Chicago Fire Finally Heads to Syndication; Peacock Picks Up New Comedy Which Takes Place at a Singing Competition

Chicago Fire

Can you believe Chicago Fire just finished its 9th season on NBC and the series still doesn't air in syndication (no cable, no local stations, etc.)? It only airs on NBC and in streaming. But now that is going to change a bit. ION Television has added Chicago Fire to its lineup, marking the first broadcast syndication deal for the long-running fan favorite series. Its agreement with NBCUniversal Global Distribution gives ION all nine seasons and 195 episodes of the popular drama from Dick Wolf's highly successful One Chicago franchise. ION will air Chicago Fire on Tuesdays beginning June 15, with episodes all day beginning at 11 a.m. ET. Chicago Fire joins sister series Chicago P.D., which is currently seen Thursdays on ION. The other Chicago series, Chicago Med, also currently doesn't air in syndication, despite it just finishing its sixth season. Meanwhile the flagship series Chicago P.D. airs in local syndication, MyNetwork TV, ION Television and on cable on USA Network & Oxygen.

Chicago Fire explores the lives, both professional and personal, of the firefighters, rescue personnel and paramedics of the Chicago Fire Department at the fictional Firehouse 51, as they risk their lives week in and week out to save and protect the citizens of their city. Executive produced by Dick Wolf and created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, Chicago Fire is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Wolf Entertainment. Over the past nine seasons, the series has starred a stellar ensemble cast, which has included Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney and Eamonn Walker, along with Kara Killmer, Miranda Rae Mayo, David Eigenberg, Joe Miñoso, Christian Stolte, Alberto Rosende, Daniel Kyri, Monica Raymund, Lauren German, Yuri Sardarov and Charlie Barnett.

ION's impressive collection of hit off-network dramas also includes Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Blue Bloods, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Hawaii Five-0, Criminal Minds and CSI: Miami, among others.

Take Note

Peacock announced the comedy series, Take Note, that follows a group of contestants from across the country competing in a fictional reality singing competition, Take Note. 10 half-hour episodes have been ordered, offering additional family and kids programming. The series will star Braelyn Rankins (Doom Patrol, Genius: Aretha) as Calvin Richards, Nadine Roden (Designated Survivor, Murdoch Mysteries) as Calvin's mom Bria Richards, Aadin Church (Broadway's Dreamgirls, Sister Act) as Calvin's dad Reggie Richards, and Sebastian Spencer (Overlord and the Underwoods) as Calvin's brother Jordan Richards. 14-year-old Calvin Richards has a wonderful, close-knit family who can survive anything as long as they're together. And good thing because Calvin was chosen to compete on a tween reality singing show - Take Note - and they're going to spend the summer navigating the crazy ups and downs of new friendships and competitions, while being thrust into the national spotlight. Take Note will introduce a new generation to Pop, R&B, Country, and Rock classics along with originals by emerging musicians written specifically for the series.

Fri-Yay: Kim's Convenience Is An Underrated Streaming Sitcom; Ted Revived as Series for Peacock

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Kim's Convenience

by Vincent

I've talked before about how I'm still waiting for another truly great streaming sitcom to pop up. We've had many very good streaming sitcoms, but it's been a while since we had a true stone cold classic. Kim's Convenience, though, is a solid candidate for just that. The series has very much flown under the radar. But I've spent the past several weeks watching the show, and while I'm bummed it will end with its current 5th season, I'm excited that a funny and charming series is available to easily stream.

Kim's Convenience is actually a Canadian sitcom, but it's shown via Netflix in the US. Similar to previously popular Canadian sitcom Corner Gas, it's a very light hearted but funny series with lovable characters. Unfortunately, apparent disagreements between producers and writers and the departure of two co-creators led to the series ending with Season 5, but don't let that stop you from giving the series a binge and enjoying its light hearted fun.

Ted

Peacock has announced a straight-to-series order for Ted, from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and MRC Television. The series is based on the hit Universal Pictures and MRC Film's Ted, the highest grossing original R-rated comedy of all time (not a sequel or based on other IP). Collectively Ted and Ted 2 grossed more than $750 million worldwide. Seth MacFarlane is in negotiations to reprise the voice of the iconic and lovable foul-mouthed teddy bear. The live-action comedy series, based on Seth MacFarlane's feature films released by Universal Pictures with MRC Film, will be executive produced by MacFarlane and Erica Huggins for Fuzzy Door. This is the second series order since MacFarlane and Fuzzy Door signed an overall development deal with UCP in 2020. Earlier this year, Peacock announced a series order of The End is Nye hosted by Bill Nye. The series is produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio and UCP, divisions of Universal Studio Group, and Fuzzy Door. Stay tuned for more info on the half-hour single-camera series version of Ted!

(Hollywood Reporter)

Fri-Yay: Happy Endings Now on Netflix, a Perfect New Comedy Binge; Remembering Arlene Golonka of Mayberry R.F.D.

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Happy Endings

by Vincent

ABC's Happy Endings is one of the biggest cult favorite sitcoms of the last decade, at least in terms of shows that were canceled far too soon. The zippy single-camera sitcom can best be described as "a faster, weirder version of Friends," and for three seasons it was a beloved factory of fast paced one liners and quotable lines, with cleverness on par with 30 Rock or The Simpsons. However, the show was canceled due to low ratings in 2013. It has lived on as a cult classic on Hulu since then, even getting namedropped in the sitcom-obsessed Marvel miniseries Wandavision a few months ago. Now, the show has the opportunity to reach an even bigger audience as it started streaming on Netflix this month.

While Hulu has expanded and quickly developed a following, there's no denying that Netflix is still the supreme streamer, and a show moved to Netflix has been proven to be able to catapult it to new heights, such as when Community bursted in popularity last year after it began streaming on Netflix, despite being available on Hulu for years. Considering Netflix's algorithm success, it shouldn't be hard for people who watched shows like Community, New Girl or Schitt's Creek - all popular Netflix shows that share DNA with Happy Endings - to discover this gem of a sitcom. Here's to hoping it's the next sitcom to explode in popularity.

Mayberry R.F.D.

Ms. Golonka was a talented, cute and bubbly actress. If you enjoy The Andy Griffith Show, the first season of Mayberry R.F.D. is worth checking out on DVD or digitally. It has some of the same Mayberry charm. Hopefully they will release the other two seasons on DVD or put them on a streaming service at some point. We thank her for the laughs and entertainment she brought us. She will be deeply missed.
