Dave and Gemma host a memorable Thanksgiving in their new home when Dave’s politically incorrect mother, Paula (Marilu Henner), visits from out of town and meets Calvin, Tina and the rest of the Butler family for the first time.

Bob and Abishola finally go on a proper date, which is interrupted by Dottie’s medical emergency.

Christy’s search for the perfect Secret Santa gift leads her to discover Adam has been hiding something from Bonnie. Also, Tammy looks for a job in order to avoid being sent back to prison.

Carol excitedly plans an early Christmas celebration for Jenny, but Jenny’s preoccupied with her secret first date with Daniel. Also, the doctors investigate a case of food poisoning at an office holiday party.

Freshly single, Dan returns to his childhood home for Christmas to find it's in various stages of disarray; Dan meets and instantly clicks with Cora, but she's dating his cousin; Bridget returns to her childhood home after a fight with her husband.

When Wade goes out of town for the day, he panics at the realization that he is the sole caretaker of his children. Also, Delia picks up the girls from school for Wade but is thrown for a loop when Grace tells a clever lie to hang out with her friends. Bonnie reluctantly consults a therapist, Trevor (Rainn Wilson), for help with her ADD, and Christy battles her urge to gamble on sports while helping out at the bar.

The hospital is abuzz when Carol is assigned to care for a star college football player with a broken rib. Also, sparks continue to fly between Jenny and Daniel.

With Christmas quickly approaching, Sean Sr. receives the top honor of being the lector of Midnight Mass; when Sean Sr. invites some unexpected guests to Christmas Eve dinner, Ann starts to unravel.

Katie looks forward to sharing her favorite childhood Christmas tradition with Taylor, but a surprise visit from her mom, Kathryn (Wendie Malick), threatens her holiday cheer. When Wade’s friends encourage him to join a support group for partners who have lost a spouse to help him deal with his anger, Wade’s shocked by the advice he’s given by the host of the support group, Caroline (Betsy Brandt).

When Carol treats an elderly patient with a fever, Mrs. Zahn (Carol Mansell), and her tests are inconclusive, Carol must find a way to work around Dr. Jacobs and hospital policy to take extra time to observe her.
