CBS Monday Sitcom Changes: We Are Men Canceled, Mike & Molly Returns; Nick Sitcoms Sam & Cat, See Dad Run Get Halloween Episodes

Mike & Molly

The first new sitcom pulled from the schedule is... We Are Men on CBS after just two airings. This is the second new series that has been pulled (the first being ABC drama Lucky 7), but the first sitcom off the line-up. Effective immediately, 2 Broke Girls moves to 8:30 PM, replacing the aforementioned single-camera comedy We Are Men. Rebroadcasts of The Big Bang Theory will temporarily air at 9:00 PM for the next two weeks (Oct. 14 and 21). No word on what will air on Oct. 28 yet, but starting Nov. 4, Mike & Molly returns to the schedule with its fourth season premiere at a new time of 9:00pm ET/PT, anchoring CBS Monday. The sitcom of course stars stars Billy Gardell, Melissa McCarthy, Reno Wilson, Katy Mixon, Swoosie Kurtz, Nyambi Nyambi, Louis Mustillo, Cleo King, Rondi Reed and David Higgins.

CBS has struggled on Mondays this season with its comedies and new drama Hostages. The only series posting good numbers is How I Met Your Mother, which is in its final season. As of now, Hostages will continue to air Mondays at 10pm on CBS after new sitcom Mom. Stay with us for continued updates.

The Haunted Hathaways

This Halloween season, Nickelodeon will treat viewers to a month of spooky, side-splitting new episodes from hit series Sam & Cat, The Haunted Hathaways, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, SpongeBob SquarePants, See Dad Run, Peter Rabbit, Deadtime Stories and a Halloween themed AwesomenessTV episode hosted by pop sensation Cody Simpson. We will cover the sitcom info from these. Sam & Cat "#DollSitting" airs Saturday, Oct. 19, at 8:00p.m. On Halloween, Sam and Cat are hired to babysit a doll, with unusual and creepy results. Cat also thinks she may have accidentally turned Dice into a monkey with a magic spell. Then The Haunted Hathaways "Haunted Halloween" airs Saturday, Oct. 19, at 8:30pm. When Ray and Miles agree to help Taylor with her first Halloween party in the Hathaway/Preston house by doing parlor tricks, things go awry after Louie defiantly turns to a powerful ghost to help really haunt the party. And on See Dad Run "See Dad Halloween" episode that airs Sunday, Oct. 20, at 8:00pm, David hopes to get the kids in the Halloween spirit, so he takes them with him to "exorcise" the Ghost of Stage 19. The kids aren't impressed until crazy things start happening at home, and the whole family is freaked out. Additionally, TeenNick reboots the classic "Nick or Treat" as "Nick or Tweet" with Halloween episodes of '90s classics Hey Arnold, Rugrats and more. Viewers can watch and tweet the secret word for the chance to win a super '90s prize pack.

CBS Fall Pilot Review: We Are Men - Premieres September 30; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of September 30, 2013)

Mom

We Are Men - Mondays at 8:30PM ET/PT on CBS
Premieres Monday, September 30, 2013 at 8:30PM ET/PT

by Skees

The 1970s brought us "two divorced men" who were forced to share an apartment together in the sitcom The Odd Couple, and in 2013, we get to see another tale about four divorced men living in the same apartment complex in the sitcom We are Men. The series, created by Rob Greenberg (known for his work with How I Met Your Mother), stars Chris Smith as Carter Thomas, a young guy ready to marry his one and only love. Sadly, a disaster happens at the wedding and he is left at the altar, and forced to move into a short-term apartment complex where he befriends three older divorced guys who've been up and down the aisle... more than once in some cases.

Cast Details:
Chris Smith as Carter Thomas
Kal Penn as Gil Bartis
Jerry O'Connell as Stuart Strickland
Tony Shaloub as Frank Russo
Rebecca Breeds as Jill Russo

Chris Smith (Carter Thomas) made his television debut in a 2009 episode of the series 30 Rock. The New York native attended the Tisch School of the Arts and was also trained at the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School in New York City. He has also made appearances in series including The Office, The Mindy Project, and How I Met Your Mother.

Kal Penn (Gil Bartis) became known to the entertainment industry with roles in films including National Lampoon's Van Wilder and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, and has had roles in series including House and How I Met Your Mother. He has had guest roles in series including Spin City and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. In addition to his roles in the entertainment industry, he has also served as Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement.

Jerry O'Connell (Stuart Strickland) is perhaps best known from his role in the movie Stand By Me, but he has had a long career that includes starring roles in Sliders and Crossing Jordan. Additional credits include guest roles in Charles in Charge, Ugly Betty, and Samantha Who?

Tony Shaloub (Frank Russo) is known for his TV roles in successful series including Monk and Wings. Additionally, he was a member of the cast in the short-lived sitcom Stark Raving Mad. He has appeared in guest roles in Dinosaurs, The X-Files, Frasier, and Ally McBeal.

Rebecca Breeds (Jill Russo) is an Australian actress relatively unknown to American audiences, but she has previously appeared as a regular in the Australian soap opera Home & Away as well as the children's drama Blue Water High.

Pilot Plot:

In the pilot, we begin with Carter Thomas' big day... he is about to get married. Unfortunately, he is abandoned at the altar at the most inopportune moment. With nowhere else to turn to, he ends up at a short-term rental complex filled with men who've been divorced, including Gil (Kal Penn), Stuart (Jerry O'Connell), and Frank (Tony Shalhoub). Despite the fact that they're older and have much more life experience, Carter befriends these guys and begins to see that there is life beyond a broken engagement.

Well, at least for a few days, until Carter reunites with his ex-fiance and begins to make new plans for a direction back to his old path in life. He quickly seems to be slipping back into his old ways of being under the control of somebody who wants to run his life and everything that he does. And one way or the other, he has to find that right path, maybe with a little help from his friends.

Analysis:

The series is created by Rob Greenberg, but I was very concerned when I read about the other executive producers for the series. The other two happen to be Eric and Kim Tannenbaum, and while they are certainly no strangers to the world of sitcoms, some of their past history comes in the hands of series that have aired on Fox, including Running Wilde, Brothers, and Sit Down, Shut Up. In all fairness, they are also associated with Two and a Half Men, and I would hardly put that in the category as those Fox series. Fortunately, this series actually seems to be, at least based upon the first episode, pretty good.

My opinion of the series seems to be in disagreement with a lot of critics who found it to be "boring," but I feel that it is something a bit different than what we've seen on TV lately. Sure, it has some elements of a romantic comedy where the guy or girl (in this case, the guy) is trying to find a guy or girl (in this case, a girl) while dealing with challenges in his life (in this case, three older friends who've found the girl... time and time again). But I also feel like this show doesn't push that over the top in the way that far too many shows do.

The pilot was not really over the top funny, but of course, being funny is not the only element necessary for a sitcom. The plot of the pilot was, at least to me, an entertaining plot to watch from beginning to end. So many series that I view these days seem to have dead end plots on the pilot episode, but in watching this, I feel like there are so many potential ideas that can be tossed around. The question is, of course, how the producers will use such ideas (and since we were only able to view the pilot, we don't have that answer yet).

One area of concern that I have, though, is the fact that this series does not seem to flow with the crop of CBS sitcoms as we know them. NBC and Fox started the single camera sitcom trend, and in recent years ABC has made it work very well for them as well, but CBS, while managing to have some of the best traditional sitcoms, has still yet to have one proven hit in this format. This can be particularly problematic considering that the CBS Monday night lineup is still a multi-camera lineup.

Conclusion:

It is very rare that I watch a sitcom pilot and actually enjoy it. Even shows that I love dearly, I can almost always look back at the pilot and think to myself that it wasn't very good, but I actually enjoyed this one. The series has some true potential to be a great series, but it is really on the wrong network and based upon other reviews, it isn't going over particularly well with some critics either. I'm hopeful, though, that audiences will give the show a fair shake, and that it won't go down as one of those series that we forget about before the season is said and done.

Final Numbers (out of 5 stars):

Watchability: 4/5
Funniness: 3/5
Overall: 4/5

The Munsters and The Addams Family Return Again to Boomerang in October; CBS.com Presents a Pre-Premiere of We Are Men

For the third straight year, Boomerang will bring us two classic sitcoms all October long! Boomerang is bewitched this October with a line-up of spooky episodes and specials themed around everyone's favorite haunted celebration. Spotlighting the month-long Halloween festivities, Boomerang will feature spooktacular blocks of 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, The Funky Phantom, Goober and the Ghost Chasers, The Munsters (live-action series, 1964-66) and The Addams Family (animated, 1992-95, as well as live-action series, 1964-66) on weekdays from 11am-3:30pm ET/PT with the live-action sitcoms The Addams Family and The Munsters airing again in the 12am ET hour. On weekends, the network is offering a bag full of treats with classic series and specials, including The Addams Family animated, The Halloween Tree, The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy and Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf from 9am-1pm ET/PT and 11pm-1am ET/PT.

The Munsters comically depicted the "average" American home life of a close-knit blue-collar family - of monsters - that were based on the classic monsters of Universal Studios, including Frankenstein, Count Dracula, The Werewolf and The Bride of Dracula. Presented in black-and-white, the half-hour series starred Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster; Yvonne De Carlo as his wife, Lily; Al Lewis as Grandpa; Butch Patrick as Eddie; and Beverly Owen/Pat Priest as Marilyn, the "ugly niece" who resembled Marilyn Monroe. The show featured satirical situations where the lovable Munsters interacted as normal, good citizens with an unsuspecting public, who were terrified solely by their appearance. The Munsters premiered on CBS Television on Sept. 24, 1964, and played for two full seasons (70 episodes) that concluded on May 12, 1966. The Munsters will air all month weekdays at 3pm & 12:30am ET/PT starting Monday, October 7.
Based on Charles Addams' New Yorker comics, The Addams Family featured a much more well-to-do family of creepy characters that generally stayed within their eerie yet palatial mansion. Also shot in black-and-white and immortalized by a catchy, snappy theme-song, The Addams Family starred John Astin as Gomez Addams; Carolyn Jones as his wife, Morticia; Jackie Coogan as Uncle Fester; Ted Cassidy as the butler, Lurch; Blossom Rock as Grandmama Addams; and Lisa Loring and Ken Weatherwax, respectively, as the Addams' children, Wednesday and Pugsley. The series' humor derives from a culture clash with the rest of the world - the Addams treat normal visitors (often arriving with evil intentions) with great warmth and courtesy, but are puzzled by the horrified reactions to their "ordinary" behavior and tastes. The Addams Family premiered on ABC Television on Sept. 18, 1964, and presented 64 episodes that concluded on April 8, 1966. The live-action sitcom will air weekdays at 2:30pm ET/PT and 12am ET/PT starting Monday, October 7.

In the animated series, the Addams are not your typical family: they take delight in most of the things that "normal" people would be terrified of. Gomez Adams is an extremely wealthy man, and is able to indulge his wife Morticia's every desire - be it cultivation of poisonous plants, or a candlelit dinner in a graveyard. People visiting the Addams family just don't seem to appreciate the 7 foot tall butler "Lurch" or the helping hand (which is just a disembodied hand" named "Thing"). The animated The Addams Family will air also starting Monday, October 7, weekdays at 12:30pm & 1:00pm ET/PT, along with weekends from 12-1pm and 11pm-12am ET/PT. Remember all of these specials series are for October 2013 only and then these shows will be off the line-up in November. So tune in!

    We Are Men

CBS.com is offering audiences a first-look at the premiere episode of We Are Men on CBS.com, the CBS App, and select CBS Audience Network sites. The new single-camera comedy makes its official debut on the CBS Television Network on Monday, Sept. 30 at 8:30PM ET/PT. During the television premiere on Sept. 30, fans can also chat live with many members of the We Are Men cast as part of this fall's CBS Tweet Week. During the broadcast in the Eastern and Central time zones, We Are Men stars Tony Shalhoub, Kal Penn and Chris Smith will be tweeting live and taking fan questions. Fans can join the conversation by following #CBSTweetWeek on Twitter or the stars' personal accounts: @SmithChris, @KalPenn and Tony Shalhoub via @WeAreMenCBS.

We'll have a review of the comedy closer to the premiere. The series is about four single guys living in a short-term apartment complex who unexpectedly find camaraderie over their many missteps in love. Carter (Chris Smith), the youngest and most recent addition to the group, moved in after being ditched at the altar mid-ceremony, and is now eager to re-enter the dating scene and get on with his life with some guidance from his "band of brothers": Frank Russo, a middle-aged clothing manufacturer and four-time divorcée who still fancies himself a ladies man (Golden Globe and multiple Emmy Award winner Tony Shalhoub); Gil Bartis, a small business owner who was caught having the world's worst affair (Kal Penn); and Stuart Weber, a Speedo-wearing OB/GYN who's hiding his assets until his second divorce is settled (Jerry O'Connell); along with Abby, Frank's charming and attractive daughter, who stands as the one positive remnant from his failed relationships (Rebecca Breeds). Armed with a hot tub, poolside barbeque and plenty of questionable advice, these losers in the marriage department take Carter under their wing to impart their own brand of wisdom about the opposite sex.

MTV2 Adds Family Matters; CBS Sitcoms Free Frozen Yogurt Promotion at Yogurtland

    Family Matters

Viacom-owned MTV2 has quietly added Family Matters to its line-up as of last week. The sitcom is still airing on BET, which is also owned by Viacom. Family Matters is airing most weeknights from 2-4am in the late night, while BET is airing the series in the mornings/early afternoons. The hit '90s sitcom will join other '90s favorites such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Saved by the Bell, Boy Meets World, Martin, The Wayans Bros., In Living Color and Smart Guy. Most of these air regularly on weekdays, such as Sabrina weekdays from 9am-12pm and Saved by the Bell from 12-2pm. Martin airs in the late night from 12-2am, while In Living Color, The Wayans Bros. and Smart Guy are on weekends mainly. The network also airs The PJ's from time to time, while Living Single has been removed.

The series of course is about The Winslows, a middle-class suburban Chicago black family may seem like a normal family but with the additions of a sister, her son, Carl's mother and one nerdy neighbor there is never a dull moment in this household. Stay with us for continued updates and to see if MTV2 will be adding anything else later this fall?

WE tv Fall 2013 Schedule with Will & Grace; Queen Latifah and CBS Sitcom Stars on Teach, A New CBS Special

    Will & Grace

This Fall, WE tv will be adding the hit sitcom Will & Grace to its line-up as it moves from Lifetime to WE tv. This isn't an exclusive deal, but Lifetime did lose rights. The deal was made for WE tv a few years back, as we announced. The series will launch with a launch marathon on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 2pm-11pm with an assortment of episodes. Select episodes will encore in late night as well from 11pm-5am. Then Will & Grace will join the regular WE tv line-up the very next day (Monday, Sept. 23, 2013), airing weekdays from 5-8pm ET replacing the evening airings of Roseanne. In addition, Will & Grace will air Tuesday nights in primetime from 8pm-1am with an encore from 1am-5am. Back to Roseanne, that sitcom will still air weekdays from 10am-1pm and on Saturdays from 10am-4pm. The rest of the schedule will remain intact, with CSI: Miami the only other off-network offering, airing Mondays from 8pm-1am (encore 1am-5am) and Sundays from 4pm-11pm (encores 11pm-5am).

    Teach CBS Special

Celebrities from film, television and professional sports will honor educators as part of Teach, a new two-hour special that explores America's education system through the eyes, minds and hearts of its most essential resource – teachers, which premieres Friday, Sept. 6 from 8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT on CBS. CBS network stars Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Anna Faris (Mom), Allison Janney (Mom) and Jerry O'Connell (We Are Men), along with Paul George (NBA's Indiana Pacers), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (HitRECord on TV!, Don Jon) and Rashida Jones (The Awesomes, Parks and Recreation) will appear on the broadcast, joining previously announced host and narrator Queen Latifah. The special, from Academy Award winner Davis Guggenheim (The First Year, Waiting for Superman) and Participant Media, captures the essence of what it means to be a teacher through the lens and extensive footage of a year-in-the-life of four public school teachers.

Teach offers an intense and emotional illustration of how passion, innovation and a toolbox of learned skills drive these educators as they navigate the ups and downs of the 2012-2013 school year. Viewers will go into the public school district classrooms of: Matt Johnson, a 4th grade teacher at McGlone Elementary, Denver; Shelby Harris, 7th grade math teacher at Kuna Middle School, Kuna, Idaho; Joel Laguna, a 10th grade AP World History teacher at Garfield High, Los Angeles; and Lindsay Chinn, a 9th grade algebra teacher at MLK Early College, Denver. Tune in this Friday on CBS.

Boy Meets World Spin-Off Girl Meets World Picked Up to Series by Disney Channel; CBS Fall 2013 Premiere Dates

It's no surprise but finally Disney Channel has ordered Girl Meets World, a comedy series for kids and families from executive producer Michael Jacobs (Boy Meets World), to series! We first mentioned this some months ago when it was just a pilot but now it will be a series! Starring are 11-year-old Rowan Blanchard (Spy Kids All the Time in World in 4D) as the girl -- Riley Matthews -- 14-year-old Sabrina Carpenter (Sofia the First voice cast and a newly signed Hollywood Records recording artist) as her best friend Maya Fox, and Danielle Fishel and Ben Savage reprising the "Cory and Topanga" roles they made famous in ABC's hugely popular sitcom Boy Meets World (1993-2000). Production on the multi-camera series will begin this summer in Los Angeles for a scheduled 2014 premiere on Disney Channel. We'll have much more on exactly when soon. William Daniels, who of course played Mr. Feeny, will appear in the pilot episode and maybe more episodes. Other members of the original Boy Meets World cast could also pop-up on this new series, so stay tuned for more information. Jackée Harry (227, Sister Sister) appears in the pilot episode.

Set in New York City, the new comedy series will tell the wonderfully funny, heartfelt stories that Boy Meets World is renowned for -- only this time from a tween girl's perspective -- as the curious and bright 7th grader, Riley, and her quick-witted friend Maya embark on an unforgettable middle school experience. But their plans for a carefree year will be adjusted slightly under the watchful eyes of Riley's dad who's also a faculty member (and their new History teacher) and Riley's mom who owns a trendy afterschool hangout that specializes in pudding. Teo Halm plays Cory and Topanga's son, Elliott. The series was created by Michael Jacobs (Boy Meets World, Dinosaurs, My Two Dads, Charles In Charge) and April Kelly (Boy Meets World) and is executive-produced by Jacobs. Girl Meets World is from It's A Laugh Productions, Inc. and carries a TV-G parental guideline.
