Week 9 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did

2012-13 Week 9 TV Ratings (first four nights, Mon-Thu):

Households: N/A
Total Viewers: N/A.
Adults 18-49: N/A

Week 9 (Nov. 19-25) Analysis: November sweep came to an end on Wednesday and now the holiday season began on Thanksgiving Thursday. Because of the holiday, the final first four night averages are not available, as final ratings are only available for Monday and Tuesday. We can project that through the first four nights that NBC has the edge over CBS in 18-49 and total viewers. ABC and Fox are battling for third. When the week is done, NBC will get the week in 18-49 thanks to the NFL tonight and also on Thanksgiving Thursday in primetime. Fox has the NFL overrun tonight, so they could make a run for second place. More on that later. As for last week, week 8, NBC and CBS were tied for first in adults 18-49. ABC was a few tenths behind for third place, while Fox was back in fourth. Among total viewers, CBS took that crown once again, while ABC was second. NBC was a close third. Fox was well back in fourth.

Monday was another typical Monday, we had NBC on top in adults 18-49, while ABC took the total viewer crown. Starting with ABC, a two-hour Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars did 14.28 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week, as the finals airs tomorrow night. Castle followed with 10.36 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Next new episode is next Monday (Dec. 3), as Extreme Makeover: Home Edition returns for the holidays tomorrow night.  For NBC, a two-hour The Voice, did 10.6 million and a night best 3.718-49 rating, but down an alarming seven tenths in 18-49 from previous week for a Monday season low. Very strange. A new Revolution followed with 7.02 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week's series low despite its lead-in going down. Not bad considering that. Next up was CBS with new episodes, as How I Met Your Mother did 7.45 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from the previous week. A repeat of Two and a Half Men came in and did 6.02 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which is up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's all-new episode of Partners. A new 2 Broke Girls followed with 9.74 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating, which is up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week as the lead-in was more compatible probably. Still should be doing a bit better. Next, a new Mike & Molly garnered 9.25 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, which is down a tenth in 18-49 from the previous week. A new Hawaii Five-0 at 10pm did 9.02 million and a 2.2 18-49, again up a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week. Fox was next with a new Bones doing 7.11 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, back up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. A new episode of dud The Mob Doctor did only 3.08 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, but up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's series low. Are the 13 episodes up yet? The CW aired a new 90210 at 8 with just 780,000 viewers and a 0.4 18-49 rating, back down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. And a new Gossip Girl followed with just 720,000 viewers and a 0.4 18-49 rating, which is horrendous and on par in 18-49 with previous week.

On Tuesday, it was a sweep for CBS in 18-49 and total viewers. NBC took second place in 18-49. ABC claimed second in total viewers. Starting with CBS, a new episode of NCIS did 16.47 million and a 3.0 rating, which is good but below normal for this show. Next a new episode of NCIS: Los Angeles did 15.13 million and a 2.8 18-49 rating, on par with last week and posting good retention from its lead-in. And finally at 10pm, a new Vegas did 10.12 million a 1.8 18-49 rating, up two tenths from last week. Onto ABC, at 8pm Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars: The Results did 13.01 million and a 2.0 rating, as we said goodbye to Emmitt Smith and Apolo Ohno. It's down to the ladies with Melissa Rycroft, Kelly Monaco and Shawn Johnson battling for the mirror ball trophy. At 9pm, a new episode of Happy Endings did 4.48 million and only a 1.1 rating, as this show is not a fit out of the lead-in. A new episode of Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 did just 2.99 million and only a 0.9 rating, down two tenths from last week. At 10pm, part one of a two-night Private Practice did 4.24 million and a 1.3 rating, up two tenths from last week's series low. NBC started off with The Voice doing 9.47 million and a 3.4 rating, down five tenths from last week. At 9pm, new comedy Go On did 5.97 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, which is OK but not great. A new episode of The New Normal followed with 4.29 million and a 1.5 rating, down three tenths from last week but still winning the battle against the other comedies in the timeslot. A new Parenthood at 10pm did 4.62 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, down two tenths from last week. Fox had its comedies with a new Raising Hope doing 3.57 million and a 1.5 rating, down one tenth from last week. A new episode of Ben and Kate followed with only 2.35 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, even with last week. They should try this show at 9:30pm to see if it can improve. New Girl was up next with 4.11 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, down two tenths from last week. And finally a new The Mindy Project did just 2.64 million and a 1.3 rating, down three tenths from last week. It's normal for shows to be down during Thanksgiving week. The CW had a new Hart of Dixie at 8pm and did 1.23 million and a 0.5 rating, down a tenth from last week. New series Emily Owens MD followed with 1.29 and a 0.4 18-49 rating, even with last week.

Wednesday-Saturday results are not final due to the holiday, so these are all preliminary numbers. Preliminary results show CBS in the lead in 18-49 and total viewers on Thanksgiving Eve. Fox is in second place in both categories. First, CBS started the night off with week ten of Survivor: Philippines at 9.36 million and a 2.3 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Veteran drama Criminal Minds followed at 9 with 11.47 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, down three tenths from last week. A new CSI at 10 did 10.67 million and a 2.3 rating, down two tenths from last week. ABC kicked off the holiday season with their first airing of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving doing 8.10 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, up four tenth from last year's airing. At pm, a repeat of Modern Family did 5.83 million and a 1.7 rating, down quite a bit from a typical repeat. A repeat of Suburgatory followed with 3.83 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating. The conclusion of the two-night Private Practice event garnered only 3.68 million and a 1.0 rating, down two tenths from the first part. ABC is clearly burning off the remaining episodes as quickly as possible at this point. On Fox, a new two-hour The X Factor did 7.18 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, down seven tenths from last week. Onto NBC, week two of Whitney did 3.94 million and a 1-1 18-49 rating, down three tenths from the season premiere. New comedy Guys with Kids followed with another series low of 3.50 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, down two tenths from last week. At 9, a new Law & Order: SVU did 5.19 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, down four tenths from last week. Week seven of Chicago Fire followed at 10 doing 5.43 million and a 1.4 rating, down two two tenths from last week. I wonder why the networks are scheduling any new scripted shows for Thanksgiving Eve. They should be saving new episodes. The CW had an airing of the Thanksgiving film classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles at 8pm. It did 1.72 million and a 0.5 18-49 rating. Smart move by The CW to not burn any new episodes.

Preliminary results for Thursday show NBC with a big win in both categories thanks to football. Fox is in second place. Starting with ABC, a second airing of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving did 4.05 million and a 1.2 18-49. When you combine the two airings, those are some solid numbers. A Modern Family repeat at 9pm did 3.44 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating. The Bad 25 Michael Jackson special did bad ratings with just a preliminary 1.2 18-49 rating. CBS had a night of repeats. They opened with a repeat The Big Bang Theory doing 7.11 million and a 1.8 rating, down quite a bit from a typical repeat as expected. A repeat Two and a Half Men was up next with 6.77 million and a 1.8 rating, good retention from its lead-in. At 9pm, it was another repeat of #1 comedy (or scripted series) The Big Bang Theory with 7.34 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. A repeat of 2 Broke Girls followed with 6.14 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating. At 10pm, a repeat of Person of Interest closed the night with 6.80 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating. Fox's primetime was delayed by 17 minutes due to the NFL overrun, so these numbers are scrambled and will change. The X Factor started the night with 8.32 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating. The 9pm half-hour of The X Factor and Glee did 6.89 million and a 2.3 18-49 rating. The final half-hour of Glee did 4.45 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating. NBC's Football Night in America did 10.89 and a 3.7 18-49 rating at 8pm. The New England Patriots at New York Jets game followed with a preliminary 6.2 18-49 rating to easily lead NBC to the nightly win. The CW's big gun Vampire Diaries had a repeat airing and did 794,000 viewers and a 0.2 18-49 rating. New series Beauty and the Beast also had a repeat and did 845,000 viewers and a 0.2 18-49 rating, posting an unlikely win in viewers over its lead-in.

Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, but ABC took the ratings and 18-49 crowns on Friday. CBS has a slight edge in 18-49, while NBC is in second in total viewers. A new Last Man Standing and Malibu Country were even with last week. A repeat of the surging Shark Tank won the 9pm hour. CBS, Fox and The CW aired Christmas specials. The durable Frosty the Snowman/Frosty Returns combo on CBS led the 8pm hour in viewers and 18-49. At 10pm, ABC's 20/20 won the hour.
Saturday once again belonged to ABC as their college football coverage of Notre Dame at USC dominated the night with a preliminary 4.4 18-49 rating. NBC's airing of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull led them to second place in 18-49.

Tonight ABC Sunday returns with all-new episodes of AFV, Once Upon a Time, Revenge and 666 Park Avenue. NBC will be #1 with a huge NFL matchup between the Packers and Giants. CBS is also all-new tonight with 60 Minutes, The Amazing Race, The Good Wife and The Mentalist. No overrun for them this week, so ABC and Fox will battle for second tonight. Fox's animation block has new episodes of The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, Family Guy and The Cleveland Show. They will be helped by the NFL lead-in tonight.

As for the week (week 9), NBC will be first in 18-49 thanks to a double helping of the NFL on Thursday and Sunday. Fox could battle for second thanks to the NFL overrun tonight. ABC and CBS will look to close out the week strongly tonight with all-new episodes. As for the coming week (week 10), it will be mostly new episodes across the networks. Dancing with the Stars will crown this season's champion on Tuesday. Our pick to win the mirror ball trophy is the lovely Melissa Rycroft. Go Melissa!

Week 9 How the Sitcoms Did

Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for Week 8 -- Nov. 12-18)
  • The Simpsons (Fox) - An all-new at 8 did 5.06 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, down eight tenths in 18-49 from previous week when it was inflated because of the NFL lead-in.
  • The Cleveland Show (Fox) - A new showing at 7:30pm did 3.26 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which is not that great.
  • Bob's Burgers (Fox) 2 airings - A new episode at 8:30pm did 3.94 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, back down six tenths in 18-49 week-to-week when it was inflated by the bigger lead-in. A repeat earlier in the night only mustered 1.57 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, which is terrible.
  • Family Guy (Fox) - A new episode at 9 did 5.14 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating still below normal and down a tenth in 18-49 week-to-week.
  • American Dad! (Fox) - A new episode returned after a week off and did 4.21 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, which is OK.
Monday Sitcoms
  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - A new episode did 7.45 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, which is down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's season low. Still way down from last season.
  • Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat on a special night did 6.02 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's now canceled Partners.
  • 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - 9.74 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating is up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Solid but this show was doing better last season at 8:30. Perhaps in December when lesser competition arises?
  • Mike & Molly (CBS) - A new episode did 9.25 million and a 2.9 18-49 rating, which is solid and down just a tenth in 18-49 from previous week.
Tuesday Sitcoms
  • Raising Hope (Fox) - A new episode did 3.57 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which is OK...could be worse.
  • Ben and Kate (Fox) - A new episode did only 2.35 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating. One of the biggest renewals of the season was this show.
  • New Girl (Fox) - A new episode did a below normal 4.11 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, as this show slot is filled with comedies on other networks.
  • Go On (NBC) - A new episode did 5.97 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, beating the Fox comedy in 18-49...but this show had a bigger lead-in, so in my book, the Fox comedy did better.
  • Happy Endings (ABC) - A new episode did 4.38 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, which is not good. It needs a compatible lead-in and should go back to Wednesdays, even if it is 10pm.
  • The Mindy Project (Fox) - The dud did only 2.64 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating. What a disappointment in the ratings.
  • The New Normal (NBC) - A new episode beat the competing comedies with 4.29 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating.
  • Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 (ABC) - Only 2.99 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating for a new episode. Only thing that is good about that is that it skews very young.
Wednesday Sitcoms
  • The Middle (ABC) - preempted.
  • Whitney (NBC) - Week two saw a drop to just 3.94 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating. NBC will need to be patient with it.
  • The Neighbors (ABC) - preempted.
  • Guys with Kids (NBC) - A new episode did only 3.50 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, setting another series low.
  • Modern Family (ABC) - A repeat did 5.83 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating. This was down quite a bit from a typical repeat, but it's expected because of the holiday. It's Dunphy vs. Pritchett this week.
  • Suburgatory (ABC) - A repeat did 3.83 million and a 1.1 rating. It has a great lead-in, so there's room to grow. Thinking low 3's in the winter.
Thursday Sitcoms
  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - Two repeat airings this week. At 8pm, it did 7.11 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating. The 9pm airing garnered 7.34 million and a 2.0 rating. Not bad for Thanksgiving night against football.
  • Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat did 6.77 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating. It hit a season high last week, so it looks like it can continue to grow.
  • 2 Broke Girls(CBS) - A special repeat airing at 9:30pm did 6.14 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating.
  • 30 Rock (NBC) - preempted.
  • Up All Night (NBC) - preempted.
  • The Office (NBC) - preempted.
  • Parks & Recreation (NBC) - preempted.
Friday Sitcoms
  • Last Man Standing (ABC) - Week four did a preliminary 6.71 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, even with last week. Still solid, but could be better.
  • Malibu Country (ABC) - The fourth episode of this new comedy did a preliminary 6.43 million and a 1.4 rating, even with last week. Could be better. The talk of the revival of TGIF was a bit premature.
Saturday Sitcoms
  • None
Airing tonight (Sunday) are new episodes of Fox Animation Domination comedies from 8:00-10pm.

Summing it up. How I Met Your Mother, 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as New Girl, Go On, The New Normal) or just plain terrible (such as Ben and Kate, The Mindy Project, Happy Endings, Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23).
