and Raiders of the Lost Ark as well as proven pop culture hit TV shows Three's Company, Cheers and Star Trek. The March 2022 lineup begins Saturday, March 5 with Three's Company: The Unknown Story at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT followed by Cheers: The Unknown Story at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT celebrating two iconic sitcoms with stars and storylines audiences loved. Telling the stories of Three's Company from cast conflicts to memorable days on set is Richard Kline whose character Larry Dallas was best friends with Jack Tripper played brilliantly by the beloved John Ritter. In Cheers: The Unknown Story see the incredible journey of the show that stumbled out of the gate with low viewership only to become a TV juggernaut with more than 80 million people tuning in for the series finale. From the bombshell departure of a main character at the height of the show's success to assembling the cast of future stars including Kirstie Alley, Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson and Ted Danson hear from the multiple Emmy Award® winning creators who helped make Cheers a beloved sitcom. And finally on the TV series side, before a few daring Americans had taken one small step on the moon TV audiences had already been enjoying a giant leap in outer space through the groundbreaking show Star Trek. On Saturday, March 12 at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT Star Trek: The Unknown Story explores the series that sparked a pop culture phenomenon that led to multiple movies and TV shows while creating a new type of super fandom in self-described "Trekkies." While fervent fans certainly help drive the success of a show or celebrity that relationship can become toxic and treacherous when lines are crossed and power is abused.

Melissa Joan Hart

Lifetime announced a multi-year deal with Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, Melissa & Joey, Clarissa Explains it All) to star in, direct, and executive produce several movies for the network. Hart will also star in the newly greenlight movie Dirty Little Secret (working title), as a mother hiding her extreme hoarding tendencies that are destroying her family, for the network's Ripped From The Headlines summer slate. GAC Family Acquires Fuller House; Crown Media Extends Lacey Chabert Partnership

Fuller House

We mentioned on Digest this past Saturday that reruns of Netflix's Fuller House are coming to cable network GAC Family, but now we have more details. GAC Family will start airing the Full House revival series next week on Monday, February 28. GAC Family of course started airing Full House as well as of earlier this month. Fuller House will air five episodes every weeknight from approx. 10pm-1:30am, replacing a block of Who's the Boss?, and airing right after seven episodes of Full House from approx. 6pm-10pm. No other changes are being made to the GAC Family line-up, that we mentioned when Full House started. Fuller House ended on Netflix after 5 seasons (75 episodes) in 2020, but one can wonder if it can be revived on GAC Family and continue the storyline without the late Bob Saget?

Lacey Chabert

Crown Media Family Networks and Lacey Chabert (Mean Girls, The Wedding Veil, Christmas at Castle Hart) have signed an exclusive multi-picture overall deal, the company announced. SitcomsOnline Digest: Fuller House Comes to Cable TV; Paramount+ Getting South Park and Beavis and Butt-Head Reboot

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! There is a lot of stuff going on this week (we have about twice as much news as we normally do, and we even had to cut some of it out), including the debut of Fuller House on cable, the end of a popular FX series, and a big change that's still a few years away for new episodes of South Park. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • Fuller House is about to make a debut on cable, as it joins the GAC Family lineup in a little over a week. (People)
  • It's honestly perplexing that CBS sold the streaming rights to South Park to HBO Max anyway given that they were developing their own streaming service at the same time, but in 2025, South Park will move to Paramount+ not only for the library of episodes but new episodes will also debut there instead of Comedy Central (and the new Beavis and Butt-Head reboot, which was planned for Comedy Central, will air there as well). (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Paul Reiser, who has starred in a TV reboot himself, is set to be part of the cast in the new Hulu comedy Reboot that is about a TV show being rebooted. (Variety)
  • A reunion for Martin is set, for BET+. (TVLine)
  • Season 3 is still over a month away, and season 4 is even further off, but both seasons of the FX series Atlanta have already been completed, and they'll also be the last seasons. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • However, sister network FXX sees "no end in sight" for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (which has already dethroned The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet for longest live action comedy) and Archer. (Deadline)
  • CBS has ordered a comedy pilot about high school newspaper reporters who are left as the only news outlet in a small midwestern town after the local newspaper goes out of business. (Deadline)
  • It seems that toxic workplaces have been a theme among daytime talk shows, and now Dr. Phil is the one being accused. (Deadline)
  • How I Met Your Father is getting a second season at Hulu. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (FEBRUARY 19 - FEBRUARY 25)

  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine heads to Comedy Central tomorrow.
  • Decades is doing a Rhoda binge this weekend.
  • Antenna TV has a marathon of The Jeffersons today.

In this hilarious second season, Chad deals with a scandal that quickly ends his presidency, has a surprising new love interest, and gets a visit from his tough-as-nails Iranian grandmother - all while continuing to worry about his popularity, and discovering new ways to relate to his Persian cultural roots. Chad’s epic path to teenage self-realization is not always a straight line--but the support from his family and best friend Peter (Jake Ryan) keep Chad on track, giving him the confidence to help him become who he has always wanted to be – the most American boy in the history of the world.

Returning cast for season two will include Jake Ryan as Peter; Paul Chahidi as Uncle Hamid; Saba Homayoon as Naz, Chad’s mother; Ella Mika as Chad’s sister, Niki; Alexa Loo as Denise; and Thomas Barbusca as Reid. Sara Malal Rowe has also been added to the lineup this season.

Tom Bergeron Guest Stars on American Auto on March 1; Russian Doll Returns This Spring on Netflix

Tom Bergeron and Ana Gasteyer - American Auto

One of the best hosts on television is coming to a sitcom to host a charity dinner. It was previously reported that Tom Bergeron is set to guest star on NBC's American Auto, but now we know when he will appear! He will guest star on the penultimate episode of the freshman comedy airing Tuesday, March 1 at 8:00pm ET/PT in the episode titled "Charity Dinner." Bergeron will play himself and emcee a charity dinner in Detroit for Payne Motors. It's the 9th episode of American Auto, which has its season finale a week later on March 8. Bergeron also has Tic-Tac-Dough, a game show pilot shot for NBCUniversal, that could be a player for them in 2022-23, whether in primetime or syndication. The pilot hasn't been ordered to series just yet, but in the meantime, catch the very likeable Tom Bergeron on NBC's American Auto on March 1 at 8|7c.

From the creator of Superstore comes a workplace comedy that takes the wheels off the automobile industry. Set in Detroit, the corporate executives of Payne Motors are at a crossroads: adapt to the changing times or be sent to the junkyard. Shaking things up is the new CEO, whose leadership, experience and savvy is only slightly offset by her complete lack of knowledge about cars. Luckily, her team has some of the best minds in the business - when they aren't fighting or trying to outwit each other. From the corporate office to the factory floor, the crew of Payne Motors is driving home the laughs. Starring Ana Gasteyer, Jon Barinholtz, Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael Benjamin Washington, Tye White and X Mayo.

Natasha Lyonne - Russian Doll

Netflix comedy Russian Doll is returing for season 2...this spring! No exact premiere date has been announced just yet. Set four years after Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) and Alan (Charlie Barnett) escaped mortality's time loop together, season two of Russian Doll will continue to explore existential thematics through an often humorous and sci-fi lens. Discovering a fate even worse than endless death, this season finds Nadia and Alan delving deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan's most notorious locations. At first they experience this as an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure but they soon discover this extraordinary event might be more than they bargained for and, together, must search for a way out.

The Emmy-winning show returns with Lyonne serving as showrunner and executive producer, and is also executive produced by Alex Buono, Amy Poehler (Paper Kite Productions), Leslye Headland, Lilly Burns (Jax Media), Tony Hernandez (Jax Media), Dave Becky (3 Arts), Kate Arend (Paper Kite Productions), Regina Corrado and Allison Silverman.
