Digital Digest: Saturday Night Live - The Best of Will Ferrell, Volume 3 DVD Review (8/3)
Welcome to another edition of Digital Digest! Our normal Digital Digest blogger (skees53) as you know is off for the summer and is missed. As always, we have the latest news, upcoming releases for Tuesday, and our DVD review this week is of Universal Home Entertainment's Saturday Night Live - The Best of Will Ferrell, Volume 3. DIGITAL NEWS
We have quite a bit of news this week. Lionsgate has announced that Spike TV's original comedy Blue Mountain State will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 5 a 2-disc set. Pre-ordering for both versions will be available shortly. For now, read info and sexy packaging on the sets. Meanwhile, Comedy Central has announced a best-of South Park release coming out on Sept. 28 titled South Park - A Little Box of Butters, a two-disc set featuring the character Butters. Pre-ordering for this set is also not available yet. Last week we gave you an update on Rules of Engagement - The Complete Third Season, now Sony has revised the packaging. View the new packaging. And don't forget to pre-order Rules of Engagement - The Complete Third Season. The set streets on September 14. Last week we had an update on Ally McBeal - The Complete Third Season, that it was originally supposed to be released by 20th Century Fox this week (July 13) and no new date has been announced. CBS Home Entertainment is celebrating the 50th anniversary for The Andy Griffith Show! The series is already complete on DVD, but fans will get a 50th anniversary edition best-of set on Sept. 28. The Andy Griffith Show - 50th Anniversary: The Best of Mayberry has an MSRP of $24.99. It hasn't been officially announced yet, so stay tuned for details and packaging.

DVD Review: Saturday Night Live - The Best of Will Ferrell, Volume 3

Saturday Night Live - The Best of Will Ferrell, Volume 3 (Universal, $19.98) arrives on DVD on August 3, 2010, and features 61 minutes of admittedly funny skits, commercials, and segments from the classic late night series Saturday Night Live. Normally I would begin this review by talking about the (admittedly hysterical) segments included in this DVD, but something right at the beginning really, REALLY grinds my gears. You see, you did indeed read the first sentence correctly. This DVD set is a mere 61 minutes in length yet if you pay the MSRP - that's right, it is 61 minutes and the SRP is $20. That's $20 for the equivalent of ONE FULL EPISODE of the show. I could understand if perhaps they were including a small compilation of episodes for that price, or even a significantly higher number of episodes for that price, but Universal honestly expects people to shell out anywhere from $10 to $20 for what amounts to essentially one (funnier than usual) episode? Are you kidding me?
For that price range you could buy a full season of some series on DVD (M*A*S*H and Perfect Strangers jump immediately to mind), or alternately you could do up to two months of subscriptions to Netflix which currently offers seasons 1-5 and 31-35 online for full streaming. Several of the sketches from this DVD set come from his hosting stints in recent years, so you'd be getting to see a large portion of the same content anyway, plus you'd get access to a wide array of OTHER content (not the least of which are the complete series of a plethora of quality sitcoms and dramas, including Coach, Murder She Wrote, Dragnet, Miami Vice, Leave it to Beaver, and much MUCH more). Also keep in mind that if you search around on sites such as NBC.com and Hulu.com you're likely to find many of these same clips for free.
Since we're at Volume Three, clearly SOME sucker is buying these sets, so let's do a quick rundown of what's included on this single disc (61 minutes in length):

* Inside the Actors Studio (Kate Hudson as Drew Barrymore) (SNL: 10/14/2000)

Three quarters of the sketches are from after Ferrell left the show. Admittedly, all of the bits included are quality bits. Celebrity Jeopardy never disappoints, and I could listen to Ferrell scream to GET OFF THE SHED! all day. The only sketch that really disappoints is the Luxury sketch, which has that familiar stench that most end-of-show filler has. Given the limited nature of this set surely they could have found SOMETHING else for that slot.
Package art, disc art, and slimcase all follow a consistent design scheme. The random paint splatters have been used before – for example, the design scheme also appeared on the Best of Amy Poehler set I reviewed a while back. The disc comes boxed in a single black case. Sketch list is included on the rear. Front cover, the disc, and the main menu all use virtually identical designs. The ability to select the main feature, individual skits, or the bonus features is available from the main menu. A full version of the current main theme plays in the background, start-to-finish, uninterrupted. People interested in possessing a clean copy of the current theme would be well advised to track down this DVD somewhere and do a quick pull of the menu music on the DVD. Given the availability of nearly everything else on this DVD elsewhere, the presence of a clean, full copy of the current instrumentation of the theme may be one of the most interesting aspects of this DVD. Various transitional music used on the show plays in the background of the sub-menus and this also is nice to have.
Video quality varies *wildly* depending on the age of the clips. The newest clips, ca. 2009, appear absolutely amazing as they were originally filmed in HD. The 2005 clips aren't widescreen but are otherwise nice. The stuff from the mid-late 90s looks to have aged somewhat poorly, and while not overtly bad clearly shows its age in comparison to other material on the set. Audio is a Dolby Digital 5.1 track, but except for when the modern-era clips are playing it's wasted...a Spartan Cheerleaders sketch from early '96 just isn't going to make the use of 5.1 that a sketch from 2009 would make of it. Stops are available between each sketch.
There ARE bonus features, which is amazing given the much larger and expansive sets that DON'T have them. In addition to an animated minute-long photo gallery featuring various Will-related snapshots, there's three very interesting sketches also included – two unaired spots from dress rehearsal and an off-air performance by Green Day featuring Mr. Ferrell. The Dress sketch is from the mid-2000 and is a version of the familiar "Lovers" sketch that never made it to air – featuring the familiar couple out camping with another such couple. The other dress sketch is also from the mid-2000s and features Will Ferrell supposedly haunting a creepy old house. Both sketches run about five minutes. The Green Day performance is them playing their song East Jesus Nowhere from 2009 with Will providing the song with some much needed cowbell and this is also five minutes. Total runtime of special features is approx. 16 minutes.
So, should you buy this set? If you're slavishly collecting every last bit of Will Ferrell or SNL memorabilia? Sure, why not. Otherwise? Are you kidding me?! It's $10-$20 for a glorified clip show lasting as long as one single episode normally runs (61 minutes). Most of the sketches in the set are viewable online, and while the bonus bits are certainly neat they don't come anywhere near justifying spending very real money on a set like this. If you want to pick it up for a quickie rental it's certainly an entertaining way to spend an hour, but it only has a moderate amount of replay value, and by-and-large these aren't the A-tier Ferrell sketches of the late 90s but their slightly downgraded 2000s-knockoffs. At the end of the day, much as I enjoy Will's crazy antics there's no way I could actually recommend buying this. No way. I'll give it a half star more than I have the similar Amy Poehler set, but only because Will Ferrell IS quite a bit funnier. Otherwise, the reasons I had for hating THAT set apply here too.

NBC Fall 2010 Premiere Dates, CW Orders Sitcom from Canada; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of July 19, 2010)
NBC announced today the premiere dates of its new Fall 2010 primetime schedule. Beginning the week of September 20, the premiere week schedule features the debuts of the network's new series - including The Event at 9pm and Chase at 10pm on Monday, Sept. 20; Undercovers at 8pm and Law & Order: Los Angeles at 10pm on Wednesday, Sept. 22; Outsourced at 9:30pm on Thursday, Sept. 23; School Pride at 8pm and Outlaw at 10pm on Friday, Sept. 24. NBC's returning series all return on premiere week as well with Chuck at 8pm on Monday, Sept. 20; The Biggest Loser at 8-10pm and Parenthood at 10pm on Tuesday, Sept. 21; Law & Order: SVU on its new time of 9pm on Wednesday, Sept. 22; Community at 8pm, 30 Rock at its new time of 8:30pm, The Office at 9pm, and the return of the civilian The Apprentice at 10pm on Thursday, Sept. 23; Dateline Friday returns at 9pm on Friday, Sept. 24.
In addition, NBC again launches the NFL season with NFL Kickoff on Thursday, September 9 at 8pm ET when the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints host the Minnesota Vikings in a rematch of last year's NFC Championship Game. Summer is about to get a lot hotter when The CW unleashes 18 To Life, the hit Canadian comedy series about a modern-day Romeo and Juliet. The network will air all 12 half-hour episodes from the premiere season of 18 To Life on Tuesday nights beginning August 3, with back-to-back episodes airing at 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. ET.
In the premiere episode of 18 To Life, when Tom and Jessie - 18-year-old next-door neighbors who have grown up together – run off and get married, their warring families are forced to become one in this hilarious multi-generational half-hour about relationships, true love, and who takes out the garbage. The series explores intimate relationships in combustible combinations as husband-wife, mom-dad, and in-laws all struggle to influence the newlyweds and control the extended family's destiny. Tom and Jessie move into his parents' attic and their marriage becomes public property, creating an endless string of challenges for the couple. As this new love blooms audaciously amidst the two settled marriages, it stirs up new frictions and old passions in both sets of parents.
18 To Life stars Stacey Farber (Degrassi: The Next Generation) and Michael Seater (Life With Derek) as the young lovers, along with Peter Keleghan, Al Goulem, Ellen David, and Angela Asher (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as the parents, as well as Jesse Rath, and Tiio Horn.
It certainly is the summer of Canadian series as ABC has Rookie Blue and The Gates, CBS has The Bridge and Flashpoint, and NBC has Persons Unknown. Previously, 18 To Life was being co-developed with ABC, but they passed. The show, which has just begun production on its second season in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, airs in Canada on CBC Television. The series is distributed internationally by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
If the show does well, The CW would likely air that second season.

The Cleveland Show, Burn Notice Sold to Syndication; New Seasons for Rookie Blue, Good Luck Charlie
Turner cable has acquired the off-network rights to Fox's Family Guy spin-off The Cleveland Show from Twentieth Television. The animated comedy will run on both Adult Swim and TBS, which will share the show like they do with parent series Family Guy. Adult Swim (the late night block on Cartoon Network) and TBS will both get The Cleveland Show starting in Fall 2013.
Variety reports that Turner paid around $500,000 an episode. The series just finished its freshman season and will return next season on Fox, but Fox even ordered a third season already. Local broadcast syndication is still not done and probably will take a few years still. It would start on local stations in Fall 2013 as well.
The Cleveland Show is the fourth freshman series already getting cable deals, joining NCIS: Los Angeles, Modern Family and Glee. Three of those four series come from Twentieth Television. NCIS: Los Angeles and Modern Family will air on USA Network starting Fall 2013 and Glee will air on Oxygen starting Fall 2013. All four series still have local broadcast syndication deals to come in a few years, so stay with us.
Moving on to local broadcast syndication, Twentieth Television has sold the USA Network original series Burn Notice in syndication to the Fox Television Stations as well as to Sinclair and Gray stations, representing 60% of the US for a Fall 2012 launch. The one-hour drama starring Sharon Gless will be scheduled in weekend syndication in top ten markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington, D.C. Sharon Gless was just nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Before the Fall 2012 launch, Burn Notice repeats will be seen on MyNetwork TV primetime this fall (2010) on Wednesday nights from 8-10pm, as we previously mentioned.

ABC and Canwest jointly announced the renewal of this summer's number one new scripted series Rookie Blue. The drama was renewed for a second season just three weeks following its highly rated premiere on ABC.
Rookie Blue stands as the most-watched television show in summer's Thursday's 9:00 p.m. hour. Sparked by this positive viewer response to the series, the second season is currently in development and will move into production in Toronto next month.
For ABC, the new series ranks second on Thursday night among the broadcast networks to Fox's time-slot veteran So You Think You Can Dance among young adults (A18-34/A18-49). In Adults 18-49, Rookie Blue's premiere telecast stands as TV's top-rated summer scripted series debut in over 1 year and ABC's highest in nearly 6 years – since 5/26/09 and 7/18/04, respectively. Rookie Blue is producing year-to-year gains for ABC in the hour of 4.2 million viewers and 125% in Adults 18-49, from the network's Summer 2009 averages in the time slot. Rookie Blue also was the highest-rated premiere for a Canadian drama series on any network in over a decade.
Shot entirely on location in Toronto, Rookie Blue features Missy Peregrym (Reaper, life as we know it), Gregory Smith (Everwood), Charlotte Sullivan, Enuka Okuma (24) and Travis Milne. Rounding out the cast is Ben Bass, Eric Johnson, Matt Gordon, Noam Jenkins (Flashpoint) and Melanie Nicholls King (The Wire).
In tonight's (July 15) episode, "Signals Crossed," Andy (Missy Peregrym) trades in her uniform for something more risqué when she goes undercover as a prostitute. Tensions run high when Dov (Gregory Smith) puts an informant's life in jeopardy and it's up to Andy to infiltrate a risky gun deal in progress to save her.
Disney Channel has ordered up a second season of its newest out-of-the gate sitcom hit, Good Luck Charlie -- just three months after its premiere. Development has also begun on a holiday-themed Good Luck Charlie Disney Channel Original Movie. The movie, being written by Geoff Rodkey, will star the talented series cast, Bridgit Mendler, Jason Dolley, Bradley Steven Perry, Mia Talerico, Leigh-Allyn Baker and Eric Allan Kramer.
In 2Q10, Good Luck Charlie ranked as the No. 1 series on television among Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14, posting double-digit gains year to year among both demographics and defeating its time period competition by triple digits.
In the series, the Duncans' lives are turned topsy turvy with the arrival of a new baby sister, Charlotte (AKA Charlie). When parents Bob and Amy return to work, they enlist the help of their two teenagers, Teddy and PJ, and 10-year-old son Gabe to care for Charlie. Now the older siblings have to pitch in and get familiar with all things baby while navigating typical teen lives. Each episode features Teddy's video diary, one she's creating for Charlie to use for advice after Teddy has grown up and moved out.

Hallmark Channel Acquires New Family Drama; Fox Announces Fall 2010 Premiere Dates
The Hallmark Channel has acquired another series. This time it is a drama and will premiere in less than 2 weeks on Monday, July 26, 2010. Beginning July 26, Doc, starring Billy Ray Cyrus, joins the schedule Monday-Friday at 6pm. Doc is already airing on cable network GMC (Gospel Music Channel) during weekdays at 3pm and 10pm, but it is unclear as of this writing if they will still air it come July 26. I'm guessing they will, though. Doc originally aired from 2001-2004 on PAX (now known as ION Television) and it last aired on ION Television around late 2007. It joined the GMC line-up in June, 2009.
So what is it replacing? First, beginning next Monday (July 19, 2010), another airing of Little House on the Prairie will replace an hour of M*A*S*H in the 5pm hour. Also, for week of July 19 only at 6pm, Touched by an Angel will replace the second hour of M*A*S*H. Then the following week Doc takes over, as we mentioned. This means M*A*S*H is off the line-up totally once again after this week. Little House on the Prairie will be extended to 3-6pm and Touched by an Angel will air 6-9pm next week, before Doc takes that 6pm hour starting July 26.
Everything else remains intact, and yes that means the sitcoms like Who's the Boss?, I Love Lucy, The Golden Girls, The Partridge Family, and Cheers! Hallmark says M*A*S*H is on a hiatus only...so stay with us if it returns at some point again. This fall, Tuesdays feature a night of pitch-perfect comedy beginning Sept. 21 with the return of Glee now at 8:00 PM ET/PT and the series premieres of new family comedy Raising Hope in the 9:00 PM ET/PT half-hour and new romantic comedy Running Wilde at 9:30 PM ET/PT starring Will Arnett and Keri Russell. On Wednesday, Sept. 22, things heat up for Gordon Ramsay in the two-hour premiere of the eighth season of Hell's Kitchen from 8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT. The series will run two-hour episodes until Nov. 10 when Lie to Me returns Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 8:00 PM ET/PT, shifting Hell's to 9:00 PM ET/PT. The thrill is on Thursdays when both Bones (8:00 PM ET/PT) and Fringe (9:00 PM ET/PT) return beginning Sept. 23.

ION Television August 2010 Has No Family Feud; My Boys Season 3 Marathon In Time for Season 4
ION Television will make some more daytime changes to its schedule in August 2010. The changes actually will start on Monday, July 26, and will see Family Feud leave the line-up. The series currently airs during a weekday two-hour block from 3-5pm. A three-hour block of Ghost Whisperer will air instead from 3-6pm, as Ghost Whisperer was already airing at 5. Ghost Whisperer's 6pm hour will be replaced by Without a Trace, so that series will air weekdays from 6-9pm. Everything else on weekdays will remain the same as it is now.
On weekends, Sundays will now have movies start a bit earlier, so M*A*S*H and My Name is Earl won't have set times anymore and will air anywhere usually from 3-5pm or 3-4:30pm. Whatever happens, Earl will air twice.
ION Television movie premieres for August 2010 are The Fifth Element (1997), The Siege (1998), The Whole Ten Yards (2004), and Ocean's Thirteen (2007). Encore airings for the month are The Pledge, Disclosure, Paycheck, Bloodsport, Cocktail, Running Scared, Elektra, Daredevil, and Men of Honor.

As fans of TBS's comedy series My Boys eagerly await the launch of the fourth season, TBS is offering new and returning viewers a chance to catch up on what happened during the third season. The day before the new season begins, TBS will present a three-hour marathon of the best episodes from last season. The My Boys marathon kicks off Saturday, July 24, at 12:30 p.m. (ET/PT). The fourth season of the series launches Sunday, July 25, with two back-to-back episodes at 10 p.m. (ET/PT).
If you don't know by now, My Boys is a fresh and wry comedy that follows the lives of a Chicago sportswriter and her circle of mostly guy friends. Jordana Spiro stars, along with Kyle Howard, Reid Scott, Michael Bunin, Jamie Kaler and Kellee Stewart. During the fourth season PJ (Spiro) and her boyfriend, Bobby (Howard), get some sobering news about the true financial state of Bobby's family. In addition, the poor economy is putting a dent in Kenny's (Bunin) business, prompting Mike (Kaler) to consider other career opportunities. And as Stephanie (Stewart) prepares to start work on a second book, her first draws the attention of a Hollywood producer.
The episodes airing of TBS's My Boys marathon on Saturday, July 24 from 12:30pm-3:30pm are "Welcome Back Kalla Fotter," "Private Eyes," "Decathlon: Part Deux," "Madder of Degrees," "Facebook the Past," and "Spring Training."
My Boys premiered on TBS in November 2006, quickly scoring high ratings and critical acclaim. It ended that year as ad-supported cable's #1 original sitcom among key adult demos, households and viewers. Last year, the show's third season averaged 1.5 million viewers and 1.1 adults 18-49. The season's average delivery of adults 18-34 (784,000) marked an 11% increase over the prior season.

As fans of TBS's comedy series My Boys eagerly await the launch of the fourth season, TBS is offering new and returning viewers a chance to catch up on what happened during the third season. The day before the new season begins, TBS will present a three-hour marathon of the best episodes from last season. The My Boys marathon kicks off Saturday, July 24, at 12:30 p.m. (ET/PT). The fourth season of the series launches Sunday, July 25, with two back-to-back episodes at 10 p.m. (ET/PT).
If you don't know by now, My Boys is a fresh and wry comedy that follows the lives of a Chicago sportswriter and her circle of mostly guy friends. Jordana Spiro stars, along with Kyle Howard, Reid Scott, Michael Bunin, Jamie Kaler and Kellee Stewart. During the fourth season PJ (Spiro) and her boyfriend, Bobby (Howard), get some sobering news about the true financial state of Bobby's family. In addition, the poor economy is putting a dent in Kenny's (Bunin) business, prompting Mike (Kaler) to consider other career opportunities. And as Stephanie (Stewart) prepares to start work on a second book, her first draws the attention of a Hollywood producer.
The episodes airing of TBS's My Boys marathon on Saturday, July 24 from 12:30pm-3:30pm are "Welcome Back Kalla Fotter," "Private Eyes," "Decathlon: Part Deux," "Madder of Degrees," "Facebook the Past," and "Spring Training."
My Boys premiered on TBS in November 2006, quickly scoring high ratings and critical acclaim. It ended that year as ad-supported cable's #1 original sitcom among key adult demos, households and viewers. Last year, the show's third season averaged 1.5 million viewers and 1.1 adults 18-49. The season's average delivery of adults 18-34 (784,000) marked an 11% increase over the prior season.

TV Land August 2010 Has The Nanny Join; ION Television Sees Strong Ratings for 2nd Quarter
August 2010 sees an addition of a new sitcom on TV Land, as The Nanny joins the line-up. The series will be borrowed from sister network Nick at Nite. We will let you know if it will continue on Nick at Nite as well, as soon as we get their August schedule. Perhaps by fall The Nanny will be gone from Nick at Nite as My Wife & Kids joins the schedule? Stay tuned. Anyway, back to TV Land August, The Nanny joins the schedule on Monday, Aug. 2 with a week-long marathon! The flashy girl from Flushing comes to TV Land in a week long star-studded marathon featuring the biggest guest stars and best episodes from the series' run. Whoopi Goldberg, Joan Collins, Billy Ray Cyrus, Celine Dion and even Liz Taylor are just a few of the friends Nanny Fine has coming along for the fun all week-long. Don't miss the craziness of this marathon from Monday to Friday from 6pm-9pm & 11pm-2am and if that's not enough, get even more of The Nanny marathon on the weekend (Saturday 12pm-9pm and Sunday 1pm-10pm). Loving their new home, the women find themselves living under one roof and battling the sassy caretaker of the property they have rented, played by the inimitable Betty White.

Year over year, ION Television's primetime household ratings were up 56%; up 58% among Household Impressions (809,000 vs. 512,000); and up 60% in total viewership, bringing in an average of 1,050,000 total viewers (vs. 657,000 total viewers in 2009). Second quarter 2010 also marked ION Television's most watched primetime night ever (Monday through Sunday, 8:00-11:00 PM) among households, delivering 1,520,000. In addition, ION Television's ratings for key demos were up 57% among Adults 25-54 and up 76% among Adults 18-49. Household impressions were up 56% among Adults 25-54 (448,000 vs. 287,000); and up 76% among Adults 18-49 (391,000 vs. 222,000).
Criminal Minds household rating doubled the time period year over year, and more than doubled the time period in key demos for Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49. Total viewers household impressions doubled year over year, jumping from 522,000 to 1,062,000.
The year over year household rating time period increase for NCIS was an impressive 150%. Ratings for Adults 25-54 were up 119%, while the rating for Adults 18-49 more than doubled; and total viewers were up 140%. The year over year household impressions for NCIS increased an impressive 151% year over year (1,096,000 vs. 437,000).
Ghost Whisperer also grew its time period year over year. The series was up 33% in ratings among households; up 29% for Adults 25-54; and up 53% for Adults 18-49; plus total viewers were up by 35%. The series showed 34% growth among household impressions (598,000 vs. 447,000).
Also, Without a Trace is off to a strong start for ION Television. The series premiered on ION last Monday (July 5). The Thursday, July 8 airing at 8pm did a 1.0/2 HH rating/share, giving ION a tie with The CW on Thursday night in primetime with a 0.9 HH rating average, as NCIS did a 0.8 and 1.0 from 9-11pm. Summer Week 6 Sitcom Ratings; Coming Week Preview
Summer is in session and it's repeats galore mainly for sitcoms. We will be back with our normal weekly report with the first four nights numbers and analysis in the fall, but we still will have our regular how the sitcoms did all summer long, along with a coming week preview! NBC will have Dateline at 7pm followed by the NBC premiere of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and then just what we need, two-hour encores of America's Got Talent from 9-11. CBS has a new 60 Minutes at 7pm followed by Sunday premiere of Big Brother 12 and then crime repeats from 9-11.

- The Simpsons (Fox) - A repeat did only 2.2 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating. Way down from previous week because of the 4th of July.
- The Cleveland Show (Fox) - Just 2.15 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating for a repeat, way down from previous week but it did build from the lead-in in 18-49 ever so slightly.
- Family Guy (Fox) - A repeat did only 2.77 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating...way down from previous week. A repeat at 9:30pm did a bit better with 2.96 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating
- American Dad! (Fox) 2 episodes - A repeat at 7:30pm did just 1.15 million and a 0.5 18-49 rating, down from previous week. The regular 9:30pm airing was preempted.

We have quite a bit of news this week. Sony has announced a 2-disc set for Rules of Engagement - The Complete Third Season. The September 14th release will include all 13 episodes and run 277 minutes. Why does this show never get a full season? Packaging, cost and other specs are available here. Ally McBeal - The Complete Third Season was originally supposed to be released by 20th Century Fox this week (July 13), but that won't be happening and no new date has been announced. Amazon.com is now taking pre-orders for both Ally McBeal - The Complete Fourth Season and Ally McBeal - The Complete Fifth Season. Pricing and packaging art is available here.
20th Century Fox has a press release for The Simpsons - The Complete Thirteen Season. It arrives on in stores on DVD and Blu-ray on August 24 or at Comic-Con in San Diego in July. Shout! Factory has pushed back the release date for The Larry Sanders Show - The Complete Series from September 28th to November 2nd. Suit up for the hilarious How I Met Your Mother - The Complete Fifth Season on September 21st. The bonus features and packaging are quite nice. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has a press release for The Mary Tyler Moore Show - The Complete Seventh Season. It will also include the 'Final Curtain Call'. You don't often see these cast's final curtain call on DVD releases, so it's great they are including it. Starz/Anchor Bay will release Party Down - Season 2 on September 28th. Loretta Devine and Steve Guttenburg are among the guest stars.
Shout! Factory is working on a release of Rhoda - Season 4 for sometime later this year. It will be sold via their online store as part of their Shout! Select program, but you can usually find them on eBay or from Amazon.com marketplace sellers. Lionsgate has provided details and box art for their releases of Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler and Saturday Night Live - The Best of Eddie Murphy. Universal will release Saturday Night Live - Best of '09/'10 on September 21st. The Cleveland Show - The Complete First Season has a release date of September 28th. Rick Hunter is a detective who doesn't take crap from anybody, and he proves that once again in Hunter - The Complete Series. He didn't care how he got the job done, just as long as he got it done and appropriate justice was served in the end. Own all seven seasons for the first time on DVD, including never before released seasons (seasons 4-7), of what was at the time (and even still to this day) one of the grittier detective dramas on TV.
DVD Review: Hunter - The Complete Series

Hunter - The Complete Series (Mill Creek, $99.98) brings all 7 seasons of the 80s NBC series to DVD...including the never before released on DVD last four seasons! This special collection includes all 152 episodes of this 3-time Emmy® nominated series on 28 DVDs! Get ready to reload as L.A. homicide detective Rick Hunter (Fred Dryer) and his partner Dee Dee McCall (Stepfanie Kramer) are back on the job! This series aired on NBC from 1984-1991. Seasons 1-3 were previously released by Anchor Bay and Mill Creek Entertainment re-released seasons 1-2, but now they are releasing them all.
Since we get all 152 episodes on this set, it is hard to cover memorable episodes from each season. However, the first three seasons have already come out on DVD and we have reviews of that, but seasons four through seven never came out on DVD, so we'll focus a bit more on that. Some memorable episodes include the season three two-part episode, "Hot Pursuit," where McCall and an informant are shot after the informant gives her information regarding a prostitution ring being run along truck routes and then Hunter is accused of murder when he travels to Mexico to meet with the pimp. On a season four episode, "Night on Bald Mountain," Hunter and McCall are stuck in an old house in a remote location with the victim's relatives during a storm. In the three-part season four episode, "City of Passion," Hunter and McCall investigate a series of homicides that appear to be committed as part of a Satanic Cult rite. Another three-part episode was done in season five titled "City Under Siege," when a police task force is established to assist in crime control, McCall goes undercover as a teacher when one is murdered. In the emotional season six finale, "Street Wise," McCall leaves the police force after rekindling a romance with an old flame and Hunter investigates a thief who is terrorizing homeless veterans. This was the last episode for Stepfanie Kramer. In the two-part season seven premiere, "Deadly Encounters," two Romanian immigrants are murdered in a robbery and an international killer is after the family of robbers who committed the crime. In the last episode "Little Man With a Big Reputation," a crook choses Captain Devane as his best man when he is being pressured by former jailmates to commit a crime.
Guest stars over the span of seven seasons include George Clooney, Eric Estrada, Jesse Ventura, Dennis Franz, Brian Dennehy, Ed O'Neill, Bruce Davison, Garrett Morris, Jerry Orbach, Lauren Lane, Isaac Hayes, Robert Vaughn, Robert Reed, Richard Kline, Sammy Davis Jr. and hundreds more!
It looks like the music within the episodes has been replaced but the episodes are largely unedited it seems, although some seems suspicious, running below 47:00 (really seems edited are marked in *). Seasons 3-6 have a :30 preview of each episode at the start of each episode. Seasons 5 and 6 actually have a voiceover saying "Next on Hunter" or "Tonight on Hunter" with the show logo. Like the previous Mill Creek sets (Seasons 1 and 2), the menus are very basic, but also nicely done, with the theme song playing on the main menu and options of Play All and Episode Select. The main menu has video clips playing on the top, with the show logo and gun below, then the menu options. When you go to Episode Select, it takes you to a menu that lists all of the episode numbers and titles, where the theme song continues to play. There are no scene selection menus, but chapters are placed appropriately throughout each episode. However, we only get 3 chapter stops per episode once again. Not enough!
As for the packaging, it is still cheap like it was on the individual seasons one and two sets. We have an outer box that holds a double thick keep-case with 28 black paper sleeves inside. This is TERRIBLE and cheap once again! The cover art has a shot of Hunter in sunglasses holding his gun and you see some buildings in the background. The color scheme is blue. The back of the case has basic series information along with a background of Hunter's face. We also have four screenshots of guest stars on the bottom. The disc artwork is the same on each disc with a shot of Hunter and McCall (though season seven doesn't have McCall but has her replacement, Novak), but each season the wording is in different color. Season one's wording is in white, season two's wording is in blue, season three's wording is in purple, season four's wording is in orange, season five's wording is in red, season six's wording is in beige, and season seven's wording is in a shade of blue. Each disc has the episode titles contained on the disc printed on the disc in the seasons's coloring. But again, there are no other episode lists contained within the set.
The video and audio is good. There is nothing to complain about. It "works for me!" It is about as good as it gets for a series that aired from 1984-1991. Obviously, the later seasons look a bit better because they are newer. View the runtimes above and some tidbits on the multiple part episodes. Once again, the first six seasons on this set does have a 30 second preview of the episode, with clips from the episode. I guess season seven didn't have that originally?
One again, there are no special features on the set. Mill Creek could have licensed those bonus features from Anchor Bay's versions of seasons one and two. Original promos would be nice, but I guess the :30 preview of each episode makes up for that. Maybe new interviews or those episodes of the short-lived revival series from 2002? Or even that TV movie from 1995! Something would be nice, even if Mill Creek didn't have to produce it!
There are once again the same problems with this set as with the previous Mill Creek sets, but we finally have the complete series on DVD. We didn't even have to wait for seasons 4-7 to be individually released. For die-hard fans, even though I don't think this set works, you should get it because we get every single episode of this series on DVD. It is too bad the packaging is cheap and the episodes don't have original music (with some episodes for sure edited). I have always liked this show, and I am glad Mill Creek continued the series after Anchor Bay dropped it after three seasons. For that, I'll say this set "works for me" (insert the catchy Hunter theme, preferably from season 5, here)!

We have quite a bit of news this week. Sony has announced a 2-disc set for Rules of Engagement - The Complete Third Season. Ally McBeal - The Complete Third Season was originally supposed to be released by 20th Century Fox this week (July 13), but that won't be happening and no new date has been announced. 20th Century Fox has a press release for The Simpsons - The Complete Thirteen Season. It arrives on in stores on DVD and Blu-ray on August 24 or at Comic-Con in San Diego in July. Shout! Factory has pushed back the release date for The Larry Sanders Show - The Complete Series from September 28th to November 2nd. Suit up for the hilarious How I Met Your Mother - The Complete Fifth Season on September 21st. The bonus features and packaging are quite nice. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has a press release for The Mary Tyler Moore Show - The Complete Seventh Season. It will also include the 'Final Curtain Call'. You don't often see these cast's final curtain call on DVD releases, so it's great they are including it. Starz/Anchor Bay will release Party Down - Season 2 on September 28th. Loretta Devine and Steve Guttenburg are among the guest stars.
Shout! Factory is working on a release of Rhoda - Season 4 for sometime later this year. It will be sold via their online store as part of their Shout! Select program, but you can usually find them on eBay or from Amazon.com marketplace sellers. Lionsgate has provided details and box art for their releases of Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler and Saturday Night Live - The Best of Eddie Murphy. Universal will release Saturday Night Live - Best of '09/'10 on September 21st. The Cleveland Show - The Complete First Season has a release date of September 28th. He didn't care how he got the job done, just as long as he got it done and appropriate justice was served in the end. Own all seven seasons for the first time on DVD, including never before released seasons (seasons 4-7), of what was at the time (and even still to this day) one of the grittier detective dramas on TV.

The video and audio is good. There is nothing to complain about. It "works for me!" It is about as good as it gets for a series that aired from 1984-1991. Obviously, the later seasons look a bit better because they are newer. View the runtimes above and some tidbits on the multiple part episodes. Once again, the first six seasons on this set does have a 30 second preview of the episode, with clips from the episode. I guess season seven didn't have that originally?
One again, there are no special features on the set. Mill Creek could have licensed those bonus features from Anchor Bay's versions of seasons one and two. Original promos would be nice, but I guess the :30 preview of each episode makes up for that. Maybe new interviews or those episodes of the short-lived revival series from 2002? Or even that TV movie from 1995! Something would be nice, even if Mill Creek didn't have to produce it!
There are once again the same problems with this set as with the previous Mill Creek sets, but we finally have the complete series on DVD. We didn't even have to wait for seasons 4-7 to be individually released. For die-hard fans, even though I don't think this set works, you should get it because we get every single episode of this series on DVD. It is too bad the packaging is cheap and the episodes don't have original music (with some episodes for sure edited). I have always liked this show, and I am glad Mill Creek continued the series after Anchor Bay dropped it after three seasons. For that, I'll say this set "works for me" (insert the catchy Hunter theme, preferably from season 5, here)!

Tr3s Rebrands, Adds George Lopez; ABC Fall 2010 Schedule Premiere Dates; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of July 12, 2010)
On Monday (July 12), "MTV Tr3s" will become "Tr3s" and the name "MTV Tr3s" will no longer be used. Tr3s will continue to celebrate the bi-lingual/bi-cultural reality that embraces the three aspects of Latino life in the US - Latin American, American and US Latino.
Tr3s will air sitcoms and Spanish series along with Nickelodeon blocks that teens will enjoy past seasons of Nickelodeon favorites in Spanish. Tr3s' biggest addition will the be the addition of sitcom George Lopez! The series will be borrowed from sister network Nick at Nite, and will air weeknights at 9pm & 9:30pm on Tr3s. Leading into George will be Casados Con Hijos, an adaptation of Married... with Children, at 8pm & 8:30pm. Casados Con Hijos will also air weekdays at 3pm & 3:30pm. Also of note, Comedy Central's Mind of Mencia will air weeknights at 12 midnight, followed by Team Sanchez at 12:30am. Nickelodeon's series will air in Spanish are Blues Clues weekdays at 8am & 8:30am and Wonder Pets weekdays at 9am & 9:30am. SpongeBob SquarePants will air in Spanish on Sunday mornings from 8am-10am.

Premiere dates for Fall Friday drama series Body of Proof and Friday reality series Secret Millionaire will be announced at a later time. As previously announced, Saturday Night Football premieres Saturday, September 4 at 8:00 p.m. ET. ABC launches the 2010-2011 season on Monday, Sept. 20 during premiere week with the season premieres of Dancing with the Stars from 8-10pm and Castle at 10pm. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, a special two-hour performance show of Dancing with the Stars will air from 8-10pm leading into the series premiere of drama Detroit 1-8-7. On Wednesday, Sept. 22, ABC returns their comedies with "Laugh on Wednesday" with the season premiere and a new time for The Middle at 8pm, followed by the series premiere of Better with You (formerly titled Better Together) at 8:30pm, the season premiere of megahit Modern Family is at 9pm, and the season premiere of quirky Cougar Town is at 9:30pm. ABC closes the night with the series premiere of new legal drama The Whole Truth at 10pm. On Thursday, Sept. 23, ABC launches the series My Generation at 8pm, followed by the season premieres of one-two punch Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. The network will start production of 20 new episodes in October 2010 with a launch tentatively scheduled for January 2011. Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White will return as series regulars for all 20 episodes. The first season has an order of 10 episodes, so the second season will double that!
Currently, Hot in Cleveland airs on Wednesday nights at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT) and is the network's first foray into original scripted programming. The show debuted June 16 to critical acclaim and record-breaking ratings. The series premiere was the highest-rated and most-watched show in all of cable that day among Adults 18-49, Adults 25-54, Women 18-49, Women 25-54 and Total Viewers according to The Nielsen Company. To date, the series is averaging a 2.1 rating among Adults 25-54, a 2.7 among Women 25-54, a 1.7 among Adults 18-49 and a 2.1 among Women 18-49. The show is delivering 4.7 million total viewers.
Following the domestic success, Endemol has acquired Hot in Cleveland for global distribution. The show premiered in Canada on July 5, 2010 and quickly became the #1 ranked new import comedy of the year. The premiere telecast delivered a whopping 1.82 million total viewers, which is the U.S. delivery equivalent of 11.8 million viewers. Endemol will launch the series at MIPCOM 2010.

ABC Adds More New Wipeout on Thursday, Shark Tank Now July 29; Our Emmy Nominations Picks
The hilarious obstacle course series Wipeout (which regularly airs Tuesdays at 8pm) has gained more all-new Thursday airings! The original three week plan (June 24, July 1, and July 8) of originals of Wipeout on Thursdays has now been extended by two more weeks! ABC will add two more all-new episodes of the hilarious series on Thursdays, July 15 and 22, leading into solidly performing summer drama Rookie Blue. This means the all-new episode of Shark Tank scheduled for July 15 will now be delayed by two weeks and will air, as of now, on Thursday, July 29 at 8pm. Repeats of Shark Tank will air for a month or so starting Thursday, Aug. 5. Also, ABC has pulled the sixth and final episode of high stakes game show Downfall for Tuesday, July 27, as ABC will air a two-hour repeat of Wipeout: Blind Date from June 1. Downfall is still slated to air the next two weeks (July 13 and 20), as of now.
In other ABC scheduling news, they will air encores of Rookie Blue on Saturday, July 17 and 24 starting at 9pm. Still no word on if Eastwick's final two episodes will be rescheduled (after being pulled out of its July 10 airings) or if canceled stuff like Romantically Challenged, Hank, Better Off Ted will get a chance to burn-off their remaining episodes.

In other ABC scheduling news, they will air encores of Rookie Blue on Saturday, July 17 and 24 starting at 9pm. Still no word on if Eastwick's final two episodes will be rescheduled (after being pulled out of its July 10 airings) or if canceled stuff like Romantically Challenged, Hank, Better Off Ted will get a chance to burn-off their remaining episodes.

I Love Lucy Marathon on Hallmark on July 11; Bio TV July 2010 Has Married with Children Biography and Return of Celeb Ghost Stories
As we noted last month, The Hallmark Channel will add an extra hour of I Love Lucy in the mornings starting next week (Monday, July 12) at 10am (so Lucy will air now 10am-1pm), now they have added a marathon the day before. On Sunday, July 11, 2010, The Hallmark Channel will have an all-day marathon of the classic '50s sitcom from 6am-4am.
The Hallmark Channel has had a consistent schedule since Who's the Boss? joined the line-up on May 17 with really no changes besides minor ones like the one happening on July 12 and the addition of The Partridge Family on weekend mornings. We have the August 2010 schedule and, as of now, the schedule is also the same, so fans should be happy. We will certainly have the fall schedule by the end of the month in our annual cable fall schedules barrage. So stay with us for that!
This month (July 2010) on Biography Channel will see the premiere of Biography: Married... with Children on Tuesday, July 14. A look at the over-the-top and controversial sitcom about a dysfunctional Chicago family that lasted 11 seasons on TV. The crude antics of the family's disgruntled father Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill), his tacky wife Peg (Katey Sagal), his ditzy daughter Kelly (Christina Applegate), and girl-chasing son Bud (David Faustino) delighted some viewers and offended others. The show was a huge departure from the picture-perfect families viewers often saw on television, but even as it ruffled feathers, the show represented a more realistic picture of the everyday problems that Americans were dealing with in the late '80s and '90s. The Biography premieres on July 14 at 10pm and encores at 2am. Surrounding this premiere will be encores of Biography episodes on Woody Harrelson, Ed O'Neill, and Carroll O'Connor.
Also of note, Biography: Rosie O'Donnell premieres on Tuesday, July 21 at 10pm. This premiere will be surrounded by encores of Biography episodes of fellow comedians Robin Williams, Chevy Chase, and Kirstie Alley.
The season premiere of Celebrity Ghost Stories is on Saturday, July 17 at 9pm and will feature stories on Michael Imperioli, Joan Collins, Donna D'Errico, and Corey Feldman. Other episodes for the month will have Tracey Gold, Alice Cooper, Fred Dryer, and Katherine Erbe on Saturday, July 24 and Billy Baldwin, Tracy Nelson, Tempestt Bledsoe, and Eric Balfour on Saturday, July 31.

IFC Acquires Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared; Final 2 Episodes of happy town on ABC.com
It's still the holiday weekend for most people, so we hope you're enjoying this three-day long weekend! Hope you have watched a TV marathon or two. If not, there are plenty of options today!
Continuing to build on its strategy of showcasing "slightly off" comedies that appeal to its young male audience, IFC (Independent Film Channel) announced it has acquired the complete series of Judd Apatow's Emmy®-winning high school comedy Freaks and Geeks (18 episodes) and college spinoff Undeclared (17 episodes) from Paramount Pictures Corporation. These two cult TV short-lived series helped launch the careers of Jay Baruchel, Jenna Fischer, James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel, among other young stars. Freaks and Geeks airs on IFC on Fridays at 11:00pm, et/pt, and encore on Mondays (so tonight!) at 11:00pm and Sundays at 10:00pm. Undeclared will debut on IFC this fall. A previously unaired episode of Undeclared will make its U.S. television debut on IFC.
Freaks and Geeks is set in the 1980s at McKinley High where there are two different groups of teenagers: the Freaks with cool and charismatic Daniel Desario (James Franco) and tomboy Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini, ER), and the Geeks with Lindsay's shy younger brother Sam (John Francis Daley, Bones), gentle Bill Haverchuck (Martin Starr), and self-proclaimed ladies' man Neal Schweiber (Samm Levine). The series was executive produced by Judd Apatow; series writers include Paul Feig (The Office) and series directors include Jake Kasdan. It was produced by Apatow Productions in association with DreamWorks Television and aired for one season on NBC (1999-2000) and also starred Seth Rogen and Jason Segel in supporting roles.
Undeclared paired creator and executive producer Apatow with directors such as Kasdan together again along with stars Seth Rogen and Jason Segel. The series, which was also produced by Apatow Productions in association with DreamWorks Television, aired on Fox for one season (2001-2002). The comedy series follows an eclectic group of college freshmen as they experience their first year at the University of North Eastern California (UNEC). College life is seen through the eyes of the new and improved Steven Karp (Jay Baruchel), who goes from scrawny high school nerd to potentially handsome college guy over the course of one summer. The series also features Jenna Fischer (The Office), Carla Gallo and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy).
As we wait for the final 2 episodes of canceled series Better Off Ted, Romantically Challenged and Eastwick to be scheduled, the final two episodes of ABC's canceled happy town are now available on abc.com. The series was pulled from the Wednesday schedule after its June 16 airing due to low ratings. The two episodes are "Dallas Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and "Blame It On Rio Bravo." These will not air on TV, so it will be your only shot of watching it. I suggest you watch it if you were watching the show, so you have an ending because there is an actual ending to the show.
