Final Week of 2012-13 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did

2012-13 Week 35 TV Ratings (final three nights of the season average, Mon-Wed):

Week 35 (May 20-26) Analysis: Week 35 is the final week of the season but it is only the first three nights of the week, so really there is only 34 1/2 weeks during this TV season. For the final three nights of the season, ABC was in first in HH/total viewers and it was a photo finish in adults 18-49, with NBC having the slight edge over ABC. CBS was third in adults 18-49, while Fox was a few tenths behind in fourth. In HH/viewers, ABC got the win over CBS, with NBC above normal and in third, beating Fox. The TV season ended on Wednesday, so we really don't count the rest of the week's ratings since it is summer programming and many repeats. For the May sweep, it was close among the four nets, but ABC took the 18-49 rating crown but all the networks were down from last season except for NBC (which was up just a tenth). As for the previous week, week 34, ABC took home first in adults 18-49 with a 1.95 rating boosted by the great 3.55 18-49 rating for the Billboard Music Awards, compared to a 1.90 for second place Fox. Rounding it out was CBS with a 1.72 and NBC in fourth with a 1.71. Among total viewers, it was of course CBS on top just getting by second place ABC. Fox was third in total viewers, while NBC had to settle for fourth in this as well.

Monday had NBC win the final Monday of the TV season. But first, ABC started with a two-hour Dancing with the Stars performance finals from 8-10pm and did 14.97 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, which is up a good six tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Then ABC had a series preview of the new summer drama Motive at 10 and did 6.52 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, no where near Castle's ratings, but expected. For NBC, they had a two-hour The Voice from 8-10pm that did 10.81 million and a 3.5 18-49 rating, which is down another three tenths in 18-49 from previous week for another Monday season low. At 10pm, NBC aired Revolution and did 5.64 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week, as this series will be on the move to Wednesdays next season and I don't think it will be pretty. CBS was a mix of new and repeats for some reason, with a repeat of 2 Broke Girls starting it off with 4.8 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating. At 8:30pm, the series finale of Rules of Engagement did 6.22 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating. At 9, a special repeat of The Big Bang Theory did 7.46 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating. At 9:30pm, a repeat of Mike & Molly did 7.92 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, as its season finale was pulled last minute due to a tornado related storyline. Not sure when that episode will air now. At 10pm, the season finale of Hawaii Five-0 was next and did 9.0 million and just a 2.0 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. I don't like having repeats in sweeps, makes no sense. Fox aired mainly repeats as well, as a repeat of Raising Hope started it off at 8pm with 1.71 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. At 8:30pm, the series premiere of new comedy The Goodwin Games was next with 1.61 million and just a 0.6 18-49 rating. At 9, a repeat of New Girl did 1.34 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, while a repeat of The Mindy Project did only 1.32 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating. The CW aired a new Oh Sit! at 8 and did 0.82 million and a 0.3 18-49 rating. At 9, another all-new Oh Sit! aired and did 0.62 million and a 0.2 18-49 rating.

On Tuesday, it was NBC getting by ABC by a tenth in 18-49 for the win. On CBS, it was another night of repeats in sweeps (so weird), NCIS: Los Angeles aired at a special time of 8pm and did 7.86 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating. At 9pm, a repeat of NCIS at a special time did 7.81 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating as well. At 10pm, another repeat of NCIS did a last place 7.23 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, yet still up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's finale of Golden Boy. On ABC, at 8pm the special The Bachelor's Funniest Moments did 4.77 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's Wipeout. At 9pm, Dancing with the Stars: The Results two-hour finale did 15.2 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, up nine tenths in 18-49 from previous week when it was an hour. Congrats, Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough! NBC aired a news special on the Oklahoma tornadoes 8 and did 8.15 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, on par with previous week's The Voice recap episode. At 9pm, The Voice was all-new and did 10.18 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. At 10pm, a new Grimm did 4.99 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. NBC will keep this show on Fridays next season. Fox aired a two-hour So You Think You Can Dance and did 4.66 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's season premiere which was just an hour. The CW aired a repeat of The Vampire Diaries at 8 and did 0.6 million and a 0.3 18-49 rating. A repeat of America's Next Top Model followed at 9 and did just 0.53 million and a 0.2 18-49 rating.

Wednesday it was a three way race and CBS had the edge over ABC and Fox. CBS started the night off with comedy repeats, first up was Two and a Half Men at 8 doing 5.17 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's 2 Broke Girls encore. At 8:30pm, a repeat of Mike & Molly did 5.4 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, also up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's 2 Broke Girls encore. Criminal Minds had its season finale from 9-11pm and it did 11.01 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, which was up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's one-hour episode. ABC kicked off the night with the season finale of The Middle doing 7.7 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which is up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week and the same as last season's finale. At 8:30pm, Family Tools was preempted for a Modern Family repeat and it did 5.68 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, four tenths better in 18-49 than previous week's all-new episode of Family Tools, wow. At 9pm, the season finale of Modern Family did the best of the block and the best of the night with 10.01 million and a 3.7 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. The eighth episode of How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) followed at 9:30pm with 6.26 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Still shocked, ABC will not bring it back next season. I think it deserved to return even though it has done about the same as shows in this slot. Perhaps Super Fun Night will be the right choice next fall as it is different and unique. At 10pm, Nashville had its season finale and did 6.02 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Good showing and such a great show that will be Emmy material for this year. No doubt it was going to come back for a second season, as people who kept questioning its return doesn't know anything about TV if they thought that. On Fox, the season premiere of summer staple Masterchef did a solid 5.29 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, while a second episode followed with 5.48 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating, on par with previous week's So You Think You Can Dance in 18-49. Onto NBC a new Dateline started it off at 8pm with 6.2 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, which was down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Law & Order: SVU followed at 9pm with its season finale that did 6.66 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. This is an aging series so I don't know why NBC is leaving it here next fall. At 10pm, Chicago Fire also had its season finale and it did 6.13 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which was down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. This is an up and down show always affected by what is opposite it. Yes, clearly it is a positive for NBC but people give this more props than Nashville in the ratings, yet they both do similar ratings-wise but the latter is more well-produced and brings in more revenue. The CW went the movie route to close the season with an airing of Love Happens doing 1.02 million and a 0.3 18-49 rating.

Starting from Thursday on, the summer season started! So we won't do an analysis, but stay tuned all summer to see how your favorite network sitcoms are doing--repeat or not!

Week 35 How the Sitcoms Did

Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for Week 34 -- May 13-19)

The Simpsons (Fox) 2 episodes - A new episode at 8 did 4.01 million and a 1.87 18-49 rating, which is down about tenth in 18-49 from previous week. The season finale followed at a special time of 8:30pm with 4.52 million and a 2.13 18-49 rating, for a solid finish.
The Cleveland Show (Fox) 2 episodes - A new episode at a special time of 7pm did 2.14 million and a 0.96 18-49 rating, which was up just under two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. The season finale followed at its normal time of 7:30pm and did 2.43 million and a 1.13 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week.
Bob's Burgers (Fox) - preempted.
Family Guy (Fox) 2 episodes - A new showing at 9 did 5.28 million and a 2.61 18-49 rating, which was up two tenths in 18-49 week-to-week. The season finale followed at a special time of 9:30pm and did 5.16 million and a 2.52 18-49 rating, going down from its lead-in...hmm. But good still.
American Dad! (Fox) - preempted.

Monday Sitcoms

How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - preempted.
Raising Hope (Fox) - Summer repeats have started already and a repeat of this comedy did 1.71 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating.
Rules of Engagement (CBS) - The series finale did 6.22 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, which is OK. But CBS doesn't need this series anymore.
The Goodwin Games (Fox) - The series premiere did just 1.61 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, as it is being burned off in the summer it seems.
The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A special repeat at 9 did 7.46 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week's repeat at 8:30.
2 Broke Girls (CBS) - A repeat at a special time of 8pm did 4.8 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating. Weird that it aired at 8 and not 9, but CBS is trying to have it not count in the season ratings obviously.
New Girl (Fox) - A repeat at 9 did just 1.34 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating in its new summer home.
Mike & Molly (CBS) - At 9:30pm, a repeat of this show did 7.92 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating - as it was replaced with a repeat last minute due to a tornado-related storyline. So its season finale still hasn't aired and no idea when it will air now.
The Mindy Project (Fox) - A repeat at 9:30pm did just 1.32 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating.

Wednesday Sitcoms

The Middle (ABC) - The season finale posted 7.7 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which is up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. And on par with last season's finale in 18-49 but more total viewers. Syndication will likely make this show grow more next season.
Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat at 8pm did 5.17 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, which was a tenth in 18-49 better than previous week's comedy encore in this slot.
Family Tools (ABC) - preempted.
Mike & Molly (CBS) - A repeat on a special night at 8:30pm did 5.4 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, also a tenth better in 18-49 than previous week's comedy encore in this time period.
Modern Family (ABC) 2 airings - The season finale at 9 did 10.01 million and a 3.7 18-49 rating, which is the best of the block and for the night and on par in 18-49 with previous week. Good showing, but I thought it would be a bit higher, like a 4.1. A repeat at 8:30pm did solid with 5.68 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating.
How To Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) (ABC) - A new episode at 9:30pm did 6.26 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. It will be all-new through June 26, so you'll have a comedy option on this night on network TV.

Thursday Sitcoms

The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - The first summer repeat of the season at 8pm posted 9.06 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is great but down a tenth in 18-49 from the first one last year.
Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat at 8:30pm did 7.71 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, which is good for a repeat.
Save Me (NBC) 2 episodes - The series premiere at 8pm was off to slow start with just 3.18 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. A second episode followed at 8:30pm with only 2.93 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. NBC always has a sitcom or two they don't air at all or premiere in summer. Weird.
The Office (NBC) - A repeat did just 1.92 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating. I wonder when NBC will stop airing it now that it is over. I'm guessing by early August.
Parks & Recreation (NBC) - A repeat at 9:30pm did 1.79 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, at least building on its lead-in among adults 18-49.

Saturday Sitcoms

None.

Airing tonight (Sunday) are no comedies, as the Fox Animation Domination comedies are preempted by NASCAR Coca-Cola 500.

Summing it up. Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, The Middle, Mike & Molly-Mon were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as Rules of Engagement, How To Live With Your Parents) or just plain terrible (such as Save Me, The Goodwin Games).
