Week 2 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did
Total Viewers: N/A.
Adults 18-49: N/A.
Monday started of week two and it was NBC on top in 18-49 and ABC in total viewers. Starting with ABC, a two-hour Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars did 12.38 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week's season premiere. It has to do better. Competing against The Voice has hurt it. A new episode of Castle followed with a first place 10.35 million but a third place 1.9 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from the previous week's season premiere. For NBC, a two-hour The Voice, which is in week 4, did 12.55 million and a night best 4.6 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. At 10pm, week three of Revolution did well for NBC with 8.32 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, but down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. It's been picked up for a full season. Next up was CBS with its comedies and the slumping Hawaii Five-0. How I Met Your Mother started it off with 8.17 million and a 3.3 18-49 rating, down three tenths from previous week's season premiere. Week two of Partners followed with just 5.76 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Not good for a CBS Monday comedy! Then it was 2 Broke Girls at 9pm doing 9.22 million and a 3.5 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's season premiere. A little concerning. A new Mike & Molly followed with 8.52 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, also down two tenths in 18-49 week-to-week. A new Hawaii Five-0 was next doing a third place 7.95 million and a second place 2.0 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's very disappointing season premiere ratings. Fox was next with week three of Bones doing 6.99 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating at 8pm, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Then the third episode of The Mob Doctor did only 3.46 million and 1.0 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from premiere week. It will likely be pulled VERY soon unless it starts going up, which isn't likely. The CW aired a music festival. Look for season premieres of 90120 and Gossip Girl tomorrow night.
On Tuesday, it was CBS with the victory in both measures for the second straight week. CBS had the always reliable NCIS opening the night off with 18.87 million and a 3.7 18-49 rating, down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week's premiere. Still solid. A new NCIS: Los Angeles was next and did 14.91 million and 3.1 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week's premiere. And finally CBS aired week two of new series Vegas and did 12.11 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, down a concerning five tenths in 18-49 from previous week's premiere. ABC was next with a special Dancing with the Stars All-Stars where we saw defying dances from the all-stars in their previous seasons doing 8.29 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating only. The live Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars: The Results followed with 12.03 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, on par with previous week's two-hour premiere. We sadly said goodbye to Joey Fatone. A new episode of Private Practice followed and did 6.01 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which was down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week's season premiere. Should be better I think soon, as the episode was not that strong and saw a drop in the second half. NBC started off solidly with week 4 of The Voice in the 8pm hour doing 8.48 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, down 1.2 18-49 ratings point from previous week. This episode was a recap episode though. Why a recap already? Makes no sense. New comedy Go On followed with 5.82 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, but it lost to the competing Fox comedy again and down six tenths in 18-49 from previous week thanks to a weaker lead-in. Concerning, but it was picked up for a full season. And week four of The New Normal did 4.5 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which was down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Not good. A new Parenthood at 10pm did 4.45 million and a third place 1.6 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 week-to-week. Will this show call it quits after this season? Fox started it off with the season premiere of Raising Hope at a new time of 8pm doing 3.9 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which wasn't too good. Then week two of Ben & Kate followed doing only 3.22 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, down five tenths in 18-49 from previous week. No matter how you spin it, that's not good news. At 9pm, we had a new New Girl doing 4.99 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, on par with its previous week 18-49 rating. Low total viewers but still a solid 18-49 rating. Week two of the big disappointment The Mindy Project at 9:30pm did 3.68 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down five tenths from the previous week's series premiere. Cannot afford to go down anymore. The CW aired the season premiere of Hart of Dixie at 8pm and did 1.53 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating, which was a decent performance. New series Emily Owens MD launches starting Oct. 16 at 9pm.
Wednesday it was very atypical as the first Presidential Debate aired live from 9-11pm ET/6-8pm PT. That meant we only had one hour of regular series programming. First, CBS started the night off with week three of Survivor: Philippines at 10.38 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Veteran dramas Criminal Minds and CSI were preempted. CBS News Campaign 2012 coverage of the first Presidential Debate aired from 9pm-10:33pm ET and did not count in the ratings but it did 10.58 million and a 3.1 18-49 rating. The analysis from 10:33-11pm ET counted in the ratings and did 7.01 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating. ABC started off with its Comedy Wednesday comedy block with a new episode of The Middle doing 7.72 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, down seven tenths from previous week's one-hour premiere. That is concerning, but the regular line-up did not air at its normal time in all time zones due to the debate. At 8:30pm, The Neighbors moved to its regular timeslot of 8:30pm and did 6.32 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down big from previous week's special premiere at 9:30pm. Let's wait until this Wednesday to see a better picture, as the big 9pm gun was not on this week. Yes, at 9pm, Modern Family was preempted as ABC aired ABC News Your Voice Your Vote 2012 coverage of the first Presidential Debate from 9pm-10:32pm and did not count in the ratings but we can tell you it did 11.25 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating. The analysis from 10:32pm-11pm did 8.86 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, which is solid. The season premiere of Suburgatory will premiere Oct. 17 at 9:30pm. The series premiere of Nashville will air this coming Wednesday at 10pm! Fox aired week four of The X Factor doing 9.71 million and a 3.5 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week's two hour episode. Coverage of the first Presidential Debate followed from 9pm-10:33pm but it didn't count in the ratings. We can tell you it did 6.89 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating. Fox's analysis from 10:33-11pm did count in the ratings as it did 5.68 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating. NBC opened the night with a new Animal Practice, which is awful by the way, dropping to 4.56 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, which is down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. At 8:30pm, the news wasn't good either but a tad better with new comedy Guys with Kids doing only 4.76 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, but it was on par with previous week in 18-49. Law & Order: SVU was preempted and Chicago Fire will premiere this Wednesday, but on this night NBC aired NBC News Decision 2012 coverage of the first Presidential Debate but it didn't count in the ratings. We can tell you it did 11.07 million and a 3.8 18-49 rating. The analysis from 10:33-11pm ET did count in the ratings and did 8.72 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating. The CW had the season premiere of Supernatural at 9pm and did 1.85 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating. Decent start. New series Arrow premieres this Wednesday at 8pm.
Thursday it was CBS with the win for the second straight week, but ABC and Fox had some good options. ABC opened the night with week two of Last Resort doing 8.0 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week's series premiere. Not much of a drop, but needs to do a bit better in 18-49. At 9pm, a new Grey's Anatomy followed with 10.84 million and a 3.8 A18-49 rating, down seven tenths from previous week's big season premiere, but still very strong. Nine seasons and still going strong and still the top drama in 18-49! A new episode of Scandal followed with 6.56 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, down just a tenth from previous week's solid season premiere. This is a growing series and was very consistent last spring. It could be a solid 10pm option this season. CBS opened with a new The Big Bang Theory at 15.18 million and a 4.9 A18-49 rating, down one tenth in 18-49 from previous week's season premiere. With no Modern Family, #1 comedy and TV series in 18-49 and still #1 in total viewers. Week two of Two and a Half Men on a new night and time followed with 12.33 million and a 3.6 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Solid, but no better than Rules of Engagement in the time period. A new episode of Person of Interest followed with 14.58 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, also up one tenth in 18-49 from previous week's season premiere. Quietly has done well since halfway through last season. Week two of new series Elementary followed and did 11.13 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, down a concerning six tenths in 18-49 from previous week's series premiere. Still it won its time period, but it needs to stay here and not go much more down. Fox aired week four of The X Factor and it was nearly identical to the previous week, doing a solid 9.25 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating. A new Glee followed at 9pm and was pretty low with 6.07 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, but up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. NBC was in the familiar fourth place with the final season premiere of 30 Rock doing 3.46 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating only, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's SNL Election Special in the same time period. Not good. A new Up All Night followed and did only 3.13 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, but on par week-to-week. At 9pm, the very tired The Office did just 4.14 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, but managed to go up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Still not good. At 9:30pm, Parks Recreation closed the comedy block with 3.53 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, up three tenths in 18-49 actually from previous week. Good sign, but still low. NBC aired the whytheheckisthisstillinprimetime Rock Center with Brian Williams at 10pm closing the night with only 3.4 million and a 1.0 18-49, up two tenths in 18-49 week-to-week. Waste of a time period. The CW's big gun Vampire Diaries and new series Beauty & the Beast launch this Thursday.
Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, but ABC took the top spot on Friday. ABC won the 8pm hour and the night with week four of Shark Tank, while week two of new series Made In Jersey bombed even more for CBS at 9pm. NBC won 9pm with Grimm over ABC's WWYD, while CBS dropped to second this week at 10pm with Blue Bloods. CBS has a problem at 9pm causing 10pm to go down. Fox had a poor night with a new Fringe trailing NBC and ABC.
Saturday numbers had ABC win the night with Saturday Night Football, just getting by Fox's game. CBS and NBC encores didn't do much.
Tonight are new episodes for ABC Sunday (season premiere of AFV, Once Upon a Time, Revenge and 666 Park Avenue). Look for a solid night and Once will be the top series on the night excluding NFL. NBC should do well with the NFL with Saints and Chargers, which will win them the night and maybe come close to winning the week again. The game won't do as well as previous week, though, so perhaps CBS will take the week. CBS has a new Amazing Race following 60 Minutes, and The Good Wife at 9pm leading into The Mentalist at 10pm. However, CBS has NFL overrun tonight so look for delays. Due to NFL overrun, they will be second tonight. Fox has its animation block from 7-10pm, but no NFL overrun so likely a fourth place finish.
As for the week (week 2), CBS will win in HH, viewers but 18-49 is anyone's game depending on tonight. Can CBS hang on? Or will NBC make a run thanks to NFL tonight? For sure they will be first or second in 18-49. ABC will finish second likely in HH/viewers, followed by NBC and Fox. In 18-49, Fox will likely be third, then ABC. As for the coming week (week 3), look for new series premiere on Wednesday with Nashville on ABC at 10pm and Chicago Fire on NBC at 10. The CW has many season premieres and series premieres like Arrow and Beauty & the Beast. Thursday from 9-11pm ET we have a Vice Presidential Debate that will preempt primetime for two-hours, as the 8pm ET hour will still have new programming...so make a note of that again! Last Resort is still on this Thursday at 8--watch! We saw episode three and it is amazing! You've been warned!
- The Simpsons (Fox) - The season premiere did 8.08 million and a 3.8 18-49 rating following NFL action (except the west coast). Very good but the lead-in sure helped. Without it would have been over a point lower in 18-49.
- The Cleveland Show (Fox) - Season premiere is tonight.
- Bob's Burgers (Fox) - The season premiere did 5.46 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, down a lot from its lead-in. Could be lower tonight without direct NFL impact.
- Family Guy (Fox) - The season premiere aired at 9 and did 6.55 million and a 3.3 18-49 rating, which is solid but certainly below normal for this series. Could do better tonight, or perhaps not since there is no national NFL late game leading into prime.
- American Dad! (Fox) - The season premiere 5.25 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, the lowest of the block. But it did have better retention than Bob's Burgers.
- How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - Week two did 8.17 million and a 3.3 18-49 rating, which is down three tenths in 18-49 from the previous week. Looks like last season's big jump will not happen this season.
- Partners (CBS) - Week two of this freshman sitcom did just 5.76 million a 2.1 18-49 rating, also down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. If it goes down tomorrow, CBS should be very concerned. Especially if it goes below a 2.0 18-49 rating.
- 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - 9.22 million and a 3.5 18-49 rating is solid but down two tenths in 18-49 from its season premiere the previous week. Was it too early for this series to be moved to an anchor spot? I really think it was.
- Mike & Molly (CBS) - The second episode of the season did 8.52 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, also down two tenths in 18-49 from the previous week. Look for CBS to be preempted in Houston tomorrow for the NFL Texans/Jets game, so that could really hamper CBS Monday tomorrow night.
- Raising Hope (Fox) - The season premiere at a new time of 8pm did only 3.9 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating. Not good but not terrible.
- Ben & Kate (Fox) - Week two of this new comedy did 3.22 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, down five tenths in 18-49 from its premiere the previous week. Very bad news.
- New Girl (Fox) - A new episode did 4.99 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, on par with its season premiere the previous week and easily getting by NBC's competing comedy in 18-49. This is one of the more younger skewing series on the top four networks. Low total viewers but solid 18-49 rating.
- Go On (NBC) - Week four (well five if you count the special premiere during the Olympics) of this comedy on NBC did 5.82 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, down a concerning six tenths in 18-49 from the previous week. Not good and continues to go down each week after a great start. Good news is that NBC already picked-up a full season. Will they regret it?
- The Mindy Project (Fox) - Week two for this new comedy did just 3.68 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down a half a point in 18-49 and a million total viewers from its premiere the previous week. Very very disappointing for the comedy that was pretty much a given to do well out of New Girl.
- The New Normal (NBC) - Week four of this comedy lost to the competing new Fox comedy, as this show did 4.5 million and only a 1.7 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week.
- The Middle (ABC) - Week two did 7.72 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, down seven tenths from previous week's one-hour season premiere. Strange, but the night was messed up due to the first Presidential Debate. Look for it to go up this week.
- Animal Practice (NBC) - Week two in the timeslot did only 4.56 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from the time period debut the previous week. Joanna Garcia-Swisher deserves a better show.
- Guys with Kids (NBC) - Week two of this comedy in the timeslot did only 4.76 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, but it was on par with previous week.
- Modern Family (ABC) - preempted, and will have not one but two all-new episodes this Wednesday starting at 9pm! Big numbers to come.
- The Neighbors (ABC) - Week two of this series moved to its regular time of 8:30pm and did 6.32 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down 1.3 18-49 rating points from the previous week's special premiere. Expected, but it didn't have the Modern Family lead-out as the debate aired at 9. More telling will be this week and I think it will do better than a 1.9 18-49 rating.
- Suburgatory (ABC) - Season premiere is Oct. 17 at a new time of 9:30!
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - Week two did 15.18 million and a 4.9 18-49 rating, down just a tenth in 18-49 from the previous week. With no Modern Family in week two, it will be the #1 TV series for the week.
- Two and a Half Men (CBS) - Week two of this aging comedy did 12.33 million and a 3.6 18-49 rating, but it was up a tenth in 18-49 actually from the previous week. Still, that's no better than what CBS was doing with series like Rules.
- 30 Rock (NBC) - The season premiere aired at 8pm and did just 3.46 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating. Good thing it is ending this season.
- Up All Night (NBC) - A new episode did only 3.13 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, on par with the previous week. Not good though!
- The Office (NBC) - A new episode of this series did 4.14 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, up just a tenth in 18-49 from previous week, as no one cares anyone about this show. It has ended at the right time.
- Parks & Recreation (NBC) - A new episode did 3.53 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, but it was up three tenths in 18-49 from the previous week. The best performer I think of this NBC block this week.
- None.
- None
Summing it up. The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, How I Met Your Mother, Mike & Molly, Two and a Half Men, New Girl were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as The Middle, Go On, The Office) or just plain old terrible (such as Animal Practice, Ben & Kate, Up All Night, 30 Rock).
