Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas

Freeform doubled down on their promise to make the holiday season bigger than ever by announcing casting for two original holiday movies today. Actors Francia Raisa (grown-ish), Charles Michael Davis (Younger), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Moesha), Gavin Stenhouse (Allegiance), Shanica Knowles (The Young & the Restless), Alphonso McAuley (The Middle), Hank Chen (The New 30) and Alison Fernandez (Once Upon a Time), as well as the previously announced Dave Annable (Yellowstone) and Odette Annable (Supergirl), have all been cast to star in holiday films airing during Freeform's "25 Days of Christmas" annual programming event. Both projects will start production this month.

Announced earlier this morning by Tyra Banks on her Instagram account, the cast of Life Size 2 has been confirmed. Francia Raisa will play Grace Manning, the confident and funny CEO of Marathon Toys, a huge toy company started by her mother that is most famous for manufacturing the iconic Eve doll. Grace is also a hot mess in the middle of her quarter-life crisis and realizing that she is in over her head as CEO. To make matters worse, her wild-child ways are causing the company's stock to plummet. Joining Raisa and Banks are Gavin Stenhouse as Grace's potential love interest Calum; Shanica Knowles as Tahlia and Hank Chen as Brendan, who are Grace's best friends; along with Alison Fernandez as Lex, Grace's young next-door neighbor.

Dave and Odette Annable will star in No Sleep 'Til Christmas, an unexpected and whimsical holiday romantic comedy about two insomniac strangers plagued by exhaustion. Lizzie (Odette Annable) is a high-end event planner preparing for her own life's biggest event - her wedding. She lies awake nightly while her devoted fiancé Josh (Charles Michael Davis) rests peacefully, unaware of how to solve her issue. When a sleep-deprived incident causes her to run into Billy (Dave Annable), a low-key bartender who is just as sleepless and frustrated as she is, they discover that they can only fall asleep while next to each other. What seems like an odd coincidence, and frankly a disruption to their lives, might be more meaningful than they'd like to admit. Sheryl Lee Ralph also stars as Josh's mother Mrs. Wright with Alphonso McAuley as Andy, Billy's best friend.

ABC Mid-Season Pilot Review: Splitting Up Together - Premieres Tuesday (March 27); CBS Announces Season Finale Airdates for 2017-2018

Splitting Up Together

Splitting Up Together - Tuesdays at 9:30PM ET/PT on ABC
Premieres Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 9:30PM ET/PT

by Vincent

Lena and Martin were once madly in love. But, like many marriages, time and circumstance eventually took their toll and the romance disappeared. Finding themselves in a platonic marriage and acting more like a pair of camp counselors wrangling their kids than a couple hopelessly in love, they decide that everyone's lives would be better served if they got a divorce. Still wanting the best for their three kids and facing a daunting real estate market, the couple decides to "Bird Nest" instead. One parent will live in the house as the "on-duty" parent taking care of the kids, while the "off-duty" parent will live in the detached garage, doing whatever he or she pleases while switching off every other week. Could being apart ultimately lead to them getting back together?

Cast Details:

Jenna Fischer as Lena
Oliver Hudson as Martin
Bobby Lee as Arthur
Diane Farr as Maya
Lindsay Price as Camille

Jenna Fischer (Lena) is best known for her role as Pam Beesly on the long-running NBC sitcom The Office. She has also appeared in films such as Blades of Glory, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Hall Pass.

Oliver Hudson (Martin) is an actor known for his role on the TV series Scream Queens, Nashville, and the long-running sitcom Rules of Engagement. He is also the brother of actress Kate Hudson and son of Goldie Hawn.

Bobby Lee (Arthur) is a comedian and actor known for his long-running stint on the sketch comedy series MADtv, and for his role in films such as Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Pineapple Express and The Dictator.

Diane Farr (Maya) is an actress best known for her roles in the hit shows NUMB3RS and Rescue Me, as well as guest appearances on series such as Modern Family, Private Practice and CSI.

Lindsay Price (Camille) is an American actress previously known for her roles on soap operas, from daytime soaps such as All My Children and The Bold and the Beautiful to the primetime soaps such as Beverly Hills 90210, Lipstick Jungle and Eastwick.

Pilot Plot:

"Pilot" (Airs Tuesday, March 27 at 9:30PM ET)

After breaking the news to their friends and family about their divorce, Lena has to deal with her son Mason's growing pains. Meanwhile, Martin, still feeling guilty about refusing to dance with Lena at their wedding, secretly tries to atone for his oversight and surprise his ex-wife with new moves.

Analysis:

The most interesting thing about Splitting Up Together is the creators behind it. The show was created and is executive produced by Emily Kapnek, and also has Ellen DeGeneres credited as an executive producer. Kapnek previously created cult favorite ABC sitcoms Suburgatory and Selfie. Suburgatory started off as a promising hit with lots of positive buzz (and ratings), but gradually faded and was quietly canceled after its third season. Selfie only lasted for half of a season, but it garnered a following in that short time and remains a popular brilliant but cancelled: cult hit. What's notable about both shows, though, is that they were able to garner followings based on their lovable, quirky characters and gradual yet effective warmth and ability to tug on the heartstrings. Both shows had big concepts (in the case of Suburgatory a suburban satire, in the case of Selfie a shallow millennial woman learning how to care about people), but quietly deconstructed those concepts to reveal the true human beings behind them. Splitting Up Together has a similarly big concept, and in these early episodes for review, it shows potential of moving past it and revealing the depths of its characters - but it doesn't quite get there yet.

Splitting Up Together's pilot episode is a little boring, frankly - it gets a lot of plot out of the way and is light on jokes, but clearly has the entire cast putting in their all. And the cast is very game for whatever comes their way, particularly Jenna Fischer, whose first major sitcom role since The Office finds her a lovable anchor of the series. Future episodes begin to allow her to have a little more fun, and as expected, she handles it with aplomb. If I have one major concern with the series, it's that these early episodes are clearly laying a path to get its central couple back together, and the show is far more interesting examining why their marriage doesn't work than when it's suggesting that they should get back together. It would be incredibly generic and predictable for this to turn into another "will they/won't they" series, and I hope the glimmers of something more interesting is the direction the series goes down in the future.

Final Thoughts:

Splitting Up Together has an excellent cast and team of creators behind it, and there is potential for it to live up to the name of those involved in its early episodes, even if much of the show's early goings are a bit bland and predictable. Hopefully, the show will follow Emily Kapnek's former ABC sitcoms and begin leaning into its more interesting, character-building side and utilize all of its talent to their best of their abilities.

Final Numbers (out of 5 stars):

Watchability: 3.5/5
Funniness: 3/5
Overall: 3/5

TV Land Orders Community-style Sitcom Pilot Called Teachers; CBS 2014 Season Finale Dates

    TV Land

TV Land has given a pilot order to Teachers, based on the popular web series of the same name. The show revolves around six elementary school teachers who are trying to mold the minds and lives of America's youth, but they don't really seem to have their own lives together at all. From making their class help them stalk exes online to altering a grade because the art teacher is "kind of a b****," these teachers are certainly changing the world, one student at a time. Alison Brie (Community) is attached as an executive producer, and the stars of the web series, all named a version of "Katie" - Caitlin Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O'Brien and Katie Thomas - are all signed on to reprise their roles.

Barlow, Colloton, Freedman, Lambert, O'Brien and Thomas, who call their group The Katydids, are all from Chicago with experience at The Second City, The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York and iO West in Los Angeles. Their web series, Teachers, can be watched at TeachersWebSeries.com. Matt Miller (Chuck, Las Vegas) and Cap Gun TV are executive producers alongside Brie, and Jones and Keith Cox will serve as executive producers for TV Land. This is just a pilot order, so stay with us if TV Land decides to order this pilot to series.

Cloo's Classic Get Smart, Mannix and Charlie's Angels Marathon; CBS Season Finale Dates in May 2012

    Get Smart
Cloo will be airing some classic marathons once again in April and May. As we mentioned, we have already gotten classic Saturday marathons of Mannix and Get Smart, but now we'll get more! On Saturday, April 21, 2012 it's three shows in one day! First, we'll get Get Smart from 6-10am ET! Then its time for some Mannix from 10am-4pm ET and what better way to finish it off with Charlie's Angels from 4pm-6am. It's nice to see Get Smart and Mannix get some play again and Charlie's Angels is always nice to see, as it also airs on sister network Universal HD.
What about in May? There will also be a Cloo Classic Marathon that month. On Saturday, May 19 we will get a full 24-hour marathon of Charlie's Angels! Hello, Angels indeed! We'll of course continue to keep you up to date of any future Cloo Classic marathons and we hope we get plenty more to come! And hopefully some more classics join in on the fun. View the Cloo website to see if you get this cable network.

CBS announced the dates for its 2011-12 series' season finales. Finales include two-hour editions of The Amazing Race, Survivor: One World, NCIS: Los Angeles and Criminal Minds. Also, sitcoms 2 Broke Girls and How I Met Your Mother will both get one-hour season finales! The finales kick-off on Sunday, April 29 with the season finale of The Good Wife in its 9pm timeslot. Then on the following week on May 6, it will be the two-hour season finale of The Amazing Race from 8-10pm. The very next night on Monday, May 7, CBS will air a one-hour season finale of 2 Broke Girls starting at a special time of 8pm, as How I Met Your Mother is preempted. That sitcom will get the one-hour finale treatment the following week on May 14 from 8-9pm. New drama Unforgettable, whose fate is still not revealed, will have its finale on Tuesday, May 8 at 10pm. CSI will end its season on Wednesday, May 9 at 10pm. The Big Bang Theory is ending pretty early as it has its season finale on Thursday, May 10 -- a week before the final Thursday of the season. The Friday finales will also end a week before the final Friday of the season, as these shows end on May 11: Undercover Boss, CSI: NY and Blue Bloods. On Sunday, May 13, it is the Survivor finale event from 8-11pm with a two-hour finale and a live Reunion show at 10pm. Following the Mother finale on Monday, May 14, will be the finales of the other Monday series Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly and Hawaii Five-0 -- also a week before the final Monday of the season. And CBS continues that pattern on Tuesdays, with the NCIS finale at 8pm and a two-hour NCIS: LA finale from 9-11pm on Tuesday, May 15. Criminal Minds will also get a two-hour finale on Wednesday, May 16 from 9-11pm. No word what airs at 8pm on that night, as Survivor will have its finale Wednesday episode on May 9. On Thursday, May 17, Rules of Engagement will have its season finale at 8:30pm. It looks like a Bang repeat will lead-in. Weird. Dramas Person of Interest and The Mentalist will have their season finales also on that night from 9-11pm.
So everything but the Thursday, May 17 finales are ending early. CBS looks like will air a lot of repeats from May 18-23 (like last season) -- the final week of the season. Look for a new Jesse Stone movie on Sunday, May 20.

ABC Family Summer 2012 Schedule Has New Sitcom Baby Daddy; Network Notes Includes CBS Renews Many Series, NBC Summer 2012

ABC Family sets a sizzling summer line-up with the world premiere of three new original series -- the one-hour drama, Bunheads, the half-hour comedy series Baby Daddy and the one-hour docuseries Beverly Hills Nannies. In addition, season premiere dates have also been set for the hit ABC Family original series Pretty Little Liars, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Jane By Design and Melissa and Joey to round-out the three nights of original programming line-up.

The Secret Life of the American Teenager

On Mondays, as previously announced, ABC Family's longest running series The Secret Life of the American Teenager returns with all-new episodes next Monday, March 26 at 8:00PM ET/PT. This summer, The Secret Life of the American Teenager celebrates its fifth season (starting June 11) and 100th episode – a first for an ABC Family scripted series. Joining the drama this summer on Mondays will be the new original series Bunheads starting Monday, June 11 at 9:00PM ET/PT. Bunheads is the tale of a Las Vegas showgirl who impulsively marries a man, moves to his sleepy coastal town, and takes an uneasy role at her new mother-in-law's dance school.

On Tuesdays, even after "A" has been revealed, it is only the beginning of the mystery and lies for Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer when the hit original ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars returns for its season three premiere on Tuesday, June 5 at 8:00PM ET/PT. 24 all-new episodes have been ordered and it is expected that it will be split up into two halves, like ABC Family normally does. The hit drama will lead into ABC Family's original series Jane By Design, which will return with all eight new episodes for its second half starting Tuesday, June 5 at 9:00PM ET/PT.

    Baby Daddy

And finally on Wednesdays, as we first broke, Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence return with 15 all-new episodes for the second season of their original sitcom Melissa & Joey with back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, May 30 at from 8:00PM–9:00PM ET/PT. The hit sitcom will lead into a new sitcom! The new half-hour comedy original series Baby Daddy premieres a few weeks later on Wednesday, June 20 at 8:30PM ET/PT after Melissa & Joey. From executive producer Dan Berendsen, the series is about a young man (Jean-Luc Bilodeau) who becomes a surprise dad to a baby girl when she's left on his doorstep by an ex-girlfriend. He decides to raise the baby with the help of his mother (Melissa Peterman), his brother (Derek Theler), his best buddy Tucker (Tahj Mowry) and his close female friend, Riley (Chelsea Kane), who is harboring a secret crush on him. The sitcom has a ten episode order. And then a few weeks later, the sitcom will lead into a new reality series. From the production company of The Real Housewives series, Beverly Hills Nannies is a new docuseries that follows the lives of a group of nannies working for families in the most exclusive zip code in the country and premieres on Wednesday, July 11 at 9:00PM ET/PT for eight weeks.

One final note, fan favorite drama Switched at Birth will return with all-new original episodes in Fall 2012, as it has about ten episodes left from its first season order.

USA Network Fall 2011 Schedule; 2011 TCA Awards Winners

Today on the cable fall schedule barrage, we have USA Network. Like nearly all of the Universal-owned networks, USA Network doesn't have a set schedule, but they air series in blocks. Series that air in blocks for them are NCIS, Law & Order: SVU, House, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent getting most of the action. USA Network also airs CSI a few times a week in late fringe, such as Fridays at 10pm. USA will also have the exclusive off-network rights to premiere CSI Seasons 11 (and beyond) beginning this fall. And the only sitcoms on the network are Becker and Wings and they are still being used as a filler in late nights or early mornings. The only show that regularly airs at a set time is Monk, airing weekends at 6am.
We do have one change, though! USA Network will start airing reruns of NCIS: Los Angeles every Wednesday at 7pm starting Wednesday, Sept. 28 in between marathons of the original series NCIS. We previously announced this, but the series will not air five days a week until Fall 2013, so for now, it is just once a week. Among original series, all of the summer entrees will be ending in August or September. In September, season finales of Suits and Burn Notice will air on Thursday, Sept. 8 while freshman drama Necessary Roughness will ends its first season on Wednesday, Sept. 14. With the start of the TV season on broadcast, USA Network will not have any original series to start the fall season.
Stay tuned for any updates, if anything changes in October or beyond!

CSI Joins USA Network in January 2011; Antenna TV Affiliates Update

As we mentioned earlier this year, USA Network has acquired CSI. USA Network will have non-exclusive rights to seasons 1-10 (shared with Spike TV) when they premiere the show next month. Starting Fall 2011, USA Network will also have the exclusive off-network rights to premiere CSI Seasons 11 and beyond. Then finally, beginning September 2014, USA Network will be the exclusive home of CSI, as Spike TV will lose the rights to the series.
So we knew all of that, now to where CSI will air on USA Network! CSI will join the schedule on Friday, January 14, 2011 with a 24-hour launch marathon starting at 6am! The series will then air every Friday from 8pm-1am ET/PT starting Jan. 21. The rest of the USA Network schedule will remain the same with blocks of many shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent, House, NCIS, and Law & Order: SVU. There will also be continued airings of Walker Texas Ranger, JAG, Monk and sitcoms Becker and Wings.
Original series wise, January rings in the year with the mid-season premieres of returning series White Collar and Royal Pains and the launch of USA's newest offering, Fairly Legal. Seasons 2.5 of both White Collar (7 episodes) and Royal Pains (6 episodes) premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 10pm and Thursday, Jan. 20 at 9pm, respectively. Royal Pains will be the lead-in for new drama Fairly Legal, which premieres Thursday, Jan. 20 at 10pm. Prior season episodes will air over 3 weeks on Tuesday mornings for White Collar, which includes a White Collar season 2 marathon on Tuesday, Jan. 18 from 6:30am-2:30pm to platform the season premiere later that night. Two months later, a White Collar season 2.5 marathon will air on Tuesday, March 8 from 6am-2pm to platform the season finale later that night at 10pm. For Royal Pains, prior season episodes will air over 3 weeks on Thursday mornings starting January 6 to promote the return and a Royal Pains "Ladies Man-a-thon" will air on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 6 from 10am-12am. The season finale will be on Thursday, Feb. 24. And finally, new series Fairly Legal will have 10 episodes, including the pilot. A mid-season marathon will air on Saturday, Feb. 26 from 9am-1pm (prior to the first week without a Royal Pains lead-in). The series will continue to air though Thursday, March 24.
And finally, we will cover marathon stunts for USA Network in January. USA welcomes 2011 with a weekend of marathons of NCIS and Law & Order: SVU! The NCIS "Resolve to Watch" marathon will air on Saturday, Jan. 1 from 6am-4am, while the SVU "Resolve to Watch" marathon will air on Sunday, Jan. 2 from 6am-4am. An NCIS marathon will air on MLK Jr. Day, Monday, January 17 from 6am-9pm. NCIS marathons will also air on Sunday, Jan. 16 from 9am-11pm and Sunday, Jan. 30 from 12pm-11pm. A Law & Order: SVU "Happy Birthday Mariska" marathon is planned for Sunday, Jan. 23 from 12pm-12am.
That about covers USA Network January 2011, series wise. Stay with us for any further updates, but as of now CSI will air Fridays in primetime on USA Network.

ION Television Fall 2010 Schedule; TCA Summer 2010 Press Tour: Fox

We continue our fall 2010 schedules barrage with ION Television today. Yes, ION Television is not a cable network, but we always cover it and it is the only broadcast network to air a daily line-up of reruns. ION won't make many changes to the schedule this September, but they are losing the rights to NCIS, their strong performing Thursday series. NCIS will last air on ION on Thursday, Sept. 2, before more Criminal Minds takes over the two-hour block from 9-11pm. NCIS' two-year term has expired. It joined the line-up in September 2008. The show will still air on cable on USA Network and the season premiere is on Sept. 21 on CBS.
Other changes are another Criminal Minds at 8pm on Thursdays leading into the newly added hours on Thursdays from 9-11pm. And more Criminal Minds will be added on Fridays, starting Sept. 10 from 10pm-12am, cutting Without a Trace Friday blocks to 6pm-10pm. This means Criminal Minds now airs every weeknight at 10 and 11pm, along with 9pm on Mon-Tues, Thurs and 8pm on Thursdays. Without a Trace is now cut to weekdays 6pm and 7pm, along with 8pm (except Thurs), and 9pm on Wednesdays & Fridays. Ghost Whisperer remains weekdays from 3-6pm. On Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 6), ION Television will present a marathon of legal drama Shark starring James Woods from 3pm-10pm with seven season two episodes.
On weekends, movies continue to rule, with M*A*S*H leading in from 3-4pm on Saturdays and My Name is Earl on Sundays from 3-4pm then movies air for the rest of the schedule from 4pm-12am. Movie premieres for the month are In Her Shoes, The Family Stone, A Knights Tale, Pay It Forward, Back to the Future, Back to the Future II, Back to the Future III, and Death Wish. Encore airings for the month are Pale Rider, Outlaw Josey Wales, Blood Work, and March of the Penguins.
We are not yet sure if ION Television will have any changes in October, so stay with us in the coming weeks for that. Let's hope they add another sitcom or two to the line-up filled with dramas. View the ION Television September 2010 schedule and come on back tomorrow for another installment of the fall schedules barrage!

Today is Fox's turn at the TCA Summer 2010 press tour. And once again our pal Mike of TVTango.com has live coverage! As always, you can ask a question to a panel member and he will try to get it answered for you! View his live coverage all day!

Some of the things we learned were: Terra Nova, the new family adventure drama series executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, Peter Chernin, Brannon Braga and David Fury, will preview in May 2011 on Fox prior to its series premiere in the fall (like Glee did). Jason O'Mara (Life on Mars) has been cast in the lead role of Jim Shannon, the patriarch of the show's central family. As previously announced, Emmy Award winner Alex Graves will direct the pilot, and Emmy Award-winning executive producer and director Jon Cassar has joined the series as an executive producer and series director. Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Hugh Laurie, Halle Berry, Ricky Gervais, Daniel Radcliffe, Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie, Mark Zuckerberg, Mike Scioscia, Martha Stewart, Paul Rudd, Rachel Weisz, Cheech & Chong, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Alyson Hannigan, Danica Patrick, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Joe Mantegna are among the guest voices for Season 22 of The Simpsons. TV Land August 2010 Has The Nanny Join; ION Television Sees Strong Ratings for 2nd Quarter

August 2010 sees an addition of a new sitcom on TV Land, as The Nanny joins the line-up. The series will be borrowed from sister network Nick at Nite. We will let you know if it will continue on Nick at Nite as well, as soon as we get their August schedule. Perhaps by fall The Nanny will be gone from Nick at Nite as My Wife & Kids joins the schedule? Stay tuned. Anyway, back to TV Land August, The Nanny joins the schedule on Monday, Aug. 2 with a week-long marathon! The flashy girl from Flushing comes to TV Land in a week long star-studded marathon featuring the biggest guest stars and best episodes from the series' run. Whoopi Goldberg, Joan Collins, Billy Ray Cyrus, Celine Dion and even Liz Taylor are just a few of the friends Nanny Fine has coming along for the fun all week-long. Don't miss the craziness of this marathon from Monday to Friday from 6pm-9pm & 11pm-2am and if that's not enough, get even more of The Nanny marathon on the weekend (Saturday 12pm-9pm and Sunday 1pm-10pm). And don't miss Nanny Fine when she settles into her regular 8pm & 1am hour timeslots weeknights beginning Monday, August 9, 2010!
So what else will change by Aug. 9? Due to The Nanny airing in the 8pm hour, The Cosby Show goes from 8-9pm to 7-8pm and Sanford & Son goes from 7-8pm to 6-7pm, replacing All in the Family. That means All in the Family will only be morning now from 9-10am. In the late night, The Nanny will air in the 1am hour, so The Cosby Show is shifted to 2-3am, Home Improvement is shifted to 3-4am, and Three's Company from 4-5am.
On the weekends, The Nanny gets various weekend blocks on different times, mainly Saturday afternoons. It also gets a late night hour on weekends airing from 2:30am-3am, shifting Home Improvement to 3:30am & 4am, and cutting Three's Company to 4:30am-6am. Everything else remains the same on weekends and the rest of the schedule as well.
TV Land will have the season finale of Hot in Cleveland on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 10pm. Episode titles for the month are "The Play's the Thing" on Aug. 4, "Good Luck Faking the Goiter" on Aug. 11, and "Tornado" on Aug. 18. Hot in Cleveland revolves around three fabulous L.A. women of a certain age who are best friends (Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick, and Betty White). Their lives are changed forever when their plane – headed for Paris – unexpectedly lands in Cleveland and they soon rediscover themselves in a new "promised land." Loving their new home, the women find themselves living under one roof and battling the sassy caretaker of the property they have rented, played by the inimitable Betty White.
The third season of TV Land's hit original series She's Got The Look premieres the following week on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 10pm and is back to discover the next supermodel over the age of 35, hosted by Brooke Burke (Dancing with the Stars). The contenders will live in a house together and participate in weekly challenges to see who has what it takes to have "The Look." The winner will receive $100,000, a contract with the world-famous Wilhelmina Modeling Agency and a spread in SELF magazine. Emmy Award-Winner Allison Grodner returns as executive producer and has teamed up with executive producer Rich Meehan in their first project together under their new banner, Fly On The Wall Entertainment.
TV Land Monday movies for the month are Big, Top Gun, Turner & Hooch, Three Men And A Baby, Twelve Angry Men, and the premiere of The Client. View the complete TV Land August 2010 schedule and highlights and also discuss your thoughts!

Lost Laughs of '50s and '60s Television

Lost Laughs of '50s and '60s Television (McFarland Publishers, $35.00) is David C. Tucker's look at thirty different sitcoms of the first two decades on television that have, for whatever reason, become "lost." And when they say lost, they really do mean lost. We all remember some of the biggest hits of those decades, such as I Love Lucy, The Twilight Zone, Leave it to Beaver, Bewitched, The Andy Griffith Show, and many others. But does anybody truly remember, for example Hennesey or Pete and Gladys, or for that matter, even heard of them? Tucker gives us all of the details of thirty sitcoms that shaped and molded the genre, then completely disappeared, mostly to never be seen again.

The book begins with a brief introduction by Tucker where he admits, for the most part, there is a reason that we don't hear much about these series. Simply put, many of the series were awful, but at the same time, fun to watch for that very reason. Some of the series were good series, but couldn't really go on due to financial or artistic differences of the cast and crew. Tucker doesn't claim that these sitcoms deserve more attention than the more popular series of the dawn of television, but rather presents the thirty chapters of this book to give some attention to those series that have come and gone, only to be buried deep in the archives (or in some cases, destroyed).

The book dedicates approximately five to ten pages to each of the sitcoms covered in the book, with each chapter beginning with cast and crew details as well as network and time slot information for the series. He then proceeds to give a few lines of dialog from the actual series itself, after which he goes into a detailed synopsis and critique (although he doesn't try to necessarily form an opinion) of each and every series that is covered in the book. The series that the book covers include the following:

    * Angel - This series was supposed to be the answer to the recently ended series I Love Lucy, except in this series, the wife was the foreign one with the accent (French, to be specific) and the husband was the American born half. The series focuses on Angie (Annie Farge) trying to adapt to life in America.
    * The Bill Dana Show - Bill Dana plays a Mexican immigrant trying to adjust to life in America (clearly, series like this were a big theme at the time).
    * The Governor and J.J. - Late '60s sitcom about the private and public life of a governor and his daughter.
    * The Great Gildersleeve - A series about a man raising his niece and her young brother who is always seeking romance, but can't seem to get a wife.
    * Grindl - Anthology-style sitcom starring Imogene Coco, a maid and housekeeper who takes different jobs every week, and ends up in different circumstances.
    * Happy - Early '60s sitcom that brings viewers inside the head of a baby who can seemingly talk (although the world around him doesn't hear him talk, think of the movie Look Who's Talking.
Hennesey - Early '60s sitcom that showed both the funny and serious world of the Navy.
    * Hey, Jeannie! / The Jeannie Carson Show - Musical comedy that tells the story of a young woman arriving to America from Scotland.
    * How to Marry a Millionaire - Based upon the film of the same title, three women are going through any means necessary to find the man of their dreams, specifically a rich one. Barbara Eden is one of the golddiggers (for the lack of a better word) of this series.
    * Ichabod and Me - A Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher written series that, in the style of Newhart or the '80s film Funny Farm, takes a big city newspaper writer and his five-year-old son to a small New Hampshire town.
    * I'm Dickens... He's Fenster - Duo played by John Astin and Marty Ingels perform slapstick-style comedy in this series where they work in the construction business.
    * It's a Great Life - Francis Bavier plays a widow who rents a room in her home to two young men who have just returned home from the Army.
    * It's About Time - Sherwood Schwartz sitcom about two astronauts who made a bad turn and ended up back in the days of cavemen, leading to confusion and chaos, much like his earlier series, Gilligan's Island.
    * The Jim Backus Show: Hot Off the Wire - Series about a two-bit newspaper wire staff that will do almost anything to stay ahead of the game.
    * Love on a Rooftop - A series from Screen Gems, produced by Harry Ackerman, about a young couple that finds love, despite her wealthy background and his poor background.
    * Margie - A sitcom in the vein of Happy Days or The Wonder Years that goes back in time, to the 1920s to be specific, to tell the story of a 17-year-old girl growing up.
    * McKeever and the Colonel - This series was The Phil Silvers Show meets Dennis the Menace, as it tells the story of three mischievous adolescents in military school.
    * Meet Mr. McNutley / The Ray Milland Show - A simple sitcom about a college professor and his wife, created by Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher.
    * The Mickey Rooney Show: Hey Mulligan - Before 30 Rock's Kenneth the Page, there was the IBC studio's page, Mickey, who is just as clumsy as the similar character on 30 Rock.
    * Mr. Adams and Eve - Ida Lupino and Howard Duff, husband and wife in real-life, play a husband and wife who play a husband in the movies.
    * Mr. Terrific - An ordinary man is recruited by the government to take a pill that gives him extraordinary strenth.
    * Mrs. G. Goes to College / The Gertrude Berg Show - Series where Gertrude Berg plays a woman in her 60s going to college for the first time.
    * My Hero - A real-estate salesman who can never seem to make his quotas manages to keep his job because he saved his boss' life a few years ago--his hero.
    * O.K. Crackerby! - An Oklahoma billionaire and his family strive to make it into high society by any means necessary.
    * Occasional Wife - A man and woman create a phony backstory and pretend to live a married life to go further in their own lives.
    * The People's Choice - A sitcom about a man who travels the country for his job and has a talking dog (voiced by Mary Jane Croft).
    * Pete and Gladys - Harry Morgan and Cara Williams star in this spinoff of December Bride.
    * Peter Loves Mary - A married couple from the entertainment business in New York City settle down in a small Connecticut town.
    * The Tom Ewell Show - A sitcom about a suffering father in a female world with his wife and three daughters.
    * Wendy and Me - An attempt by George Burns (he also stars in the series) to recreate a sitcom similar to Burns and Allen after his wife Gracie Allen retired from the previous series.

These are very rare series, as I myself had only heard of less than five of them. Tucker provides interesting insight into each series, complete with quotes from episodes and still photographs from each of the series. He gives details of specific episodes, behind-the-scenes information, audience reception, impact on future television, and more in his insights. The series peaked my interest in many series, although given the "lost" nature of each of these series, it is unlikely that I will ever be able to see most of them (although an episode of Mrs. G. Goes to College did show up on Shout! Factory's release of The Goldbergs).

Everything in the book is carefully sourced, with a complete bibliography in the back of the book. There is also an index in the back of the book to help you find anything that you may be looking for, and an appendix with a chronological listing of the series (the chapters are presented in alphabetical order by the series titles).

Fans of sitcoms of the golden age would want to read this book. Never before has anybody compiled so many details about these truly lost series, and the book is a very interesting read. Of course, I'm sure that there are more than just thirty series that Tucker could have written about, and he also hints in the introduction that a future book may come along some day about lost sitcoms beyond the decades covered here. I would love to read such a book, and hope that he (or somebody) writes a book of that nature in the future.

WGN America Long Term Pick-Ups, Munsters/Addams Family Halloween Marathon; CBS Orders Full Seasons of NCIS LA, Good Wife

We previously announced that 30 Rock and Entourage were coming to WGN America in Fall 2011 and Fall 2010 respectively, now they have announced other deals officially. They have announced that they have also acquired How I Met Your Mother, Old Christine and Curb Your Enthusiasm for Fall 2010. How I Met Your Mother and Old Christine will be shared with Lifetime, while 30 Rock will be shared with Comedy Central. Spike TV and Comedy Central will also air Entourage. All of these are first time in syndication and they have spent a lot of money for these off-network deals, but they will be shared with other networks so the price tag is down for both parties and that the other networks don't see WGN America as a strong competitor in the general entertainment realm. WGN America is focusing on contemporary sitcom fare with a little more edge.
But they still will have classic TV! In fact this Halloween, WGN America will have marathons of The Munsters and Addams Family! The Munsters marathon will air on Friday, October 30 from 4pm-12am ET (1pm-9pm PT). That's 16 classic episodes! And on Halloween itself (Saturday, October 31) spends the day with The Addams Family with a marathon from 3pm-12am ET (12pm-9pm PT). That's an hour more than The Munsters as we get 18 classic episodes!
View the episode info for each marathon.

Summer Week 13 Sitcom Ratings; Blog DVD Review: NCIS - The Sixth Season (Aug. 25)

Summer continues and everything is still pretty light. We will be back with our normal weekly report with the first four nights numbers and analysis in the fall, but we still will have our regular how the sitcoms did all summer long, along with last year's summer favorite, the coming week preview! Here are our summer ratings:

Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for week of August 10-16)

    • Til Death (Fox) - A repeat at 7pm only mustered 1.72 million...but up slightly week-to-week...after going going down slightly the previous week.
    • The Simpsons (Fox) 2 episodes - We got double dose of repeats this week with the regular 8pm airing getting 4.74 million, a big boost from normal! Why? because a special 7:30pm repeat was the lead-in and did 2.71 million, much better than the usual American Dad 7:30pm repeat.
    • King of the Hill (Fox) - preempted.
    • Family Guy (Fox) 3 episodes - A mini marathon from 8:30pm-10pm did decent for repeats. 8:30pm repeat did 4.91 million, while the regular 9pm airing did 5.3 million for a repeat. A 9:30pm repeat did 5.03 million. 2.4, 2.5 and 2.3 A18-49 ratings as well. Very solid for repeats these days.
    • American Dad! (Fox) - preempted.

    Summer Week 13 (August 17-23)

    Monday Sitcoms

    • How I Met Your Mother (CBS) 2 episodes - 4.28 million for a repeat airing in its normal 8pm slot, down from previous week. 1.4 A18-49 rating was also down as the previous week. A repeat at 8:30pm did worse with 4.22 million and a 1.5 A19-49 rating, both lower than the usual Rules of Engagement repeats from this summer in this slot.
    • Two and a Half Men (CBS) - 8.55 million for a repeat, down a bit from previous week. 2.5 A18-49 rating was up though by a bit from previous week.
    • The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - 8.04 million for a repeat is down from previous week. when it has the closest retention yet in total viewers from the lead-in. 2.7 18-49 rating is excellent, though down a tenth from previous week...but still up .2 from the lead-in! This is the sitcom to watch in the fall.
    Tuesday Sitcoms

    • None.
    Wednesday Sitcoms

    • Old Christine (CBS) - Only 3.82 million for a repeat, up some from previous week and up a tenth also in A18-49 rating with a 1.1 rating...up from previous few weeks.
    • Gary Unmarried (CBS) - Only 3.73 million...on par really from previous week again, and the same A18-49 with a 1.2 rating from previous week.
    Thursday Sitcoms

    • The Office (NBC) - 3.28 million for a repeat at 9pm...up a tad from previous week.
    • 30 Rock (NBC) 2 episodes - 3.07 and 3.04 million for repeats at 8 and 9:30pm...8pm did better than previous week weeks, while 9:30pm was basically on par.
    • Parks & Recreation (NBC) - A repeat did just 2.37 million at 8:30pm...the lowest of the sitcom repeats again.

    Friday Sitcoms

    • Everybody Hates Chris (The CW) - A repeat at 9pm did a prelim 964,000 viewers. That was down from previous week's prelim numbers.
    • The Game (The CW) - A repeat did a prelim 1.2 million, also down from previous week's prelim numbers.
    Saturday Sitcoms

    • According to Jim (ABC) - A one-time-only repeat at 8pm did a prelim 3.14 million (could change due to NFL preemptions). This was the last network airing of the show on ABC.
Tonight you can catch encores of Fox's 'Til Death and animated comedies from 7-10pm. Elsewhere ABC has the finale of the 10th anniversary of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? with Regis at 8pm leading into a new Shark Tank and an all-new episode of drama Defying Gravity at 10pm. CBS has 60 Minutes & Big Brother followed by a new episode of There Goes the Neighborhood at 9pm, while NBC will have two episodes of Merlin at starting at 7pm, followed by Miss Universe at 9.

    Coming Week Preview (Aug. 24-30):

I'm going to have to preempt this section for a blog DVD review again.

It is time for a special Sunday edition of the "Blog DVD Review." Today we we take a look at CBS DVD's Sixth Season of Navy NCIS. See Seth Thrasher's blog DDVD review of NCIS - The Sixth Season and:

NCIS - The Sixth Season (CBS, $55.98) is now on DVD. This season finds the highly skilled NCIS team still under the able command of Special Agent Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), an uncompromising leader who will see justice done -- even if it means bending the rules. This season, Gibbs starts out welcomes two new members to the unit, wile directing the veteran agents in their dangerous investigations outside the chain of Naval and Marine command. Co-starring Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette, David McCallum, Sean Murray, Cote de Pablo, and Rocky Carroll, this six-disc set includes all 25 action-packed Season Six episodes.

After last season's awesome cliffhanger, fans were left wondering why the team had been split up. The answers are provided in the first episode of the season, Last Man Standing -- when it's revealed that there was in fact a traitor in their midst -- the agents assigned to Gibbs are in fact the suspects. The storyline, while appearing to be resolved to the main characters, ultimately comes back later in the season. One of the nice things about NCIS in particular is the way that storylines branch out from one episode to the next. It's one of the things (quality of characters is another) that sets this apart from other similar series in the genre. This plot arc style would surface in a larger way in the series final few episodes, as more and more questions arise over the loyalty of Ziva. At the season's end, Gibbs' boat is no more, the team presumes Ziva to be back working in Israel, and in the final shots...Ziva has been taken captive and is being asked what she knows about NCIS.

In terms of the technical side of the set, the packaging is as always an outer box containing slimcases -- three cases holding six discs this season. The discs feature the standard silver look of Paramount/CBS releases. Box art features Gibbs (Harmon) in the foreground, with the remainder of the cast members each occupying a narrow vertical bar behind him. The rear cover's photo has the entire cast posed in a white room, all wearing various elegant clothing.

Menus are well-designed but static, with no music in the background. Each main menu features the white room featured on the rear cover, with a photo of one of the cast members. Each disc's main menu features a different member of the team.
In regards to audio and video, a great thing about working with newer series is that the video quality and audio quality are great almost by default. This set is no exception -- the video looks flawless in its presentation. Color balance is nice and even, there are no compression artifacts, there are no problems in the transfer -- nothing. Audio is a crisp and clear 5.1 audio track. The only way this show's presentation could be nicer would be for the show to appear on one of the high-definition video formats. You get the usual disclaimer about how some episodes might be edited, but the only thing I noticed was that, as always, the "Next time on NCIS" bumpers are gone. More than likely, in an era of pre-negotiated DVD rights, that disclaimer is just for legal purposes. I highly doubt anything substantive is cut.

And since NCIS is a popular series currently airing on TV, that means more effort goes into the bonuses on a release. It's always nice to review a set whose DVD presentation isn't half-baked. There are SEVEN special features, including cast and crew commentaries, a tour of the company that creates the bodies used on the show, a feature on the season's opening arc, a feature revolving around the season episode "South By Southwest," two pieces with the cast and crew reflecting on the season, as well as a special feature in which Pauley Perrette *sings*. All great stuff to sit through and watch/listen to. The commentaries in particular are interesting to listen to -- I just wish there were more than the three included on the set. The three episodes with commentary are "Broken Bird" (commentary by David McCallum and James Whitmore Jr.), "Bounce”" (commentary by Michael Weatherly), and "Toxic" (commentary by Pauley Perrette and Sean Murray.)

I was fortunate to have a former roommate of mine get me hooked on the show early on. There are as mentioned still viewers, six years on, who haven't come to understand what a quality series this is. Perhaps, they're scared off by the basic framework of the typical crime procedural. The show does feature those elements, but they're secondary to the story elements themselves -- the plot (yes, NCIS does typically feature an actual plot) and characters (the show has some of the best on broadcast TV right now). Others might be a little weary over the military aspect. The series was a spin-off of JAG, a series that I'll be the first to admit was neck-deep in the military aspect. On NCIS, it provides the setting and back-story, but unlike JAG it's typically only a minor to intermediate part of any plot -- in most episodes, anyway.

If you're reading this and you aren't really a fan, I'd like to ask you to give the show a chance. USA Network runs the show approximately a billion times per week, so if you're dedicated you can pretty much catch the entire run in about a week. Exaggeration aside you *can*, in one week's time on USA you can catch a large quantity of episodes to sample, and I urge you to do so. I think that if you give the show a fair chance, you'll come to really enjoy it.
Those of you who already enjoy it? This set streets on Tuesday, and if you don't have it pre-ordered you know what you should be doing as soon as it's financially sound to do so. This set wants a place in your DVD collection, and it most certainly deserves it. Strong recommendation.
