Netflix Cancels 4 Sitcoms Including Kevin James Series; HBO Max's Pretty Little Liars Casts Two Leads

The Crew & Country Comfort

Netflix has canceled four comedies, including two freshman sitcoms. Netflix will remain in business with several stars, though. Freshman multi-camera sitcoms The Crew starring Kevin James and Country Comfort starring Katharine McPhee & Eddie Cibrian are two that got axed after one season, while single-camera comedy Bonding with Zoe Levin and multi-camera sitcom Mr. Iglesias starring Gabriel Iglesias have been canceled after two seasons. But three of those comedies have talent or producers to develop other projects. Kevin James is developing a single-camera comedy series with the streaming service to produce and star in, while Bonding creator Rightor Doyle has closed a development deal with the service and Gabriel Iglesias has a new stand-up comedy special slated to shoot this summer to air later this yrar only on Netflix.

Chandler Kinney and Maia Reficco

HBO Max has added Chandler Kinney and Maia Reficco to the Max Original Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. Lisa Soper (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) will direct the first two episodes of the series from Warner Bros. Television. Chandler Kinney (Zombies 2, Lethal Weapon) will play "Tabby," an aspiring director and horror movie buff. Like the other Little Liars, Tabby's hiding a secret. Maia Reficco (Strangers, Evita, Kally's Mashup) will play "Noa," a striving, sardonic track star who's working hard to get her life back to normal after a summer spent in juvenile detention. Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a group of disparate teen girls - a brand-new set of Little Liars - find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago...as well as their own. In the dark, coming-of-age, horror-tinged drama Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, we find ourselves miles away from Rosewood, but within the existing Pretty Little Liars universe - in a brand-new town, with a new generation of Little Liars.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is from executive producer/writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and co-executive producer/writer Lindsay Calhoon Bring (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina). The series is produced by Aguirre-Sacasa's Muckle Man Productions and Alloy Entertainment (Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries, You) in association with Warner Bros. Television. Michael Grassi, Caroline Baron, and Alloy's Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo are also executive producers of the series, which is based upon the bestselling series of books by Sara Shepard. The series is scheduled to begin production later this summer at Upriver Studios in New York.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Netflix Cancels Several Sitcoms; Telma Hopkins Cast in NBC Dark Dramedy Pilot

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're learning of several cancellations from Netflix, a new NBC pilot with Telma Hopkins, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • Netflix had a good start with sitcoms, but now they've announced the cancellation of several of the more recent ones, including The Crew and Mr. Iglesias. (Deadline)
  • Telma Hopkins has been cast in the pilot for Dangerous Moms, a dark dramedy for NBC. (Deadline)
  • When Saturday Night Live returns in the fall, it could be without some key cast members (although to be fair, we've heard similar rumblings in past seasons when all of the ones whom were thought to be on the way out came back after all). (Vanity Fair)
  • NBC's plans for after the Olympics seem to have backfired explosively, so to speak, as an outbreak of explosive diarrhea shut down production of Ultimate Slip 'N Slide and created enough issues for the network to pull the premiere from the schedule. (People)
  • Bill Cosby was unexpectedly released from prison this week as his conviction was overturned (though we don't exactly expect to see him return to TV in any way), but as it turns out, it seems Phylicia Rashad made more news from the incident than Cosby did for reasons that she says she now regrets. (CNN)
  • Disney+ is taking advantage of two distinct properties, The Simpsons and Marvel, to create a new short that will debut on Wednesday. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (JULY 3 - JULY 9)

  • Although 4th of July marathons aren't nearly as special as they once were since most TV stations like to "binge" shows now anyway, Antenna TV has a day of The Jeffersons on Sunday.
  • Syfy has given up on their annual marathons of The Twilight Zone, but Decades is continuing the trend with their own binge of it this weekend.
  • HBO Max has the reboot of Gossip Girl coming on Thursday.
  • Big Brother is still very much alive, and will return for an unbelievable 23rd season on Tuesday on CBS.
  • The final season of Younger debuts Tuesday on TV Land.
  • The fourth season of Grown-ish comes to Freeform on Thursday.

Fri-Yay: Status of Sitcoms on Disney+; Gabriel Iglesias Sitcom Launches June 21 on Netflix

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Disney Plus

by Vincent

Over the past few weeks, there has been increasing buzz over the launch of the next big streaming platform, the Disney-owned Disney+. Disney+ will launch this fall, and will be home to a large vault of Disney movies as well as Disney-owned television shows - which, as you might remember, expanded drastically after Disney officially bought Fox last year. In addition to Disney movies and Marvel-owned properties, previous Fox-owned series such as The Simpsons will also be on Disney+. The streaming network will be home to all 600+ episodes of the series. Disney+ will no doubt compete with Netflix for being the reigning streaming giant, and will also be able to exist alongside Hulu, which is now also owned majority by Disney (since it was previously owned by Disney-owned ABC, Fox and NBC - now, Disney owns the majority of the streaming service.) Disney claims that Hulu and Disney+ will be able to exist alongside each other and target different audiences.

So, what does this mean for sitcoms? Well, it certainly creates an interesting landscape for sitcoms on streaming networks. Of all of the networks, ABC arguably has made the least presence on streaming networks - big hitters such as The Middle and Modern Family remain unavailable on any streaming platforms. But now with a clear possible home for them, and with Disney having so much stock in several streaming networks, it seems very likely this large library of ABC sitcoms may be streaming once again. Additionally, so many properties that are now ABC-owned are all over different streaming services - The Simpsons streams on "Simpsons World" on FXNow, and many of the other adult animated comedies are on Hulu, for example. Could these shows move services to be part of Disney's new plan? It'll be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few years.

Mr. Iglesias

Teaching is no joke. From stand-up phenom Fluffy to your new favorite history teacher, Gabriel Iglesias (Cristela) stars in the Netflix comedy series Mr. Iglesias launching June 21! In the multi-cam series Mr. Iglesias, Gabriel Iglesias plays a good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater. He takes on teaching gifted but misfit kids to not only save them from being "counseled out" by a bully bureaucrat Assistant Principal (Oscar Nunez), but also to help them unlock their full potential. Sherri Shepherd, Jacob Vargas, Maggie Geha, Richard Gant, Cree Cicchino, Fabrizio Guido co-star. Created by Kevin Hench (Last Man Standing, Cristela) and executive produced by Iglesias, Hench, Ron DeBlasio and Joe Meloche, Season 1 consists of 10 episodes. Mr. Iglesias will be released globally on Netflix on June 21.

Fluffy Gets Netflix Sitcom; Double Dare Returns to Nickelodeon

Gabriel Iglesias

Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias is giving viewers three times the laughs in three new, upcoming Netflix projects, including a multi-cam comedy sitcom and two stand-up comedy specials. In the multi-cam comedy series, Mr. Iglesias, Iglesias plays a good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater. He takes on teaching gifted but misfit kids to not only save them from being "counseled out" by a bully bureaucrat Assistant Principal, but also to help them unlock their full potential. Mr. Iglesias consists of ten, half-hour episodes and is produced by Netflix, with Iglesias serving as executive producer, along with Kevin Hench (Cristela, Last Man Standing). Iglesias previously appeared on the sitcom Cristela on ABC as a series regular and Iglesias recently guest starred on an episode of ABC's hit comedy Modern Family. The first of two stand-up comedy specials will be taped during Iglesias' current world tour "One Show Fits All," and the second on a future date.

Double Dare

Nickelodeon is bringing back the original kids' game show Double Dare this summer with 40 brand-new episodes, giving a new generation of fans the chance to compete in the messiest and most physically challenging competition of their lives. With Double Dare remaining an iconic touchstone for its original millennial audiences, the new version will feature the gameplay and challenges they remember, as well as appearances from blasts from the past and stars from today. Double Dare features two teams competing to win prizes by answering brain-bending trivia questions, completing messy, physical stunts and ultimately facing the infamous obstacle course--the human hamster wheel; the classic gigantic mouth; the wringer; and the iconic Double Dare nose.

Double Dare premiered on Oct. 6, 1986, on Nickelodeon, and ran from 1986-1993, making it the network's longest running game show. Shortly after its debut, Double Dare became one of the most popular original daily programs on cable television. The series went into syndication in 1988, and was later revamped as Super Sloppy Double Dare in 1989. The show also ran on broadcast television as Family Double Dare in 1988, followed by new versions on Nick, including Double Dare 2000.
