SitcomsOnline Digest: Pilot Season in Full Force with Charlie McDermott and Whoopi Goldberg Comedies; Past Seasons of CSI Headed to Hulu

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! Once again, it has been a pretty busy week with news of pilots everywhere (we barely even scratch the surface here), including one pilot for CBS that includes the cast member of a sitcom that is still (seemingly) going strong on ABC. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • Charlie McDermott of ABC's The Middle has been cast in a pilot for next season for CBS, and while it is far from having a place on the CBS lineup, being picked up would certainly require some retooling for The Middle. (Deadline)
  • With marijuana legalization now coming to many states, it was only a matter of time before somebody came up with the idea of a sitcom about owning a dispensary in Colorado. And that is exactly what Parks and Recreation star Adam Scott came up with, as NBC has given the "green light" (pardon the pun) to a script commitment for such a comedy. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Whoopi Goldberg hasn't done a lot in the world of sitcoms (aside from her short-lived sitcom Whoopi!), but she is now looking to star in a possible ABC pilot. (HitFix)
  • If you enjoy binge watching and you enjoy CSI, you're really going to love the new agreement that Hulu has to stream every past season (over 300 episodes) of CSI. (Entertainment Weekly
  • Just days before the series finale for the NBC series Parks and Recreation, producer Harris Wittels has died at the age of 30. (Washington Post)
  • The digital broadcast network LAFF is still about two months away from launching, but this week, we found out that they'll be airing several sitcoms that are not overplayed elsewhere, including Empty Nest, Ellen, The Drew Carey Show, and Night Court. (SitcomsOnline)

Who to Follow: Jon Cryer (Twitter), "Author(?!) of So That Happened available April 7th Penguin/Random House. That guy who played Duckie in Pretty in Pink and Alan in Two and a Half Men"
Claim to Fame: Two and a Half Men has finally ended after twelve seasons (who knew it would last that long?), and in all of that time, we have failed to feature the only person to star (although Charlie Sheen considers him nothing more than a supporting actor) on the series for twelve seasons Jon Cryer here. Of course, even though he is best known for that role on Two and a Half Men, his first sitcom actually came in 1989 in the starring role on the CBS sitcom The Famous Teddy Z. Nobody remembers the series all that well since it didn't last an entire season, but it actually received two Emmy nominations. In 1995, he went to another sitcom, this time on Fox, with Partners. He has also done many movies since the mid-80s (most notably Pretty in Pink), and many would be surprised to know that he played the voice of Kevin Swanson in his first appearance on Family Guy (that role is now played by Seth MacFarlane).
Pick of the Tweets: "I'm filled with gratitude for every day you let me have this job. It's been an honor to embarrass myself." (February 19, 2015)
