SitcomsOnline Digest: Frasier Reboot Date Set, With CBS Also Airing First Two Episodes; Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. Cancelled

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! In a normal year, we'd be getting ready for the new fall season, but unless you love some reality TV, that isn't going to happen this year... but, we do have some new scripted series in the pipeline for the fall (mostly series that were produced pre-strike), including news about new fall episodes of Frasier and Rick & Morty. Let's get going!

Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. Season 2 Details; Adult Swim Comedy Royal Crackers Premieres April 2; Remembering Raquel Welch

Disney+ revealed the new trailer and premiere date for season two of the Disney+ Original series Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., which dives into the highs and lows of teen romance, while capturing the beauty of Hawaii. The Disney Branded Television series which was nominated for four CAFE Emmy's is produced by 20th Television and premieres Friday, March 31 on Disney+. When Lahela's (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) first love, Walter (Alex Aiono) returns from the World Surf Tour, he’s not the same boyfriend she said good-bye to months before. But she's not the same girl either. That becomes clear when she meets a bad boy on a dirt bike, Nico (Milo Manheim.) She's faced with a decision: fight for what she knows is true, or give new love a chance. It's all complicated by the pressures of being a teenage doctor. Luckily, she has her family, coworkers and best friend Steph (Emma Meisel) to support her along the way.

Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Lahela 'Doogie' Kamealoha, Kathleen Rose Perkins as Dr. Clara Hannon, Jason Scott Lee as Benny Kamealoha, Matthew Sato stars as Kai Kamealoha, Wes Tian stars as Brian Patrick Kamealoha, Emma Meisel stars as Steph Denisco, Mapuana Makia as Noelani, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman as Charles, Ronny Chieng as Dr. Lee, Alex Aiono as Walter, and joining the cast this season is Milo Manheim as Nico. Season one of Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. is currently available to stream on Disney+. All four seasons of Doogie Howser, M.D. starring Neil Patrick Harris will be available to stream on Disney+ in the U.S. starting March 15.

Royal Crackers

A Bakersfield family's once-successful cracker company dynasty is up for grabs in Adult Swim's newest animated comedy, Royal Crackers. Created by and starring Jason Ruiz, the half-hour series also stars Andrew Santino (Dave), Jessica St. Clair (Veep, American Housewife, The Deep Dive podcast), and David Gborie (Exploding Kittens, All Fantasy Everything podcast). Royal Crackers will debut Sunday, April 2 at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim and the next day on HBO Max. Royal Crackers was once the king of snacks, but the empire is crumbling. When the family patriarch, tyrannical company founder Theodore Hornsby Sr. ends up in a "super coma," the rest of the Hornsbys will take their lack of talent and business acumen and try to make Royal Crackers the success it once was.

Royal Crackers also stars Emmy winner Maile Flanagan (Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks, Naruto, Not Dead Yet) and Fred Tatasciore (Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal). Ruiz serves as executive producer along with Seth Cohen (The Last Man on Earth). The series is produced by Titmouse. The first three episodes of Royal Crackers will debut on Adult Swim on Sunday, April 2, with new episodes premiering weekly Sunday at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT. The series will also debut globally on HBO Max beginning April 3.

Raquel Welch

Actress Raquel Welch was known for her roles in the films Fantastic Voyage, One Million Years B.C. and The Three Musketeers. Her work on sitcoms included some memorable guest appearances and a starring role on Welcome to The Captain. She died from cardiac arrest on February 15 at her home in Los Angeles, California. At the time of her death, she was also suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Ms. Welch was 82.

Raquel Welch and Paul Ford - The Baileys of Balboa

Welch appeared as the glamorous billboard girl and presenter on the ABC weekly variety show The Hollywood Palace in 1964 and 1965. Some of her early sitcom guest appearances included McHale's Navy, Bewitched, Wendy and Me and The Baileys of Balboa (pictured with Paul Ford). She was one of many actresses who auditioned for the role of Mary Ann Summers on Gilligan's Island.

Raquel Welch as Captain Nirvana on Mork & Mindy

She guest starred as Captain Nirvana, an alien bounty hunter pursuing Mork (Robin Williams), in the one-hour "Mork vs. the Necrotons" episode of Mork & Mindy, which aired on November 18, 1979. Mork is captured by a female Necroton warrior named Captain Nirvana and her minions Kama and Sutra. She uses feminine charms to get information about Earth out of Mork's mind.

Raquel Welch on Spin City

Welch had a recurring role as Abby Lassiter, Paul Lassiter's (Richard Kind) mom, in three episodes of Spin City from 1997 to 2000. Some of her other sitcom guest appearances included Evening Shade, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and 8 Simple Rules.

Raquel Welch on Seinfeld

She played an exaggerated and highly temperamental version of herself in the Season 8 finale episode of Seinfeld titled "The Summer of George" in 1997. Kramer is forced to fire Welch from the lead role in a fictional Tony Award-winning musical, while Elaine gets into a "catfight" with her after a chance encounter on the street.

Welcome to The Captain

Welch starred as Charlene Van Ark on the short-lived 2008 CBS single-camera sitcom Welcome to The Captain. She spoofed herself playing a sultry actress. The series, which aired for five episodes, is about a young writer (Fran Kranz) whose life changes when he moves into a legendary old Hollywood apartment building. It also starred Chris Klein, Joanna Garcia, Al Madrigal, Valerie Azlynn and Jeffrey Tambor.

She was a regular as Dianna Brock in the second season of the CBS primetime soap opera Central Park West (also known as CPW) in 1996. She played Aunt Dora in the first season of the PBS drama American Family in 2002. She was a recurring guest star as Rosa, Ricky's (Barry Watson) mother-in-law, in the 2017 Canadian-American comedy-drama Date My Dad.

Some of her other television guest appearances included The Virginian, The Rogues, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and CSI: Miami. She hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live in 1976. She appeared on The Muppet Show in 1978 where she sang the duet "I'm a Woman" with Miss Piggy.

Welch starred as Cora Peterson in the 1966 American science fiction adventure film Fantastic Voyage. She starred as Loana in the British adventure fantasy film One Million Years B.C. in 1966. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Musical or Comedy in 1974 for her performance as Constance Bonacieux in The Three Musketeers (1973). Some of her other film credits included Bedazzled (1967), Bandolero! (1968), 100 Riles (1969), Myra Breckinridge (1970), Hannie Caulder (1971) and Kansas City Bomber (1972).

Raquel Welch on Mork & Mindy

Ms. Welch was a talented and lovely actress. Although she was best known for her work in drama films, she was able to show her comedic side in some sitcoms. It was nice that she was able to poke fun at her reputation as being a diva and difficult to work with. We thank her for the laughs and entertainment she brought us during her career. She will be deeply missed.

SitcomsOnline Digest: HBO Max Nixes Boondocks Reboot; Canadian Sitcom Gets Second Season and a US Home

Run the World Gets 2nd Season; Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. Trailer and Guests Revealed

STARZ announced that the network has greenlit a second season of its hit comedy series Run the World. Rachelle Williams (Love Life, mixed-ish, Survivor's Remorse) joins season two as showrunner and will executive produce alongside Yvette Lee Bowser (Living Single, black-ish, Dear White People) and series creator Leigh Davenport (The Perfect Find, Wendy Williams: The Hot Topic).

Run the World follows a group of smart, funny, and vibrant thirty-something Black women - fiercely loyal best friends - who live, work and play in Harlem. As they strive for world domination, they each navigate career highs and lows, hookups and heartbreaks that causes them to re-evaluate who they are and where they are going. At its core, it's an authentic and unapologetic show about enviable friendship and not only surviving - but thriving together. Run the World stars Amber Stevens West (The Carmichael Show), Andrea Bordeaux (NCIS: Los Angeles), Bresha Webb (Marlon) and Corbin Reid (Valor). The series also stars Stephen Bishop (Moneyball, Imposters) and Tosin Morohunfola (Black Lightning). Erika Alexander (Living Single), Nick Sagar (Queen of the South), Jay Walker (Grey's Anatomy) and Tonya Pinkins guest starred in season one.

Say aloha to Dr. Kamealoha when the Disney+ original series Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. starts streaming September 8, with new episodes premiering every Wednesday. Disney+ also revealed the series' title sequence featuring a new rendition of the iconic Doogie Howser, M.D. theme song re-imagined and performed by music composer Wendy Wang and world renown ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro. List of a Lifetime

As part of Lifetime's commitment to women's causes, Lifetime acquires the moving feature film, List of a Lifetime, as the centerpiece of the network's annual Stop Breast Cancer for Life public affairs initiative. Debuting October 9 at 8pm ET/PT during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the movie is headlined by Kelly Hu (Nash Bridges, Martial Law) whose own mother, grandmother and aunt had breast cancer, Sylvia Kwan (Grey's Anatomy), Patricia Velasquez (Arrested Development), Jane Sibbett (Friends) and metastatic breast cancer thriver, Shannen Doherty (Beverly Hills, 90210, Charmed). Doherty also directed special content as part of Lifetime's Stop Breast Cancer for Life Campaign, in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The special content features Doherty and her co-stars Kelly Hu, Sylvia Kwan and Patricia Velasquez and will air throughout October on Lifetime and LMN and extended off channel through local distributor partnerships. The content will also be shared on Lifetime's social media platforms and on Mylifetime.com.

In the film, when Brenda Lee (Hu) is diagnosed with breast cancer, she's prompted to look for the daughter she gave up for adoption decades ago. After finding Talia (Kwan) and sharing her devasting news, Talia convinces Brenda to make a bucket list of everything she wants to do, promising to help her complete everything on the list. While keeping Brenda a secret from her adoptive parents Diana (Doherty) and Marty (Jamie Kahler, How I Met Your Mother), Talia grows closer to the mother she never knew. Meanwhile, Brenda discovers a meaningful relationship with Talia she didn’t know she needed, and a reason to fight for her life. Velasquez stars as Brenda's best friend, Meg while Sibbett stars as Brenda's oncologist, Dr. Elizabeth Boyer. Jim Klock (Underground Railroad) also appears in the film as Brenda's supervisor, Kevin and Chad Lindberg (The Fast and the Furious) plays Brenda's boyfriend, Mike.

Fri-Yay: What Does the Future Hold for Sitcoms on Streaming Services?; Disney+ Has Its Teenage Doogie Howser

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

On January 1, the unthinkable happened: The Office, arguably Netflix's biggest hit of its acquired collection, was removed from the service. Of course, it wasn't unthinkable, exactly: Netflix first announced this would be happening nearly two years ago, after NBC claimed exclusive rights for the program for its budding streaming service Peacock. But it was still a major blow that caused a lot of outcry on social media. As we enter the next phase of the streaming era - which finds networks and studios increasingly making their own, separately priced streaming services and pulling their content off of where it was previously - it begs the question: will consumers follow their favorite shows, or will they find new shows instead?

It's still too soon to tell if The Office caused an uptick in subscribers for Peacock (which has been around since the summer, but easily has its biggest promotional push now that it has acquired arguably the biggest sitcom of the past 20 years.) But on social media, people aren't responding happy to see The Office in a new home, even with the enticement of extended cuts and deleted scenes. People are angry that their favorite sitcom has been taken away from them, and they seem to prefer venting on social media rather than signing up for Peacock. You might say, "why not just sign up for Peacock? It starts at 4.99/month." But to be fair, the amount of streaming service keeps piling up. To access the library you would've had access to on Netflix alone just 5 years ago, you'd have to sign up for Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Max. Now to add another steaming service to the mix - it's understandable why people are angry, or opting to buy The Office DVDs on Amazon instead (Amazon reported an increase in sales of them after The Office left Netflix.) Still, if Peacock (or any other competing service) continues to add more and more shows, is it possible people will cancel Netflix and migrate to it? The Netflix brand is very strong, so it's going to take a lot for that to happen. But then again, Netflix keeps losing more and more series, and the more studios and networks that make their own Netflix series, the smaller their library will get. That's why Netflix has bet so much on its original programming in recent years. But will that be enough? The streamer has had plenty of original hits, but nothing blockbuster to the level of Orange is the New Black or Stranger Things in a few years now. Plus, reports of viewing activity have shown that long-running network series like The Office tend to be the most popular shows on streaming services due to their place as "comfort TV," and Netflix - with its new policy of ending shows after 3 or 4 seasons (original sitcoms like One Day at a Time, Alexa & Katie, The Ranch, No Good Nick), and keeping seasons to 10 episodes or less - doesn't really make programming of that kind anymore. We'll see where the next few years and the splintering of streaming services leaves sitcoms, but for now, I suggest finding your favorite sitcoms on the streaming services you have and holding them tight. (Also, if you're a Netflix subscriber looking for a show to replace The Office, might I suggest Community?)

Disney+ Orders Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.; TBS Version of Wipeout Announces Hosts

Disney+ announced that a new doctor is coming to the streaming service in 2021. Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. (working title), a re-imagining of the popular ABC series Doogie Howser, M.D., has been picked up to series and is scheduled to go into production later this year. Kourtney Kang (Fresh Off the Boat, How I Met Your Mother) is set to write and executive produce for 20th Television. Set in modern-day Hawaii, the 10-episode comedy follows Lahela "Doogie" Kameāloha, a mixed race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager. Guiding Lahela (and also complicating things) is her family, including her spit-fire Irish mother who's also her supervisor at the hospital, and her Hawaiian "Local Boy" father struggling to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl.

Running for four seasons on ABC from 1989 to 1993, Doogie Howser, M.D. starred Neil Patrick Harris as the now iconic doctor. The hit series catapulted Harris into television stardom and made the term "Doogie Howser" synonymous with kid geniuses. Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. is written and executive produced by Kourtney Kang and produced by 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios. Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar will executive produce and Dayna and Jesse Bochco will produce the half-hour comedy series.

John Cena, Nicole Byer and Camille Kostek

Multifaceted megastar John Cena (Fast & Furious 9, The Suicide Squad) and Emmy-nominated comedian and actress Nicole Byer (Nailed It!, Girl Code) have signed on to host TBS' revival of the adrenalizing and outrageous physical competition series Wipeout. Cena and Byer will command the hysteria of the fan-favorite series by serving up commentary tailored to the all-around hilarity and thrill of the heart-pumping competition, with supermodel Camille Kostek (I Feel Pretty) complementing their presence by serving as the entrenched Host in the Field, covering the contestants' progress throughout each intense round.

The re-imagined series will feature new twists and elements that will push contestants' athleticism, approach, and determination to even greater extremes, all while delivering some wildly epic fails! Each game is three rounds with each round featuring a jaw-dropping, multi-stage obstacle course with numerous strategy and decision points designed to further challenge the stamina of the competitors and deliver even more hilarious and surprising wipeouts! And of course, the iconic staple of the show – the big balls! – are returning with a vengeance. The original series aired on ABC from 2008-2014 hosted by John Anderson, John Henson and Jill Wagner.
