SitcomsOnline Digest: WGA Strike Officially Over; ABC Cancels Home Economics

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, the strike is over... well, half of it anyway. We're learning when late night talk shows will be returning (hint: it's very soon), we have news of the cancellation of an ABC sitcom, and discovering a long list of series that will be removed from Hulu very soon, today to be specific. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • The WGA strike has finally come to a close, and late night talk shows are planning to come back on Monday night, but don't expect a lot of scripted material just yet as SAG-AFTRA still has an ongoing strike. (CNN)
  • It seems that Saturday Night Live might be able to return before the SAG-AFTRA strike is over, as that strike does not affect the show, but nothing official has been said. (Deadline)
  • ABC has cancelled Home Economics, a series that was previously on the bubble. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Byron Allen made a $10 billion offer to buy ABC (and a few other things) from Disney, but despite that talk, it seems that Disney just isn't interested, yet, but that doesn't mean a sale is off the table. (Deadline)
  • Would you like more Deal or No Deal? What if it were on an island and hosted by Joe Manganiello? (Entertainment Weekly)
  • We have said over and over again that DVDs offer permanence that streaming doesn't offer, and this week, we have learned that Hulu is pulling a number of series from the service effective today, including Ally McBeal, The Practice, Hill Street Blues, The Bob Newhart Show, Better Off Ted, and Arrested Development. (Deadline)
  • However, Hulu is adding Moonlighting soon. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 6)

  • Catchy Comedy has a binge of The Abbott and Costello Show this weekend.
  • All of your favorite Fox animated hits return on Sunday night, including The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Bob's Burgers.

Rick and Morty Season 7 Trailer; Fox's Krapopolis Debuts Well

Rick and Morty

Season 7 of Rick and Morty premieres Sunday, Oct. 15 at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim and the trailer is released. Rick and Morty is the hit adult animated series that follows a sociopathic genius scientist who drags his inherently timid grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe. A global phenomenon, the seventh season of Rick and Morty will debut in over 134 countries in 38 languages. In the U.S., new episodes will be available for purchase from digital retailers the day after they premiere on Adult Swim. The new season will also be available to stream in 2024.

Krapopolis

Fox's all-new animated series, Krapopolis, premiered well after an NFL lead-in delivering a 1.2 Live + Same Day rating among Adults 18-49 and 3.6 million Total Viewers and is television's most-watched animation series to debut over the past decade. Dan Harmon's most-watched animated series telecast ever. The #1 entertainment telecast since the post-Super Bowl Next Level Chef premiere (2/12/23, excluding award ceremonies). The #1 original comedy telecast of 2023 (beating the debut of the Night Court re-boot, 1/17/23). The #1 entertainment program among Adults 18-49 for the week of September 18, marking the first time in nearly 25 years an animation series debut was the week's highest-rated entertainment program (since Family Guy's series debut, 1/31/99; excluding summer premieres).

Set in mythical Ancient Greece, the series centers on a flawed family of humans, gods and monsters that tries to run one of the world's first cities without killing each other. Tyrannis, the mortal son of a goddess, is the benevolent king of Krapopolis and is trying to survive in a city that lives up to its name. Deliria is Tyrannis' mother, goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices. Within her extended Olympian family -- forged in patricide and infidelity -- she's known as the trashy one. Shlub, Tyrannis' father, is oversexed and underemployed and claims to be an artist and has literally never paid for anything, in any sense of the word, for his entire life. Stupendous is Tyrannis' half-sister, daughter of Deliria and a cyclops. Hippocampus is Tyrannis' half-brother, the offspring of Shlub and a mermaid, and, obviously, a hot mess, biologically speaking.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • It seems that Dancing with the Stars, which was seen to be the type of show that is safe from the strikes, is not so safe after all, and ABC is considering delaying the season premiere. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • We're less than a month away from Hallmark's Christmas programming, and it will include plenty of new movies. (Deadline)
  • Vanna White is going to be sticking around on Wheel of Fortune for at least a few more years. (Deadline)

SitcomsOnline Digest: ABC Cancels Wonder Years Reboot; Byron Allen Makes $10 Billion Offer to Buy ABC

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This would typically be a busy and exciting week where we tell you about all of the brand new fall series that debut this week, and we're so excited about that... but no. There are still two entertainment industry strikes, and we have almost nothing to offer in this respect. But, it's still a busy new week anyway, with a lot of questions about the future of ABC as well as their cable networks. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • The Wonder Years reboot on ABC got a lot of attention when it started, but after a very disappointing second season in the ratings (ABC's worst show of the year), it has been canceled. (Variety)
  • We've got our first look at the Frasier reboot. (Deadline)
  • Bill Maher has decided he is returning to the air next week despite the strike, but will other late night talk show hosts look for a loophole to return too? (Deadline)
  • If you have Spectrum, the second largest pay TV provider in the nation, you now no longer have cable channels such as Freeform (and never will), as the provider worked out a deal with Disney that brought back ESPN, Disney Channel, and FX, but includes the permanent removal of many other channels, leaving many to wonder if Disney is going to shut them down in the near future. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Meanwhile, Nexstar has been having exploratory talks with Disney about buying ABC, and entertainment mogul Byron Allen has went a step further to make a $10 billion offer to purchase ABC and several of their cable networks (including FX and National Geographic). (Reuters)
  • While Byron Allen is trying to buy ABC, his syndicated late night series Comics Unleashed is coming to CBS on Tuesday, as they need strike material to replace the already ended Late Late Show with James Corden. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • TBS has acquired Modern Family. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (SEPTEMBER 16 - SEPTEMBER 22)

  • Catchy Comedy is going very old this week with a binge of Our Miss Brooks.

Unsolved Mysteries: Behind the Legacy

Unsolved Mysteries: Behind the Legacy is an hour-long tribute to the iconic series that shaped future generations of true crime TV. Sitting down with co-creators Terry Dunn Meurer and John Cosgrove, along with long-time producers and directors of the show, fans will get to pull back the curtain and experience their favorite show in a whole new light. The crew divulges behind the scenes stories, covering all aspects of the show from research to filming to solving mysteries. With never-before-seen outtakes of beloved host Robert Stack and a look into some fan-favorite cases, Unsolved Mysteries: Behind the Legacy honors one of television's most enduring and iconic shows, as well as the fans who were integral to its success. The creators note that it is the loyal viewers who proved what the show always stood for: that someone, somewhere knows the truth.

This program will screen in select Alamo Drafthouse Theaters across the country on October 4. It will then be available on Pluto TV on October 5, and widely on other platforms at a later date. For more information, please visit their website.
