SitcomsOnline Digest: Another Major Media Merger in the Works?; Digital Network Dabl Shifts Focus to Sitcoms
Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! We're heading into Christmas week, but surprisingly, we have lots of news, including another possible media merger (that we imagine will face a lot of scrutiny), news about a programming format change for a digital broadcast network, and more. Let's get going!
HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
- It seems that there are talks to merge Warner Bros and Paramount, though it is likely to face a lot of scrutiny. (Deadline)
- In related news (and probably something that would be necessary if the two media companies were to merge), it looks like BET (and related assets, including VH1) may be up for sale again, with Byron Allen interested in purchasing. (Variety)
- If you liked Run the Burbs when it aired on The CW, you won't be losing the chance to see it, as Hulu has now picked it up in an unrelated deal. (Deadline)
- The reboots never stop, and this week, there are talks of one for The X-Files. (Deadline)
- The network has remained quiet and refused to comment on it, but a major schedule change is coming to digital TV network Dabl (will it even still be called Dabl?) next week, and it includes nothing but episodes of mostly old UPN (and a tiny bit of The WB/The CW) sitcoms, including The Parkers, Half & Half, Moesha, Girlfriends, One on One, Sister, Sister, and The Game. (Cord Cutters News)
- John Stamos is remembering Bob Saget as the anniversary of his death approaches. (Deadline)
- Since the approach that The CW was taking to air international sitcoms turned out to be a huge disaster, they're now turning to airing reruns of American broadcast network sitcoms that are still airing in primetime, or at least doing it in one case with The Conners. (SitcomsOnline)
- Three's Company is back on DVD again, and this time, it includes every episode of both spinoffs. (SitcomsOnline)
WEEKLY PLANNER (DECEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 29)
- Night Court begins season 2 in January, but if you can't wait for a new episode, NBC has a Christmas one tonight, along with a sneak preview of the new sitcom Extended Family.
- South Park: Not Suitable for Children is now streaming on Paramount+, and it really isn't suitable for children.
- Catchy Comedy has a "Christmas Carol" this weekend, with a binge of Carol Burnett and Friends.

NBC has renewed the epic athletic competition series The Titan Games for a second season. In its first season, The Titan Games scored a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 with 6.0 million viewers overall in "live plus seven day" Nielsens, and those figures grew to a 2.6 in 18-49 and 8.6 million viewers after 35 days of digital and linear delayed viewing. Another sitcom is joining the Logo line-up. SitcomsOnline Digest: ABC Pulls The Mayor; Hulu Adds 90s Animated Favorites
HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
- It isn't totally official yet, but it looks like ABC may have impeached (or as they normally say in television, canceled) The Mayor after nine episodes, as it has been pulled from the lineup. (Entertainment Weekly)
- Alex Trebek is taking a bit of a break from Jeopardy! tapings due to a health scare, but he'll be back to taping new episodes soon enough that you won't even notice that he was gone. (NPR)
- Hoda Kotb is officially the new co-host of NBC's Today. (New York Times)
- Jon Paul Steuer, who is known from his role on Star Trek: The Next Generation and to sitcom fans for playing the first Quentin Kelly on Grace Under Fire, died this week at age 33. (Variety)
- The 300th episode of Family Guy will air on FOX next weekend, and an extended episode with limited commercials is planned for March. (SitcomsOnline)
HOME MEDIA RELEASES (JANUARY 9)
- Girlfriends - The Complete Series (DVD, $55.98): Every episode of this sitcom arrives on DVD in this value priced selection.
WEEKLY PLANNER (JANUARY 6 - JANUARY 12)
- You can binge watch some of the biggest animated series of the 90s on Hulu now, as they have added Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Tiny Toon Adventures, and (we guess just for completion since it was a "jump the shark" merger of two shows) Pinky Elmyra and the Brain.
- David Letterman's new talk show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, debuts Friday on Netflix with Barack Obama as his first guest, but instead of being able to binge watch episodes of this one as you can with most Netflix series, we'll instead get one new episode per month.
- Even if it was sort of panned by critics and viewers alike, new episodes of the Netflix sitcom Disjointed arrive on Friday.
- Alone Together, a new comedy produced by The Lonely Island, debuts Wednesday on Freeform.
- Something that we overlooked in the Weekly Planner last week with all of the news about marathons and new schedules was the debut of Grown-ish on Freeform, but luckily in the era of non-linear television, it isn't too late to catch up on those episodes either on demand or on Hulu.
- You can catch Get Smart all this weekend on the Weekend Binge on Decades.
- Speaking of Decades, their theme for January is Lost TV, and you can catch Love That Bob and Life With Elizabeth every weekday, and in addition, you can find some very rare lost sitcoms on their lineup next week such as Pistols 'n' Petticoats, The Beulah Show, and Accidental Family.
- Even though it isn't a "Lost TV" series, the series Lost has a new home on streaming media, on Hulu.

TV One Gets Girlfriends, Leaves BET/Centric; TNT Acquires Grimm for 2015
Girlfriends has began airing on TV One, as of September 29. The hit show starring Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White and Jill Marie Jones is now on TV One. The hit sitcom is airing weekdays 11am-12pm and 6-7pm along with a marathon block on Thursdays from 12-5pm. One of the series stars, Golden Brooks (Maya), is starring on the TV One original series Hollywood Divas, which has its season premiere tonight. so the network will air episodes spotlighting Maya tonight from 6-7pm. Back to Girlfriends, the move to TV One marks the end of the series airing on BET and Centric. In the series, Joan, Toni, Lynn and Maya navigate the ups and downs of life, love and friendship. Stay with us for continued updates, but as of now, no other changes to the TV One line-up besides this addition (and Living Single moving to mornings).
Grimm is coming to TNT. The "we know drama" network has closed a deal with NBCUniversal Television & New Media Distribution that gives TNT exclusive off-net cable rights to the hit series. TNT plans to begin airing episodes from the first three seasons of Grimm in early 2015, with season four episodes available to join the lineup in fall 2015. Seven Questions with Jaleel White of Family Matters; Centric Pulls What's Happening Now!! Marathon
"Seven Questions with Jaleel White of Family Matters"
SitcomsOnline: Tell us a little about your character Detective Hamer. Does he actually think Ellen is the woman who committed the murder?
SitcomsOnline: What was it like teaming up with Fred Dryer, who was famous for playing a detective before in Hunter?
SitcomsOnline: You and Danica McKellar both were sitcom stars from the same era, and you've even appeared in a made-for-TV movie, Camp Cucamonga, around the same era. Were you two friends and how was it like working on this project with her?
SitcomsOnline: Family Matters is turning 25 next fall. Do you think that will there be some sort of TV reunion you think? Maybe a sit-down retrospective or better yet, an actual reunion movie? Also, what was it like being the breakout character in the series that many people simply just refer to as "Urkel?"
SitcomsOnline: You started off so great on Dancing with the Stars on week one. We think you were eliminated way too soon. How was the experience like and was it a positive one? Do you keep in touch with your partner Kym? And do you think that we would have seen an appearance from Urkel had your run continued?
SitcomsOnline: Obviously the movie premieres on December 28 on Lifetime, but what other projects do you have going on?
SitcomsOnline: Would you like to work in a sitcom again?
We appreciate Jaleel taking the time to talk with us! We're hopeful that we do see him on a sitcom again in the future, and considering that he is still very young, we're mostly just wondering when and where it will happen. In the meantime, we encourage fans to check out the movie The Wrong Woman on Saturday, December 28 at 8 PM ET/PT on Lifetime.

Two weeks ago we told you about the What's Happening Now!! marathon on Centric on New Year's Day, but now they have pulled the stunt. Instead, we will get another marathon of Girlfriends instead on January 1 from 9am-8pm. No word on if and when What's Happening Now!! marathon will be rescheduled. We will certainly let you know, though if they do decide to reschedule. Perhaps they will add What's Happening Now!! to the regular schedule soon? We hope so at least, stay with us for further updates.
With the success of middle-class African American shows of the 1980's, Bud Yorkin made an attempt to resurrect What's Happening!! with the majority of the original cast. What's Happening Now!! debuted in first-run syndication in 1985. This time around, Raj (Ernest Thomas) and best friends Rerun (Fred Berry) and Dwayne (Haywood Nelson) have matured and were trying to juggle the pressures of their personal and professional lives. Like its original predecessor, What's Happening Now!! was well received in the first couple of seasons. But by the third year, audiences had faltered and the production company pulled it from the air at the end of the season.

Centric Fall 2012 Schedule Has More Sitcoms; Maude 40th Anniversary Marathon on Antenna TV
Centric will be adding a few new sitcoms this fall! The Centric fall 2012 schedule will begin on Monday, Oct. 1 and they will be adding the popular sitcom Moesha starring Brandy and the late Bernie Mac's comedy Bernie Mac, which will move over from sister network BET. Moesha will air back-to-back at 2:00pm & 2:30pm and also in primetime at 9:00pm & 9:30pm, while Bernie Mac will air in primetime at 8:00pm & 8:30pm and again at 12 midnight & 12:30am. The Jamie Foxx Show will be leaving the line-up, but that comedy will move to sister network BET. We will have more on that when we announce BET's Fall 2012 schedule, so stay tuned for that! Elsewhere on the schedule, In Living Color is back on Centric to a regular time period airing weekdays at 11:00am & 11:30am, as is Girlfriends airing weekdays at 1:00pm & 1:30pm. This means 227 is off the schedule completely, as its contract expires at the end of September. Other favorites like The Cosby Show, A-Team, Miami Vice, Steve Harvey Show, Wayans Bros and NY Undercover will remain on the schedule. And if you're wondering, yes Moesha will remain on GMC TV as well, as we mentioned.
That's pretty much the fall 2012 schedule, but of course on weekends we will get marathon stunts. Moesha will get a marathon on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 11am-7pm (select encores 2-4am) and Sunday, Oct. 7 from 10am-5pm. In primetime those two days, you'll see episodes of Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey Show, In Living Color, Girlfriends, Cosby Show, and Wayans Bros - all of which air weekdays as well. Beginning Friday, Oct. 5, Centric will air the syndicated first-run sitcoms The First Family and Mr. Box Office in the 8pm hour. Both sitcoms are going to be airing this fall on weekends in broadcast syndication (in NYC on Saturdays in primetime on WPIX). Back to weekends, Centric marathons for September are: Girlfriends (Friday, Sept. 7 from 10am-11pm), The Cosby Show (Saturday, Sept. 8 & Sunday, Sept. 9 from 10am-11pm), The Jamie Foxx Show (Saturday, Sept. 15 & Sunday, Sept. 16 from 11am-9pm), The Steve Harvey Show (Saturday, Sept. 22 & Sunday, Sept. 23 from 11am-9pm), and a Shaka Zulu stunt (Saturday, Sept. 29 & Sunday, Sept. 30 from 11am-11pm). We will keep you up to date of the October marathons.
View the full Centric Fall 2012 schedule. Stay tuned for further updates. Moesha is a sitcom (which, in later years, took more of a dramatic turn) that follows the life and times of a black teenager living in the Leimert Park section of Los Angeles, CA. For years since her mother died, Moesha Mitchell has taken care of her father Frank and younger brother Myles. So when a teacher at her school, Dee, marries Frank, Moesha feels her territory being encroached upon by a new step mother. Bernie Mac follows a stand-up comedian that suddenly becomes a father when he takes custody of his sister's three children.

Walter and Maude's best friends are next-door neighbors Dr. Arthur (Conrad Bain) and Vivian Harmon (Rue McClanahan). BET Fall 2011 Schedule Has My Wife & Kids; ION Schedules Flashpoint In October 2011
The full weekday sitcom schedule will start at 8am with an hour of Everybody Hates Chris, followed by a two-hour block of Bernie Mac from 9am-11am. Then the 11am will have The Parkers leading into My Wife & Kids in the 12pm hour. A movie follows at 1pm then it's back to sitcoms with an hour of Everybody Hates Chris at 3pm, then The Parkers at 4pm leading into My Wife & Kids at 5pm.
On weekends, there will be a sitcom block as well. But the times vary usually. You can expect sitcoms usually between 9am-5pm on Saturdays and 10:30am-2pm on Sundays. Sitcoms include Bernie Mac, Everybody Hates Chris, The Parkers and My Wife & Kids. Stunt wise, BET will air a Girlfriends marathon, from sister network Centric, on Sunday, Oct. 8 from 8am-7pm.
If anything should change, we will be back to tell you. So keep checking everyday. And we will be back with Centric's Fall 2011 schedule very soon! Check back everyday!
We have a third update to ION's fall 2011 schedule. This time it isn't anything major, as yesterday's changes with the addition of George Lopez. ION Television previously announced they would air episodes of the Canadian drama Flashpoint but now we have a lunch date! ION Television premieres its newly acquired hit police drama Flashpoint on Tuesday, October 18 at 10pm ET/PT with new original episodes. ION Television, the new home for the award-winning series, will schedule Flashpoint in a two-hour block on Tuesdays from 10pm-12am (encores 1am and 2am) ET/PT and again on Saturdays from 9-11pm (encores 1am and 2am) ET/PT. So the schedule is only affected by these Flashpoint changes.

BET July 2011 Highlights; Gilmore Girls Not Leaving July 4 on ABC Family...Or Is It?
Now on to the July changes, it seems like The Game will be taking a bit of a rest, as the series will be off the regular weekday line-up starting Monday, July 4. Everybody Hates Chris will be expanded to 4pm-6pm, while its 8am hour will become Girlfriends. After that, Bernie Mac remains 9am-11am, but Girlfriends will air in the 11am hour, cutting the two-hour Jamie Foxx Show block to the 12pm hour. Not to worry, because Jamie Foxx Show will get that second hour now at 3pm following the afternoon movie at 1pm.
So there you have it, the new sitcom line-up on BET every weekday from 8am-6pm (except 1-3pm) starting in July.
The Game will likely return soon for sure, as it does well in the ratings but it probably needs to take a rest since it has aired quite a lot. The series will however air on the weekends for an hour every Saturday morning (times vary, but usually 8-9am or 10-11am), kicking-off the Saturday sitcom block (of the same comedies on weekdays). Of course all-new episodes of The Game return in January 2012 for a fifth season and it became the highest rated basic cable sitcom ever when BET launched season four this past winter.
Last Thursday we gave you ABC Family July 2011 details and told you repeats of The Secret Life of the American Teenager would start on July 4 airing weekdays at 5pm replacing fan favorite Gilmore Girls, but now that is not happening...well sort of. Gilmore Girls will remain on the schedule until July 18 and that's when The Secret Life of the American Teenager will now start its weekday strip run at 5pm. No word on why the two-week delay, but fans of Gilmore Girls shouldn't worry too much because the series always ends up back on the schedule at some point. If I were to guess, at the latest Lauren Graham and company would be back on the air in the fall.

Hallmark Channel June 2011 Highlights; BET Schedules Chris, Harvey Stunts
New stunts for June 2011 will have a marathon of The Waltons on Sunday, June 5 from 2pm-10pm. Saturday, June 25 will have an all-day sitcom stunt starting at 6am with two hours of I Love Lucy leading into Empty Nest from 7am-11am. The Golden Girls will follow from 11am-2pm, with Frasier airing from 2pm-5pm. And if you want more The Golden Girls, you got it from 5pm-8pm leading into a primetime delight of Frasier from 8pm-11pm. Cheers will also get in on the act with a stunt from 11pm-2am leading to the overnight Empty Nest from 2am-5am.
Finally, we have a preview of the first week of July, which will feature a three-day sitcom event for the Fourth of July weekend! It's the same sitcom stunt schedule we mentioned above with the same times and shows. This is for Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3. What will air on Monday, July 4? We'll let you know in a few weeks in our July 2011 highlights, because well that is part of the July line-up. So stay with us for that!
BET has some sitcom stunts in the works for us sitcom fans! A week-long Everybody Hates Chris marathon is coming in June! The marathon airs during graduation week from Monday, June 13 through Friday, June 17 from 1pm-6pm each afternoon! The sitcom regularly airs weekdays in the 8am hour. And in time for Father's Day, BET will air a a Father's Day stunt with episodes from The Steve Harvey Show on Saturday, June 18 from 12pm-6pm as we get ready for Father's Day the next day! This sitcom regularly airs on sister network Centric every weekday.
Elsewhere, for Memorial Day (May 30), they will have a marathon of The Game from 8am-7:30pm showcasing the second half season three and all 13 episodes from the fourth season! This is a good way to catch-up, if you missed anything this season. On Saturday, June 4, catch the complete fourth season of Girlfriends in a 12-hour block from 8am-8pm with all 24 episodes from that season!

The following weekend has comedy with Sister, Sister on Saturday, May 7 from 12pm-6pm and encoring on Mother's Day (Sunday, May 8) from 9am-3pm. WE tv Acquires Frasier; Svengoolie Goes National on MeTV Network
That's about it for WE tv, as the rest of the schedule is reality series. On Tuesday nights they will premiere two new series starting April 12 in Braxton Family Values and Sinbad's It's Just Family. Maybe they should air the short-lived early '90s comedy Sinbad as a promotion? Wishful thinking. Stay tuned for any further information on Frasier on WE tv!
Yesterday we gave you news on MeTV getting more affiliates, now we have scheduling news. MeTV is opening up the dungeon door and unleashing Svengoolie on the country! For more than 30 years, Svengoolie has been Chicago's premiere horror show host. Now, this classic program is airing nationwide on the Me-TV Network! It began on Saturday, April 2, and Svengoolie will continue to open up his coffin for business every Saturday night at 10PM/9c on Me-TV.
Since Svengoolie first debuted, generations of viewers have become dedicated fans of the movie event which mixes up horror and humor. This phenomenon was not limited to Chicago; many television stations across the country, from the 1950's until 1980's had beloved horror movie hosts but Svengoolie's cult-followers never stopped watching. Me-TV's brand is about presenting and preserving memorable entertainment, making Svengoolie a perfect fit for the classic television network.
Svengoolie will feature classic Universal horror films, many of which have not been seen on broadcast television in years, including Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Invisible Man. And it's Sven's unique scary sense of humor that makes each program a frightfully funny experience. Me-TV, memorable entertainment television is a classic TV network owned and operated by Weigel Broadcasting Co. Log on to MeTVNetwork.com for a program schedule, as well as where to watch Me-TV.

NBC Picks Up Office, Community, 'Parks' for Next Season; BET Sends 'Chris' to Mornings; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of March 21 2011)
Just the other day we told you about the Girlfriends weekend marathon on BET, and that is still happening, but now BET has changed their weekday schedule starting this coming Monday! Effective March 21, Everybody Hates Chris moves to the weekday morning line-up, going from 5-6pm to 8-9am, replacing an encore of The Mo'nique Show. No word why, but perhaps the ratings were lagging in the evening slot. As a result, some further changes will be made, too on weekdays. Bernie Mac remains from 9-11am as does Jamie Foxx Show in the 11am hour, but another hour of Jamie Foxx will be added in the 12pm hour, so it will get a second hour. This means Girlfriends will be moved and it will be moving to the 3-5pm block leading into the new time for The Game in the 5pm hour, where Everybody Hates Chris was. After a long hiatus from BET, it seems Girlfriends is back big time. It resurfaced a bit on sister network Centric then was quietly moved back to BET and now it is back with a bang!
It's Friday, so it is time for "Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows" for the coming week. This is where we list what sitcom stars are appearing on talk shows for the coming week, the stars are both current and past sitcom stars (but we won't cover movie stars like Tom Hanks or John Travolta, since they won't be talking about their past sitcoms likely), so this is for all sitcom fans of all eras!

Working Class Season Finale April 1, No Foolin'; BET Adds Weekend Girlfriends Marathon, The Game Season Finale on March 29
In the first episode of the one-hour finale block, Carli brings an internet date (Guest star David Faustino, Married... with Children) to Rob's housewarming party, hoping to prove that she is a good catch. In the episode immediately following, Carli accepts an "employee of the month" award from Parker Foods, setting the stage for a flashback to when she first interviewed for the job (Guest star Martin Mull, Roseanne and 'Til Death).
The series has a 12 episode order for the first season and will complete it by airing two episodes on April 1. The Singing Bee 3, which is hosted by Working Class star Melissa Peterman, takes over the time period beginning April 8. No word yet on a second season of the sitcom, but odds are that it will get a second season. Stay tuned!
In a last minute scheduling move, BET has added a weekend marathon of sitcom Girlfriends for this coming week, March 19-20. Girlfriends will air this Saturday (March 19) from 8am-6:30pm into a mini-block of The Game. Then the marathon continues on Sunday (March 20) with a block from 10:30am-3:30pm. Girlfriends airs weekdays on BET in the 12 noon hour. It also airs at various times on weekends in the early afternoon. Elsewhere at BET, there will be a full season four marathon of all 13 episodes of The Game on Saturday, April 2 from 3pm-9:30pm. The season finale will air on Tuesday, March 29 at 10pm. But the following Tuesday (April 5) a special "Twitter" encore episode (not sure what it is yet) of the finale is scheduled at 10pm leading into the finale of freshman sitcom Let's Stay Together at 10:30pm. Then on Tuesday, April 12, there will be a special all-new The Mo'nique Show at a special time of 9pm with the cast of The Game reuniting leading into new series Toya at 10pm.
