Week 24 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did

2012-13 Week 24 TV Ratings (first four nights, Mon-Thu):

Households: #1. CBS 6.7 rating/10.7 share; #2. Fox 6.6/10.2; #3. ABC 3.6/5.7; #4. NBC 2.4/3.9; #5. The CW 0.7/1.1
Total Viewers: #1. Fox 10.92 million; #2. CBS 10.59 million; #3. ABC 5.32 million; #4. NBC 3.73 million; #5. The CW 1.07 million.
Adults 18-49: #1. Fox 3.2 rating/8.9 share; #2. CBS 2.3/6.4; #3. ABC 1.6/4.3; #4. NBC 1.2/3.4; #5. The CW 0.4/1.1

Week 24 (March 4-10) Analysis: We have a lot of repeats mixed in here in early March, so the numbers are down. Through the first four nights, CBS and Fox are neck and neck for the lead in HH/total viewers, while Fox is way on top in adults 18-49. CBS is in second place in 18-49, followed by ABC, then NBC is a very distant fourth. In HH/viewers, ABC is a distant third behind CBS and Fox. And NBC is a distant fourth and it continues to be a long winter for them. It's basically similar to previous week, but Fox is higher in all categories. When the week is done, Fox will hang on and take the week in 18-49, but CBS will come back and take total viewers. More on that later. As for the previous week, week 23, Fox took home first in adults 18-49 with only a 2.2 rating. CBS was second, while ABC was only three tenths behind. NBC was way back there once again. Among total viewers, it was of course CBS on top easily over Fox and ABC. And NBC was way back behind in fourth, like every week since January.

Monday saw Fox win the night since ABC and CBS had many repeats. Starting with ABC, a two-hour The Bachelor: The Women Tell All special from 8-10pm did 8.53 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, which is down just a tenth in 18-49 from previous week regular episode. The season finale is tomorrow night and it should be big and easily win the night. At 10pm, Castle was a repeat and did 6.84 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, which won the hour. For NBC, they had a two-hour The Biggest Loser from 8-10pm doing 5.94 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is on par in 18-49 with previous week. It's done OK, nothing special. At 10pm, week nine of new drama dud Deception didn't do much with 3.35 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, which was down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. CBS was almost all repeats with its comedies, as a repeat of How I Met Your Mother did 5.3 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating. A new Rules of Engagement at 8:30pm did 6.92 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is solid but down five tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Not too bad since the lead-in and lead-out were repeats. At 9pm, a repeat of 2 Broke Girls followed with 6.48 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, not bad but could be better. Next, a repeat of Mike & Molly did 6.79 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, building from its lead-in in both measures. A repeat of Hawaii Five-0 at 10pm did 5.68 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Fox aired an all-new episode of Bones at 8 and it did 8.41 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which was back down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. At 9pm, week seven (already?) of new drama The Following at 9pm did 8.81 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, which was on par in 18-49 with previous week. And it was picked-up for next season, as expected. The CW aired week eight of The Carrie Diaries at 8 and did 1.1 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating, which is again on par in 18-49 with previous week.  At 9, 90210 was new and did only 0.64 million and a 0.3 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. The show has been canceled and will end in May. I think more people know it is canceled then who actually watch an episode.

On Tuesday, it was Fox with the victory with a special Tuesday Idol. On CBS, NCIS was new and did 20.81 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating, which was on par in 18-49 with previous week. At 9pm, a new NCIS: Los Angeles did 16.24 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. At 10pm, week two of Golden Boy did 9.4 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's series premiere, but good enough to win a weak hour. Onto ABC, at 8pm week two of Celebrity Wife Swap did 4.14 million and a 1.5 18-48 rating, down a big nine tenths in 18-49 from previous week's season premiere. I think Idol hurt it the most. At 9pm, the penultimate episode of The Taste did 3.19 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, down two more tenths in 18-49 from previous week for a new low. A new Body of Proof aired at 10pm and did 6.59 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, which was up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week for a season high. I think it will be better once compatible Dancing comes as a lead-in. NBC aired Betty White's Off Their Rockers from 8-9pm as the first half-hour was a repeat and did 3.56 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating. A new episode followed at 8:30pm and did 3.56 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. At 9pm, Go On was all-new but NBC wishes it wasn't airing as it only did 3.07 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, again on par in 18-49 with previous week, for a series low. At 9:30pm, it was more bad news as The New Normal did a horrible 2.44 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week for a series low. At 10pm, it was just as bad with a new Smash doing 2.68 million and an embarrassing 0.8 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week for a new series low. I bet they wished they had more Parenthood episodes now right? Fox preempted its comedies Raising Hope, New Girl and The Mindy Project for a Tuesday edition of American Idol from 8-10pm and won them the night with 11.72 million and a 3.5 18-49 rating, more than double what Fox does with its comedies. The CW aired a new Hart of Dixie and did just 1.5 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. A repeat of Beauty & the Beast replaced Friday bound Cult at 9 and did 0.73 million and a 0.3 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week's all-new Cult, ouch.

Wednesday it was Fox again with night two of three of American Idol and it took the night of course since its two-hours every Wednesday and Fox only programs 2 hours a night. But first, CBS started the night off with a new Survivor: Caramoan at 8 doing 9.58 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, which is on par in 18-49 with previous week. Criminal Minds was a repeat at 9 and did 6.85 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which isn't repeating as well as it used to. At 10pm, a repeat of CSI did 6.73 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, good enough to win the hour.  ABC kicked off the night with a repeat of The Middle doing 5.91 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which beat a new airing of NBC's comedy, ouch. At 8:30pm a new episode of The Neighbors did 5.74 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week despite its lead-in being a repeat. I think that should seal them a season two. Look for our review of this Wednesday's episode at noon. The Musical episode! At 9pm, a repeat of Modern Family did the best of the block with 6.16 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, which is at normal repeat levels. Suburgatory followed at 9:30pm with a new episode doing 4.6 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, down five tenths in 18-49 from previous week when its lead-in was new. Could be better. At 10pm, Nashville was a repeat and did 3.2 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, as it doesn't repeat well but at least it beat a new Smash for the week, ha. This show will be back next season because it is so well done. On Fox, a two-hour American Idol did a solid 12.84 million and a 3.8 18-49 rating, but down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week as it keeps going down each week. Onto NBC a new episode of Whitney started it off at 8pm with 3.83 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week but couldn't top an ABC comedy repeat. At 8:30pm, a repeat followed and did 2.87 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, down only a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's new Guys with Kids. Law & Order: SVU followed at 9pm with a repeat that did only 4.27 million and only a 1.1 18-49 rating. At 10pm, a repeat of Chicago Fire did 3.94 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, which is disappointing because this show seems to have more of a repeat value. The CW aired a repeat of its new hit Arrow and did 1.77 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating. At 9pm, a repeat of Supernatural did 1.08 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating. These two shows work well with each other.

On Thursday, an expanded Idol carried Fox to tie with CBS. Starting with ABC, a repeat of Shark Tank aired and did 4.35 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, two tenths better in 18-49 than previous week's new episode of Zero Hour which is dead. At 9pm, Grey's Anatomy was a repeat and did 3.65 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating. New episodes return this Thursday. At 10pm, ABC aired a repeat of TV #1 show at 10pm Scandal doing 3.6 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating. New episodes return March 21. CBS had a night of mostly new episodes and opened with a new The Big Bang Theory doing 17.63 million and a 5.5 18-49 rating, which is by far #1 for the week. A new Two and a Half Men was up next and benefited with 13.54 million and a 3.9 18-49 rating. At 9pm, a new episode of older-skewing Person of Interest followed with 14.57 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating. At 10pm, a repeat of freshman Elementary closed the night with 8.69 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week despite its lead-in being new  Fox had a 90-minute American Idol from 8-9:32pm that did 13.12 million and a 3.6 18-49 rating, which was down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week when it aired 8-10pm.  Glee aired from 9:32-10:32pm and did 6.72 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, as its primary competition was in repeats. NBC aired a mix of new and repeat episodes of its comedies, as week five of Community did 3.29 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week, which is surprising. It won't last with daylight savings time this Thursday. Parks & Recreation was a repeat at 8:30pm and did 2.33 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. A repeat of The Office was next and did only 2.34 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, also up a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week. At 9:30m a new 1600 Penn, which is doing horrible, did only 2.1 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week's series low. When will they pull this show? We have a review of this week's episode this week. At 10pm, NBC had a repeat of Law & Order: SVU doing 3.9 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, as that was up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. The CW's big gun Vampire Diaries aired at 8 but was a repeat and did 0.96 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating, which was on par in 18-49 with previous week. At 9, Beauty and the Beast was also a repeat and did 0.76 million and a 0.3 18-49 rating, also on par in 18-49 with the previous week.

Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, as ABC took Friday in 18-49 again. CBS had a new Undercover Boss at 8, but it only tied for first place.  Kitchen Nightmares was third for Fox as ABC's Last Man Standing and Malibu Country tied for first with CBS. NBC's season premiere of Fashion Star was  big dud in fourth place.  ABC was still in first at 9pm by a lot with a new Shark Tank easily beating the Grimm return on NBC, which was second place crushing CBS' Golden Boy. At 10, Rock Center was last place again for NBC, losing to second place Blue Bloods on CBS and first place 20/20 on ABC. Fox again struggled badly with Touch at 9.
Saturday had Fox win on a very slow night again. Fox took the 8pm hour with Cops, but struggled at 9 with a repeat of The Following, while CBS took 10pm with 48 Hours. ABC aired 20/20 Saturday from 9-11pm and did low but again won at 9pm. NBC settled for repeats of American Ninja Warrior, Chicago Fire and SNL which all struggled. ABC aired a repeat of the previous Once Upon a Time episode at 8pm to promote tonight's episode and was up from previous week.

Tonight ABC Sunday is all-new with AFV, Once Upon a Time, Revenue and Red Widow, as Revenge returns with a big episode. #NoMoreDistractions. I think it will be a first place finish for ABC, but it Red Widow needs to stay at a 1.5 or more. NBC devotes the night to Celebrity Apprentice: All-Stars, with a repeat of the premiere from 7-9pm leading into the new episode from 9-11pm. NBC will likely finish third or fourth place. CBS has 60 Minutes at 7, followed by a new Amazing Race, the new episodes of struggling The Good Wife & The Mentalist from 9-11pm. I'm thinking a third finish for CBS in 18-49. Fox's animation block is all new from 7:30-10pm and should be second (or first, if Red Widow does terrible at 10) place in 18-49.

As for the week (week 24), Fox will hang on and take the week in 18-49. CBS will be second, and ABC will be third in 18-49. NBC will be way behind and in fourth. So basically similar to week 23. For total viewers, CBS will come back and take over Fox for first. Three nights of Idol is not enough even  for Fox to win total viewers. ABC should be third and NBC in a distant fourth.  As for the coming week (week 25), ABC has the season finale of The Bachelor tomorrow with a live After the Final Rose special at 10:07pm. Both should be big. Fox premieres Hell's Kitchen on Tuesday with a two-hour premiere, while Celebrity Wife Swap & The Taste on Tuesday have their finales on ABC, as the former has 6 more episodes to air in summer (while the regular edition premieres March 21). And on Thursday, NBC airs the dead back-door pilot of the The Office spin-off series The Farm.

Week 24 How the Sitcoms Did

Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for Week 23 -- Feb. 25-March 3)
  • The Simpsons (Fox) 2 airings - A new episode at 8 did 4.66 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is decent but could be better. A repeat earlier in the night at 7pm did 3.11 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, four tenths better in 18-49 than the repeat of Bob's Burgers in the same time period the previous week.
  • The Cleveland Show (Fox) 2 airings - A new airing at its normal time of 7:30pm did 3.28 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating. A special new episode at a special time of 8:30pm did 3.78 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating. Could be better.
  • Bob's Burgers (Fox) - The normal 8:30 airing was preempted, but a new episode aired at a special time of 9:30pm and did 3.67 million and 1.7 18-49 rating, losing steam from its lead-in, which was a repeat.
  • Family Guy (Fox) - A repeat at 9 did 4.15 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, up four tenths in 18-49 from previous week.
  • American Dad! (Fox) - preempted.
Monday Sitcoms
  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - A repeat at 8 did 5.3 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, not too bad for a repeat at 8pm.
  • Rules of Engagement (CBS) - Week five at 8:30pm did 6.92 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, solid but down five tenths in 18-49 from the previous week since the lead-in was a repeat.
  • 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - A repeat at 9 did 6.48 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, solid but this is not anchor material. Perhaps it is better suited for 8:30 like last season?
  • Mike & Molly (CBS) - A repeat at 9:30pm did 6.79 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, which built on its repeat lead-in.
Tuesday Sitcoms
  • Raising Hope (Fox) - preempted.
  • New Girl (Fox) - preempted.
  • Go On (NBC) - A new episode did a series tying low 3.07 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, as this series has completely tanked.
  • The Mindy Project (Fox) - preempted.
  • The New Normal (NBC) - A new episode at 9:30pm was clobbered with just 2.44 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, back down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week tying its series low.Won't be back next season, I think.
Wednesday Sitcoms
  • The Middle (ABC) - A repeat at 8 did 5.91 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which is not bad for a repeat.
  • Whitney (NBC) 2 airings - A new episode at 8 did 3.83 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, which is up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week but not much since it didn't beat a competing ABC comedy when it was  a repeat. At 8:30pm, a repeat followed with only 2.87 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating.
  • The Neighbors (ABC) - A new showing of this new comedy did 5.74 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. It's the little show that could. Does decent. I think it WILL be back next season folks, whether it's here or on Friday. It's doing well creatively, too, as you will see this Wednesday with the musical episode (it's hilarious - our review is posting on Wednesday).
  • Modern Family (ABC) - A repeat at 9 did 6.16 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, #1 for the block as usual even when it is a repeat. Sign of a strong anchor.
  • Suburgatory (ABC) - A new episode at 9:30pm did 4.6 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which is down five tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Such a good show but might be better suited for 8:30 next season (or even Friday). It's a repeat this Wednesday.
Thursday Sitcoms
  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - At 8pm, a new episode did 17.63 million and a 5.5 18-49 rating, which is by far #1 for the week. It might not do a 6 again this season as Daylight Savings Time is here. But if it can do a 5 at 8pm, that is huge.
  • Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A new episode did 13.54 million and a 3.9 18-49 rating, solid and took advantage of the nice lead-in.
  • Community (NBC) - Week five did 3.29 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which is up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Weird jump. But probably goes back down this Thursday.
  • Parks & Recreation (NBC) - A repeat at 8:30pm did 2.33 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week.
  • The Office (NBC) - A repeat at 9 did 2.34 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, also up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week.
  • 1600 Penn (NBC) - A new episode at 9:30pm did only 2.1 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, tying its series low in 18-49 from the previous week.
Friday Sitcoms
  • Last Man Standing (ABC) - A new episode did a prelim 7.01 million and a prelim 1.5 18-49 rating, which was down just a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's preliminaries. Great episode and showing!
  • Malibu Country (ABC) - A new airing of this new comedy did a prelim 5.96 million and a prelim 1.3 18-49 rating, also down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's prelim ratings.
Saturday Sitcoms
  • None.
Airing tonight (Sunday) are a mix of new and repeat episodes of Fox Animation Domination comedies from 7-10pm.

Summing it up. The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Modern Family, Mike & Molly, Rules of Engagement, were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as The Neighbors, Suburgatory, 2 Broke Girls) or just plain terrible (such as all the comedies on NBC like The New Normal, Go On, 1600 Penn).
