Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's a new year, and we've got news about a reboot of Malcolm in the Middle, NBC pulling a series that was borrowed from Peacock, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • We now have an April premiere date for Malcolm in the Middle: Life is Still Unfair. (Variety)
  • The presses have been stopped on The Paper on NBC, as the network has pulled the linear run in favor of reruns of Stumble (but don't worry if you're a fan, the series has already been renewed for a second season on Peacock). (TVLine)
  • Henry Winkler says he isn't interested in retiring, not even at 80. (Deadline)
  • Pluto TV has launched a new FAST channel featuring The X-Files. (Cord Cutters News)
  • Chevy Chase is responding to accusations of him being a racist on the set of Community. (Deadline)
  • MTV went dark on their music-only channels outside of the US just like it started with "Video Killed the Radio Star," but despite what a lot of people are seeing on social media, this doesn't affect any of the US stations (for now anyway). (TheWrap)
  • We're looking back at all of the sitcom stars that we've lost in 2025, including Melanie Watson, who played Kathy on Diff'rent Strokes and died just this past week. (SitcomsOnline)

SitcomsOnline Digest: King of the Hill Renewed for Two More Seasons on Hulu; MTV Cancels Ridiculousness

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's a bit busier this week, with news of a multi-season renewal of a reboot of a popular animated series, the end of a seemingly never-ending MTV show, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • It looks like King of the Hill is proving to be just as successful as (if not more than) the original, as two additional seasons have been ordered on top of the one that has already aired and the one that is coming up (bringing it to four new seasons total for Hulu). (Variety)
  • After 46 seasons (we question how they count seasons, it has only been 14 years, though 14 long years) and 1700 episodes, MTV has canceled Ridiculousness, but don't get too excited yet because there are still unaired episodes and they never said they were dropping reruns. (Variety)
  • John Dickerson, who just recently came to CBS Evening News, is leaving (as are many other CBS News staff), and now there are questions about the future of the operations of CBS News overall. (Variety)
  • If you subscribe to YouTube TV, you've lost your Disney owned channels. (USA Today)
  • June Lockhart, one of the very few remaining stars from the black and white era of television, died this week at age 100. (SitcomsOnline)

  • Meanwhile, Felicity actor Scott Foley thinks the time has passed for a Felicity reboot, because he thinks the cast is too old. (Deadline)
  • NBC has been airing the Winter Olympics since 2002 and the Summer Olympics since 1988, and now, both of those will continue to air on NBC (in whatever form NBC exists in, as TV technology is rapidly evolving and we have no clue where we'll be by then) through 2036. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • For a second year in a row, there will be no MTV TV & Movie Awards, as Viacom seems to be moving away from their awards shows that they've been known for in the past. (Yahoo! News)
  • We mentioned last week that Tracy Morgan has a new upcoming NBC series, and we are getting some casting news for it now. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (MARCH 15 - MARCH 21)

SitcomsOnline Digest: Cable Networks No Longer a Priority for Paramount; Paramount+ Removes Vintage Nickelodeon Series

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! We're in the middle of our second slow news week, but we have some news about cable networks no longer being a priority, more streaming service removals, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • As cable networks have been dying a slow death, it has been long assumed that the networks that have been around since cable began are still strong and a priority, but this week we learned that Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, and BET are no longer a priority for Paramount, and that there is a good chance they'll be sold off. (AV Club)
  • Meanwhile, although they're saying cable is not a priority, Paramount+ has proved that cord cutting works both way, as this week they've removed several vintage Nickelodeon series (including Doug) from the service. (Cord Cutters News)
  • It's a bit peculiar that it took is so long to get the first look at it (maybe an acknowledgment that TV executives don't think as much about broadcast TV anymore?), but we have our first look at Fox's new sitcom Going Dutch, which debuts next week. (SitcomsOnline)
  • Warner Home Video hasn't totally given up on DVD, as they have The Wayans Bros. - The Complete Series coming to DVD in February. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (DECEMBER 28 - JANUARY 3)

  • The Catchy Comedy Binge this weekend (which, we should point out, this is the last weekend that their binge will air on Saturday and Sunday, as they will be Sunday only starting next weekend and Saturday will be regular programming with a few short-lived series mixed in.
  • The new comedy Going Dutch debuts Thursday on Fox.
  • MTV changes their lineup a bit starting Wednesday, with reruns of Friends and The Big Bang Theory, and significantly reduced (but still several hours a day) airings of Ridiculousness.
  • There will be plenty of New Year's marathons, but of course, Twilight Zone is the one that we all think of, and both H&I and Syfy will have those.

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's the slow Independence Day weekend news recap, but we've got more news about Paramount (which will seem like a repeat of a story we've had two times before, because it is, as it has been on-again and off-again) and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • At this point, we'll just call it a rumor that may or may not happen since this history of Paramount reportedly being close to a deal on being sold has been a mess for the past year, but it looks like Skydance Media may actually be on the verge of closing a deal with Paramount (or maybe not). (Reuters)
  • Last week, Paramount decided to remove all videos (including full episodes and clips from The Daily Show) from the websites of all of their cable networks, as well as delete decades worth of MTV News archives, but now, at least the MTV News archives have been restored by the Internet Archive. Black Comedy Revolution Doc to Air on A&E; MTV Movie & TV Awards to Air on Multiple Nets

Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution

A&E Network will premiere the new two-part documentary event Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution exploring the progression of Black comedy and the comedians who have used pointed humor to expose, challenge and ridicule society's injustices and to articulate the Black experience in America. Executive produced by Kevin Hart's HARTBEAT and TIME Studios, the documentary explores Black comedy through a unique lens, tracing the evolution and social awakening of the courageous comedians who dared to push against the constraints of their time and spoke truth to power. Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution is co-directed by Mario Diaz and Jessica Sherif and premieres Wednesday, June 29 at 9pm ET/PT and Thursday, June 30 at 9pm ET/PT on A&E. Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution will also be available on demand and to stream on the A&E app and aetv.com.

The documentary traces the history of Black comedy and its under-appreciated legacy of driving social change across the 20th and 21st centuries. From Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley and Dick Gregory during the civil rights movement, Richard Pryor in the 70s, Eddie Murphy and Whoopi Goldberg in the 80s, to the power of In Living Color and Def Comedy Jam in the 90s, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle in the 2000s and groundbreaking modern-day comedians and creators like Key & Peele, Issa Rae, Amber Ruffin and Tiffany Haddish. Across four hours, Right to Offend explores the rare position these artists and many more hold in our society as both entertainers and truth tellers that speak to audiences in ways no other performers can.

Featuring interviews with some of the greatest comedy minds of all time (including Jimmie Walker, Marsha Warfield and many more) as well as a rich collection of archival material, the two-part event reveals the personal stories and tribulations faced by many Black performers in attaining greater acceptance and opening the doors for a true representation of the Black experience. The documentary also traces how each generation of comedians built upon the foundations created by their predecessors to help evolve and push the boundaries of comedy as a means for social change and fought for a greater definition and understanding of what it means to be Black in America.

Super Bowl Commercial Has Scott Baio; Kenan & Kel Heads to MTV2

Scott Baio

Avocados From Mexico (AFM), the number-one selling avocado brand in the U.S., is back for the Big Game serving football fans an out-of-this-world experience during the first break of game day action on February 7, 2016 on CBS. And it's going to feature a classic sitcom star! The sitcom star is Scott Baio (Happy Days, Charles in Charge). On the heels of multiple major pop-culture integrations from the 89th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade® to a partnership with Sesame Street to promote Health and Wellness, AFM continues its track to join America's conversations in the game day creative. Throughout the spot, the alien guide points enthusiastically to a range of pop-culture phenomena's from a Rubik's cube to a mannequin wearing the infamous blue or gold dress that drove the internet crazy. Featured is actor Scott Baio who was obviously kidnapped and anxious to get to Earth.

After a successful debut in 2015, AFM is taking viewers through a hilarious, spaced out experience. Stationed on an interplanetary museum, the spot opens with a tall, orange alien tour guide leading a bunch of his comrades – of all shapes, sizes and tentacles – through an exhibit about Earth. The tour highlights what the aliens have determined are the most unique Earthly possessions that would amaze beings far and wide. These possessions, determined by the aliens themselves, showcase a number of pop-culture treasure troves, including the always in-season Avocados From Mexico.

Kenan & Kel

Reruns of the hit '90s sitcom Kenan & Kel are now on MTV2! The fun begins late tonight after 2am in a block of episodes. Nickelodeon's first spin-off series, Kenan & Kel, is a buddy comedy starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell from All That. These two friends dauntlessly chase after things most teenagers dream about, but few dare to pursue.

MTV2 Gets Bernie Mac; Netflix Goes Dynamite with New Comedy

The Bernie Mac Show

We have more Viacom wheeling and dealing. The sitcom The Bernie Mac Show is now on MTV2. It was previously seen on Centric and before that on BET a few years back. The Bernie Mac Show also recently started airing on the digital multicast network Bounce TV. Maria Bamford

Netflix has ordered Lady Dynamite, a new original comedy series starring actor and comedian Maria Bamford. The series is based on what she has accepted to be "her life." The occasionally surreal episodes, refracted across multiple periods inspired by the actor/comedian's life, tell the story of a woman who loses - and then finds - her s**t. Pam Brady, Mitch Hurwitz and Maria Bamford are executive producers on the single camera comedy series. Thirteen, 30-minute episodes of the single camera comedy series have been ordered.
