SitcomsOnline Digest: Superstore Gets 22 Episode Order; Magnum P.I. Reboot Project in the Works

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're hearing about a full season order for a NBC sitcom (something they haven't done for a sitcom in years), a potential reboot (with a twist) of Magnum P.I. at ABC, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • NBC has given the sophomore sitcom Superstore a full 22 episode season, a number of episodes that no sitcom on NBC has seen since the sixth season of Parks and Recreation in the 2013-2014 season. (Entertainment Weekly)
  • Since everything else is getting a reboot, it was only a matter of time before Magnum P.I. got that treatment, as ABC has a current project in the works (which may or may not actually make it on the air) from John Rogers and Eva Longoria called Magnum, which would feature Thomas Magnum's daughter as the title character (so no iconic mustache). (Deadline)
  • NBC has renewed their summer reality series Better Late Than Never for a second season, and in case you're wondering, Henry Winkler, William Shatner, and the rest will all return too. (Deadline
  • If you're a fan of The Simpsons, you may want to go ahead and request a two week vacation starting Thanksgiving Day, as FXX will be doing their a second run of their Every. Simpsons. Ever. marathon, with this one being a little over one day longer (because, of course, more episodes have aired since the last one). (A.V. Club)
  • The Sherman Hemsley sitcom Amen is coming to the channel Centric soon. (SitcomsOnline)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sony is bringing the first season of Dr. Ken to DVD as a MOD release on October 11, with Dr. Ken - Season One.

Claim to Fame: Once again, we're featuring another star of one of the new sitcoms for this fall, and this week we have Minnie Driver, who plays Maya DiMeo in the ABC sitcom Speechless. Of course, Minnie Driver is not exactly new to acting, as she has been an accomplished movie actress for over two decades (with her most prominent role being in the film Good Will Hunting), but she has dabbled in television some. She appeared on the FX series The Riches in 2007 and 2008, and most recently she appeared in the NBC sitcom About a Boy.
