SitcomsOnline Digest: Colin Jost Lands Role in New Peacock Series; Cincinnati Radio Station Gets WKRP Letters

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we have news about a Saturday Night Live cast member getting a series on the side, a new radio station in Cincinnati that is getting the call letters that never existed on a real radio station in that city, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • Colin Jost has mostly been known as the Weekend Update anchor on Saturday Night Live (though he has recently been making appearances at Pete Hegseth), but now he wants to go all-in on acting with a new Peacock drama series that is based upon a true story where he portrays a dentist who is a drug kingpin on the side. (Deadline)
  • Details are light, but a radio station in Cincinnati has acquired the letters WKRP, marking the first time a radio station in that city has legally had those letters (though there was a TV station that used the letters as a nickname that we covered almost two decades ago). (Ultimate Classic Rock)
  • Ashlee Simpsons says she would "definitely return" to Saturday Night Live despite it being where her career-ending lip-syncing scandal occurred in 2004. (Deadline)
  • MeTV Toons acquired and starting airing The Super Mario Bros. Super Show last week, but fans are noticing that something is way off, as they've used some very sloppy AI tools to remaster the episodes. (Engadget)
  • Tubi now has 250 classic episodes of Sesame Street. (SitcomsOnline)
WEEKLY PLANNER (APRIL 4 - APRIL 10)

  • This is the big one many have been waiting for, Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair arrives on Hulu on Friday.
  • The final season of Hacks arrives Thursday on HBO Max.
  • Saturday Night Live returns on NBC tonight, with host Jack Black and musical guest Jack White.
  • The Office is returning to TBS after a seven year hiatus starting Monday night at midnight.
  • We forgot to mention this last week, but if you're interested in other sitcoms from the same era as The Office, E! Entertainment (which has reportedly lost the rights to The Office as it moves to TBS) is now airing Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother (which has been absent on cable for a little while).
  • Antenna TV has a Hazel marathon tomorrow

Hulu Releases First Look at Alice and Steve; Tubi to Stream 250 Sesame Street Episodes

Alice and Steve

Friends become foes in the ultimate wrong-com. Hulu has released the official first look at Alice and Steve, the upcoming outrageously witty comedy from Clerkenwell Films (Baby Reindeer). Starring Jemaine Clement and Nicola Walker, the series will have its world premiere in competition at CANNESERIES 2026 ahead of a summer debut on Hulu, and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers, in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.

Alice is devastated when her best friend Steve starts dating her 26-year-old daughter Izzy. She's going to lose her best friend and her daughter in one fell swoop. Alice tries everything she can to end the relationship. Unfortunately for her, Steve's more than ready for the attack, and what begins as a perfect friendship, devolves into an all-out feud. A hilarious, messy, and complicated exploration of friendship, love, and revenge, Alice and Steve is an anti-romantic comedy that asks the question, how far would you go for love - or revenge? Will Alice forgive Steve? Will Steve and Izzy make a relationship work? Amongst all the questions hanging in the balance, one thing is certain; their lives will never be the same again.

The six-part Hulu Original series stars Nicola Walker (The Split, Unforgotten), Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of The Conchords), Joel Fry (Cruella), and Yali Topol Margalith (The Tattooist of Auschwitz, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder). Tyrese Eaton-Dyce, Marcia Warren, Eilidh Fisher and Ebony Aboagye also star in the ensemble cast.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • If that isn't enough for early 00s Sunday night Fox lineup excitement, we also have the titles for the first ten episodes of the King of the Hill reboot on Hulu. (Hypebeast)

SitcomsOnline Digest: Ally McBeal Sequel in the Works?; More Discovery/Warner Merger Drama

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're hearing even more reasons to hate the Warner Bros/Discovery merger (a total of three stories about shenanigans over there today), the acquisition of The CW by another entity, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • Is an Ally McBeal sequel in the making? Looks like it could be. (Deadline)
  • There were some rumblings of a Reba revival a few weeks ago, but it doesn't look all that likely. (Deadline)
  • We could've seen it coming, but streaming media has taken over cable in terms of overall viewers. (Deadline)
  • We have our first look at Tim Burton's Addams Family. (Deadline)
  • Discovery continues what John Oliver described as "burning down my network for the insurance money," as HBO Max pulls several titles, including classic Sesame Street episodes. (Variety)
  • Here is another one to file in the "what's going on with Warner" file, CNN has cancelled Reliable Sources (and the host will be leaving the network), and the network chairman and CEO is warning employees that more changes will be coming. (Deadline)
  • Meanwhile, Nexstar has acquired The CW, and while we have no clue how they plan to treat it, there is probably some relief that Discovery no longer has any role there. (Variety)
  • Ramy is returning to Hulu late next month. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (AUGUST 20 - AUGUST 26)

  • Decades has a binge of Harry O this weekend.
  • The final season of Kevin Can F**k Himself debuts Monday.

Aidy Bryant Comedy Shrill's Final Season; ABC's Sesame Street: 50 Years of Sunny Days

Shrill

Hulu's Shrill trailer and key art has arrived, ready or not! The final season premieres Friday, May 7, only on Hulu. Season three of Shrill finds Annie (Aidy Bryant) energized by her breakup with dud boyfriend Ryan and her newfound momentum at work. Annie feels like everything is finally falling into place for her, but does she actually know how to get what she wants? The series stars Aidy Bryant, Lolly Adefope, Ian Owens, John Cameron Mitchell, E.R. Fightmaster and Patti Harrison. The series is executive produced by Ali Rushfield, who also serves as showrunner, Aidy Bryant, Lindy West, Rob Klein, Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman, Lorne Michaels and Andrew Singer. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, Broadway Video, and Brownstone Productions. Warner Bros. Television serves as the international distributor.

Sesame Street: 50 Years of Sunny Days

The first lady of the United States Dr. Jill Biden, UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie, CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, John Oliver and Rosie Perez join the incredible lineup of special guests for the two-hour documentary Sesame Street: 50 Years of Sunny Days, a special produced by TIME Studios airing Monday, April 26 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. EDT, on ABC. Stevie Wonder, known for his iconic performances of "123 Sesame Street" and "Superstition" on the beloved series, will perform his re-imagined version of Sesame Street classic "Sunny Days" for the documentary. The special can be viewed the next day on demand and on Hulu.

The documentary, which highlights the more than 50-year impact of this iconic show and the nonprofit behind it, Sesame Workshop, will also include never-before-seen footage of an episode produced in 1992 focusing on the topic of divorce and around the experience of Mr. Snuffleupagus and his family. The special will examine the decision to ultimately not air the episode, marking the only time in the show's history such a decision was made. Sesame Street: 50 Years of Sunny Days reflects upon the efforts that have earned Sesame Street unparalleled respect and qualification around the globe, including addressing their responsibility to social issues that have historically been seen as taboo such as racial injustice. This special, as originally announced by ABC in March, also chronicles the creation and introduction of a Black family of Sesame Street Muppets, Wes and Elijah Walker, a father-and-son duo who are at the heart of Sesame Workshop's new racial justice initiative Coming Together. Previously announced special guests include W. Kamau Bell, Gloria Estefan, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Jackson, John Legend, Lucy Liu, Olivia Munn, Questlove, Chrissy Teigen and Usher.

  • We're surprised it took this long for it to happen, but it looks like the National Lampoon's Vacation film series may be on the verge of becoming a TV series, called The Griswolds, with Johnny Galecki (who actually played Rusty Griswold in Christmas Vacation) as executive producer. (Entertainment Weekly)

  • Last weekend it was Facts of Life, and this weekend, Decades has a binge of Diff'rent Strokes.

Claim to Fame: August is coming up, and it is a month where we usually reflect on the life and career of Lucille Ball, since her birthday is coming up on August 6 (one week from today). Lucille Ball died, of course, almost three decades ago, but her two children, Desi Arnaz, Jr. and Lucie Arnaz, have continued to make sure that the legacy of their mother lives on for decades to come. Lucie Arnaz made her television debut on a few episodes of The Lucy Show before being cast as Kim, Lucy Carter's daughter, in the series Here's Lucy. Her television career was mostly short-lived, but as it turns out, a different direction was much more appropriate for her and has been a place where she has been able to thrive: musical theatre, including Broadway productions. She is still sort of trying to get the hang of Twitter and (as she often admits herself) has a tendency to show up and disappear, but we hope to hear more from her in the future.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Girl Meets World Renewed For Third Season; Mad About You Complete Series Coming From Mill Creek

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! We hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and are enjoying Small Business Saturday, before it is back to the regular routine on Monday! For today, we have news of a new season of Girl Meets World, some Golden Girls themed undergarments, and news of new Mad About You DVDs. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • Reboots, remakes, and spinoffs of older TV series can be hit or miss (and are usually "miss"), but it turns out that Girl Meets World is a hit, at least for the target audience, as it has been renewed for a third season. (TV Guide
  • Underwear is not a frequent topic of discussion around here, but when somebody makes Golden Girls-inspired "granny panties," it becomes of some interest to us. (New York Daily News)
  • Sesame Street is set to debut on HBO on January 16, and it appears that the move to HBO for new episodes (it will still air on PBS at a later date) is bringing a significant amount of retooling to the series. (Zap2it)
  • Grandfathered is considered a toss-up when it comes to whether or not it will return for a second season, but one thing is for sure: if it does, John Stamos won't be holding it back, as he received probation for his DUI. (Deadline)
  • David Canary, who was best known as a soap star (but also appeared in Bonanza and Peyton Place), died this week. (NPR)
  • Cozi has returned with their annual HOLIDOZI themed programming. (SitcomsOnline

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS
  • When Mill Creek announced nearly two years ago that they would be re-releasing several Sony series on DVD, it was believed that they would not be able to release things that had not been previously released. It appears that is now changing, as this week, it was announced that they would be bringing the complete series of Mad About You (which was started by Sony, followed by a trickling of a few more seasons by Shout!, then nothing) to DVD. It is set to arrive sometime in 2016.

DECEMBER 1 HOME MEDIA RELEASES

  • The Bold Ones - The Lawyers (DVD, $59.99): Shout! Factory moves ahead with their release of the third (of four) different series that ran under the title The Bold Ones, also one of the most popular and successful ones.

In other words, it is not so much of a celebrity driven "all about me" Twitter page like usual, but rather about a celebrity giving back in their own way... but it is done in a way that is uniquely Amy Poehler, and doesn't ignore who she is or what she does.

SitcomsOnline Digest: TV Land Removes The Dukes of Hazzard; Melrose Place to Become Unauthorized Story; New Growing Pains and King of the Hill DVD Releases

Happy Independence Day and welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! In true spirit of Independence Day, it seems that current topical controversy and "freedom of speech" issues, no matter which way you look at them, have managed to creep into the TV news during this surprisingly busy news week. Plus, we have less controversial news about new Growing Pains and King of the Hill DVDs. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • There has been some controversy regarding The Dukes of Hazzard in the past few weeks, and TV Land also removed the series this week (there is speculation that it is due to the use of the Confederate flag in the series, though it is important to note that TV Land is known for abrupt schedule changes for virtually any reason), but in the midst of all of this, the series has been topping the DVD sales on amazon.com, to the point where the first season will set you back about $100 and is only available from third party sellers. (New York Post)
  • The Unauthorized Stories franchise at Lifetime will never end. This week, yet another one was announced: Melrose Place. (Jezebel)
  • The Miss USA Pageant has been in limbo since NBC and Univision decided to not air it following lots and lots of controversial news regarding Donald Trump that we won't even get into here, but Reelz has jumped in to rescue it. (Variety)
  • Sesame Street has had an unusual amount of stability when it comes to the the actors who appear in the show, but this week, it was announced that Sonia Manzano, who has played Maria for the past 45 years has retiring and will not be back for next season.. (NPR
  • The famous 30 Rock building in New York, which (of course) had an entire sitcom named after it, is now The Comcast Building. (Vanity Fair)
  • What would the Fourth of July be without marathons everywhere? We've got your entire list. (SitcomsOnline)

One of her first roles ever was on The Facts of Life playing Kelly, a mostly forgotten character who was actually a regular character (and received a billing in the opening credits) during the fifth season. After that, she did a lot of guest work on series, until she found one of her true callings in voice work in 1996 (usually voicing the characters of young boys), starting in Bobby's World.
