Remembering Kirstie Alley of Cheers and More; Final Season of The Flash in February on The CW
Emmy-winning actress Kirstie Alley, who starred as Rebecca Howe on Cheers and as Veronica "Ronnie" Chase on Veronica's Closet, has died. She died from colon cancer at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, on December 5. Ms. Alley was 71.
Alley's first appearance was an uncredited role as Princess Carna's (Barbara Rhoades) second handmaiden in a 1978 episode of the science fiction sitcom Quark. She appeared as a contestant in three episodes of Match Game in 1979 and one episode of Password Plus in 1980. In 1983, she guest starred as Marion Stevens in an episode The Love Boat. She starred as Casey Collins 1983-1984 ABC espionage series Masquerade. In 1985, she starred as Virgilia Hazard in the ABC miniseries North and South.
She starred as Rebecca Howe on the NBC sitcom Cheers from 1987 to 1993. She joined the series in the sixth season (1987-1988) after Shelley Long (Diane Chambers) left after the fifth season (1986-1987). Rebecca Howe is the manager of the bar for the corporation that bought Cheers from Sam after his on-off relationship with Diane ended. After receiving two Emmy nominations for her work in 1988 and 1990, she won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1991. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical in 1991. She guest starred as Rebecca Howe in a 1993 episode of Wings. The Cheers cast from seasons 6-11 included Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt, John Ratzenberger, Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson and Bebe Neuwirth.
Alley starred as Veronica "Ronnie" Chase on the 1997-2000 NBC sitcom Veronica's Closet. She also served as an executive producer for the series, which was created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman. Veronica "Ronnie" Chase is the owner of Veronica's Closet, a company that sells lingerie and other bedroom accessories. Alley received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1998. The series, which aired for three seasons and 66 episodes, also starred Kathy Najimy, Wallace Langham, Dan Cortese, Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, Cynthia Mann (season 1), Robert Prosky (season 1), Ron Silver (season 2) and Lorri Bagley (season 3).
She played a fictionalized version of herself in the short-lived 2005 Showtime comedy Fat Actress. The series was created by Alley and Brenda Hampton. Alley also worked as an executive producer and writer. The cast included Rachael Harris, Bryan Callen, Michael McDonald (recurring) and Kelly Preston (recurring).
Alley starred as Madison "Maddie" Banks on the 2013-2014 TV Land sitcom Kirstie. Kirstie tells the story of Tony Award-winning actress Madison "Maddie" Banks as she navigates through life after Arlo (Eric Petersen), the son whom she gave up at birth, reappears. Alley served as one of the executive producers. She appeared as Maddie Banks in two crossover episodes with Hot in Cleveland in 2013 and 2014. Kirstie's cast included her Cheers co-star Rhea Perlman as Thelma Katz, Maddie's personal secretary, and Seinfeld's Michael Richards as Frank Baxter, Maddie's driver.
Some of her sitcom guest appearances included Flesh 'n' Blood, Ink, Dharma & Greg (uncredited), The King of Queens, The Middle, Flaked and The Goldbergs. She received an Emmy nomination in 1997 for her role as Rose Marie Clericuzio in the crime drama series The Last Don. She starred as Nurse Ingrid Hoffel in the second season of the Fox horror comedy Scream Queens.
Alley appeared on and executive produced the 2010 A&E reality series Kirstie's Big Life. The series chronicles her life as she works to lose weight, launch a weight loss program and be a single mother. She was a contestant on the 12th season of Dancing with the Stars (2011–2012), finishing in second place. In 2018, she was a contestant on the 22nd series of the British reality show Celebrity Big Brother, in which she finished as runner-up. In 2022, she appeared as "Baby Mammoth" of Team Cuddly on The Masked Singer.
She won her second Emmy Award in 1994 for her role as Sally Goodson in the the 1994 CBS television film David's Mother. Some of her other television film credits included A Bunny's Tale (1985), Prince of Bel Air (1986), Infidelity (1987), Suddenly (1996), Toothless (1997), Salem Witch Trials (2003), While I Was Gone (2004), Write & Wrong (2007) and Baby Sellers (2013).
Alley made her film debut in 1982 in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, playing the Vulcan Starfleet officer Lieutenant Saavik. She starred as Mollie Jensen with John Travolta in Look Who's Talking (1989), Look Who's Talking Too (1990) and Look Who's Talking Now (1993). Some of her other film credits included One More Chance (1983), Blind Date (1984), Runaway (1984), Summer School (1987), Loverboy (1989), Madhouse (1990), Sibling Rivalry (1990), Village of the Damned (1995), It Takes Two (1995), Deconstructing Harry (1997), For Richer or Poorer (1997) and Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999).
Survivors include her two children, William True Stevenson and Lillie Price Stevenson, and three grandchildren.
Ms. Alley was a funny and talented actress. She was a great addition to the Cheers cast. She made everything she appeared in much better. We thank her for the many laughs and the entertainment that she brough us during her career. She will be deeply missed.

TV Land Orders 4th Season of The Soul Man; NBC to Bring Back Welcome to Sweden
It's a day of happy news for two sitcoms. TV Land has renewed its sitcom The Soul Man, starring Cedric "The Entertainer" and Niecy Nash, for a fourth season. The series, which also co-stars Wesley Jonathan, has been picked up for 12 episodes. Last season, The Soul Man premiered with a live episode and saw great guest stars like Brandy, Martin Lawrence, B.o.B., David Alan Grier, Deion Sanders, Yvette Nicole Brown, Cedric Yarbrough and TV Land's own Betty White. Season four will premiere in 2015. The Soul Man follows R&B superstar-turned-minister Reverend Boyce "The Voice" Ballentine (Cedric) after he relocated from Las Vegas to St. Louis with his wife Lolli (Nash). While learning to adjust to their new humble life, they have plenty of obstacles in their way, including Boyce's brother Stamps (Jonathan), who only just moved out at the end of last season. Over the last three seasons, The Soul Man averaged a remarkable 3.19 rating among African-American Women 25-54 and a 2.65 rating with African-American Adults 25-54, posting triple digit gains over channel prime average (Nielsen, L+7, 6/20/12-5/14/14, 30 Telecasts). The series has also averaged 1.2 million viewers series to date, up +59% compared to channel prime average. It wasn't good news though for TV Land's freshman sitcom Kirstie, starring Kirstie Alley, as the network did not order a second season. The jury is still out on current freshman comedy Jennifer Falls starring Jaime Pressly.
Critically acclaimed Thursday night comedy Welcome to Sweden from Entertainment One Television has been renewed for a 10-episode second season. No premiere date has been determined, but it will likely be next summer on NBC. The series was created by Greg Poehler, with events based on his real life. The series stars Greg Poehler, Josephine Bornebusch, Lena Olin, Claes Mansson, Christopher Wagelin, and Per Svensson. This Swedish series airs on NBC in the U.S. and was picked up actually for a second season back in April on Sweden's TV4. So now America is on board, too! In the series, Bruce Evans (Greg Poehler) and Emma Wiik (Josephine Bornebusch) seem to be the perfect couple, so when she makes the life-changing decision to move back to her native Stockholm to accept a prestigious banking position after a year together, she is surprised and thrilled that he agrees to move with her. Moving halfway around the world with a new love is a huge step and Bruce, with no job, friends or real clue about what he is getting himself into, is quick to face the many unique challenges and culture clashes that living in a foreign land presents - most notably, how to win over Emma's strange and very Swedish family.

- Summer premieres for a sitcom are usually seen as a dumping ground, and even Undateable executive producer Bill Lawrence acknowledged that before the show premiered. However, it was renewed. (Deadline)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS
- Shout! Factory dropped a huge surprise last week, when they announced that they would be releasing The Facts of Life - The Complete Series on DVD sometime next year.
- It seems like we can't go more than one week without an update on new special features for The Wonder Years - The Complete Series, and this week, TVShowsOnDVD.com announced a few more.
- Mill Creek has a pair of complete series releases in store for November 11, including Highway to Heaven - The Complete Series and Starsky & Hutch - The Complete Series.
- For those who aren't necessarily interested in making the big investment into one of the Batman complete series releases, Warner Home Video will also be releasing Batman - The Complete First Season on November 11.
- We mentioned in the past that MPI has plans to right some of the wrongs done with The Donna Reed Show on DVD, and part of the plan appears to be to re-release the first three seasons on DVD, beginning with The Donna Reed Show - Season One on September 30.
AUGUST 5 HOME MEDIA RELEASES
- Dennis the Menace - Lights! Camera! Menace! (DVD, $12.98): The animated version of the comic book page character comes to DVD once again with 32 "new" episodes, almost all of which available on DVD for the very first time.
- Mad About You - Seasons 1 and 2 (DVD, $14.98): A Mill Creek re-release of a set previously released by Sony (also available in configurations of just the first season or second season).
- The Nanny - Seasons 1 and 2 (DVD, $14.98): Another Mill Creek re-release of a set previously released by Sony (also available in configurations of just the first season or second season).
- Perry Mason Movie Collection - Volume 3 (DVD, $59.99): This six movie collection brings more the 80s and 90s movies based upon the classic series to DVD, leaving only twelve more of the movies unreleased (eight of which starred Raymond Burr).

Claim to Fame: You may not know his name, but you know his work. You may not know his first work, though, which was as a writer on the short-lived Head of the Class spinoff, Billy (it never dawned on me that the series even had a spinoff), but shortly thereafter, he went on to write for series such as Boy Meets World, Friends, and The Nanny. But it was in 1996 where he really made a name for himself, when he created the series Spin City. He followed up on that success with the series Scrubs. His most recent work has been as co-creator of Cougar Town, and executive producer of Undateable, which was recently renewed for a second season.

Kirstie Alley has had her fair share of sitcom roles over the years, which of course, makes her a natural for her latest role as star of her own TV Land sitcom, Kirstie. The latest entry to TV Land's slate of original sitcoms follows Maddie Banks (Alley) as she is going through her everyday life as an award-winning stage actress, living life with her personal assistant Thelma (Rhea Perlman) and limo driver Frank (Michael Richards)... that is, until an unexpected guest shows up outside of the stage one night, her biological 26-year-old son Arlo, who was given up for adoption after birth. Now, he's back in her life, and she is discovering what it is like to be a mother for the first time in her life.

Kirstie Alley (Maddie Banks) got her start in television on game shows, not as a "celebrity" contestant, but just as an ordinary woman, appearing in game shows such as Password and Match Game, but it wasn't long before she moved into actual celebrity status with films such as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Summer School, and Look Who's Talking. In 1987, she landed the role of Rebecca Howe on Cheers, for which she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in 1991. She later appeared in the NBC series Veronica's Closet and Showtime series Fat Actress.
Rhea Pearlman (Thelma Katz) began her acting career in the 1970s, and first came known to TV viewers in 1979 with her guest appearances on Taxi, playing Zena Sherman. She became much better known in 1982 playing Carla Tortelli on Cheers, for which she won numerous awards. In 1996, she had her own short-lived sitcom, Pearl. She also appeared in several films in the 1990s, including Carpool and Matilda.
Michael Richards (Frank Baxter) is a self-described retired standup comedian who is best known for his role as Cosmo Kramer on the sitcom Seinfeld. He first came to fame for TV audiences in the ABC late-night comedy series Fridays, and guest-starred in several series throughout the 1980s including Night Court, St. Elsewhere, Cheers, Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, and others. Following Seinfeld, he had a short-lived series, The Michael Richards Show, but has mostly been away from TV roles until now.
Eric Petersen (Arlo Barth) is a relative newcomer to acting, having made his first TV appearance as Santa Claus in As the World Turns. He has also had guest appearances on Law and Order, GCB, and Modern Family.
Pilot Plot:
"Pilot" – airs Wednesday, December 4th, 2013 at 10PM ET/PT
Maddie Banks has the perfect life as a wealthy stage actress without a care in the world, until she steps outside the theater one night and is approached by a stranger. Except that stranger isn't as strange as she may think. In fact, he is her biological son Arlo, whom she gave up for adoption after birth. As it turns out, Arlo's adoptive parents recently died and he wants somebody to turn to, so he turns to his biological mom for the first time in his life.
Unfortunately, this isn't exactly convenient for Maddie. To begin with, he is 26 and she chooses to be in her 30s (not that she really is, of course). While she is a very classy woman (in some respects), he works at a doughnut shop in New Jersey. In the pilot, we go through some of the trials and tribulations of newly reunited mother and son figuring out how to (or even if they want to) reconnect.
"Arlo Moves In" – airs Wednesday, December 4th, 2013 at 10:30PM ET/PT
In the second episode of the series, Maddie ultimately opens the door to her new son, and in fact has him move in with her. Everything appears to be going just fine, until she finds a voice-recorded birthday card given to him by his adoptive mother... and accidentally destroys her voice on it. Desperate to do anything to make everything better, she recruits her acting understudy (guest star Kristin Chenoweth) to help her fix the problem, but even with one problem fixed, it seems that the door just keeps opening up to more problems in the mother-son dynamic.
"Arlo's Birthday" – airs Wednesday, December 11th, 2013 at 10PM ET/PT
Maddie is invited to Arlo's birthday party at a bar, and when he gets on stage to do a little karaoke, her motherly instincts tell her that she has a star on her hands. And with her connections, she is more than happy to match her son up with a record producer. But does he really have what it takes to be a star?
"Little Bummer Boy" – airs Wednesday, December 18th, 2013 at 10PM ET/PT
In this special Christmas episode of the series, Arlo decides to give Maddie a special gift for Christmas: a visit from her mother (guest star Cloris Leachman). It is too bad, however, that Maddie and her mother don't get along at all. Matters are made even worse by the fact that Arlo and grandmother hit it off rather well. How will anybody manage to have a merry Christmas after the dust settles in this mess?
Analysis:
I was rather pleased with the first few episodes of this series, particularly the first two episodes. One thing that I find interesting about TV Land sitcoms is that they tend to have ideas that could have been tried and true hits in the '80s and '90s, and make them work in the modern era. Too many of the sitcoms of today are too formulaic, and about somebody being in or wanting to be in some sort of romantic relationship. Granted, this is sort of a relationship as well, but it is about a mother bonding with her adult son for the first time in both of their lives. It is a premise that really hasn't been beat to death in sitcoms (or even at all, as far as I can remember).
The first two episodes were particularly great. They bring us the introduction between Maddie and Arlo, and show their first attempts to make that mother-son bond... and nothing goes quite as planned. There are many great comedy moments in these episodes, beginning the very second at which Arlo confronts Maddie, to Arlo becoming acquainted with Maddie's assistants, and of course, the doubt and skepticism that Frank seems to have about Arlo in "Arlo Moves In." The dynamics between Maddie and Arlo is a bit of an Odd Couple type of dynamic, but in a much different way.
"Arlo's Birthday" was probably the weakest of the four episodes, but it still had some great moments. In particular, it showed Maddie's first (good) efforts to be a good mother to Arlo, but the problem is that she was like most mothers, thinking that her son is better than he really is. The plot wore a bit thin, though.
It was particularly great seeing the appearance of Cloris Leachman in "Little Bummer Boy." As usual, she played her typical "bitter old woman" role (although she is much more senile in here than she is in Raising Hope), and I felt that her character added a lot to this particular episode. It seems to be up in the air as to whether or not she'll be back, but it would be nice to see her as a regular character on the show (she is currently appearing as a regular on Raising Hope, but the future of that series is constantly in question, particularly this season). She proves in the episode that she does want the best for the relationship between her daughter and grandson, showing a side of herself that isn't immediately obvious.
There are great moments in the series, including some moments that will truly make you laugh. One thing that I found a bit interesting in watching these is how the characters played by the actors on the series seem to carry over a lot of their old characters from their hit series with them. Sometimes this works, and other times it doesn't... but I really feel like this is one show where it really does work.
It seems that TV Land has something good going for it, and I hope to see this one succeed. The great thing about these cable sitcoms is that they're almost always given a fair chance to succeed if things don't work out at first, but this series has an all-star cast (well, that is of big stars from past NBC hit series) and a premise that is legitimately fun to watch. I really hope to see this series go beyond the initial order of episodes, and I feel that given that it is airing on TV Land, it has a reasonable chance of doing just that. I would like to see more Cloris Leachman on here, and I somewhat feel like the cast should be expanded a bit, but I think that there are plenty of opportunities for this series to blossom throughout the season and into future seasons should it prove to be a hit with the fans.

NBC has ordered a full 22-episode second season of freshman drama The Blacklist, broadcast television's No. 1 drama in the 18-49 demo fresh off of last night's substantial showing and timeslot win. The series is the fall season's breakout hit in both same day and record-setting live-plus-7 viewing. The Nov. 4 episode of The Blacklist delivered the largest total-viewer increase from live-plus same-day viewing to live-plus-7 in U.S. TV history, growing by 6.589 million (from 10.337 million to 16.926 million). The Blacklist now holds the top three increases from L+SD to L+7 among total viewers in U.S. TV history. The series stars Emmy Award winner James Spader as "Red" Reddington, a world-renown terrorist on the FBI's Most Wanted List who is helping the U.S. government catch international criminals, but for unknown reasons. The series also stars Megan Boone, Diego Klattenhoff, Harry Lennix, Ryan Eggold and Parminder Nagra. The Blacklist joins Fox's freshman series Sleepy Hollow in getting early second season orders.
