Week 29 TV Ratings and Analysis; How the Sitcoms Did

Week 29 (April 8-14) Analysis: After a huge NCAA Championship Game rating on Monday, CBS is a clear leader right now. Through the final first four night network averages, CBS is in first in HH/total viewers and also in adults 18-49. For second place in 18-49, Fox and NBC are battling, with ABC trailing. In HH/viewers, CBS has a big lead over ABC and Fox, while NBC trails in fourth. When the week is done, CBS should hang on and take the week in 18-49 again, thanks to NCAA Final Championship Game on Monday. CBS will also take total viewers for sure. More on that later. As for the previous week, week 28, CBS was first in adults 18-49 with a 2.7 rating, compared to a 1.7 for second place Fox and NBC. ABC was right behind with a 1.6. Among total viewers, it was of course CBS on top easily over second place ABC. NBC edged out Fox for third place once again.

Monday had CBS win over NBC thanks to the NCAA Championship Game. But first, ABC started with a two-hour Dancing with the Stars from 8-10pm and did 13.15 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating, which is down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Then Castle was a repeat at 10 and did 7.18 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating. A brand new episode this week and for the rest of the season. For NBC, they had the two-hour The Voice from 8-10pm that did 14.03 million and a 5.0 18-49 rating, which is up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week for a season high and great against the NCAA game. At 10pm, the third week of the Revolution return did 6.07 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week, as it is struggling since its return. CBS preempted its regular line-up of How I Met Your Mother, Rules of Engagement, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly and Hawaii Five-0 but they started with a repeat of 2 Broke Girls at 8pm and did 5.29 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating. At 8:30pm, a special repeat of The Big Bang Theory did 6.6 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which is good. At 9pm, the NCAA 17-minute pre-game did 11.78 million and a 3.6 18-49 rating, followed by the game itself from 9:17-11:51pm doing 23.43 million and a 8.4 18-49 rating. Huge. Fox aired a repeat of Bones at 8 and it did 4.28 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating. At 9pm, week twelve of new drama The Following at 9pm did 6.3 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is on par in 18-49 with previous week's series low. A little concerning, but still OK even with all of this live competition. The CW aired the finale of The Carrie Diaries at 8 and did 1.0 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating, which is up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. The CW Mondays suck, where is 7th Heaven when you need it? At 9, 90210 was preempted for a Hart of Dixie repeat that did 0.51 million and a 0.2 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week.

On Tuesday, CBS came back lower in originals, so Voice-fueled NBC took the night again. On CBS, NCIS was all-new and did 17.22 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, which is way below normal and a season low. At 9pm, a new NCIS: Los Angeles did 14.1 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, holding on to 100% of its lead-in's ratings in 18-49. Nice. At 10pm, week seven of Golden Boy did 7.89 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week's Tuesday low. On ABC, at 8pm the fourth week of Splash did 5.24 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. A bit concerning, as the NBC and Fox reality series are taking its audience. At 9pm, Dancing with the Stars: The Results did 12.13 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. A new Body of Proof aired at 10pm and did 8.98 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, which was on par in 18-49 with previous week. This show does decent in total viewers, so it has a chance of returning, but on a lower viewed night like Friday or Saturday. NBC aired the Tuesday The Voice from 8-9pm and did 13.31 million and a 4.4 18-49 rating, easily #1 in the time period but down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. At 9pm, the two-hour premiere of Eva Longoria-produced reality show Ready for Love only did 3.67 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which is horrible given the huge lead-in. Too bad. Fox started with Hell's Kitchen at 8 and did 4.53 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, down a tenth in 18-49 from previous week as this is a good option against the NBC juggernaut. At 9pm, New Girl was all-new and did 4.09 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is OK. At 9:30pm, a new The Mindy Project did 2.66 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, back up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week when it's lead-in was a repeat. The CW aired a new Hart of Dixie and did 1.2 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating. A repeat of America's Next Top Model at 9 did 0.56 million and a 0.2 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week's repeat of Beauty & the Beast.

Wednesday it was Fox with the win over ABC and CBS thanks to American Idol, as it airs two-hours every Wednesday and Fox only programs 2 hours a night. But first, CBS started the night off with a new Survivor: Caramoan at 8 doing 9.38 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Criminal Minds was all-new at 9 and did 11.47 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, which is up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. At 10pm, a new CSI did 11.11 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, up a solid three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. ABC kicked off the night with a new The Middle doing 7.55 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. At 8:30pm the new time for Suburgatory did 5.6 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, also on par in 18-49 with previous week. 2-episode season finale is this week, from 8-9pm. We saw it, and it is GREAT. Look for our review Wednesday. At 9pm, a hilarious Modern Family did the best of the block with 10.38 million and a 3.8 18-49 rating, but down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week. The second episode of How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) followed at 9:30pm with a solid 7.33 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, also down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week's premiere. Solid. And the best episode yet is this Wednesday, it's a riot...look for our review this Wednesday. At 10pm, Nashville was new and did 5.96 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week and good for second in the hour. On Fox, a two-hour American Idol did a solid 12.23 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. Onto NBC a new Dateline started it off at 8pm with 5.2 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, which was down two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Law & Order: SVU followed at 9pm with a repeat that did 3.77 million and only a 0.9 18-49 rating. At 10pm, Chicago Fire was preempted for an encore of the Hannibal pilot and did 3.14 million and a 1.0 18-49 rating, which is just more sampling. The CW aired a repeat of new hit Arrow and did 1.56 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating. At 9pm, a repeat of Supernatural did 1.14 million and a 0.4 18-49 rating, skewing very young and younger than its lead-in again.

On Thursday, it was Fox with the win as CBS and ABC were in repeats (primarily). Starting with ABC, a new Wife Swap aired and did 4.54 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week. At 9pm, Grey's Anatomy was a repeat and did 4.51 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, better than its usual repeat ratings. At 10pm, ABC aired a repeat of TV's #1 show at 10pm Scandal doing 3.53 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating. New episodes return April 25. CBS aired repeats, as at 8pm The Big Bang Theory repeat did the best of course with 11.44 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating. Two and a Half Men followed with a repeat at 8:30pm with a good outing with 8.29 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. At 9, Person of Interest was a repeat and did 10.11 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating. Elementary rounded out the night with a repeat doing 7.32 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating. Fox had American Idol from 8-9pm and did 13.19 million and a 3.2 18-49 rating, which was up three tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Glee returned at 9 and did 6.67 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, better than normal. NBC aired new episodes of its comedies, as a new Community did 2.84 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, which is very bad but up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. Parks & Recreation was new too and did 3.15 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, on par with previous week in 18-49. A new The Office was next and did only 3.83 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, which is up a tenth in 18-59 week-to-week. At 9:30pm, the season finale of Go On did only 2.67 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 week-to-week but not good for Matthew Perry and company. At 10pm, NBC aired week two of new drama Hannibal doing 4.38 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week's premiere. Good, but it faced repeats. True test will come April 25. The CW's big gun Vampire Diaries aired at 8 and was a repeat doing 0.85 million and a 0.3 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. At 9, Beauty and the Beast was also a repeat and did 0.88 million and a 0.3 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week.

Now, final numbers for Friday and Saturday are not available, but CBS and ABC were tied for #1 in 18-49. CBS won 8pm with a new Undercover Boss though, beating second place Happy Endings on ABC, which even when it was down a lot from the previous week. Kitchen Nightmares was a repeat for Fox and tied an all-new Fashion Star on NBC. ABC was way back up at 9pm with a repeat of Shark Tank easily beating a repeat of Grimm on NBC, and an all-new Vegas on CBS. At 10, Rock Center was last place again for NBC, losing to 20/20 on ABC, which was #1 for the night, and second place Blue Bloods on CBS. Fox preempted Touch at 9.
Saturday had Fox win the night with NASCAR coverage. ABC, NBC, and CBS were all low. Fox preempted Cops and a repeat of The Following. NBC settled for a new Smash at 8pm that was dead last. At 9pm, a repeat of The Voice was tied for third and a repeat of SNL at 10 grew from it for second place. ABC aired the two-episode premiere of Bet On Your Baby which was third place, while a repeat of Body of Proof was last at 10. CBS took the 10pm hour with 48 Hours and was in second with a repeat of it.

Tonight ABC Sunday is primarily in repeats from 7-11pm. AFV, then an all-new special clip show of Once Upon a Time, an enhanced repeat of Revenge and a repeat of Red Widow. I think it will be a fourth place finish for ABC. NBC devotes the night to The Voice repeats from 7-9pm, which could do OK then a new Celebrity Apprentice: All-Stars from 9-11. NBC will likely finish in second. CBS has 60 Minutes at 7, followed by new episodes of Amazing Race, The Good Wife & The Mentalist, which will likely be a third place finish (or second battling with NBC). Fox's animation block is in all-new from 7:30-10pm, and could take this slow night.

As for the week (week 29), CBS will take the week in 18-49 over Fox because of the great NCAA Championship Game. Fox will likely be in second in 18-49, followed by NBC and ABC close behind. For total viewers, CBS will remain first. ABC should be second again, followed by NBC. And Fox in a competitive fourth. As for the coming week (week 30), The CW launches the season premiere of Oh Sit! tomorrow at 8. The pick of the week is the 2-episode Suburgatory season finale on Wednesday, April 17 at a special time from 8-9pm on ABC. It's so good. And finally, Parks & Recreation will have two all-new episodes on Thursday from 9-10pm on NBC, as it returns to the 9:30pm timeslot for the rest of the season.

Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for Week 28 -- April 1-7)

The Simpsons (Fox) - A repeat episode at 8 did 3.24 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week.
The Cleveland Show (Fox) 2 airings - Its normal time of 7:30pm was a repeat and did 1.99 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week. There was an all-new episode at 9:30pm following repeats that did 3.38 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, which lost steam from its lead-in, which was a repeat.
Bob's Burgers (Fox) - The 8:30 airing was a repeat and did 2.99 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating, up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week and held all of is lead-in's ratings. A repeat at 7pm did only 1.74 million and just a 0.7 18-49 rating, but up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week.
Family Guy (Fox) - A repeat at 9 did 3.58 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which was up four tenths in 18-49 week-to-week.
American Dad! (Fox) - preempted.

2 Broke Girls (CBS) - An encore episode at a special time of 8pm ET did 5.29 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which was a tad better than its 9pm repeat the previous week.
The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A special repeat at 8:30pm ET did 6.6 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. Such rewatchability for this show.

New Girl (Fox) - A new episode did 4.09 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which is decent but could be better for this show. It skews so young, though.
The Mindy Project (Fox) - A new episode did 2.66 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, which is back up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week when its lead-in was a repeat.

Wednesday Sitcoms

The Middle (ABC) - A new airing at 8 did 7.55 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which is on par in 18-49 with previous week. Solid as always.
Suburgatory (ABC) - A new episode at 8:30pm did 5.6 million and a 1.8 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week as well. A great 2-episode finale is this week!
Modern Family (ABC) - A new episode at 9 did 10.38 million and a 3.8 18-49 rating, which is down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week but still easily #1 for the night.
How To Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) (ABC) - A new episode at 9:30pm did 7.33 million and a 2.5 18-49 rating, which is also down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week. The best episode yet is this Wednesday: Academy Awards Party!

Thursday Sitcoms

The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A repeat posted 11.44 million and a 3.0 18-49 rating, which is above normal for a repeat airing.
Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat episode followed with 8.29 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which is solid for a repeat.
Community (NBC) - A new episode did just 2.84 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating and it was up two tenths in 18-49 from previous week. I don't think NBC will bring it back. Perhaps Comedy Central?
Parks & Recreation (NBC) - A new episode built from its lead-in again with 3.15 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, on par in 18-49 with previous week.
The Office (NBC) - A new airing at 9 did just 3.83 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, up a tenth in 18-49 from previous week but still low.
Go On (NBC) - The season finale did only 2.67 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, which is on par in 18-49 with previous week but still way too low. Not a good sign.

Friday Sitcoms

Happy Endings (ABC) 2 airings - Week three in this hour did a prelim 2.76 million and a prelim 0.8 18-49 rating at 8, down three tenths in 18-49 from previous week's prelim. The second airing at 8:30 did a prelim 2.10 million and a prelim 0.6 18-49 rating, down four tenths in 18-49 from previous week's prelim. Nielsen is so screwy.

Saturday Sitcoms

None.

Airing tonight (Sunday) are new episodes of Fox Animation Domination comedies from 7:30-10pm, following an encore at 7.

Summing it up. Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, How To Live With Your Parents, were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as The Middle, New Girl) or just plain terrible (such as Go On, Happy Endings).
