Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's another slow news week, but we're hearing (a little) more about the fall season that will begin who knows when, learning of the end of Cops and Live PD, and more. Let's get going!

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

As we enter the summer months, sitcoms on TV are increasingly rare to find, and more so now than we're entering a COVID age. So I thought I'd spend this column talking about Rick and Morty, an animated comedy that technically doesn't fit the sitcom bill, but is still one of the most popular comedic shows on TV today. Rick and Morty is Adult Swim's flagship series, a time travel, sci-fi sitcom from the minds of Justin Roiland and Community creator Dan Harmon. The series quickly grew to extreme popularity, with it becoming Adult Swim's highest-rated series of all time by its third season. And yet, the show has only produced 4 seasons and 40 episodes since being on the air in 2014, a slow rollout schedule that has somewhat complicated its' fans fervent relationship with it. Granted, TV is gradually moving towards more sporadic releases rather than the clockwork-like scheduling it adhered to for years, but this seems like a lot even for that.

Rick and Morty's fourth season was split up into two 5-episode short seasons, one airing in late 2019 and one starting in May, just finishing last week. The season overall was very solid, with some highlight episodes that could stand up with the best of the series, as well as some disappointing episodes - fairly standard for a comedy in its fourth season. But given the sporadic release schedule and how every episode now feels like an event, getting a "regular old" season feels a bit disappointing. And the show seems to be starting to recycle some of the same patterns (Rick is a jerk, kind of learns that he shouldn't be, then goes back to being a jerk again). This season also moved away from the long-term storytelling that marked much of its second and third seasons. Still, for all of these flaws, Rick and Morty remained one of the funniest and move inventive comedies, even if it's not quite as perfect as it was at the start, and still made me wish and hope we can start getting episodes on a more consistent basis.

HBO Max announced that it has picked up its first scripted original series Love Life for a second season. Audiences love Love Life, the romantic comedy anthology series from Lionsgate Television that has quickly become one of the streaming platform's top performers out of all available content, and this is the first Max Original to earn a renewal. Season one stars Oscar® nominee Anna Kendrick, and its final four episodes are now available to stream on HBO Max. Season two will remain set in New York City but will focus on a new character’s journey – one which explores what happens when you've lived your whole life knowing who your soulmate is, only to find out years into a marriage that it's not the right fit at all. The new season will also cleverly key off characters in season one, and "Darby" (Anna Kendrick) will appear occasionally.

Hulu has announced slight premiere dates changes for two series: This coming June 19 -- Juneteenth -- will mark 155 years since slavery was abolished in America. This date represents an important turning point for our nation and for human rights, and we believe that now, more than ever, it deserves to have its own day in the spotlight. For this reason, we are shifting the premiere dates for our new original series, Love, Victor and Taste the Nation, to June 17 and 18, respectively. Love, Victor, the upcoming comedy series inspired by the groundbreaking 2018 film Love, Simon, follows Victor, a new student at Creekwood High School on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation. When it all seems too much, he reaches out to Simon to help him navigate the ups and downs of high school. The film's original writers Isaac Aptaker (This Is Us) and Elizabeth Berger (This Is Us) serve as executive producers alongside Brian Tanen (Grand Hotel), Jason Ensler (The Passage), Isaac Klausner (The Hate U Give), Marty Bowen (First Man), Adam Fishbach (Narcos), Wyck Godfrey (I, Robot), Pouya Shahbazian (Divergent) and Adam Londy. The show stars Michael Cimino (Anabelle Comes Home) as Victor alongside Ana Ortiz (Whiskey Cavalier, Devious Maids, Ugly Betty) as Isabel, Victor's smart and warm mother who loves her husband and her family, but is under a lot of pressure as they move their family across the country.

In Taste the Nation, award winning cookbook author, host and executive producer Padma Lakshmi, takes audiences on a journey across America, exploring the rich and diverse food culture of various immigrant groups, seeking out the people who have so heavily shaped what American food is today. From indigenous communities to recent immigrant arrivals, Padma breaks bread with Americans across the nation to uncover the roots and relationship between our food, our humanity and our history - ultimately revealing stories that challenge notions of identity, belonging, and what it means to be American.

Amid historic upheaval across the nation around issues of race and policing, ABC will present an encore presentation of John Ridley's 2017 critically acclaimed feature-length documentary that examines the 1992 uprising in Los Angeles after the verdict was announced in the Rodney King case. Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992 gives viewers crucial insight into one of the most significant, defining incidents in the history of race relations in this country at a time when it is so important to understand what events have led to the current national crisis. The encore presentation of Let It Fall features a special introduction and message from John Legend on Tuesday, June 16 from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. EDT on ABC. 

In deference to recent cultural and societal events Variety and Lifetime have postponed the one-hour special, Lifetime Presents Variety's Power of Women: Frontline Heroes, which celebrates the brave women serving on the frontlines of the pandemic, to now air Thursday, June 25 at 10:00PM ET/PT on Lifetime and Facebook. Virtually hosted by Good Morning America's Robin Roberts, the special will be simultaneously broadcast from Variety's Facebook page, and cross-posted on Lifetime's at 10PM ET/7PM PT. As part of this event, viewers on Facebook will be able to contribute directly to the Equal Justice Initiative using the Facebook donate button in the livestream. The special will also repeat on Monday, June 29 at 10pm ET/PT on Lifetime's sister network, LMN.

Lifetime Presents Variety's Power of Women: Frontline Heroes will celebrate the courageous women on the frontlines of the pandemic - including doctors, nurses, teachers, researchers, among others - who are putting themselves at risk to make a difference and working towards finding a solution in this crisis. The special will take a look at ways women are confronting domestic violence, changes to the way we educate our children, mental health, homelessness and other areas that affect our daily lives. Current and past Power of Women honorees will come together to celebrate these remarkable women, their extraordinary work, and their dedication to their communities during this incredibly challenging time.

The program will also highlight the 2020 Power of Women honorees for their professional achievements and humanitarian efforts to various causes including two-time Academy(R) Award-winning star and executive producer of the miniseries Mrs. America Cate Blanchett (UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency); Tony(R) and Grammy(R) Award-winning star and actor in the new miniseries Hollywood Patti LuPone (Broadway Cares); and eight-time Grammy(R) nominated singer and actress starring in the series Homecoming, Janelle Monáe (Local Initiative Support Corp).

Previous honorees Laverne Cox, Jennifer Garner, Tiffany Haddish, Gigi Hadid, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Nicole Kidman, Blake Lively, Eva Longoria, Helen Mirren and Natalie Portman will also pay tribute to these women through self-shot material. Additionally, the program will include a special performance by Grammy(R) Award-nominated powerhouse vocalist Andra Day.

Character actress Mary Pat Gleason, who had a recurring role in Mom and made many sitcom guest appearances, has died. She died from cancer on June 2. Ms. Gleason was 70.

Gleason's sitcom guest appearances in the 1980s and 1990s included What a Country!, Full House, Mama's Family, Frank's Place, Murphy Brown, Day by Day, Dear John, Who's the Boss?, Empty Nest, Night Court, Saved by the Bell, Perfect Strangers, Davis Rules, Nurses, The Golden Palace, Coach, Blossom, Friends, Step by Step, Dave's World, Suddenly Susan and Family Matters.

She had a recurring role as Patty, a presidential assistant, in four episodes of the 2012-2013 NBC sitcom 1600 Penn. She played Mrs. Gosnold in four episodes of the Nick at Nite/TV land sitcom Instant Mom from 2013 to 2014. Some of her later sitcom guest appearances included Sex and the City, Malcolm in the Middle, Good Luck Charlie, The Middle, 2 Broke Girls, Up All Night, Baby Daddy, Dog with a Blog, Will & Grace, American Housewife and Life in Pieces.

Gleason had a recurring role as Mary, a fellow AA member who was frequently interrupted by Bonnie (Allison Janney) when she shared her problems with the group, in the CBS sitcom Mom. She appeared in eight episodes from 2014 to 2019.

She starred as Ida in the 2008 ABC Family sci-fi drama The Middleman. Ida was soulless a android from outer space masquerading as a cranky librarian. The series also starred Matt Keeslar, Natalie Morales, Brit Morgan and Jake Smollett.

Gleason won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1986 for her work on the writing team of The Guiding Light. She also appeared in the series as Jane Hogan from 1983 to 1985.

Ms. Gleason may not have been a household name, but she was a familiar face with more than 170 TV and film credits. We thank her for the laughs and entertainment she brought us. She will be deeply missed.

We also remember actress Peggy Pope. She starred in several short-lived sitcoms and made many sitcom guest appearances. She died on May 27 in Fort Collins, Colorado. Ms. Pope was 91.

Pope starred as Elaine Fusco in the short-lived 1973 CBS sitcom Calucci's Department. The series focused on Joe Calucci (James Coco), the supervisor of a New York City unemployment office. It also starred Candy Azzara, Jose Perez, Jack Fletcher, Bill Lazarus, Bernard Wexler and Rosette LeNoire.

She played Alice Fisher, the mother of 19-year-old Billy Fisher (Steve Guttenberg), in the short-lived 1979 sitcom Billy. The series also starred James Gallery, Paula Trueman, Michael Alaimo and Bruce Talkington.

Pope had a recurring role as Mrs. David in Soap from 1979 to 1981. Some of her other sitcom guest appearances included Bewitched, Rhoda, Mork & Mindy, Barney Miller (six episodes), The Golden Girls, Too Close for Comfort, Night Court, Kate & Allie, Have Faith, Anything But Love, Empty Nest, Nurses, Room for Two and Hope & Faith.

She was perhaps best known for her role as "the office lush", and later, recovering alcoholic, Margaret Foster, in the 1980 movie 9 to 5. Her character was known for the "atta girl" line. Pope later appeared in the 9 to 5 TV series in 1982. Her other film credits included The Last Starfighter and Once Bitten.

Ms. Pope was a talented and versatile actress. We thank her for the entertainment she brought us from her TV and film roles. She will be greatly missed.



COZI TV has announced it will be airing a Leslie Jordan After Dark special for one week, starting on Monday, June 15 during the usual 1 a.m. EST Will & Grace timeslot. COZI TV will air two episodes each night that features loveable guest star, Leslie Jordan. He played the outrageous socialite Beverley Leslie during the entirety of the Will & Grace series and won an Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Comedy series for the role. Jordan's character is best known for his on-screen rivalry with frenemy Karen Walker, played by Megan Mullally.

The hit comedy series Will & Grace features actors Debra Messing as Grace Adler, Megan Mullally as Karen Walker, Eric McCormack as Will Truman and Sean Hayes as Jack McFarland. The series follows best friends Will and Grace as they navigate living together, while they deal with their eccentric friends Karen and Jack. The show originally aired on NBC starting in 1998, with the season eight finale coming in 2006. NBC brought the series back in 2017 and in April 2020 it completed its four-decade run, comprising 11 seasons, 246 episodes and earning 18 Emmy Awards. In 2017, COZI TV became the exclusive digital broadcast network of the first eight seasons.

TBS has announced Celebrity Show-Off, a unique talent competition series hosted by Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory), premiering on Tuesday, June 23 at 10:00pm ET/PT. Based on the popular Korean show My Little Television, and from the executive producer of The Masked Singer, the 10-episode remote series will turn TV and social media on their heads by transforming the variety format into an innovative experiment. Each week celebrities will be given the opportunity to see who can produce the most compelling content from the comfort of their own homes. Talent confirmed for the showcase include: Diplo, Ja Rule, Action Bronson, Gabi Butler, Dwight Howard, Travis Kelce, Nene Leakes, Jason Mraz, Kevin Smith, Tori Spelling, Bella Thorne, Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah Willis and others from every area of entertainment, sports and beyond.

In every episode of this of-the-moment variety show, five celebrities from the worlds of sports, music, comedy, TV, and film will face-off by creating quirky self-shot content that premieres online. The celebrity’s goal is to attract and engage the most online viewers to keep their digital shows "on the air" – and avoid being the channel that "goes dark." Each week, the stars will come together in an inventive high-tech virtual studio where they will screen and react to each other's content and find out who will remain in the competition. And in an innovative "twist," the lowest-performing celebrity will be replaced with a brand new surprise celebrity newcomer, adding a new layer of thrills as everyone vies for the largest internet following. The longer a celebrity stays in the competition, the more money they raise for their charity, with the last star on air earning an extra donation for their cause. 

TBS is serving up the ultimate comedic match with a seven-episode greenlight for Tournament of Laughs, set to premiere on Sunday, June 21 at 10:00pm ET/PT. Hosted by Jason Sudeikis (We're the Millers, Saturday Night Live), the series will present 32 comedians facing off in a hilarious, single-elimination bracket-style tournament, with each episode featuring multiple match-ups. The comics will go head-to-head virtually to out-funny one another with Sudeikis acting as the master of ceremonies and providing color commentary.

Featured comedians include Jeff Ross, Margaret Cho, Gilbert Gottfried, Judah Friedlander, Michael Rapaport, Jim Norton, Fortune Feimster, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Natasha Leggero, Cameron Esposito, Godfrey, The Sklar Brothers, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Josh Wolf, Clayton English, Yamaneika Saunders, Gina Yashere, Tim Dillon, Moshe Kasher, Jessica Kirson, Paul Rodriguez, Sarah Tiana, Matteo Lane, Beth Stelling, Vladimir Caamano, Ian Edwards, Aida Rodriguez, Megan Gailey, Preacher Lawson, Piff The Magic Dragon and an additional two performers to come. Each week the comics will create, produce, self-film, and star in their own videos - from stand-up sets to song parodies and everything in-between. After the episode has aired, the home audience will decide who moves forward, via phone and online voting, with the winning comics returning for the next round. The final episode will feature an expert comedy panel charged with crowning a winner in the championship match-up for the last laugh and bragging rights as tournament champion. 1931, Los Angeles. While the rest of the country struggles through the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking Pictures! Evangelical Fervor! And a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong. Based on characters created by author Erle Stanley Gardner, drama series Perry Mason, starring Emmy(R) winner Matthew Rhys, debuts Sunday, June 21 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT) exclusively on HBO. The series follows the origins of American fiction's most legendary criminal defense lawyer, Perry Mason. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason's relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself. The series will also be available to stream on HBO GO, HBO NOW, and on HBO via HBO Max and other partners' platforms.

Perry Mason stars Matthew Rhys as Perry Mason, a low-rent private investigator who is living check-to-check and is haunted by his wartime experiences in France and suffering the effects of a broken marriage; John Lithgow as Elias Birchard "E.B." Jonathan, a struggling attorney and a semi-regular employer of Mason; Juliet Rylance as Della Street, E.B. Jonathan's creative and driven legal secretary; Tatiana Maslany as Sister Alice McKeegan, the leader of the Radiant Assembly of God, preaching to a hungry congregation and a radio audience across the country; Chris Chalk as Paul Drake, a beat cop with a knack for detective work; and Shea Whigham as Pete Strickland, who is hired by Mason as an extra set of eyes on his various investigations.

The series also stars Stephen Root, Gayle Rankin, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcón, Jefferson Mays, Lili Taylor, Andrew Howard, Eric Lange, and Robert Patrick.

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Last week, Netflix premiered Space Force, a new comedy starring Steve Carell and created by Greg Daniels, whose last major TV project was The Office, arguably the most influential TV comedy of the 21st century - and also starred Steve Carell. Needless to say, there was a lot of hype for this project. The series follows around the space division of the air force (based on the real-life space force). At 10 episodes, each running about 30 minutes long, it sometimes feels plotted more like a drama than a comedy (not uncommon for streaming comedies). And although there are plenty of things to like about the series, it ultimately feels a bit disappointing.

Space Force isn't a bad show, and it gets by quite a bit on the charm of its likable cast. But like many Netflix comedies (with the exception of a few like BoJack Horseman and Grace and Frankie, or the recent Mindy Kaling produced comedy Never Have I Ever), the show just feels a bit unfocused, going in all kinds of different directions at all times, and rarely finding a central comedic point. When you compare it to The Office (which like many people I have on a near constant loop), it really does falter. The Office was a show that had such a specific comic point of view for each character, which was part of what made it work. My biggest criticism of Space Force is the same issue I have with many streaming-era comedies: there's never a question of why? Why is this character acting this way? Why are you doing this plotline? There are a handful of really great Twitter comedies, but they lack the brevity of the very best network and cable comedies, partially because their huge creative freedom often robs them of a specific point of view.

BET+ announced that its new comedy series All the Way Black, hosted by actor/comedian Chris Spencer (@therealchrisspencer), launched exclusively on the streaming service yesterday (Thursday, June 4) across all platforms. Viewers can binge the first half of the season available now, with the second half being released at a later date. Rich in nostalgia, half-hour episodes string together clips that focus on a theme and are punctuated by hilarious color commentary of iconic moments in black pop culture from the '70s, '80s and '90s. Huddle up with "Coach's Father's Day Playbook," an all-day marathon of the sitcom Coach on Antenna TV. Catch Coach Hayden Fox, played by Craig T. Nelson, scrambling, playing man-to-man coverage, and scoring dad points with his daughter in episodes from the hit comedy series. The CW Network announced the acquisition of the international thriller from Sky Italia, Devils, starring Alessandro Borghi and Patrick Dempsey, adding the series to its Fall 2020 schedule airing on Wednesdays at 8:00pm, ET/PT, followed by the investigative drama Coroner at 9:00pm, ET/PT. Devils is an international thriller that follows Massimo Ruggero (Alessandro Borghi, The First King: Birth of an Empire, Suburra), the charismatic yet ruthless Head of Trading at NYL, one of the world’s most important investment banks, and his mentor, NYL's CEO Dominic Morgan (Patrick Dempsey, Grey's Anatomy, The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair). After Dominic appoints another colleague over Massimo following a bitter promotion battle, Massimo finds himself named prime suspect in a murder investigation. Fighting to clear his name, Massimo becomes involved in an intercontinental financial war and is forced to choose between supporting Dominic or going up against him.

Additional changes to the previously announced Fourth Quarter Fall 2020 schedule, include comedy Dead Pixels, which will now premiere this Summer, Two Sentence Horror Stories moving to Sundays 8-9pm, and Masters of Illusion, which is already slated for Fridays 8-9pm this Summer, will remain in same time period for the Fall, while World's Funniest Animals moves to 9:00pm on Friday. The rest of the schedule is intact as we previously announced. 

On the heels of its launch last week and the strong positive audience response to its first scripted original series Love Life, starring Oscar(R) nominee Anna Kendrick, HBO Max announced that the streaming platform is accelerating the release of the show's remaining episodes to give fans more of what they're watching. On Thursday, June 4, episodes 4, 5 and 6 will be available to binge on HBO Max, and on Thursday, June 11, the final four episodes of the first season will be added. Originally, the streamer had planned to release one new episode a week following its premiere with the first three episodes.

Love Life, a fresh take on a romantic comedy anthology series, features "an Emmy-worthy turn from Kendrick" (Decider, Joel Keller) and "should be the first thing you watch on the new streaming platform" (Glamour, Anna Moeslein). It has "a sharpness and a depth" (Vanity Fair, Richard Lawson), "the writing is sharp" (Uproxx, Kimberly Ricci), and star "Zoë Chao is a standout" (Entertainment Weekly, Kristen Baldwin).




All grown up. The final season of Alexa & Katie arrives June 13, only on Netflix! The multi-cam sitcom is back for the back-half 8 episodes of its third season of 16 total episodes. The series follows two lifelong best friends on their journey as they face not only the challenges of high school but also the lingering complexities of Alexa's battle with cancer. The comedy follows Paris Berelc (Alexa) and Isabel May (Katie) through their junior and senior years of high school as they learn that together, they can get through anything. Tiffani Thiessen, Eddie Shin, Jolie Jenkins, Emery Kelly, Finn Carr and Jack Griffo also star in the sitcom. The third season of Alexa & Katie will concludes featuring eight episodes to mark the end of the series as well. 

Apple unveiled a first look at Ted Lasso, a new original comedy series from Jason Sudeikis and Bill Lawrence, that will premiere globally on Apple TV+, alongside a slate of acclaimed and award-winning original series and films, on Friday, August 14. Sudeikis plays Ted Lasso, a small-time college football coach from Kansas hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer. In addition to starring, Sudeikis serves as executive producer, alongside Lawrence (Scrubs) via his Doozer Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal Content. Doozer's Jeff Ingold also serves as an executive producer with Liza Katzer as co-executive producer. The series was developed by Sudeikis, Lawrence, Joe Kelly and Brendan Hunt, and is based on the pre-existing format and characters from NBC Sports.

Ted Lasso joins highly anticipated, soon-to-premiere Apple Original series including docuseries Dear... , from Emmy and Peabody Award winner R.J. Cutler; Little Voice, a fresh, intensely romantic tale from the award-winning team of J.J. Abrams, Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson; documentary film Dads from director Bryce Dallas Howard; Greatness Code, a new docuseries that spotlights untold stories from the greatest athletes in the world; as well as award-winning and hit original series now streaming on Apple TV+ including Defending Jacob, Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet, and the Golden Globe-nominated and Critics Choice and SAG Award-winning series The Morning Show; as well as Central Park from Emmy Award winner Loren Bouchard alongside Frozen Grammy winner Josh Gad and Emmy winner Nora Smith.

Quibi has picked up a second season of Dishmantled hosted by Tituss Burgess. Take two blindfolded chef contestants. Blast a dish into their face. Then make them recreate it for celebrity judges to win a cash prize. Did we mention it's hosted by Tituss Burgess? Each episode starts with the cannon-blasting of a mystery food dish into the faces of two blindfolded chefs. They'll use their culinary prowess to identify the exploded dish and then race against the clock to recreate it. Whichever chef comes closest to the original dish wins a cash prize. Guest judges for season one included: Dan Levy, Wolfgang Puck, Jane Krakowski, Antoni Porowski, Rachel Dratch, Roy Choi and more. 

Disney+ announced that the popular scripted series, Diary of a Future President has been renewed for a second season. From CBS Television Studios and I Can and I Will Productions, the show is executive produced by Gina Rodriguez along with creator Ilana Peña (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Keith Heisler and Molly Breeskin. Peña and Heisler are co-showrunners. Diary of a Future President follows the adventures of Elena Cañero-Reed as she navigates the ups and downs of middle school on her journey to become the future president of the United States. Series regulars include Tess Romero (Blindspot) as Elena, Charlie Bushnell as Bobby, Selenis Leyva (Orange Is the New Black, Murphy Brown) as Gabi and Michael Weaver (Here and Now, The Real O'Neals) as Sam. Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) will return as adult Elena, the future president of the United States, in a recurring guest starring role. The series has received a 10-episode order and will stream exclusively on Disney+.

HBO Max - the WarnerMedia streaming platform that launched this week - has acquired the exclusive U.S. subscription-video-on-demand rights to the hit comedy Young Sheldon in a deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. HBO Max is also the streaming home of the entire library of The Big Bang Theory, the longest-running multicamera comedy in television history; all 279 episodes of Big Bang are available on the streamer now. For 12 years on The Big Bang Theory, audiences came to know the iconic, eccentric and extraordinary Sheldon Cooper. The single-camera, half-hour comedy Young Sheldon gives viewers the chance to meet him in childhood, as he embarks on his innocent, awkward and hopeful journey toward the man he will become.

The past few weeks, I've gotten the chance to catch up on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a show that I really enjoy, but sometimes forget to watch for a bit, so I wind up having a long string of episodes to catch up on. In a way, I like it that way, because Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the type of show whose upbeat, cheerful world I like to get lost in for a while, and the world of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been a constant source of joy in these trying times. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a show that has been so good for so long that it's easy to take its consistent for granted. But we should remember that a comedy being great for so long is certainly not the norm. By Season 7, most comedies have shown signs of wear and tear. Instead, Brooklyn Nine-Nine just keeps getting better.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a really solid show in its early seasons, but it didn't necessarily rise to the level of "great" in its first couple of seasons, seeming content at being an entertaining workplace comedy without much depth. But slowly but surely, the show began to quietly really focus on developing its characters, and by Season 4, the characters had grown past their original archetypes and become something more real. That has made the show even more rewarding as it enters its later seasons, as the relationship between its characters - such as Jake and Amy, which started out as a typical will they/won't they but accelerated in a way that they feel like a truly real couple. It's really rare for a show to give its characters more depth as it progresses, but that's what's happened with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and it's truly a joy to watch.

Actor Richard Herd, who appeared as George Costanza's boss Mr. Wilhelm in Seinfeld, has died. He died from cancer at his Los Angeles home on May 26. Mr. Herd was 87.

Herd starred as Captain Dennis Sheridan in the police drama T.J. Hooker. Captain Sheridan was the by-the-books superior at the fictional Lake City Police Department (LCPD) Academy Precinct. He was the father of Officer Stacy Sheridan (Heather Locklear). Herd was a regular in the first two seasons before becoming an occasional guest star in seasons three and four. The series aired on ABC for four seasons from 1982 to 1985 before moving to CBS for the final season from 1985 to 1986. It also starred William Shatner, Adrian Zmed (1982-1985), Lee Bryant (1982-1983), April Clough (1982) and James Darren (1983-1986).

He played John, the Visitors' Supreme Commander, in the 1983 NBC sci-fi miniseries V and 1984 sequel V: The Final Battle. He starred as Admiral/Secretary General William Noyce in the NBC sci-fi series seaQuest DSV from 1993 to 1994. He appeared as Mike the in the short-lived 1994 NBC drama Winnetka Road.

Herd appeared as Mr. Wilhelm, George Costanza's (Jason Alexander) baffled boss, in 11 episodes of the NBC sitcom Seinfeld from 1995 to 1998. Matt Wilhelm was George's supervisor at the New York Yankees. He later leaves the Yankees to become head scout for the New York Mets.

Some of his sitcom guest appearances included M*A*S*H in 1980, The Golden Girls in 1989, Grace Under Fire in 1996 and Caroline in the City in 1998.

He played Admiral Owen Paris, the father of helmsman Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), in three episodes of Star Trek: Voyager. Some of his many drama guest appearances included Kojak, The Rockford Files, The Streets of San Francisco, Starsky and Hutch, Dallas, Hart to Hart, Falcon Crest, Matt Houston, The A-Team, Knight Rider, Hardcastle and McCormick, Dynasty, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Beauty and the Beast, Simon & Simon, Matlock, Knots Landing, China Beach, Murder, She Wrote, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Quantum Leap, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, ER, Walker, Texas Ranger, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Pacific Blue, JAG and CSI: Miami.

Herd's first major film role was in the thriller The China Syndrome (1979) alongside Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon and Michael Douglas, where he played the character Evan McCormack, the corrupt Chairman of the California Gas & Electric Board. Some of his other film credits included Private Benjamin (1980), Lovely But Deadly (1981), Trancers (1985), Summer Rental (1985), Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987), Gleaming the Cube (1989), Get Out (2017) and The Mule (2018).

Mr. Herd was a very good character actor. He was mostly known for his dramatic roles, but he showed his comedic chops in Seinfeld as Wilhelm. He will be greatly missed.

Following the overwhelming global fandom around the recent debut of the Apple TV+ shorts Fraggle Rock: Rock On!, Apple announced a new partnership with The Jim Henson Company to reboot the beloved classic series Fraggle Rock. The new Fraggle Rock series will be reimagined as a global Apple Original series for new generations of fans to enjoy together on Apple TV+. Produced by The Jim Henson Company in association with New Regency, the series will reunite the original stars - Gobo, Red, Boober, Mokey, Wembley and Uncle Travelling Matt - for new songs and adventures, with the same spirit as the classic.

Fraggle Rock: Rock On! is now streaming for free on Apple TV+, with new mini-episodes featuring award-winning special guests Alanis Morissette, Common, Jason Mraz, Neil Patrick Harris, Tiffany Haddish and Ziggy Marley. The series aims to show everyone how we are all connected through friendship with new stories and favorite Fraggle songs from the same beloved characters of the classic '80s series. The project is produced by The Jim Henson Company in accordance with the COVID-19 "Safer at Home" guidelines, and is all shot on iPhone 11 phones from the homes of the production team and individual artists from all over the US. Fraggle Rock: Rock On! is executive produced by Halle Stanford and John Tartaglia.

The new Fraggle Rock series will join an award-winning lineup of today's most trusted franchises in kids and family programming, including the Emmy-nominated, Common Sense and Parents Choice Award-winning Helpsters and Ghostwriter from Sesame Workshop; and the Emmy-nominated, Annie and DGA Award-winning Snoopy in Space from Peanuts. FX has officially given the green light to American Horror Stories, a spin-off of Ryan Murphy's award-winning hit anthology series American Horror Story, adding to the FX original programming slate through 2021. American Horror Stories is a weekly anthology series that will feature a different horror story each episode. American Horror Story, the progenitor of the modern-day limited series format - and the longest running hour-long series in FX's history - debuts its 10th installment next year. FX has ordered the show through season 13. American Horror Story and American Horror Stories are produced by 20th Century Fox Television. With the order of American Horror Stories, as well as the recent renewals of the acclaimed comedy series Dave, Breeders and What We Do in the Shadows, the FX original programming slate is set through 2021: Archer, Atlanta, Better Things, Cake, Fargo, Hip Hop Untold, Hysterical, Impeachment: American Crime Story, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mayans M.C., Mr Inbetween, The Old Man, Pose, Pride, Snowfall, A Teacher, Untitled B.J. Novak Anthology, The Weekly, A Wilderness of Error and Y: The Last Man. While the slate is subject to change, it is likely that some additional programs in development will be ordered and could debut in the 2021 calendar year.

NBC has slated a favorite for this summer. The last five original episodes of season six of Hollywood Game Night will air on Sundays at 7:00pm ET/PT starting Sunday, June 7 through Sunday, July 12, 2020 (preempted on July 5 due to NASCAR). The series aired a special social distancing episode a few weeks ago on May 12. Jane Lynch hosted remotely while Kristen Bell, Nick Jonas and Kenan Thompson go head-to-head with Sean Hayes, John Legend and Retta as everyone battled it out from their own homes for a very worthy cause - the Red Nose Day campaign. This unprecedented night of fun and games marked the third annual Red Nose Day edition of Hollywood Game Night.
