Black Comedy Revolution Doc to Air on A&E; MTV Movie & TV Awards to Air on Multiple Nets

A&E Network will premiere the new two-part documentary event Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution exploring the progression of Black comedy and the comedians who have used pointed humor to expose, challenge and ridicule society's injustices and to articulate the Black experience in America. Executive produced by Kevin Hart's HARTBEAT and TIME Studios, the documentary explores Black comedy through a unique lens, tracing the evolution and social awakening of the courageous comedians who dared to push against the constraints of their time and spoke truth to power. Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution is co-directed by Mario Diaz and Jessica Sherif and premieres Wednesday, June 29 at 9pm ET/PT and Thursday, June 30 at 9pm ET/PT on A&E. Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution will also be available on demand and to stream on the A&E app and aetv.com.
The documentary traces the history of Black comedy and its under-appreciated legacy of driving social change across the 20th and 21st centuries. From Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley and Dick Gregory during the civil rights movement, Richard Pryor in the 70s, Eddie Murphy and Whoopi Goldberg in the 80s, to the power of In Living Color and Def Comedy Jam in the 90s, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle in the 2000s and groundbreaking modern-day comedians and creators like Key & Peele, Issa Rae, Amber Ruffin and Tiffany Haddish. Across four hours, Right to Offend explores the rare position these artists and many more hold in our society as both entertainers and truth tellers that speak to audiences in ways no other performers can.
Featuring interviews with some of the greatest comedy minds of all time (including Jimmie Walker, Marsha Warfield and many more) as well as a rich collection of archival material, the two-part event reveals the personal stories and tribulations faced by many Black performers in attaining greater acceptance and opening the doors for a true representation of the Black experience. The documentary also traces how each generation of comedians built upon the foundations created by their predecessors to help evolve and push the boundaries of comedy as a means for social change and fought for a greater definition and understanding of what it means to be Black in America.

A&E and Lifetime Upfront 2017; Kevin James Gets Netflix Comedy Special for 2018
A&E Networks had their upfront last night. Lifetime's mission to lead entertainment through female-centric storytelling continues with the greenlight of three new high-profile movies: Flint, starring Cher; Watcher in the Woods, starring Anjelica Huston; and I Am Elizabeth Smart featuring Elizabeth Smart as executive producer and on-screen narrator. Supporting Lifetime's new brand mantra, "Possibility is Power," forthcoming movie and series tent poles reimagine what is possible for women today while championing diverse role models and celebrating our evolving and complex ideas of womanhood. No one does this better than Cat Deeley and her new unscripted series at Lifetime, This Time Next Year, along with fierce television and fashion personality Yolanda Hadid in her new unscripted series to premiere later this year, Model Moms (wt).
Meanwhile at A&E, the iconic, genre-defining series which won countless industry awards, Biography, is returning to A+E Networks after five years as a re-imagined global, linear and digital non-fiction franchise. The Emmy Award-winning Biography, which will focus on meaningful events or personalities and their impact on our culture, will begin to roll out on A&E, HISTORY and Lifetime domestically and internationally across all platforms beginning this spring. Initial projects under the Biography banner include Biggie Smalls, Vladimir Putin, Tupac Shakur, John Gotti Jr., Elizabeth Smart, Mike Tyson and David Koresh.
Kevin James is returning to his stand-up roots with an all-new comedy special for Netflix, the world's leading Internet TV network. The veteran comic's latest special, slated to shoot later this year, will launch globally on Netflix in 2018. A comedian, producer, writer and Emmy-nominated actor, James is an established and well-respected staple in entertainment today. Discovered at the 1996 Montreal Comedy Festival -- and unwittingly taking the first step in what would become an illustrious career -- he signed a network development deal which lead to the creation of his 1998 CBS smash-hit The King of Queens. The sitcom, starring and executive-produced by James, ran for nine seasons and garnered the actor a 2006 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. While Queens wrapped its run in 2007, it still continues to air daily and find a new audience in syndication around the world. James currently stars in and executive-produces the CBS sitcom Kevin Can Wait, which debuted in 2016. He'll next appear in the Netflix original film Sandy Wexler, launching globally April 14.

Enter the perfect family life of a General Insurance agent Jim Anderson. Beginning in 1954, Jim would come home from his office, take off his sports jacket, put on his comfortable sweater, and deal with the everyday problems of a growing family without breaking a sweat. His picture perfect wife Margaret is a vibrant mother of three – Betty, Bud and Kathy. To the millions who watched the six-time Primetime Emmy®-winning Father Knows Best, starring Robert Young and Jane Wyatt; Elinor Donahue, Bill Gray and Lauren Chapin, this long running TV sitcom not only captured the hearts of American viewers, but also stood as the representation of mid-century traditional family values. In 1949, Father Knows Best? first premiered as a NBC radio sitcom. The series star Robert Young and producer Eugene B. Rodney transplanted the popular radio series into television (minus the question mark in the show’s title). The TV sitcom Father Knows Best premiered on CBS in October 1954 and has been part of the American cultural fabric ever since.
A&E Network has ordered twenty episodes of the acclaimed drama series, Bates Motel from Universal Television. New episodes of Bates Motel will begin production later this year and will air over two seasons, starting in 2016. Bates Motel has garnered a truly loyal fan base over the past three seasons. Vera Farmiga (Up In The Air, The Conjuring) in her Emmy-nominated role as Norma Bates, and Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) as Norman star alongside Max Thieriot (Disconnect, Texas Rising), Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) and Nestor Carbonell (Lost, The Dark Knight Rises). Bates Motel serves as a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film Psycho and provides viewers with an intimate portrayal of how Norman Bates unravels through his teenage years.
Kevin Rahm (Mad Men, Desperate Housewives), Tracy Spiradakos (Revolution) and Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) joined the series this season and have arrived in White Pine Bay. After a summer of living at the Bates Motel, Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) and Norma have grown closer but there will always have that troubling question mark surrounding Norman. Something doesn't feel right, but spite of his instincts, Romero finds himself continually drawn back to the Bates family -- and to Norma. Emma (Olivia Cooke) also determined to find out what is happening to Norman becomes more emboldened, fearless, goes after the things she wants. Familiar face, Bradley (Nicola Peltz) returns to surprise the family and digs up old memories.

A&E, Lifetime Upfront 2015; IFC Orders New Comedy with David Krumholtz
A+E Networks held their annual upfront presentation and party late last week and made a number of significant programming announcements on new event series, new series, and new digital-only series. We'll cover some of that here today. A&E has a new drama coming up called Damien, that follows the adult life of Damien Thorn, the mysterious child from the 1976 motion picture who has grown up seemingly unaware of the satanic forces around him. Damien stars Bradley James as Damien Thorn (Homeland), along with Oscar® nominee Barbara Hershey (Once Upon a Time), Omid Abtahi (Better Call Saul) and Meganlyn Echikunwoke (House of Lies). HISTORY, A&E and LIFETIME greenlight the scripted event series Roots for a new generation of viewers to simulcast on all three flagship brands. Will Packer (Ride Along, Think Like A Man) joins as executive producer and original Roots cast member and Emmy-award winning LeVar Burton boards as co-executive producer. The event will air in 2016. Lifetime of course has new series UnReal coming up, launching June 1. The drama stars Shiri Appleby (Girls) and Constance Zimmer (House of Cards, Entourage) and gives a fictitious behind-the-scenes glimpse into the chaos surrounding the production of a dating competition program.
And finally, Lifetime, A&E Network and HISTORY are partnering with The Weinstein Company, BBC Cymru Wales and BBC Worldwide/Lookout Point on a major limited series event based on Leo Tolstoy's enduring novel War and Peace. Simulcasting in the U.S. on the three networks in 2016, War and Peace will feature an all-star cast including SAG Award® and Film Independent Spirit Award winner Paul Dano (12 Years a Slave, Little Miss Sunshine), Lily James (Cinderella, Downton Abbey), Golden Globe® winner Gillian Anderson (The X Files, Hannibal), Oscar®, James Norton (Happy Valley, Rush), Golden Globe and BAFTA winner Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge!, Iris) and others. Back to Lifetime, season three of Devious Maids will launch on June 1, as previously announced.
IFC is joining Gigi on her ultimate adventures with the newly greenlit comedy, Gigi's Bucket List, starring David Krumholtz (This Is The End, Numb3rs, 10 Things I Hate About You). Gertrude Rotblum, aka "Gigi," just lost her beloved husband Harold, but has gained a new lease on life with the help of an unknown bank account discovered in his will. Eight half-hour episodes start shooting this June in Los Angeles. The show will premiere later in 2015 on IFC. With her dead husband's secret millions, this 76-year-old yenta with a heart of gold and a razor-sharp tongue sets out to experience everything she deprived herself of in her younger years. Gigi (Krumholtz) will live life to its fullest and fastest while ignoring doctor's orders and turning the stigmas of aging on their head. She will travel to rock festivals and explore new technologies like online dating, with her trusty male nurse sidekick played by Ricky Mabe (Goon, Zach & Miri Make A Porno) along for the ride.

Everything else during weekdays remains the same, including A Different World in the 10pm & 1am hours.
The Saturday morning sitcom block will get a little change, too, starting Saturday, June 19. The Jeffersons moves into the 7am hour replacing The Hughleys, while That's My Mama returns to the schedule and will air in the 10am hour replacing The Jeffersons.

Stay with us for any further updates on TV One June 2010!
A&E had their upfront yesterday and announced several original series. We won't cover them all, but there are new unscripted series featuring TV stars like David Hasselhoff, Bob Saget, and Tony Danza.
For the David Hasselhoff series, in between stints on TV (Knight Rider, Baywatch), starring roles on Broadway, live performances and business ventures that have taken him worldwide, David Hasselhoff is also a single dad, raising two teenage daughters, Taylor-Ann, 19, and Hayley, 17, who both are aspiring singers. The series will follow David as he steps in and out of the limelight, assumes the role of ultimate "stage dad" for his daughters as he tries to utilize his connections in order to help them break into the recording industry, and we'll find out ultimately who is running the show in "The Hoff" household. The series is set to premiere this Fall and will have 10 half-hour episodes.
Then next a series with Bob Saget (Full House, Surviving Suburbia)! Bob Saget takes his unflinching, comedic observations about offbeat lifestyles on the road in the new series Strange Days with Bob Saget. He'll immerse himself in cultures, practices, and occupations that few people have ever experienced, and always with hilarious and thought-provoking results. One week, Bob will be riding 1500 miles in a sidecar with some hardcore bikers, the next he will be deep inside the forest as part of mass expedition looking for Bigfoot, another week he will be living for a week as a fraternity brother at one of the nations most acclaimed universities. Through his firsthand encounters, viewers will get an intimate look at a wide variety of subcultures, and with Bob Saget's unique blend of heart and humor, this show will not only make us laugh but make us reevaluate our perceptions of why people do the things they do. The series will air later this year and will have 6 one-hour episodes.
And finally A&E will team up with Tony Danza (Taxi, Who's the Boss?)! After more than 30 years in entertainment as an actor, talk show host, Broadway star, cookbook author, pro boxer and song and dance man, Tony Danza faces his toughest audience to date - high school students - in the series Teach: Tony Danza. Long before the launch of Danza's showbiz career, he hoped to be a teacher and even earned a degree in history to pursue that dream. Teach: Tony Danza chronicles Danza's journey as he returns to his original dream and takes on the role of English teacher for a class of sophomore students at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. Danza must do some learning of his own as he adapts to the demands of teaching two back-to-back 45 minute periods and handling his diverse class of students of varying abilities. He must also learn to manage extra-curricular activities, charity events and to juggle his personal life throughout the school year. Viewers will experience the trials and tribulations of a first year teacher through the eyes of Danza, his peers, school administrators, and most importantly... his students. The series will air later this year and will have 7 one-hour episodes.
A&E has solidified its place as the fourth largest entertainment cable network among adults 18-49, continuing its phenomenal ratings growth behind the strength of the network's Real Life Drama brand and expansive slate of original series. Commitment to original programming targeting younger adult audiences has been paramount to A&E's success. Season-to-date, A&E has 55% original programs in primetime, significantly more than any other top-tier entertainment cable network - TBS (15%), TNT (14%), USA (12%) and FX (11%). In 2009, A&E's twelve original series returning in 2010 averaged a 40 median age, a remarkable 19 years younger than the median age of A&E's original series in 2003.

Criminal Minds Details For A&E Starting in May; According to Jim Season Finale Moved to May 27
We are pleased to give you the exclusive full details on the weekly play starting in May! The show will air Fridays at 11PM ET/PT with an encore later at night at 3AM ET/PT. Both airings will follow mini-marathons of CSI: Miami. The weekly play starts Friday, May 30 on A&E! So you can catch the show from the very first episode.
Veteran sitcom According to Jim was scheduled for two all-new episodes next Tuesday (May 6), but ABC will preempt it for Dancing with the Stars: Judges' All-Time Top 10 special from 8-9pm on May 6 leading into the 100th episode of Dancing with the Stars on a very special Dancing with the Stars: The Results! Fan favorites and Season Four champions Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough reunite for a special performance, while Season Five standout Mel B. hits the dance floor with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Other stars joining the celebration include Sabrina Bryan, Joey Fatone, Master P., Jerry Rice, Jane Seymour, Jerry Springer, Wayne Newton and many more. Also, Season Two finalist Mario Lopez returns to the ballroom as "Macy's Stars of Dance" presents "A Chorus Line." Mario is currently starring in the Broadway production of the hugely successful musical.
Anyway, May 13 was supposed to be the season finale of According to Jim, but the two preempted May 6 episodes will air on May 13 now instead and ABC will move those two season finale episodes out of sweeps to Tuesday, May 27. ABC has not announced what will air May 20, but it will likely be a Dancing with the Stars recap leading into the two-hour grand finale.
For those of you wondering, Cheryl and Dana return to According to Jim on the next episode airing May 13! So it will be a good end to the final four episodes of the season. The show will return sometime in 2008-09 as According to Jim is taping new episodes in late May and June for next season. Possibly the final 6 episodes. We should know by upfront.

A Different World Joins BET Line-Up On April 28; ION and A&E Acquire Criminal Minds for Fall 2009
A Different World comes from the same deal that Nick at Nite/The N had, so it is all Viacom related, as BET is also part of Viacom. The show will get a mini-marathon as well on Saturday, May 3 from 8:30pm-11pm. In addition to the weeknight airings, the show will also get a weekly three episode evening block on Sundays. The times vary, but the first Sunday (May 4) it will be 8p-9:30p. Future Sunday times are tentative, but here are the times as of now for May: 7p-8:30pm on May 11, 6:30p-8pm on May 18 and 8:30p-10:00pm on May 25.
There is one slight other change to the schedule as well. BET will remove the Sundays 12-1pm Sanford airings starting Sunday, May 4. Instead two episodes of The Parkers will air Sundays 12-1pm. Not to fear, Sanford will still air late Saturday nights (early Sunday mornings), usually 3-4am.
ION Television today announced it has entered into a content agreement with CBS Television Distribution for the broadcast syndication rights to the hit television drama series, Criminal Minds starring Mandy Patinkin and Joe Mantegna. ION Television will debut this popular show in prime time beginning in Fall 2009. The deal continues the network's positioning momentum as a general entertainment destination.
Criminal Minds joins recent additions, including Boston Legal & M*A*S*H coming to ION off-network this Fall, as well as The Steve Harvey Show, Family Feud and Quantum Leap, currently airing in ION Television's expanded entertainment schedule.
ION will have their annual upfront presentation a week from today (Thursday, May 1). We will bring you the latest from that next week...and we hope to get an interview with them regarding their future. Also, B&C is reporting in addition to Criminal Minds, ION will also acquire off-network reruns of Ghost Whisperer starring Jennifer Love Hewitt from CBS Television Distribution also starting in Fall 2009. We will bring you the official announcement on that when available! It'll probably be at upfront.
In addition to coming to ION in Fall 2009, Criminal Minds will also get a cable home! A&E Television has bought the cable rights to the series beginning in Fall 2009, where it will air five-days a week. However, before that, A&E has rights to air the series once a week starting with season one and through season three. The once a week play starts next month (May) on A&E. We will bring you the exact times and dates as soon as A&E announces that. A&E will have their upfront presentation next week as well, so we should know very soon.
