SitcomsOnline Digest: An End on the Horizon for WGA Strike?; Hallmark Ready for Christmas

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! We're in the heart of what is the traditional debut of the fall season, but we're still in a holding pattern with the ongoing strikes... but we're finally seeing some progress on the horizon this week for on of them. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • It's starting to look like a resolution may be coming soon to end the WGA strike, but that still won't bring new scripted series to our screens since there is still an ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike that doesn't appear to be quite as close to a resolution. (CNN)
  • It seems that Dancing with the Stars, which was seen to be the type of show that is safe from the strikes, is not so safe after all, and ABC is considering delaying the season premiere. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • We're less than a month away from Hallmark's Christmas programming, and it will include plenty of new movies. (Deadline)
  • Vanna White is going to be sticking around on Wheel of Fortune for at least a few more years. (Deadline)
  • Archer is being made available on FX on-demand, in response to Spectrum dropping FXX but leaving FX on the lineup. (TVLine)
  • Season 34 of The Simpsons will arrive on Disney+ on October 11, just a little after the season 35 premiere on Fox. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (SEPTEMBER 23 - SEPTEMBER 29)

  • Catchy Comedy is having a Gomer Pyle, USMC binge this weekend.
  • Krapopolis, the Fox animated comedy that has been talked about forever, renewed for two more seasons, and had a series premiere delayed by a year, will finally debut on Fox on Sunday... we think.
  • The Price is Right and Let's Make a Deal both return for a new season on Monday, in a new studio.

The suave, confident and devastatingly handsome Sterling Archer may be the world’s greatest spy, but he still has issues with his friends and colleagues who live to undermine and betray one another. Whether set in 1940s Los Angeles, the jungles of South America or the dangerous islands of the South Pacific, Archer, this animated comedy spans time and place to navigate Sterling, Lana, Malory, Cheryl/Carol/Charlotte, Cyril, Pam, Ray and Krieger’s misguided misadventures that range from attempting to save the world from nuclear disaster to selling illegal narcotics to Colombian cartels.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Showtime Looking to Bring Back Two Old Favorites; Disney+ Removing Content

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! We're almost officially to the end of the 22-23 season (although summer is not quite the "all rerun" season it used to be), and with a writer's strike still ongoing, it's not clear when we'll see the next one... but nonetheless, we're hearing what the networks are planning for next season, with major changes coming from The CW, and some cancellations of series elsewhere. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • It feels like 2010 all over again, now that Showtime is looking to bring back both Weeds and Nurse Jackie for new episodes. (Vulture)
  • With the ongoing writer's strike, there is also a looming threat to writers: artificial intelligence writing new material. (Collider)
  • Nothing in permanent on streaming media, and Disney+ is proving that by removing several series and movies. (Deadline)
  • Tooning Out the News and Hell of a Week with Charlamagne the God are both done at Comedy Central. (Deadline)
  • It seems that animated shows last forever, but not Archer, as it will end after season 14. (TVLine)
  • We told you last week that Son of a Critch was coming to The CW. Now we have the full lineup for The CW, and while we don't know what the W stands for in CW, it seems C must stand for "Canadian." (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (MAY 20 - MAY 26)

  • Cheers is the Catchy Comedy binge this weekend.
  • The Fox animated comedies, aside from Family Guy (which already ended the season two weeks ago), have season finales tomorrow night.
  • The CBS Monday night comedies also have their season finale next week.

Archer

FX's Archer, the Emmy Award-winning animated comedy, will return for its 13th season on Wednesday, August 24 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FXX, streaming the next day on Hulu. The latest season of Archer will be followed on Thursday, August 25 with the series premiere of the new animated comedy Little Demon on FXX at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Since FXX expanded its programming line-up last September - adding all seasons of Family Guy to a schedule that includes such all-time classics as King of the Hill, Bob's Burgers, and The Simpsons among others - it has become the go-to network for animated adult comedies, surging nearly +65% in Primetime in P18-49 and vaulting +21 spots - from #36 to #15 - in overall cable channel rankings to now place neck-and-neck with Adult Swim.

Archer is an animated, half-hour comedy that follows Sterling Archer as he navigates the changing landscape of the spy world. This season, Archer and The Agency have been acquired by Fabian Kingsworth and the spy conglomerate known as IIA (International Intelligence Agency). As the gang struggles to find their identity performing odd missions for Fabian, one question arises: will they be able to maintain independence, or will they succumb to their corporate overlords? The series features the voices of H. Jon Benjamin as the world's greatest spy, "Sterling Archer;" Aisha Tyler as the spy with marital troubles, "Lana Kane;" Judy Greer as the crazy office assistant in search of a special skill, "Cheryl/Carol Tunt;" Chris Parnell as the reliable company-man, "Cyril Figgis;" Amber Nash as the enthusiastic offender, "Pam Poovey;" Adam Reed as the opportunist, "Ray Gillette" and Lucky Yates as the experimenter-in-chief, "Algernop Krieger." Season 13 also features the voices of guest stars Kenan Thompson, Alison Pill, Christian Slater, Kayvan Novak and Stephen Tobolowsky, to name a few.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Returns Yet Again; Archer Returning for Lucky Season 13 on FXX

Curb Your Enthusiasm

The Emmy(R) and Golden Globe-winning comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm, starring Larry David, returns for its ten-episode, eleventh season Sunday, October 24 (10:40-11:20 p.m. ET/PT), with new episodes airing subsequent Sundays at 10:30 p.m. ET. Originally debuting on HBO in 2001 and presenting 100 episodes to date, Curb Your Enthusiasm stars Seinfeld co-creator David as an over-the-top version of himself in an unsparing but tongue-in-cheek depiction of his fictionalized life. The series also stars Susie Essman (Broad City), Jeff Garlin (The Goldbergs), Cheryl Hines (Suburgatory), J.B. Smoove (Mapleworth Murders), Ted Danson (The Good Place) and Richard Lewis (Anything But Love). The comedy series continues to prove how seemingly trivial details of one's day-to-day life - a cold cup of coffee, a stained shirt, a missing toothbrush - can precipitate a catastrophic chain of events. To keep the narrative spontaneous, the series is shot without a script and cast members are given scene outlines and improvise lines as they go.

Archer - Season 12

Emmy Award-winning animated comedy Archer has been renewed for a 13th season on FXX. The eight-episode new season will be available in 2022 and, like the current 12th season, premiere on FXX and be available to stream the next day on FX on Hulu. Archer continues its current 12th season tonight (Wednesday, September 29) with the seventh episode, "Colt Express." In it, a mysterious stranger and a scavenger hunt helps Archer and the gang get a jump on their enemies. Written by Alison Zeidman. Season 12 concludes next Wednesday (October 6). Over its long run, Archer has racked up numerous awards, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program and four Critics Choice Awards for Best Animated Series.

Archer is an animated, half-hour comedy that follows Sterling Archer as he navigates the changing landscape of the spy world. In the current season, Archer and gang face a new threat: a spy conglomerate known as IIA (International Intelligence Agency). With a limited number of spy jobs up for grabs, can The Agency compete against the soulless vultures of IIA, or will our mom-and-pop spy agency be the next to get swallowed alive? The series features the voices of H. Jon Benjamin as the (former) world's greatest spy, "Sterling Archer;" Aisha Tyler as the spy with marital problems, "Lana Kane;" Jessica Walter as Archer's mother and spymaster, "Malory Archer;" Judy Greer as the loveably crazy office assistant, "Cheryl/Carol Tunt;" Chris Parnell as the top office spy, "Cyril Figgis;" Amber Nash as the positively offensive go-getter, "Pam Poovey;" Adam Reed as the opportunist, "Ray Gillette" and Lucky Yates as the unscrupulous scientist, "Algernop Krieger."

Family Guy, King of the Hill, The Cleveland Show and Futurama Joining FXX; HBO Max's Ten Year Old Tom Details

Family Guy

FXX cements its status as the go-to cable network for adult animated comedies when the full Family Guy catalog joins the network this week. With the addition of all episodes of past seasons of Family Guy on its schedule, FXX is now the only cable channel that airs such a comprehensive collection of the most popular animated adult comedies of all time, including Archer, Bob Burgers, The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, King of the Hill and The Simpsons (the latter now airing for the first time in a strip daily). In addition to Family Guy, the network is launching King of the Hill and The Cleveland Show this week, while Futurama joins this powerhouse comedy lineup in November 2021.

Family Guy will air weekly Monday-Tuesday (8:00 p.m. - midnight), Thursday (8:00 p.m.-10 p.m.), Saturday (8:00 p.m. - midnight) and Sundays (10:00 p.m.- midnight). The series will also continue to air on Freeform Fridays (4:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m.) and stream exclusively on Hulu. Futurama air dates are pending. Family Guy is an American animated sitcom created by Seth MacFarlane. The series centers on the Griffins, a dysfunctional family consisting of parents Peter Griffin and Lois Griffin; their children Meg Griffin, Chris Griffin, and Stewie Griffin; and their anthropomorphic pet dog Brian Griffin. The show is set in the fictional city of Quahog, Rhode Island, and exhibits much of its humor in the form of cutaway gags that often lampoon American culture.

Ten Year Old Tom

The Max Original Ten Year Old Tom, a bitingly-funny ten episode adult animated comedy series, will debut Thursday, September 30 on HBO Max. The series is created and written by Steve Dildarian (The Life & Times of Tim), who will executive produce with TV animation veteran Nick Weidenfeld (The Boondocks, Rick & Morty). Dildarian plays the lead character Tom alongside a talented cast of actors and comedians including Byron Bowers, Todd Glass, Gillian Jacobs, Edi Patterson and John Malkovich with guest appearances by David Duchovny, Jennifer Coolidge, Natasha Lyonne, Mark Proksch, Tim Robinson, George Wallace and more.

Ten Year Old Tom follows the misadventures of an average kid as he contends with questionable guidance from the well-meaning grownups around him. Being a kid is hard enough for Tom, but when bad influences seem to lurk around every corner – from litigious parents and drug dealing bus drivers to school administrators who want to sleep with his mom – it’s downright impossible. While the adults in Tom’s life certainly mean well, they just can’t manage to lead by example.

Fri-Yay: Remembering Jessica Walter's Excellent Career; Fox's Let's Be Real Special Turns Into Series

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Jessica Walter

by Vincent

Last week, we received the tragic news that Jessica Walter has passed away. Walter was an incredible actress with a long and excellent career in both film and TV. However, to sitcoms fans, she was likely known for two iconic roles: Lucille Bluth in the critically acclaimed and fan beloved comedy Arrested Development, and Mallory Archer in the raunchy, long-running animated hit Archer. Walter worked in both roles even in very recent times (Arrested's final season aired in 2018, and Archer is still running) and her death came as a shock, as even in her later work she still did an excellent job at portraying the characters.

Walter's comic talents might not have been immediately evident to those who knew her from her Play Misty for Me days, but the way she could deliver stone-cold classic lines on both Arrested and Archer was unparalleled. So many Lucille Bluth lines became internet memes for a reason - her blunt, in-your-face delivery made for so many classic moments, and she made the hilariously hatable character of Lucille Bluth an instant classic character, and a big part of Arrested's excellent success. She brought the same energy to her Archer character and once again contributed to that show's continued triumphs. I've been rewatching Arrested Development this week and I'm still in awe of just how great of a comic actress she was. Rest in peace, Jessica Walter - your excellent work will live in for many, many years.

Let's Be Real

Executive-produced by Robert Smigel (Triumph The Insult Comic Dog), Fox's satirical-puppet series, Let's Be Real, returns with four all-new episodes, and all-new puppets, beginning Thursday, April 29 from 8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT) on Fox. Following last fall's comedy special, Let's Be Real returns to Fox this spring with all-new episodes beginning Thursday, April 29 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT). Executive-produced and written by Robert Smigel (Triumph The Insult Comic Dog), the new series will debut new puppets from the worlds of entertainment and politics, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senator Ted Cruz, Kim Kardashian and LeBron James. Previously featured puppets, such as President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald J. Trump, Former Vice President Mike Pence and Kanye West, also will appear, as the satirical comedy series will cover politics and pop culture in 2021 through topical sketches, celebrity cameos and remote pieces.

Fri-Yay: Superstore Series Finale; Remembering Jessica Walter of Arrested Development and Richard Gilliland of Designing Women

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Superstore

by Vincent

Last night, NBC's Superstore came to an end. The show has been one of the best network sitcoms of the past decade, and in my mind, one of the most underrated sitcoms of all-time. It's a hilarious show with an excellent ensemble that tackled working class issues that no other show has even come close to tackling, and it deserves to be mentioned in the same conversation as The Office, Community, 30 Rock, The Good Place or any of the other beloved NBC comedies of modern times. The show is also going out with a great season - even though losing America Ferrera and dealing with the issues of the COVID-19 pandemic don't sound like they would make a great Superstore season, they really have. The way Superstore depicts its employees' dealing with the pandemic has made for some great dark and true-to-life humor, and continued its amazing turn of taking serious issues and making funny, thoughtful TV.

At the time I'm writing this, I haven't watched the show's series finale yet. But in some ways, I'm dreading the show's end, just because Superstore has been such a consistent delight these past six years, and I'm not ready for the show to end just yet. With Superstore leaving, it'll leave a huge hole in the network TV landscape, and I truly hope that the show has a revival on streaming the way The Office and Parks and Recreation did - as many people as possible deserve to watch this truly incredible series. So farewell, Superstore, and thanks for all of the laughs and real moments you've given us.

Fri-Yay: Archer Goes Back to Its Roots for Season 11; Everybody Loves Raymond Cast Reunion Tonight

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Archer

by Vincent

Though the years, Archer has gone through many changes. What started out as an animated spy comedy slowly morphed into many different shows, from a show about dealing cocaine to a noir detective series to a space odyssey, with sometimes little rhyme or reason given for the shifts. More recently, Archer has spent the last several seasons with its lead character in a coma, and having each season be a different hallucination. This year, though, the show has snapped back to normal - and although it isn't as sharp as it was in its first handful of seasons, it's the funniest it's been in years.

I always admired Archer's willingness to abandon its original premise and do whatever it's creator felt like doing. After it's fourth season, which showed some natural signs of decline, the show switched it up to be a Miami Vice-esque crime comedy, and its changed every year since (going back to a spy agency for a season, then to a detective show, then starting the multi-year coma saga). Still, though, some years it felt like Archer was straining to stay interesting and cover genres it didn't really have its heart in. Now that it can settle down and truly address its main characters, it’s gotten much funnier and easier to watch - and it's been a delight during a time when fresh episodes of shows are just tricking in.

Archer

FXX has set the premiere date for the 11th season of Archer, the Emmy Award-winning animated comedy series. Starring: Kiefer Sutherland and Boyd Holbrook, with Natalie Martinez (Secrets & Lies), Tiya Sircar, Brian Geraghty, Genesis Rodriguez (Time After Time), Glenn Howerton (A.P. Bio) and Keilani Arellanes also starring. See the first trailer above. The original series aired on ABC from September 1963 to August 1967.
