Laff Acquires Matthew Perry and Will Arnett Sitcoms; Lisa Whelchel Returns for MeTV Series

The Odd Couple

Laff has acquired two recent sitcoms. The Odd Couple revival starring Matthew Perry and The Millers starring Will Arnett will air Monday-Saturday starting today (March 4). Both sitcoms will air back-to-back in the 11AM hour. The Odd Couple aired for three seasons on CBS from 2015-17 and starred Matthew Perry as endearing slob Oscar Madison and Thomas Lennon as uptight neat freak Felix Unger, two former college buddies who become unlikely roommates after the demise of their marriages. It's not long after Oscar lets Felix move in that Oscar fears he's made a monumental mistake. However, despite how exasperated they make each other, these mismatched friends agree they can help each other move on from their divorces and somehow make this crazy living arrangement work. The Millers aired for two seasons on CBS from 2013-15 and starred Will Arnett as Nathan Miller, a recently divorced local roving news reporter looking forward to living the singles' life until his parents' marital problems unexpectedly derail his plans.

Younger Grows on TV Land; The Millers, The McCarthys on CBS in July

Younger

TV Land's critically acclaimed Younger from TV icon Darren Star was a runaway hit with audiences in its freshman season. The series, which stars Sutton Foster as Liza, a 40-year-old woman trying to reinvent her career and love life by posing as 26, marked the largest in-season growth of a TV Land original series ever among the network's target demo of Adults 25-54 (+82%) and Women 25-54 (+135%) from premiere to finale (L+3), and scored triple-digit gains versus the network's prime time average with Women 25-54 (+135%), 18-49 (+162%) and 18-34 (+180%) in Live +3. Younger is executive produced and created for television by Darren Star, the entertainment powerhouse behind Sex and the City, Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place, who also writes and directs for the series. The show stars two-time Tony(R) Award winner Sutton Foster (Bunheads), superstar Hilary Duff (Lizzie McGuire), Debi Mazar (Entourage), Miriam Shor (GCB) and Nico Tortorella (The Following). The series was recently renewed for a 12-episode second season, which is slated to premiere in January 2016.

Pop Launches Jan. 14, 2015 with 90210, Melrose Place; Mike & Molly Returns Monday, Dec. 8 on CBS

Pop

TVGN announced that it will rebrand as Pop across its distribution of 80 million homes on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015. The CBS/Lionsgate joint venture, currently known as TVGN, will embrace a new on-air look and creative design to accompany its new brand promise - celebrating the fun of being a fan, as we previously announced. Among the original series will be The Story Behind, airing Wednesdays at 8:30pm. The Story Behind features new episodes that go behind-the-scenes of TV's greatest hits and most iconic shows, and how they got their start. The series reveals stories straight from the set with exclusive on-camera interviews with all the insider players from cast members to producers to television executives. The one-hour episodes will highlight some of TV's most treasured classics, including Everybody Loves Raymond, Home Improvement, Beverly Hills 90210, Will & Grace, Full House, Friends and ER. The Story Behind will be a Pop Media Group production and will begin with The Story Behind: Everybody Loves Raymond on Jan. 14.

Also, docu-sitcom Unusually Thicke returns for a second season this spring 2015 starring Alan Thicke. Not even seven seasons as Dr. Jason Seaver on Growing Pains could prepare Alan Thicke to be the patriarch of his own modern family. Between his fiery, much younger Latina wife, Tanya, and his three sons - teenaged know-it-all Carter, pop star Robin and marijuana dispensary owner Brennan - Alan Thicke has his work cut out for him as a father, a husband and a Hollywood actor, writer and icon. Unusually Thicke follows the hilarious, action-packed and dramatic daily lives of Alan's real-life family. Dozens of celebrity appearances have been featured in the series, including David Hasselhoff, Bob Saget, Magic Johnson, Wayne Gretzky, John Stamos, Bill Maher and Tom Green, with many more to come. Unusually Thicke is an original series that blends reality television with situation comedy, and is produced by Peacock Alley Entertainment.

Pop will also have its own sitcom, Schitt's Creek, premiering Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 at 10:00 PM, ET/PT. Starring the incomparable Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, the character-driven comedy series (created by and starring Eugene Levy and his son Daniel) will become the first original scripted project in the history of the network. Thirteen half-hour episodes will star Emmy winners(R) Eugene Levy (American Pie, Best In Show, SCTV) and Catherine O'Hara (Home Alone, Best In Show, SCTV) and Chris Elliott (How I Met Your Mother, Late Show With David Letterman, There's Something About Mary) alongside Daniel Levy (Admission) and Annie Murphy (Blue Mountain State). The series centers on filthy rich video store magnate Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy), his soap star wife Moira (Catherine O'Hara), and their two kids, über-hipster son David (Daniel Levy) and socialite daughter Alexis (Annie Murphy), after they suddenly find themselves broke. They are forced to live in Schitt's Creek, a depressing small town they once bought as a joke. And finally, what about the network's reruns like Family Ties, The Love Boat and more? No word yet on the full weekday schedule, but the #Throwback programming lineup will continue. The new 90210 will begin airing Monday, Jan. 19, 2015 at 4:00 PM, ET/PT with the original two-hour pilot, and beginning Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015, the series will air at its regularly scheduled time slot of Monday through Friday at 5:00 PM, ET/PT. The original Beverly Hills, 90210 will continue to air marathons Tuesdays at 12:00 PM, ET/PT. But that's not all! The original Melrose Place will join the line-up and air weekly beginning Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 at 12:00 PM, ET/PT. Stay with us for continued updates on the #Throwback block as we get closer to January.92

SitcomsOnline Digest: The Millers Gets the Axe; Dharma & Greg Returns to DVD; New Carol Burnett DVDs of Early Years

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we've got news of a sort of surprising (though not completely) cancellation of a series that CBS brought back for a second season, news of Dharma & Greg finally returning to DVD, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • The Millers was successful enough to make it to a second season on CBS, but now "Miller time" is over, as ratings early into that second season have made it become an early casualty in the second season, as CBS has canceled it. (A.V. Club
  • Meanwhile at CBS, The McCarthys (which has also been struggling) has been given an order for two additional scripts, signaling that the network isn't throwing in the towel just yet on the series. (Deadline)
  • If you're having trouble keeping up with all of the big films that are currently under consideration to be made as TV series, Deadline has a summary of 15 of them. (Deadline)
  • Glen A. Larson, television producer best known for series such as Quincy, M.E., Magnum P.I., The Fall Guy, and Knight Rider, has died at the age of 77. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Actress Carol Ann Susi, who played the voice of Mrs. Wolowitz on The Big Bang Theory (and appeared in numerous other sitcoms) has died at the age of 66. (SitcomsOnline)
  • Charlie Sheen is no longer winning, as his show Anger Management has been canceled after 100 episodes. (SitcomsOnline)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Fox dropped an unanticipated MOD release on DVD this week with their release of Dharma & Greg - The Complete Season Two.
  • The Carol Burnett Show has been released on DVD, and there have been many great releases of the series... but all throughout, one thing that has been missing is episodes from the first five seasons of the series. Now, it appears that some of those episodes are going to be released.

Claim to Fame: Most people know who Damon Wayans is, but forget that he got his start on TV in the 1985-1986 season of the NBC series Saturday Night Live. He was one of the feature performers on that season, but ended up getting fired for going off-script. He was far from done with sketch comedy, though, as he had his own sketch comedy series later on with In Living Color, a series to which he brought several members of his own family. He left that series after the third season following some disputes with Fox. His next move was to play the father in a family sitcom, which he did on ABC's My Wife and Kids. That series lasted for five seasons. He doesn't do quite as much acting these days, but somebody who does continue in his acting tradition is his son Damon Wayans Jr., who has already started an acting career for himself.

CBS will air two episodes on Saturday, July 5 from 8-9pm. CBS will likely air the other six this summer as well, perhaps July 12, 19 and 26. SitcomsOnline Digest: New Episodes of Community to Hulu?; Releases of Current Sitcoms on DVD

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we've got yet another update on the on-again/off-again story of a new season of Community, news of new DVDs of current series, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • Six seasons and a movie? It seems like a real possibility that Hulu could at least make that sixth season part true if they do in fact pick up new episodes of Community, which seems to be a real possibility. (Deadline)
  • NBC's head of comedy development, Tal Rabinowitz, is leaving the network, which also means that comedy and drama development will be merged into one division. The only question that hasn't quite been answered is how this will affect the future of sitcoms at NBC, as the network hasn't had much success in this area lately. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • The cast of The Wonder Years reunited this week in preparation for the upcoming DVD release of the series, and it seems that everybody is talking about that reunion more than they are about the DVDs. (NY Daily News)
  • Despite Jay Leno actually coming to the show to announce that it had been renewed for a second season, it turns out that Arsenio Hall's latest venture into late night talk show has, in fact, been canceled and will not return for a second season. And, no, Jay Leno will not be taking his place. (LA Times)
  • A trio of new shows is coming to Nick at Nite over the next few months, including Everybody Loves Raymond, How I Met Your Mother, and the return of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. (SitcomsOnline)

SitcomsOnline Digest: A Complete Look at Fall 2014; Sean Saves the World and The Millers on DVD

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we've got a complete look of what will be happening this fall, more on the future of two series that didn't make the cut, news of DVD releases of two sitcoms from the current season, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • Fall 2014 schedules have been announced for all of the networks, and with the new season, Sunday nights are no longer "animation dominated" on Fox, Mondays will be a little less funny on CBS, ABC has given Shonda Rhimes her own night on Thursday, and NBC and The CW are just hoping that somebody will watch any night of the week. If it's all confusing, The Washington Post has a complete summary of everything. (Washington Post)
  • How I Met Your Dad was one of the most talked about pilots for the new fall season. As it turns out, wasn't even picked up, but the producers are still trying to find a network that would be interested in it. (E! Online)
  • The Wire has a more critical look at some of the new fall series, ranked based upon how many episodes that they predict each series will last. If their predictions hold up, we'll see about two weeks of ABC's Manhattan Love Story, and of course, NCIS: New Orleans will last "until the end of time." (The Wire)
  • There has been talk that Community may not necessarily be over now that NBC has cancelled it, but creator Dan Harmon thinks that it is unlikely that it'll be revived. (Deadline)
  • Les Moonves says that there have been no discussions with Joel McHale to take over for Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show, but that doesn't mean that some people (namely, Moonves' own wife, Julie Chen) don't like to stir up rumors anyway. (Deadline)
  • On New Years Eve, ABC has Ryan Seacrest (and previously Dick Clark) and NBC has Carson Daly, broadcasting from New York City. For some reason, Fox has decided that they want to try something totally different with Pitbull, broadcasting from Miami. (Hollywood Reporter)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sometimes, shows become so obscure that we forget about them very quickly, and that seems to have happened with the now cancelled NBC series Sean Saves the World. This week, TVShowsOnDVD.com discovered that Sean Saves the World - Season One is actually on DVD, and has been for over a month, as a MOD offering.
  • A much more successful series from the past season (i.e. one that will actually be back in the fall) is the CBS series, The Millers. On August 19, CBS DVD will be releasing The Milers - Season One.

  • The Andy Griffith Show - Season 1 (Blu-ray): The classic TV series debuts on Blu-ray with the best quality it has ever seen, along with some nice special features.
  • I Love Lucy - Ultimate Season 1 (Blu-ray): In what could perhaps be described as one of the best home media releases ever, the queen of comedy returns in a release that is even better than the DVD releases, and includes new special features and even includes every episode with all original commercials.

TV Land Orders Community-style Sitcom Pilot Called Teachers; CBS 2014 Season Finale Dates

TV Land

TV Land has given a pilot order to Teachers, based on the popular web series of the same name. The show revolves around six elementary school teachers who are trying to mold the minds and lives of America's youth, but they don't really seem to have their own lives together at all. From making their class help them stalk exes online to altering a grade because the art teacher is "kind of a b****," these teachers are certainly changing the world, one student at a time. Alison Brie (Community) is attached as an executive producer, and the stars of the web series, all named a version of "Katie" - Caitlin Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O'Brien and Katie Thomas - are all signed on to reprise their roles.

Barlow, Colloton, Freedman, Lambert, O'Brien and Thomas, who call their group The Katydids, are all from Chicago with experience at The Second City, The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York and iO West in Los Angeles. Their web series, Teachers, can be watched at TeachersWebSeries.com. Matt Miller (Chuck, Las Vegas) and Cap Gun TV are executive producers alongside Brie, and Jones and Keith Cox will serve as executive producers for TV Land. This is just a pilot order, so stay with us if TV Land decides to order this pilot to series.

The Soul Man

Viacom networks TV Land, BET and CENTRIC have announced that they will simulcast the LIVE season three premiere of TV Land's original sitcom The Soul Man on Wednesday, March 26 at 10:30pm ET/PT. CENTRIC will also showcase the series beginning in April by running marathons of the first two seasons. While learning to adjust to their new humble life, they have plenty of obstacles in their way. One of these is Boyce's brother Stamps (Wesley Jonathan), who seems to have taken up permanent residence in their house - and that's only made worse when Stamps sparks a new relationship with Lolli's sister (Kellee Stewart). Eight episodes have been ordered for the third season.

The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory, which is TV's most-watched comedy and the top-rated broadcast entertainment show among adults 18-49, has been renewed for an additional three years, extending it through the 2016-2017 season. There are other series that still could be picked-up for next season, like The Crazy Ones, but no word yet and we probably won't know until the upfront in May. Stay tuned!

CBS Picks Up 3 Freshman Sitcoms; NBC Cancels Welcome to the Family, Slots Community Return

The Crazy Ones

CBS has picked up three freshman sitcoms to full seasons. They have given the "back nine" orders to The Crazy Ones, The Millers and Mom. We mentioned that the fourth CBS freshman comedy We Are Men was already canceled. All three of these series haven't been big mass hits but they have done solidly, especially The Millers coming out of a huge lead-in from The Big Bang Theory on Thursdays. The other two haven't been as successful in adults 18-49, though The Crazy Ones had a big series premiere. That series airs Thursdays at 9pm and stars Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar, James Wolk, Hamish Linklater and Amanda Setton. The Millers airs Thursdays at 8:30pm and stars Will Arnett, Beau Bridges, Margo Martindale, Jayma Mays, J.B. Smoove, Nelson Franklin and Eve Moon, while Mom, from Chuck Lorre, airs Mondays at 9:30pm and stars Anna Faris, Allison Janney, Nate Corddry, Matt Jones, Sadie Calvano, Blake Garrett Rosenthal, Spencer Daniels and French Stewart. Stay with us for continued updates, as CBS hasn't announced the fate of Monday freshman drama Hostages yet.

Community

NBC has canceled two fall series: Thursday comedy Welcome to the Family effective immediately and Wednesday drama Ironside starting Oct. 30. As a result, NBC will eventually replace these series with the debut of Dick Wolf's Chicago P.D. (the spin-off of Chicago Fire) at 10pm on Wednesday, Jan. 8, as well as the season premiere of Community with back-to-back episodes from 8-9pm Thursday, Jan. 2. Community then settles into its 8pm half-hour on Jan. 9 followed by Parks and Recreation at 8:30. The Jan. 9 episode will be the show's 100th and was co-written by Amy Poehler and Mike Schur.

In the short-term, replacing Ironside in the 10pm Wednesday time slot for November and December will be a string of original programming, including new episodes of Dateline crime stories, Saturday Night Live holiday-themed specials and holiday music specials starring Kelly Clarkson and Michael Buble. On Wednesday, Oct. 30 a rerun of Law & Order: SVU will air. NBC on Thursday nights from 8-9pm for the remainder of the fall will change due to Welcome to the Family being pulled. It will include two weeks of original back-to-back Parks and Recreation episodes (Nov. 14 and 21), specials such as SNL Halloween, plus a previously-announced edition of The Voice on Nov. 7 and The Sound of Music Live! broadcast on Dec. 5. In addition, The Sing-Off moves into the time period in December for two weeks on Dec. 12 and 19. This Thursday (Oct. 24), a rerun of The Voice will air in the hour. Stay with us for continued updates, as NBC hasn't made any decisions yet on freshman comedy Sean Saves the World, while new drama Dracula premieres this Friday (Oct. 25).

CBS Fall Pilot Review: The Millers - Premieres October 3; NBC Fall Pilot Review: Welcome to the Family - Premieres October 3

Super Fun Night

The Millers - Thursdays at 8:30PM ET/PT on CBS
Premieres Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 8:30PM ET/PT

by Skees

Nathan Miller (Will Arnett) is a rising news journalist who just so happens to have just ended his marriage and is adjusting to the single life, but he won't have a whole lot of adjusting to do when a new lady moves in with him. Unfortunately, that new lady is his mother, Carol (Margo Martindale), and she is being forced to adjust to a new life too as Nathan's divorce makes his father, Tom (Beau Bridges) realize that leaving his wife could actually be fun. In the CBS sitcom The Millers, it is all about getting along and making the best of the situation.

Cast Details:
Will Arnett as Nathan Miller
Beau Bridges as Tom Miller
Margo Martindale as Carol Miller
J.B. Smoove as Ray
Jayma Mays as Debbie
Nelson Franklin as Adam
Eve Moon as Mikayla

Will Arnett (Nathan Miller) is a Canadian born comedian who is best known for his work in sitcoms including Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Running Wilde, and most recently Up All Night. He has also had many roles in films, including RV, Blades of Glory, and Semi-Pro.

Beau Bridges (Tom Miller) is a well-known American actor who was born into show-business as the son of legendary actor Lloyd Bridges. Beau Bridges, in fact, had his first acting role at the age of seven in an uncredited role in the form Force of Evil, and made his sitcom debut in 1960 in the sitcom My Three Sons. In more recent years, he has appeared in series including The Agency, Stargate SG-1, and My Name is Earl, along with guest starring roles among several series.

Margo Martindale (Carol Miller) is an American film, stage, and television actress best known for her supporting roles in films including The Hours, Million Dollar Baby, and Lorenzo's Oil. Making her debut in 1980s at the Actors Theater of Louisville, she went on to supporting roles in movies as well as roles in TV series, including The Riches, Justified, Mercy, and A Gifted Man.

J.B. Smoove (Ray) is a stand-up comedian who got his start on Def Comedy Jam. He has had roles in series including Curb Your Enthusiasm, Til Death and Everybody Hates Chris. He has also appeared in films including Date Night, Mr. Deeds, and The Dictator.

Jayma Mays (Debbie) made her debut in the series Joey, and since then, she has most notably appeared in the role of Emma Pillsbury in the series Glee. Other credits include multiple episodes of Heroes and Ugly Betty.

Nelson Franklin (Adam) is perhaps best known for his short stint on The Office as Nick, the "graphic design guy," but he previously starred in the short-lived Fox series Traffic Light (which, coincidentally, served as a replacement for Will Arnett's Running Wilde). More recently, he has appeared in a few episodes of the Fox series New Girl.

Eve Moon (Mikayla) is a child actress who makes her TV series debut in this series. She has previously had a career in commercials, appearing in spots for products including Kraft Cheese, Eggo Waffles, and Humana.

Pilot Plot:

In the pilot, we meet Nathan Miller (Will Arnett), a rising news journalist who just went through a divorce. Everybody is aware of the divorce, except his own parents, the constantly befuddled father Tom (Beau Bridges) and overbearing mother Carol (Margo Martindale). As it turns out, a mishap at Tom and Carol's home (thanks to Tom) leaves their basement flooded, and they're about to head in to town to stay with Nathan's sister Debbie (Jayma Mays) and her husband Adam (Nelson Franklin).

Things do not go quite as planned, however. Upon arriving in town, Carol quickly gets into an argument with Debbie over some home-decorating disagreements and Tom and Carol end up at Nathan's home, which forces him to reveal the reason why his wife isn't there. Unfortunately for Carol, the news of this divorce gives Tom the idea that maybe it is time for him to let go of his wife as well, which lands him in the home of Debbie and Adam, while Nathan is stuck with his mother... with no end in sight.

Analysis:

Once again, CBS has given us another sitcom with proven stars (particularly Will Arnett and Beau Bridges) with a sitcom veteran (Greg Garcia) behind it. However, unlike a lot of the other sitcoms out there that we have seen filled with stars this season, this one is pretty decent, although maybe a bit short on laughs (at least so far). The pilot was enjoyable to watch, and had a plot that gave a good introduction to the characters and the background without being too boring.

There weren't a whole lot of laugh out loud funny moments in the pilot, although there was one great moment at the end where Nathan is having a party while his mother is upstairs sleeping... or at least until she comes down in her night gown. Reminding him of his wedding, where she insisted that he do some "dirty dancing" with his bride to the song "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life," she believes that his party would be "livened up" a bit if he relives that moment in his own living room. Nathan, being the good son that he is, lets her have that moment, and it certainly gets a little weird.

One thing that I'm not so sure about with this series is the casting of J.B. Smoove in the role of Ray, Nathan's coworker and friend who seems to always be there for... everything. I feel that the producers probably do have something in mind for his role to make him a character with more dimension on the series, but from what I saw in the pilot, he just seemed to be there to comment on anything and everything, with no real reason for always being there (in other words, I feel that it needs to be explained a bit better why he is part of Nathan's home life and personal life) and with no real problems that he is dealing with on his own. It remains to be seen if they can expand his character and explain why he is around as often as he does.

Conclusion:

This isn't a bad show, and I could see it having some room for growth without making a whole lot of changes. It seems to be a good fit for the CBS lineup of sitcoms and is very much similar to the style of sitcom that we see there. While it could use a few tweaks here and there, it is still a sitcom that is decent to watch and very much workable. It also helps that it is airing right after The Big Bang Theory, as that series is about the best lead-in that a sitcom could possible have. I think, though, that having the bigger name stars could work against it. Having those bigger names, even if they aren't all that huge, means that the show really does have a higher standard to be successful, because better known actors can't afford to stick around in a series if anything better comes along. I'm hopeful that this series can survive, and I'm hopeful that we'll see a lot of good things come from it. This is certainly a show that sitcom fans should take a look into.

Final Numbers (out of 5 stars):

Watchability: 4/5
Funniness: 3.5/5
Overall: 4/5

"Pilot" (airs Thursday, October 3 at 8:30 PM ET/PT)

Dan and Caroline's daughter has just graduated high school, and they're ready to send her off to college and start focusing on themselves again. Molly's boyfriend, Junior, is graduating from his high school with top honors and has plans to go to Stanford, to the high pride of his parents. Everything seems like it is falling into place for all but unbeknownst to both of the families, Molly and Junior are about to become parents themselves. Once the teens break the big news, these two very different families are suddenly thrown together, which goes anything but smoothly.

Analysis:

When I first read the logline for Welcome to the Family when NBC picked it up in May, I remember groaning. Really? A sitcom about the culture clash when a Hispanic and a Caucasian family are forced to meet? We're really doing sitcoms about this? In 2013? It seemed to invite all of the worst possible stereotypes, and I immediately braced myself for yet another sitcom that gets all of its "laughs" from cheap shock humor and "satirical" racism. Because one 2 Broke Girls just isn't enough, apparently. But when I watched the pilot, I was pleased that it subverted my expectations. The cheap humor I feared was almost completely absent, and most of the characters managed to resist the easy stereotypes the show could've easily pinned them as. If absolutely nothing else, Welcome to the Family wasn't the racist mess it easily could've been.

Honestly, though...that's about the only nice thing I can say about it. It's not racist! Yay! But it's really boring, and feels kind of empty, which is strange for a show dealing with topics as potentially heavy as this one. I think it feels empty because the characters are so weak – in fact, they're hardly characters at all as much as they are stock personalities. Nothing about them feels natural – Mike O'Malley's character is an old-fashioned type, blue-collar dad, because of course he is. His wife is his level-headed and supportive companion, because that's what TV wives are supposed to be. His daughter is ditzy, and oh, she's also a raging feminist, because why not? That's a personality quirk that characters have sometimes. Why is she a feminist? Well, that would require some deep digging that Welcome to the Family doesn't seem capable of or even interested in doing. Junior and his family aren't much better – he's an Ivy Leauge-bound brainiac and his dad is a tough-minded macho man and his wife is his level-headed and supportive companion...hey, that sounds familiar, doesn't it? Everything here just feels so overly calculated, from the characters to the paint-by-numbers plot even to the painfully generic "quirky!" music cues that the show places in between scenes. The only thing that isn't calculated is the jokes – because there's none of them. I didn't laugh once, and I'd struggle to identify points where I was even supposed to be laughing. The show feels a little bit like a script that was supposed to get punched up by a writers' room, but never actually made it to that stage.

True, lots of sitcom pilots have stock characters and generic plots, and most aren't very funny. But most sitcom pilots - the ones worth a damn, anyway – have at least a suggestion of a purpose, of something there beneath the surface. What makes me so unconfident that Welcome to the Family will overcome its issues and turn into anything worthwhile is the fact that it feels like there's nothing beneath its overly generic surface at all.

Conclusion:

The best thing I can say about this show is that it's not as terrible as I thought it'd be going in. Or at least, it's not the same kind of terrible I thought it'd be going in. If you're afraid this show is going to be the cloying racism-fest its premise suggests it might be, then you'll be relieved to know that it's not that at all. But it is really boring, with painfully generic stock characters and a premise it doesn't seem to know how to deal with. There's an interesting sitcom to be made about teen pregnancy, and even an interesting sitcom to be made out of the cultural identities that are occasionally hinted at here, but Welcome to the Family would rather just coast along in its blandness, never allowing itself to be anything more than a sitcom that's as safe and generic as they come.

Final Numbers (out of 5 stars):

Watchability: 2.5/5
Funniness: 1.5/5
Overall: 2/5

MTV2 Adds Family Matters; CBS Sitcoms Free Frozen Yogurt Promotion at Yogurtland

    Family Matters

Viacom-owned MTV2 has quietly added Family Matters to its line-up as of last week. The sitcom is still airing on BET, which is also owned by Viacom. Family Matters is airing most weeknights from 2-4am in the late night, while BET is airing the series in the mornings/early afternoons. The hit '90s sitcom will join other '90s favorites such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Saved by the Bell, Boy Meets World, Martin, The Wayans Bros., In Living Color and Smart Guy. Most of these air regularly on weekdays, such as Sabrina weekdays from 9am-12pm and Saved by the Bell from 12-2pm. Martin airs in the late night from 12-2am, while In Living Color, The Wayans Bros. and Smart Guy are on weekends mainly. The network also airs The PJ's from time to time, while Living Single has been removed.

The series of course is about The Winslows, a middle-class suburban Chicago black family may seem like a normal family but with the additions of a sister, her son, Carl's mother and one nerdy neighbor there is never a dull moment in this household. Stay with us for continued updates and to see if MTV2 will be adding anything else later this fall?

USA Network Fall 2013 Schedule with Modern Family, NCIS: LA; TCA Summer 2013 Press Tour: CBS

    Modern Family

We continue our look at the fall 2013 cable and digital TV schedules today with USA Network. Of course their big acquisition is Modern Family, but they also have NCIS: LA coming as more than just repurpose plays. We of course announced both sometime back (Modern Family back in 2010 and NCIS: LA back in 2010). At the 2013 USA Network upfront, the premiere date and time was announced for Modern Family reruns on USA (Sept. 24 8|7c), but we have the complete information now. It will actually launch on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 8-11pm with a mini-marathon. Modern Family will air regularly back-to-back in primetime during the 8pm hour every Tuesday-Friday, with the Tuesday episodes extended through full primetime until 11pm and Friday episodes extended to 10pm. On Sundays, Modern Family will air in a block from 9-11pm. To get ready for Modern Family on USA, the network will air "Modern Family" NCIS and Law & Order: SVU marathons on Saturday, Sept. 7 and Sunday, Sept. 8. On Sunday, Sept. 29 from 4-9pm, Law & Order: SVU episodes featuring guest appearances by Modern Family stars like Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell & Sarah Hyland, will lead into the regular Sunday stack of Modern Family. And just like The Middle ABC Family update yesterday, Modern Family will also premiere on local broadcast syndication this fall. It will premiere Sept. 23, so check your local listings (in NYC it will be on WNYW).

On to NCIS: Los Angeles, the regular plays begin the week of Sept. 23 and it will air regularly Mondays, Wednesdays-Fridays at 5pm & 7pm, along with a block on Wednesdays in primetime from 9pm-11pm and on Thursdays at 11pm. There will also be plenty of "launch marathons" for the series on Monday, Sept. 23 from 6am-8pm and then 11:05pm-2:05am following WWE Raw. There will also be marathons on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 6am-6pm & 9pm-4am and also on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9am-2am. Other series USA Network airs includes Law & Order: SVU, NCIS, House and filler airings of Cheers. After Sept. 20 there is no sign of Law & Order: Criminal Intent on the schedule, but that could return in October. Like ABC Family's fall schedule, the original primetime series will all be over before the new reruns start. Burn Notice will have its series finale on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 9pm leading into the season finale of Graceland at 10pm. Royal Pains will have its season ender on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 9pm. And finally, the Tuesday series will have their mid-season finales on Tuesday, Sept. 17 with Covert Affairs at 9 and Suits at 10. The back 6 episodes will return in fourth quarter (Covert Affairs) and January (Suits), but the dates and times are not announced yet. And finally, movie wise, the network television premiere of Bridesmaids (2011) will be on USA Network. The film starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rebel Wilson and Melissa McCarthy will premiere on Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8pm and Sunday, Sept. 22 at 5:30pm leading into the Modern Family marathon.

The TCA Summer 2013 press tour continues and CBS was up yesterday, so we will give you a recap of their announcements. First up, CBS will launch its premiere Thursday now with a one hour episode of The Big Bang Theory on Sept. 26 from 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT. The back-to-back original episodes will lead into the series premiere of The Crazy Ones starring Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar. As a result, CBS's new comedy The Millers will now premiere a week later on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 8:30PM ET/PT. Meanwhile, new drama Under the Dome, which is television's #1 summer series in viewers and key demographics, will return in summer 2014 with 13 all-new episodes for its second season. Stephen King, whose bestselling novel is the basis for the series, will write the premiere episode of the second season.

There were show panels with the casts and producers of the following series: The Millers, Hostages, We Are Men, The Crazy Ones, upcoming syndicated entry The Arsenio Hall Show, The Good Wife, Mom and the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards. Right before the Hostages panel, there was a research briefing. What qualifies as a programming success in today's digital world? What are the multi-platform trends you need to be aware of? The CBS researcher quantified how non-linear viewing via DVR, Video-on-Demand and online streaming - adds to a show's total audience. Also shared was research on social media's relationship with television, what aging boomers mean to the 18-49 demographic and other audience trends.

The CW will continue the broadcast portion today, so come on back for a recap tomorrow on the blog for any notable highlights. We got a notice of some premiere date changes along with some other information, so we will highlight all that for you tomorrow. Come on back!

Boy Meets World Spin-Off Girl Meets World Picked Up to Series by Disney Channel; CBS Fall 2013 Premiere Dates

It's no surprise but finally Disney Channel has ordered Girl Meets World, a comedy series for kids and families from executive producer Michael Jacobs (Boy Meets World), to series! We first mentioned this some months ago when it was just a pilot but now it will be a series! Starring are 11-year-old Rowan Blanchard (Spy Kids All the Time in World in 4D) as the girl -- Riley Matthews -- 14-year-old Sabrina Carpenter (Sofia the First voice cast and a newly signed Hollywood Records recording artist) as her best friend Maya Fox, and Danielle Fishel and Ben Savage reprising the "Cory and Topanga" roles they made famous in ABC's hugely popular sitcom Boy Meets World (1993-2000). Production on the multi-camera series will begin this summer in Los Angeles for a scheduled 2014 premiere on Disney Channel. We'll have much more on exactly when soon. William Daniels, who of course played Mr. Feeny, will appear in the pilot episode and maybe more episodes. Other members of the original Boy Meets World cast could also pop-up on this new series, so stay tuned for more information. Jackée Harry (227, Sister Sister) appears in the pilot episode.

Set in New York City, the new comedy series will tell the wonderfully funny, heartfelt stories that Boy Meets World is renowned for -- only this time from a tween girl's perspective -- as the curious and bright 7th grader, Riley, and her quick-witted friend Maya embark on an unforgettable middle school experience. But their plans for a carefree year will be adjusted slightly under the watchful eyes of Riley's dad who's also a faculty member (and their new History teacher) and Riley's mom who owns a trendy afterschool hangout that specializes in pudding. Teo Halm plays Cory and Topanga's son, Elliott. The series was created by Michael Jacobs (Boy Meets World, Dinosaurs, My Two Dads, Charles In Charge) and April Kelly (Boy Meets World) and is executive-produced by Jacobs. Girl Meets World is from It's A Laugh Productions, Inc. and carries a TV-G parental guideline.

    CBS

CBS has announced its fall premiere dates already. They are the first network to announce premiere dates so far. The next night, How I Met Your Mother, entering its final season, returns with a special one-hour episode on Monday, Sept. 23 from 8:00-9:00 PM,ET/PT. Freshman comedy We Are Men will premiere a week later on Monday, Sept. 30 at 8:30PM ET/PT. The new comedy Mom premieres Monday, Sept. 23 at 9:30PM ET/PT followed by the freshman drama Hostages at 10:00 PM ET/PT. The only series to air prior to the start of the official premiere week is once again Survivor. For the 11th time in the past 12 seasons, Survivor will get an early start to the season when it returns with a special 90-minute premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 8-9:30pm.

The rest of the fall schedule will feature returning series: 2 Broke Girls on Monday, Sept. 23 at 9; NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles and the new night and time for Person of Interest on Tuesday, Sept. 24; dramas Criminal Minds and CSI on Wednesday, Sept. 25 beginning at 9pm; the season premiere of Elementary on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 10; while Fridays will have Undercover Boss lead off again into the new night and time for Hawaii Five-0 at 9 leading into Blue Bloods at 10 on Sept. 27. Saturdays will still have 48 Hours Mystery at 10 beginning Sept. 28 and on Sundays, the entire line-up remains unchanged and will return Sept. 30 with 60 Minutes, The Amazing Race, The Good Wife and The Mentalist. And one final note, CBS's mid-season drama Intelligence will premiere Monday, Feb. 24, 2014 at 10:00PM ET/PT, as soon as the 13-episode run for Hostages concludes.
