SitcomsOnline Digest: NBC Looking to Reduce Primetime Hours; Community Movie in the Works?

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week is a slow news week, but we are learning about a major broadcast network looking at abandoning the 10 PM hour, the cancellation of a MTV series, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • As streaming media continues to overshadow broadcast networks, NBC is looking at potentially giving up on 10 PM and returning the hour back to affiliates as early as fall 2023, and they may not be the only one. (Variety)
  • Whatever Floribama Shore is (we're being slightly sarcastic), MTV is done with it, presumably because the MTV lineup doesn't have enough time slots to air Ridiculousness. (Deadline)
  • The studio audience is returning to America's Funniest Home Videos this fall. (Deadline)
  • Could we finally be getting to the conclusion of the "six seasons and a movie" for Community? (IGN)
  • ABC is preparing for their celebration of Norman Lear's 100th birthday (which has actually already happened, but the special hasn't aired yet). (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (AUGUST 27 - SEPTEMBER 2)

  • Decades is doing a duo of binges this weekend, with Bridget Loves Bernie first then a marathon of the Barney Miller spinoff Fish.
  • It's not exactly something we're all that interested in around here, but it does have a long history: the MTV Video Music Awards airs on Sunday.

Disney Renews The Villains of Valley View; Nick Kroll Gets Netflix Special

The Villains of Valley View

Disney Branded Television announced the second season renewal of multi-cam comedy The Villains of Valley View, which follows a family of supervillains forced to hide their powers and adopt "normalcy" in suburbia. Currently available to watch on Disney Channel and Disney+, production on season two will begin this fall in Los Angeles. Most recently, premiere episodes of The Villains of Valley View, which launched June 3, 2022, on Disney Channel, rank as the #1 Live-Action Cable series with Girls 6-11. The series also ranks as a Top 5 Live-Action Cable series with Kids and Girls 6-11.

When teenage supervillain Havoc (Isabella Pappas) stands up to the head of the League of Villains, her family is forced to change their identities and relocate to a sleepy Texas suburb. With the help of her effervescent new neighbor Hartley (Kayden Muller-Janssen), Havoc — going incognito as Amy — must somehow hide her superpowers and quell her villainous nature in favor of something she and the rest of her family have fought against all their lives: being normal. In addition to Pappas and Muller-Janssen, returning for season two are series regulars Lucy Davis (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Eva/Surge, James Patrick Stuart (General Hospital) as Vic/Kraniac, Malachi Barton (Disney Channel's Under Wraps 2) as Colby/Flashform, and Reed Horstmann (The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia) as Jake/Chaos.

Nick Kroll

Nick Kroll will make his Netflix stand-up special debut with Nick Kroll: Little Big Boy. The special will premiere globally on Netflix on September 27, 2022. After performing stand-up for 20 years, Nick Kroll makes his Netflix stand-up special debut with Little Big Boy. Filmed at the Warner Theatre in Washington DC, in a set that is hilarious with an emotional undercurrent, Nick shows a bit of his vulnerable side as he talks getting his heart broken for the first time at the ripe age of 33, the power of mothers, his journey to fatherhood, and the trick to farting without making any noise ... and much more. The special is executive produced by Kroll, John Irwin, Casey Spira and Christie Smith. It is directed by Bill Benz. Kroll has conquered a number of comedy mediums on Netflix, as a star and co-creator of animated titles Big Mouth and Human Resources, along with comedy special Oh Hello, On Broadway. Reelz Celebrates 50th Anniversary of M*A*S*H with New Special; HBO Renews Curb Your Enthusiasm for Season 12

M*A*S*H

REELZ announced a new original special M*A*S*H: When Television Changed Forever celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Korean War themed comedy drama that premiered on September 17, 1972 and ran for 11 seasons that would become a beloved television juggernaut culminating in more than 106 million people tuning in for the series finale in 1983—a record that still stands today. Through new exclusive interviews with cast members Jamie Farr (Cpl. Maxwell Q. Klinger), Mike Farrell (Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt) and Jeff Maxwell (Pvt. Igor Straminsky) along with producers and writers the special explores the brilliant series that lasted four times longer than the war it was set in and its delicate straddling of the line between comedy and drama at a time when evening news about the Vietnam War was beaming to television sets every night across America.

M*A*S*H also had many creative firsts never before seen in television dramas which included killing off a main character and weaving together multiple storylines in a single episode. M*A*S*H also broke barriers in television taking bold risks tackling issues of racism, gays in the military and anti-war sentiment. But what viewers didn't see on screen were the struggles that left the show hanging by a thread on more than one occasion including its lukewarm reception by audiences to its first season that almost led to its cancellation. M*A*S*H: When Television Changed Forever premieres Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT.

In M*A*S*H: When Television Changed Forever cast and crew reveal their battles with network executives to keep the show alive, their first days on set, favorite episodes, what they think made the show a mega hit and why it endures today. The special also retraces the franchise history including its source material the 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors and the Academy Award® winning movie M*A*S*H starring Elliott Gould who in a new interview shares the story of how he won the coveted role of Capt. John Francis Xavier "Trapper John" McIntyre. Series executive producer Burt Metcalfe and writers Ken Levine and Gary Markowitz discuss stylistic firsts in the series that were considered risky at the time with episodes shot in different perspectives including a soldier's point of view after being wounded and becoming a patient inside the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital and a black and white documentary style episode complete with real life war correspondent Clete Roberts interviewing M*A*S*H characters. And in true M*A*S*H fashion real events would find their way into key storylines after a fire tore through the Malibu set before production wrapped on the monumental series finale. The two hour series finale was expanded by another 30 minutes after it was decided to weave in stories about the fire much to the satisfaction of network executives who sold 30 second commercial spots in the series finale for the same price as those in the Super Bowl that year. M*A*S*H: When Television Changed Forever is produced by AMS Pictures.

Curb Your Enthusiasm

HBO has renewed the Emmy® and Golden Globe-winning comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm, starring Larry David, for a twelfth season. Originally debuting on HBO in 2001 and with 110 completed episodes to date, Curb Your Enthusiasm stars Seinfeld co-creator David as an over-the-top version of himself in an unsparing but tongue-in-cheek depiction of his fictionalized life. The series also stars Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, Cheryl Hines, Richard Lewis, Vince Vaughn, and Ted Danson. The comedy series continues to prove how seemingly trivial details of one's day-to-day life can precipitate a catastrophic chain of events. To keep the narrative spontaneous, the series is shot without a script and cast members are given scene outlines and improvise lines as they go.

Samantha Harris to Host GSN Game Show; Alan Cumming Gets Showtime Comedy Special

Samantha Harris - Tug of Words

Game Show Network, the leader in game shows and competitive entertainment, has announced Emmy® award-winning television host Samantha Harris as host of its quick-moving wordplay game show, Tug of Words. The second season of the half-hour original series is anticipated to premiere fall 2022. From the producing team behind Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Tug of Words is a fast-paced game where two teams compete to answer word clue questions correctly and pull the flag on the "tug of war rope" to their side. Nexstar Media Group to Acquire The CW Network; Tubi Orders Breaking Bear, New Animated Comedy

The CW - Nexstar Media Group, Inc.

Nexstar Media Group, Inc. announced that it entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a 75 percent ownership interest in The CW Network. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, the current co-owners of The CW, will each retain a 12.5 percent ownership interest in The CW and will continue to produce original, scripted content for the Network. Nexstar, together with its partner stations, is the nation's largest local television broadcasting company and the largest CW affiliate group with 37 CW and CW Plus affiliates, including affiliates in five of the top ten DMAs, accounting for 32 percent of the Network's national reach. The proposed transaction is expected to create value for Nexstar shareholders by solidifying the Company's revenue opportunities as the largest CW affiliate, diversifying its content outside of news, increasing its exposure to the national advertising market, establishing it as a participant in advertising video-on-demand services and improving The CW ratings, revenue, and profitability, by prioritizing programing for the Network's broadcast audience. Mark Pedowitz will continue to serve as The CW's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, with responsibility for day-to-day operations. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter.

Breaking Bear

Tubi (www.tubi.tv) announced that it has greenlit the adult animated series, Breaking Bear. Created by Julien Nitzberg (The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia) and produced by Cartel Entertainment (Creepshow, Twelve Forever and Day of the Dead) and Tom DeLonge's To The Stars Media (Monsters of California, Unidentified), Breaking Bear parodies the tropes of mobster dramas, comically combining elements of Yogi Bear with The Sopranos. Breaking Bear follows the escapades of three bear siblings who decide they have to start selling drugs in order to raise money and save their home after gas companies start fracking next to their cave. The bears soon enlist other forest animals in a scheme that will pit them against oil companies, The Russian Mafia, local Hell's Angels and polar bears who hate anything that isn't white.

High School

Amazon Freevee has released the first footage of its long-awaited new half-hour series High School, an eight-episode coming-of-age comedy/drama based on the New York Times best-selling memoir of the same name from Grammy-nominated platinum recording artists Tegan and Sara Quin. The first four episodes of High School will premiere on Friday, October 14, with new episodes available every Friday exclusively on Amazon Freevee.

Produced by Amazon Studios and Emmy-and Academy Award-winning Plan B Entertainment, High School is a story about finding your own identity - a journey made even more complicated when you have a twin whose own struggle and self-discovery so closely mimic your own. Told through a backdrop of '90s grunge and rave culture, the series weaves between parallel and discordant memories of twin sisters growing up down the hall from one another. High School will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.

The series stars TikTok creators Railey and Seazynn Gilliland in their television debut as the high school versions of Tegan and Sara, respectively. Special guest stars Cobie Smulders (The Avengers, How I Met Your Mother) and Kyle Bornheimer (Marriage Story, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) play the twins' parents, Simone Bates and Patrick Twiley. Esther McGregor is also a series regular as Natalie. Rounding out the cast are recurring guest stars Olivia Rouyre as Phoebe, Amanda Fix as Maya, Brianne Tju (I Know What You Did Last Summer) as Ali, Geena Meszaros (Under the Banner of Heaven) as Lily, CJ Valleroy (NCIS: Los Angeles) as Evan, and Nate Corddry (For All Mankind) as David.
