TCA Winter 2013 Press Tour: Cable; Sitcom Stars on Talk Shows (Week of January 7, 2013)

It's that time again, the winter portion of the TCA press tour. The TCA Winter 2013 press tour begins today with cable leading it off for two straight days at the Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, California. Among the cable networks going today are HBO and Turner networks like TNT and TBS. Starting with HBO, they announced a new comedy titled Family Tree premiering this spring. Having recently lost his job and his girlfriend, 30-year-old Tom Chadwick has a rather unsure sense of his own identity. But when he inherits a mysterious box of belongings from a great aunt he never met, Tom starts investigating his lineage and uncovers a whole world of unusual stories and characters, acquiring a growing sense of who he and his real family are. Written and created by Christopher Guest and Jim Piddock, the new comedy series Family Tree is a single-camera, documentary-style show in the manner of Guest's acclaimed feature films (such as Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman and A Mighty Wind). Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids) stars as Tom Chadwick in the HBO presentation, along with Tom Bennett and Nina Conti. Meanwhile, A&E announced it will premiere the new original scripted drama series Bates Motel from executive producers Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) on Monday, March 18 at 10 PM ET/PT. Bates Motel is a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film Psycho, and promises to give viewers an intimate portrayal of how Norman Bates' psyche unravels through his teenage years. Fans will have access to the dark, twisted backstory of Norman Bates and how deeply intricate his relationship with his mother, Norma, truly is. The series stars Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Departed), Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland), Max Thieriot, Olivia Cooke and Nicola Peltz (The Last Airbender). Season one also co-stars Nestor Carbonell (Lost, The Dark Knight Rises) and Mike Vogel (Pan Am).
TBS and TNT announced plans to bring in some reality fare to its line-ups of comedies and dramas, respectively. They will launch five reality series over the next six months. TBS start it off with comedic reality entry King Of The Nerds this month then Who Gets The Last Laugh this Spring. TNT will have Boston's Finest in February and then The Hero and 72 Hours, both in May. All of these series fit their brand TBS (comedic) and TNT (dramatic). Don't forget the comedy Cougar Town returns with an all-new season now on TBS starting this Tuesday at 10pm! TNT will launch a new medical drama titled Monday Mornings, beginning Monday, February 4, that is based on Dr. Sanjay Gupta's book and personal experiences.

Look ahead: Cable will continue tomorrow, as we mentioned above, with networks like Discovery, Starz, BBC America, and Viacom Networks like TV Land. NBC Universal will start the broadcast portion off on Sunday and will continue on Monday. As usual, Fox will be second among broadcast and will go on Tuesday, while cable sibling FX will go on Wednesday. Thursday has ABC and its cable counterpart ABC Family up. On Friday (Jan, 11), ABC and ABC Family will conclude their portion. Next Saturday (Jan. 12) it will be CBS and Showtime's turn, while next Sunday (Jan. 13) has The CW to end the broadcast portion. Stay with us for key updates from these events.
