Fri-Yay: The Best Sitcom Halloween Episodes; CBS All Access Renews No Activity for 4th Season

by Vincent
This weekend is Halloween, and whether you're spending the weekend participating in Halloween festivities or not, you can make the weekend a little more festive with these highlight sitcom Halloween episodes.
The Simpsons - Treehouse of Horror V (Available on Disney+)
Any Treehouse of Horror installment from the Simpsons' first 10 seasons is a genuine candidate for this list, but the very best is the entry from the show's 6th season, most notable for the show's classic Shining parody. It perfectly balances creepy and funny, and is still, in my mind, the gold standard of a horror episode of a sitcom, animated or not.
Bob's Burgers - Fort Night (Available on Hulu)
Bob's Burgers is another series that has made Halloween a special time of year, and nearly all of its Halloween episodes are delightful. But the very best Halloween episode is probably Season 4's Fort Night, which introduces the character of Millie. Similar to the Simpsons episode listed, Fort Night is actually genuinely creepy, as the childrens' fate is left up to the wildly unstable Millie character. It's also just a great time seeing all of the Belcher kids together in one place.
Parks and Recreation - Halloween Surprise (Available on Hulu and Peacock)
This Parks and Rec episode isn't quite like your typical Halloween episodes, as it centers around Ben proposing to Leslie, but it's nevertheless a sweet and surprising episode that makes great use of the holiday. It's rare to call a Halloween episode "sweet", but this episode definitely gets that honor. And it's no surprise that Parks and Rec would take the darkest holiday of the year and make it heartwarming.
Happy Endings - Spooky Endings (Available on Hulu)
Maybe the all-out funniest episode of the list, Happy Endings' sole Halloween episode is a hysterical laugh riot from start to finish. There is pretty much a joke every other second in this episode, which has a simple premise (the gang goes to a costume party while Jane and Brad house sit in the suburbs) but fills that premise with so many jokes that you'll find yourself endlessly laughing for the entire 22 minutes.
Boy Meets World - And Then There Was Shawn (Available on Disney+)
Technically this isn't a Halloween episode, but it's a horror movie send up that fits in perfectly with the season, as the show pokes fun at slasher films. It's a really funny episode and a fairly early example of a live action sitcom experimenting with its genre and form. You don't typically expect it from TGIF sitcoms, but Boy Meets World did a great job with it.
Community - Epidemiology (Available on Netflix and Hulu)
Community spoofed zombie films with its second season Halloween episode, and if you can get past the fact that parts of this episode is about the school being quarantined due to the outbreak of a "zombie" virus (yes, it hits a little close to home, minus the zombie part), this is an extremely funny parody of horror movies that's one of Community's most imaginative and fun concept episodes.
CBS All Access, ViacomCBS' digital subscription video on-demand and live streaming service, announced the fourth season renewal for its original, half-hour comedy series No Activity. In a departure from previous seasons, the fourth season will feature all the fan favorite No Activity. characters in animated form. This season will find Special Agent Nick Cullen (Patrick Brammall) realizing his dream of joining the FBI, but he will soon discover that being an FBI agent isn’t that special after all. After being assigned to a seemingly dull observation detail, he finds a potential career case in the form of an emerging cult. A large scale operation soon takes aim at the cult but it's unclear which side will break first. Despite the promotion, Cullen's path continues to cross with former partner Judd Toldbeck's (Tim Meadows), who adjusts to life with a new partner of his own.
No Activity's third season found demoted detectives Cullen and Tolbeck back in uniform with a revolving door of quirky new partners and even quirkier criminals, while robots - and Dylan McDermott - tried to take over Janice and Fatima's jobs in dispatch. Season three starred Brammall, Meadows and a stellar guest cast, including Beth Behrs, Joe Keery, Keegan-Michael Key, Sunita Mani, Jason Mantzoukas, Dylan McDermott, Paula Pell, Amy Schumer, Amy Sedaris and J.K. Simmons. No Activity is produced by CBS Studios in association with Funny Or Die, Jungle, and Gary Sanchez Productions, and is based on the Stan original series produced by Jungle. The series is co-developed and executive produced by Brammall and Trent O'Donnell, alongside executive producers Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Joe Farrell, Mike Farah, Joe Hardesty and Jason Burrows. Nina Pedrad, Steve Toltz, and Becca Kinskey serve as co-executive producers. As in previous seasons, O'Donnell will direct all episodes. Flight School Studio serves as the animation studio for the upcoming season.

SitcomsOnline Book Club - There I Go Again: How I Came to Be Mr. Feeny, John Adams, Dr. Craig, KITT, and Many Others by William Daniels; Feud Gets 2nd Season on FX
SitcomsOnline Book Club Review - There I Go Again: How I Came to Be Mr. Feeny, John Adams, Dr. Craig, KITT, and Many Others
by Pavan
William Daniels is an actor and former president of the Screen Actors Guild. He won two Emmy Awards for his role as Dr. Mark Craig in St. Elsewhere and more recently reprised his role as Mr. Feeny in the Disney Channel sitcom Girl Meets World, the sequel series to Boy Meets World. There I Go Again is a celebrity memoir like no other, revealing the life of a man whose acting career has been so rich that millions of Americans know his face even while they might not recognize his name. William Daniels is an enigma -- a rare chameleon who has enjoyed massive success both in Hollywood and on Broadway and been embraced by fans of successive generations. Few of his peers inspire the fervor with which buffs celebrate his most iconic roles, among them George Feeny in Boy Meets World, the voice of KITT in Knight Rider, Dr. Mark Craig in St. Elsewhere, and John Adams in the play and film 1776. Daniels guides readers through some of Hollywood’s most cherished productions, offering recollections of entertainment legends including Lauren Bacall, Warren Beatty, Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Mike Nichols, Jason Robards, Barbra Streisand, and many more. Looking back on his seventy-five-plus-year career, Daniels realizes that although he never had the courage to say "no" to being an actor, he backed into stardom. With his wife, actress Bonnie Bartlett, by his side, he came to realize that he wound up exactly where he was supposed to be: on the screen and stage.
This book by the legendary William Daniels is basically a complete detailed synopsis of his great career and memories. It's an easy 207 page read with 17 thought-out chapters. There are also very rare illustrations in the book, along with acknowledgements. Some of the illustrations are from Mr. Daniels' own collection, so they are nice to see. Mr. Daniels goes into detail about his career, but also shares awesome stories from his time on shows like St. Elsewhere. He starts the book out with a story about going to the Emmy's in 1985 that will hook you to keep on reading. It is a clever way to begin the book indeed. Mr. Daniels also gives some personal insight from his life, such as his life with his mother, father and growing up in Brooklyn. He also goes into details about his decision process to attend Northwestern.
The book goes in a nice chronological order of events and has a good pace. Mr. Daniels also talks about his theater work in New York on off-Broadway. He later talks about one of his first big breaks, the film 1776. He then continues with some of his other roles like KITT on Knight Rider and sitcom fans will most remember him from the role of Mr. Feeny on the popular sitcom Boy Meets World. Without giving anything away, the fifteenth chapter ("Boy Oh Boy") is all about his time on that sitcom. A must read. The book ends with a great epilogue, and Mr. Daniels says it is the end of the book, not for his career, obviously. In the appendix, there is an awesome feature with Lin-Manuel Miranda. Feeny meets Hamilton!
Mr. Daniels is going to be turning 90 later this month. It is hard to believe that. In this book, he shows a vivid memory and lots of details on his life and career. Everybody has seen this man in something over the years, whether it is as Mr. Feeny, Dr. Craig or as the voice of KITT. Mr. Daniels mentions in the book that he is grateful to hear how they feel that Me. Feeny somehow had an influence on their education, but that is the truth as his characters were all so relatable to people. His favorite role was Dr. Craig though from St. Elsewhere, which is understandable since his portrayal was Emmy material (and he won twice). This book is one of the best written books by an actor I've seen. It's fun, informative and it makes you feel like you've known Mr. Daniels as a friend or family member. I truly recommend this book because it is written by such a fine man. Feeny for the win!

ABC Family Fall 2015 Schedule with Last Man Standing; Girl Meets World Tackles Asperger's Syndrome in Upcoming Episode
As we hinted over a month ago, a new addition is joining the ABC Family schedule for fall 2015. And that show is... Last Man Standing! The Tim Allen sitcom will join the line-up on Monday, September 28 and will air weekdays from 12-2pm. The 12pm hour will replace Gilmore Girls, while the 1pm hour replaces an hour of Boy Meets World. One other change will be made to the line-up, at 11am Boy Meets World will air back-to-back replacing Gilmore Girls, which is now off the schedule totally. That answers your question about if ABC Family will continue airing the series when UP launches it this fall. We will have more on the UP TV Fall 2015 schedule soon. Back to ABC Family, as a recap their weekday schedule looks like this: Buffy at 7, Dawson's Creek at 8, an episode of The Middle at 9, before 700 Club programming 'til 11. Boy Meets World at 11, Last Man Standing from 12-2pm, The Middle from 2-4pm, Reba from 4-6pm and movies/originals from 6pm-2am. Last Man Standing stars Tim Allen as Mike Baxter, Nancy Travis as Vanessa Baxter, Molly Ephraim as Mandy Baxter, Kaitlyn Dever as Eve Baxter, Amanda Fuller as Kristin Baxter, Jordan Masterson as Ryan Vogelson, Christoph Sanders as Kyle Anderson, Flynn Morrison as Boyd Baxter, Jonathan Adams as Chuck Larabee and Hector Elizondo as Ed Alzate.
Furthering its commitment to kids and families, Disney Channel will present a special episode of the family comedy series Girl Meets World that delivers both entertainment and information for kids and parents about Asperger's syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder. Three experts consulted on the episode to help deliver an authentic storyline that can spark conversation among kids and their families. They are: Elizabeth Laugeson, Psy.D, The Help Group; child development consultant Arthur Pober, Ed.D.; and Shiela Wagner, M.Ed., retired, Emory Autism Center. In the story, "Girl Meets Farkle," Riley, Maya and Lucas emphasize the beauty of being unique as they rally around their friend Farkle Minkus, who may be on the autism spectrum. Meanwhile, his friendship with another student, Smackle, grows fonder. The episode premieres Friday, September 11 at 8:30pm ET/PT on Disney Channel. Guest starring are Cecilia Balagot ("Isadora Smackle"), Cyrina Fiallo ("Ms. Oben") and Lee Norris ("Stuart Minkus") and Kristanna Loken ("Jennifer Bassett Minkus"), who return to their Boy Meets World roles, now as Farkle's parents.

ABC Family Moves Buffy to Mornings; FXX Schedules Final Season of The League and 2nd Season of You're the Worst
Starting on Monday (July 27) ABC Family will make some last minute schedule changes to its line-up. Buffy the Vampire Slayer will move to 7am replacing That '70s Show Monday-Friday until further notice, but That '70s Show will remain from 8-9am. Boy Meets World will replace The Middle Monday-Friday from 1-2pm, as The Middle replaces Reba Monday-Friday from 3-4pm (so The Middle is now 2-4pm). Why because Reba replaces Buffy the Vampire Slayer Monday-Friday at 5pm. Reba will now air 4-6pm. No reason for the changes, but it looks like Buffy might have underperformed in the ratings at 5pm, so it will move to 7am. Fellow recently added series Dawson's Creek will remain at 12 noon following Gilmore Girls at 11am, as they seem to be doing well together. No shows will be leaving the line-up with these changes, though.
FXX is the destination for comedy this fall with the seventh and final season of its hit comedy series The League and the second season of the acclaimed comedy You're the Worst. Season seven of The League will premiere on FXX on Wednesday, September 9 at 10 PM e/p, immediately followed by the second season of You're the Worst at 10:30 PM e/p. To be a fan of FXX's The League, you don't need to know much about fantasy football, or sports at all. You just need to have friends that you hate. The ensemble comedy follows a group of old friends in a fantasy football league who care very deeply ... about beating each other for bragging rights. You're the Worst is a modern look at love and happiness told through the eyes of two people who haven't been very successful with either. It's the story of Gretchen and Jimmy, fear, heartbreak, romance, sex, food, Los Angeles, Sunday Funday, friendship, and the fact that sometimes the worst people make the best partners.

ABC Family Acquires Dawson's Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of June 1, 2015)
ABC Family has acquired two very popular teen dramas. And the dramas are... Dawson's Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Both shows were staples of The WB in the late 90s and will begin airing on ABC Family in reruns on Monday, June 22, 2015. Dawson's Creek will air at 12pm Monday-Friday following Gilmore Girls, while Buffy the Vampire Slayer will air at 5pm Monday-Friday. Dawson's Creek is replacing one airing of Gilmore Girls and Buffy the Vampire Slayer is replacing an hour of Boy Meets World, but that show will remain from 6-7pm and 12-2am on weeknights. ABC Family is not making any other changes to its line-up besides these two hours. Dawson's Creek has been on cable before like on TBS and The N (now called TeenNick), while Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been on multiple networks recently (like FX, Pivot and Logo).
Dawson's Creek of course aired from 1998-2003 on The WB and starred James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams. Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired on The WB from 1997 to 2001 and then UPN from 2001 to 2003 and among the stars were Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head, David Boreanaz and Seth Green. ABC Family Adds More Boy Meets World; black-ish Cast Celebrates the Oscars
Starting Monday, March 2, 2015, ABC Family will air an additional block of Boy Meets World. The additional airings will air in a 2-hour block from 12am-2am Monday through Friday with four episodes a night. It replaces two airings of the drama Gilmore Girls. This move is not removing any show, though, as Gilmore Girls will continue to air in the daytime at 11am and 12 noon, while Boy Meets World will continue to air in early evening from 5-7pm (sometimes the full two-hour block doesn't air due to original encores). The rest of the ABC Family regular schedule will remain as is, such as That '70s Show from 7-9am, The Middle in the 9am half-hour and a block from 1-3pm, and Reba from 3-5pm. And of course sister network Disney Channel is airing the new revival series Girl Meets World, which is currently in its first season, airing on Friday nights. Keep it right here for continued updates.
The cast of ABC's hit comedy, black-ish, paid a delightful tribute to memorable dance moments from the movies in a promo that aired during last night's telecast of the 87th Oscars(R) on ABC. In the promo, Dre (Anthony Anderson) challenged youngest son, Jack (10-year-old Miles Brown, a real-life professional dancer), to prove he can indeed do any dance from any movie. The youngster happily proved he can duplicate those moves and his family shouted out movie titles to him that included Footloose, West Side Story and Flashdance. Jack didn't disappoint as he strutted his stuff to some of the most beloved movie dance images etched into the public consciousness. The big finish came when Jack was challenged to do "Fred Astaire." He went above and beyond by recreating the famous dance up the wall and onto the ceiling from Royal Wedding, which was shot using the same ground-breaking technique as in the 1951 film classic. black-ish of course airs Wednesdays at 9:30pm on the ABC Television Network.

TV Marathons on Labor Day 2014; SitcomsOnline Book Club - Danielle Fishel's Normally, This Would Be Cause for Concern

SitcomsOnline Book Club Review - Danielle Fishel's Normally, This Would Be Cause for Concern
by Pavan
A warm and witty memoir by Danielle Fishel, the beloved star of the '90s sitcom Boy Meets World and the current follow-up series Girl Meets World. Best known for playing Topanga Lawrence on Boy Meets World, Danielle Fishel was many a tween's first crush and the quintessential girl-next-door for seven years as she joined 10 million viewers in their living rooms every Friday night on ABC from 1993 to 2000. The real Danielle is just as entertaining and down-to-earth as the character she portrayed on her hit show. But even life for a successful actress can be messy, from disastrous auditions to dating mishaps and awkward red carpet moments. Normally, This Would Be Cause for Concern hits shelves on Tuesday, September 9 and is a fun romp through Danielle's own imperfections and mild neuroses. It's a book for anyone who, like Danielle, has ever tripped and fallen down a flight of stairs in a room full of people, had a romantic moment with their significant other that was ruined by horrendous gas, or taken a Halloween photo without realizing there was a huge chunk of chocolate-covered strawberry in their teeth. Here is the real, imperfect Danielle, who knows that a good sense of humor and a positive attitude makes life so much more enjoyable. Even when you've just face-planted in front of Ben Affleck.
While reading this book, you will all realize how "real" Danielle is and you'll like her even more, if that's possible. The book is an easy 213 page read that you'll breeze by in just a few hours. She is entertaining, funny and down-to-earth. And her stories will grasp you and you'll want to just keep on reading. There are 11 chapters and each chapter there is one central theme. There are usually multiple stories per chapter, but each story fits the chapter well. Danielle has laid out the chapters perfectly and it blends well chapter after chapter. In the first chapter, the theme is the audition process. She gives audition stories on Boy Meets World, a horror movie and a soap. For Boy Meets World, us readers will find out that there was another "Topanga" before Danielle was cast but she was let go. I wonder who that was? She also gives us two audition stories from a horror movie and a soap that is comical and eventually she didn't get the parts.
The book shows us that Danielle is very close to her parents and family, especially her mother. Moving on to chapter two, we find out that Danielle is a klutz. She gives us a few stories, one from her childhood and one from her teenage years where she was rescued by Ben Affleck. Wow. You have to read the story. Let's hope Ben is reading this and surprises Danielle again! In the third chapter, we get her experiences with people and how she reacts when they call her "Topanga." She is just awesome. She has taken pictures with fans every time someone has asked, except twice. Once after a funeral and another time bright and early in the morning after she left a boot camp class. But every other time she has done it and is happy to do it. So if you see her, don't be afraid to ask her! In chapter four, she discusses more of her moments with her family. We have some great and interesting stories, like the time she got into a car accident (and Jared Leto asked her if she was OK!) and the time where she bought some bed sheets for $3,000. Hilarious! But the most interesting part of each story was how she deals with it with her parents. She has such an open relationship with them.
In chapter five, we learn that Danielle is a jock. She loves sports, especially football and basketball where she roots for the Cowboys and Lakers. In this chapter, you'll see the father-daughter relationship. In the next chapter, we learn the thought-process of Danielle's decision to go to college at age 27. It's fascinating that she wanted to go to college at age 23, but she was insecure of herself. She waited four more years and she excelled in college. You're "never too old," as the sixth chapter title says. The seventh chapter is quite interesting and I'm sure many people are interested in reading this one. She talks about her boyfriends through the years. In two of the stories, she uses fake names "Stan" and "Mike" since she didn't want to reveal their actual names. She uses a lot of humor in both stories, frankly because it is actually funny! There is also the story of Lance Bass from NSYNC. She goes into detail on how they met and what happened in between before they broke it off. We all know of course, that Lance Bass revealed years later that he is gay. After they broke up, one person close to Danielle wasn't surprised. Find out who and why!
Chapter 8 focuses on how she met her husband, Tim Belusko. They met in late 2008 in college during an English class. Like Danielle's other stories, she goes into detail. Without giving much away, it was mathematics that brought them together! It's not just Danica McKellar that is a sitcom star math whiz! The next chapter details their wedding planning, which is to be held on Oct. 19, 2013. They got engaged in May 2012 and the planning after that for the wedding is detailed here. We get more comical stories, such as a wrong wedding website link and Boy Meets World co-star Ryder Strong having his wedding also the same weekend. Hilarious but true! The chapter also of course talks about the wedding day itself and the honeymoon in Hawaii. The tenth chapter deals with Danielle's love of dogs. She talks about her dog Anna that she bought at age 18 while filming the last season of Boy Meets World. She cared for Anna when she got sick and years later she bought a second dog, Spike, who had a lot of health problems. Danielle is a very caring human being, as you will learn even more in this chapter. And you'll get more funny stories in this chapter, too, like her accidentally giving herself an insulin shot. In the final chapter, we learn of Danielle's dream of becoming a rapper and loving rap music. She also talks about wrapping a gift at Bloomingdales for Maitland Ward's wedding. Get it, rapping and wrapping? Danielle is such a good writer!
Danielle is just the perfect woman. What makes her perfect is that she isn't perfect. She is as real as can be and so relatable. The stories she shares here are so entertaining, interesting and funny. To top it off, it is very well written. Danielle should be a writer and write another book during her hiatus from Girl Meets World, which was picked-up for a second season (yay!). She is that good! I've read a lot of books by TV stars and this is one of the best ones out there. She is honest and isn't afraid of letting people know her faults. I have the urge to eat some pancakes now and do some math problems (because like Danielle, I like math) now. If you read the book, you'll know what I mean by that. I also love that she is so close to her parents and family. That tells us a lot about a person and she didn't suffer from the child star syndrome one bit. This book is a must-read, not only for fans of Danielle Fishel and Boy Meets World/Girl Meets World, but because you'll get to see that "Topanaga" is one H-E-double hockey sticks of a writer! It would be a cause for concern, if you don't pick-up this book.
We'll have details on Danielle's TV/radio appearances for next week (Sept. 8-12) this Friday right here on the blog during our weekly Sitcoms Stars on Talk Shows section. Danielle is also on a book tour from Sept. 8-15 and will be signing your copy in-person at seven different signings in NY (NYC and Long Island), NJ, Philadelphia, Chicago, Mall of America and LA! We urge you to buy a copy and if you're in these areas, go meet her and get it signed!
