John Masius

We also remember Emmy-winnning writer and producer John Masius. He created the 1990 NBC sitcom Ferris Bueller. He died from complications of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) at his home in Los Angeles on September 13. Mr. Masius was 75.

Masius was one of the creators and producers of the 1988-1989 NBC comedy-drama Tattingers, which was briefly revived in the spring of 1989 as the half-hour sitcom Nick & Hillary. He developed and produced the short-lived 1990 NBC sitcom Ferris Bueller. He wrote three episodes of the 1991-1992 CBS sitcom Brooklyn Bridge. He received The Humanitas Prize for his work on the series. He was a creative consultant and wrote an episode of the 1995-1997 NBC sitcom The Single Guy.

He won two writing Emmy Awards for the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere in 1984 and 1986. Some of his other writing credits included The White Shadow (3 episodes), Dolphin Cove (4 episodes), L.A. Law (4 episodes), The Visitor, and Dead Like Me.

Masius was credited with creating the 1994-2003 CBS drama Touched by an Angel, the 1999-2002 NBC medical Providence, and the 2009-2011 TNT medical drama Hawthorne.

Some of his other producing credits included The White Shadow, St. Elsewhere, Dolphin Cove, L.A. Law, The Visitor, Dead Like Me, and Hawthorne.

Mr. Masius received 14 total Emmy nominations for his work on St. Elsewhere. He earned a number of Writers Guild Awards, Humanitas Prizes, a Peabody Award and a People’s Choice Award. We thank him for his work on television. He will be greatly missed.

Bobby Hart

Singer and songwriter Bobby Hart was part of the duo Boyce and Hart. They were well known for their songwriting for the Monkees. He died in Los Angeles on September 10. Mr. Hart was 86.

In late 1965, Tommy Boyce and Hart wrote, produced and performed the soundtrack of the pilot for The Monkees, including singing lead vocals (which were later replaced, once the show was cast). The Monkees themselves re-recorded their vocals over Boyce and Hart's when it came time to release the songs, including both "(Theme from) The Monkees" and "Last Train to Clarksville", the latter being a huge hit.

I Dream of Jeannie - Boyce and Hart

Boyce and Hart performed "Girl, I'm Out To Get You" in the 1967 I Dream of Jeannie episode titled "Jeannie the Hip Hippie." They performed "I'll Blow You a Kiss in the Wind" in the 1970 Bewitched episode titled "Serena Stops the Show." In 1970, they guest starred in The Flying Nun episode titled "When Generations Gap".

They wrote hits for Jay and the Americans ("Come a Little Bit Closer"), Paul Revere & the Raiders ("(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone"), and the Leaves ("Words"). The duo also wrote the theme song of the NBC daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives.

Boyce and Hart wrote more than 300 songs, and sold more than 42 million records as a partnership. We thank them for the music. Mr. Hart will be sorely missed.

Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas…they found love. Now, they have to survive it.

In addition to Darby and Waititi, season two stars returning cast members Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, and Leslie Jones. New additions joining the ensemble cast include recurring guest stars Ruibo Qian, Madeleine Sami, Anapela Polataivao, and Erroll Shand, and guest stars Minnie Driver and Bronson Pinchot.

Our Flag Means Death is executive produced by Academy Award® winner Taika Waititi, alongside creator-showrunner David Jenkins. Meet the Mayhems

Disney Branded Television has begun production in Los Angeles on Meet the Mayhems, an original live-action comedy series about a family of raucous supervillains who recently ran afoul of the League of Villains and now must somehow beat a path to normalcy in a small Texas town. The series is scheduled to premiere in summer 2022 on Disney Channel and Disney+ platforms around the world. Meet the Mayhems was created by Chris Peterson and Bryan Moore, who are also its executive producers and showrunners. At the center of the story is teenage Havoc, who stands up against the leader of all villains, forcing her entire family to change their identities and relocate to a Texas suburb where she now goes by the name Amy. With the help of her effervescent new neighbor Hartley, she must somehow hide her superpowers and quell her villainous nature in favor of something she's fought against all her life — being normal.

Meet the Mayhems stars Isabella Pappas (Finding Alice) as Amy/Havoc, Lucy Davis (Wonder Woman) as Eva/Surge, James Patrick Stuart (General Hospital) as Vic/Kraniac, Malachi Barton (Disney Channel's Stuck in the Middle) as Colby/Flashform, Reed Horstmann (The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia) as Jake/Chaos and newcomer Kayden Muller-Janssen as Hartley. Patricia Belcher (The Week of) recurs as Celia.

Michael Nesmith

Musician, songwriter, actor, and producer Michael Nesmith, who was best known as a member of the pop rock band The Monkees and co-star of the TV series The Monkees, has died. He died from heart failure at his home in Carmel Valley, California, on December 10. Mr. Nesmith was 78.

The Monkees were formed in Los Angeles in 1965 by Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider specifically for the sitcom The Monkees. Davy Jones had a long-term contract with Screen Gems to appear in television programs. He was shortlisted for the auditions and identified in advance as a potential star for the series. Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter ran an ad to cast the remainder of the band/cast members for the TV series on September 8-10, 1965. Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork were chosen out of 437 applicants. Nesmith had been working as a musician since early 1963 and had been recording and releasing music under various names, including Michael Blessing and "Mike & John & Bill" and had studied drama in college. In October 1965, Nesmith landed the role as the wool hat-wearing guitar player "Mike" in the show.

The Monkees

The Monkees premiered on NBC on September 12, 1966. The series follows the adventures of four young men (The Monkees) trying to make a name for themselves as a rock 'n roll band. Mike ("Wool Hat") was the smart and serious one who played the guitar. Although the series ran for only two seasons (1966 to 1968) and 58 episodes, it remains hugely popular to this day. They received two Emmy Awards in 1967: Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy (James Frawley). Nesmith wrote and directed the 1997 ABC comedy special Hey, Hey, It's the Monkees. It was the last time all four of the original Monkees appeared together in a new television program.

The Monkees

The band was originally active from 1966 to 1971. They released six albums, four of which went to No. 1 on the Billboard chart. Some of their big hits included: (Theme From) The Monkees; Last Train to Clarksville; I'm a Believer; (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone; A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You; Pleasant Valley Sunday; Daydream Believer; and Valleri. In 1968, they appeared in the feature film Head. They appeared in the 1969 NBC TV special 33 1⁄3 Revolutions per Monkee. The band reunited in 1986 and toured intermittently with different lineups for a number of years.

Nesmith continued his successful songwriting and performing career, first with the seminal country rock group the First National Band, with whom he had a top-40 hit, "Joanne." His songwriting credits include "Different Drum", which became a hit for Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys.

He founded Pacific Arts, a multimedia production and distribution company, in 1974, through which he helped pioneer the music video format. He created one of the first television programs dedicated to music videos, PopClips, which aired on Nickelodeon from 1980 to 1981. In 1981, he wrote and produced Elephant Parts, an one hour long with parody commercials and comedy sketches, and features five full-length music videos. Elephant Parts won the first Grammy in the Music Video category in 1981.

Michael Nesmith in Television Parts

Nesmith created the short-lived 1985 NBC comedy-variety series Michael Nesmith in Television Parts. The show was a mix of music videos (by both himself and others) mixed in with comedy sketches, commercial parodies, and general silliness. Guest appearances included Martin Mull, Whoopi Goldberg, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Garry Shandling and Arsenio Hall.

Portlandia

He guest starred as the father of the mayor (Kyle MacLachlan) of Portland, Oregon, in a 2014 episode of Portlandia. Some of his film appearances included Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann (1982), Repo Man (1984), Burglar (1987) and Tapeheads (1988). He was the executive producer for the films Repo Man, Tapeheads, and Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann. He also did the music score for Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann.

Mr. Nesmith was a man of many talents. He was still touring last month with Micky Dolenz, who is sadly now the last surviving member of The Monkees. They deserve to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We thank him for the music and entertainment he brought us during his career. He will be greatly missed.

The Monkees Joins MeTV Network Sunday Lineup; NBC Renews All Three "Chicago" Dramas

The Monkees

Starting Sunday, March 3rd, television viewers and Monkees fans can relive the iconic music and psychedelic hijinks of the Emmy Award-winning series from its very first episode, now on MeTV, America's #1 classic television network. Following an overwhelming response to MeTV's Peter Tork tribute this past Sunday (The Monkees were up +74% Persons 2+ at 5:00pm and up +78% Persons 2+ at 5:30pm vs. last February's time period*), The Monkees quartet will join MeTV's groovy counterparts, The Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island, on the network's Sunday afternoon lineup, airing at 5pm and 5:30pm ET/PT.

The Monkees originally aired from 1966-1968, employing avant-garde film techniques such as improvisation, jump cuts and breaking the "fourth wall," and earned two Emmy Awards in 1967 for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy. Inspired by The Beatles' classic films A Hard Day's Night and Help!, the made-for-TV pop/rock band soon rose to international stardom. The beloved cast included the late Peter Tork, who passed last Thursday, as the band's "loveable goof", keyboardist, bass guitarist and eventually songwriter. To round out the foursome, Micky Dolenz was cast as the "funny" drummer, Michael Nesmith as the "deadpan" guitarist and former child actor Davy Jones was the resident "teen heartthrob" and lead vocalist.

"The Monkees is a truly memorable series, the first TV comedy of the 1960s to showcase musician characters with original popular music that charted, combined with zany comedy and the teen heartthrob phenomenon," said Neal Sabin, vice chairman of Weigel Broadcasting Co. "Our recent tribute to Peter Tork sparked a significant amount of positive viewer feedback and delivered a very large national audience. Adding The Monkees as part of our Sunday afternoon line up alongside The Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island gives our MeTV audience even more to cheer about."

In spite of being dismissed by critics for their "Hollywood" beginnings, The Monkees music struck a chord with the emerging youth culture, catapulting the group into one of the most influential bands of the decade and birthed "Monkeemania," – a flurry of merchandising, record sales, and even world tours opened by a young Jimi Hendrix. In 1967, the band sold 35 million albums, reportedly twice as many as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined, and songs Daydream Believer, I'm a Believer and Last Train to Clarksville, all reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

In the late 1980s, The Monkees experienced a resurgence in popular culture and embarked on several reunion tours. After the 2012 death of Davy Jones, the surviving members released Good Times! in 2016 and earned their first Top 20 album in 25 years. Overall, The Monkees have sold over 75 million records worldwide, making them one of the bestselling groups of all time.

Chicago Franchise

Following the huge success of its all-"Chicago" Wednesday night lineup, NBC has renewed all three of its Windy City dramas - Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. - for the 2019-20 season.

The announcement was made by Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents of Scripted Programming, NBC Entertainment.

"We remain in awe of the job Dick Wolf, our producers, casts and crews do in creating some of the most compelling television today," Katz and Pakosta said. "The 'Chicago' franchise is a lynchpin of our schedule and we're thrilled that audiences have embraced our Wednesdays with such incredible passion for these shows and characters."

So far this season, NBC's Wednesday lineup of "Chicago" dramas is undefeated on the night in total viewers, winning 15 of 15 Wednesday nights when in originals. That's elevated NBC to the Wednesday lead at this point in the season for the first in 16 years, despite competition this season from such potent rivals as Empire, Survivor, The Masked Singer and Modern Family. All three "Chicago" dramas are delivering their most-watched seasons ever, with Chicago Med averaging a 2.0 rating in adults 18-49 and 11.4 million viewers overall in "live plus seven day" averages from Nielsen Media Research, Chicago Fire at a 2.1 in 18-49 and 11.7 million viewers and Chicago P.D. earning a 2.1 in 18-49 and 11.1 million viewers.

Chicago Med, currently in its fourth season, is executive produced by Dick Wolf, Diane Frolov, Andrew Schneider, Michael Waxman, Matt Olmstead, Michael Brandt, Derek Haas, Arthur W. Forney and Peter Jankowski.

Chicago Fire, currently in its seventh season, is executive produced by Dick Wolf, Derek Haas, Todd Arnow, Andrea Newman, Michael Gilvary, Michael Brandt, Arthur W. Forney and Peter Jankowski.

Chicago P.D., currently in its sixth season, is executive produced by Dick Wolf, Rick Eid, Peter Jankowski, Derek Haas, Arthur W. Forney and Eriq La Salle are executive producers.

Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. are produced by Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment.

Fri-Yay: The Other Two Is Our First Great New Comedy Series of 2019; Remembering Peter Tork of The Monkees, MeTV to Air Tribute on Sunday (Feb. 24)

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

The Other Two

by Vincent

A few weeks ago, I talked briefly about The Other Two, a series that premiered on Comedy Central in January. The show is now five episodes into its debut season, so I wanted to look back at it and talk about all of the great stuff it's doing. Frankly, The Other Two is my pick for best new comedy series not just of 2019, but perhaps in several years. It gives me very similar feelings that shows like Broad City, BoJack Horseman and You're the Worst did when they premiered back in 2014 - this is a show that is fresh, new, and offers a great perspective, and could pave the way for the next era of great comedy.

The Other Two is a comedy centered around the two siblings of Chase Dreams, a viral teen sensation whose success stands in stark contrast to his older siblings. The show is funny, lively and has great performances from its entire cast, but it's also an interestingly structured series that's a little bit different than cable comedies of recent years. In some ways, The Other Two is more in line with a traditional sitcom than other recent Comedy Central series such as Corporate and the dearly departed Detroiters. It's not quite as visually inventive as Corporate, or as off-the-wall as Detroiters, going for a bit more of a broad audience. But that's part of what makes the show as special as it is.

The Other Two is going for strong relatability and familial situations that we can all look at and connect our own lives to. In some ways, The Other Two is a family sitcom through and through, and it certainly uses those beats often - and yet, its humor is very much in line with shows like Broad City or BoJack Horseman - self-deprecating, snarky, and creative. We've never really seen a series try to merge the world of a family sitcom with heartwarming values with the sardonic, edgy nature of a cable sitcom, and it's fascinating to see The Other Two straddling those two worlds so well. It's a series I'll definitely be keeping my eye on, and since the show has been a moderate ratings success that has already earned a second season, I'm interested to see if its influence will expand and set a tone for the next crop of cable comedies.

Peter Tork

Musician and actor Peter Tork, best known as the keyboardist and bass guitarist of The Monkees, has died. He died on February 21 at his home in Mansfield, Connecticut, from complications of adenoid cystic carcinoma. Mr. Tork was 77.

Tork was the last chosen and oldest member of the group.

The Monkees

The Monkees premiered on NBC on September 12, 1966. The series follows the adventures of four young men (The Monkees) trying to make a name for themselves as a rock 'n roll band. Tork played the lovable dummy, a persona he had developed as a folk singer in New York's Greenwich Village. Although the series ran for only 2 seasons (1966 to 1968) and 58 episodes, it remains hugely popular to this day. They received two Emmy Awards in 1967: Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy (James Frawley). Tork directed the episode Monkees Mind Their Manor in 1968.

Tork, Dolenz and Jones appeared in The Brady Bunch Movie in 1995.

Peter Tork in Boy Meets World

Tork made guest appearances in several television series. He appeared as himself in a 1995 episode of Wings where he bids against Helen (Crystal Bernard) for the Monkeemobile. He played Topanga Lawrence's (Danielle Fishel) father, Jedidiah Lawrence, in two episodes of Boy Meets World in 1995. His other sitcom guest appearances included California Dreams and The King of Queens. He guest starred as Chris in two episodes of 7th Heaven in 1998 and 2001.

Mr. Tork was a man of many talents. It's sad that we've lost two of the four Monkees. We thank him for the great music and entertainment he brought us during his long career. He will be greatly missed.

MeTV Remembering Peter Tork

MeTV Network pays tribute to the career of actor and musician Peter Tork with a special presentation of The Monkees airing on MeTV this Sunday, February 24, beginning at 5:00pm ET/PT through 6:00pm ET/PT.

Peter Tork will forever be remembered as the keyboardist and bass guitarist for The Monkees, the 60s pop/rock band that was formed specifically for the eponymous television show that originally aired from 1966 to 1968. Beloved for the TV show's comedy and music, The Monkees musical hits include I'm a Believer (featured in this MeTV tribute), Daydream Believer, Last Train to Clarksville and Pleasant Valley Sunday.

Tork got his start in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk music scene before landing the coveted role in the TV series that would bring him national stardom alongside fellow band members, Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Davy Jones. Throughout the series, Tork would write some of their hit songs, including For Pete's Sake, used as the show's closing credits during the second season.

Tork's musical influence continued on even after the show, collaborating with George Harrison on his 1968 soundtrack album Wonderwall. In the late 1980s, The Monkees experienced a resurgence in popular culture and embarked on several reunion tours. After the 2012 death of Davy Jones, the surviving members released Good Times! in 2016 and earned their first Top 20 album in 25 years.

The schedule for MeTV's Tribute to Peter Tork includes:

Sunday, February 24, 2019 (All Times are Eastern/Pacific)

5:00- 5:30pm ET/PT - One Man Shy

A wealthy debutante hires the Monkees to play at her coming out party, where Peter falls instantly in love with her. The girl's rich suitor begins a campaign to show her what a bad boy Peter is and the Monkees reply with their own plot, to show what a fine person Peter is. Monkee music includes Valleri and I'm a Believer.

5:30- 6:00pm ET/PT - The Devil and Peter York

Based loosely on Stephen Vincent Benet's fantasy novel (and the Oscar-winning 1941 RKO movie it spawned) The Devil and Daniel Webster. At Mr. Zero's Pawn Shop, Peter falls in love with a golden harp. Learning Peter has no money, Zero produces a contract, which Peter signs. At the pad, Micky, Mike and Davy remind him that he can't play the harp and urge him to return it. Suddenly, Zero appears in a puff of smoke, and, at his command, Peter plays beautifully. Zero disappears and the boys are immediately booked into a harp act, which is an instant overnight success.

Claim to Fame: We're continuing with our theme of stars of the new fall sitcoms this week with Erinn Hayes, who plays Donna on Kevin Can Wait (debuting Monday night on CBS). Hayes got her start with some minor roles, as well as a somewhat odd role of playing Pam Dawber in Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Mork and Mindy back in 2005 (when these "behind the scenes" of classic TV series specials were big), and found her first recurring role in the sitcom Kitchen Confidential, which only lasted half a season. Her first big taste of success has come from the series Childrens Hospital on Adult Swim. She had a brief time as a star of a broadcast network sitcom in 2012 with the NBC sitcom Guys with Kids, but now, she is hoping for success with a role in a sitcom that stars a proven sitcom star, Kevin James, in Kevin Can Wait.

Silver Spoons Joins FamilyNet; Pretty Little Liars Concluding on Freeform in 2017

Silver Spoons

Silver Spoons is now on FamilyNet! The hit '80s sitcom is airing every night in primetime at 9pm & 9:30pm ET and Mon-Sat 12pm & 12:30pm ET. The sitcom joins a Sony Pictures Television shows filled schedule with sitcoms like Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, All in the Family, Benson, Barney Miller, The Facts of Life and Archie Bunker's Place. Weekends have all those plus The Monkees. This is the second addition of Silver Spoons recently, as Logo started airing the series, too, but Logo has removed the series from its schedule. But not to worry, at least the sitcom is now on FamilyNet, if you receive it. There might be another network adding it soon over the next year or two, too. Stay tuned! In this classic '80s series, Ricky Stratton (Ricky Schroder) arrives at the mansion of the father he has never met to introduce himself, moves in, and gets to know him better.

Pretty Little Liars

Freeform has announced the series finale for Pretty Little Liars. The series finale will be a two-hour television event. The final 10 episodes of season seven, airing in April 2017, will be followed by the series premiere of I. Marlene King's new series Famous In Love. As for Pretty Little Liars, it will premiere its final 10 episodes for its last season in April 2017 after seven seasons of the hit original drama series. Antenna TV Fall 2011 Schedule; OWN and TLC Acquires Undercover Boss Repeats for Fall 2012

Welcome to the 2011 edition of our annual look at the fall schedules for cable and digital TV! We are launching this schedule barrage with the digital network Antenna TV! We have Antenna TV's Fall 2011 schedule and they will be expanding the comedy line-up to feature more sitcoms every weekday! The line-up of comedies will return to start at 1pm ET, like the original launch schedule had. However, this time the comedies will last longer into the night, too! The comedies will run until 5am Sun-Thurs nights, instead of 3am. Antenna TV will also be launching a new logo come this fall. You can take peek at what it looks like below. It is subject to change.

On to the schedule, the new fall 2011 schedule will begin on Monday, Sept. 19, 2011. From Mon-Fri, Antenna TV Theater will air from 5am-1pm with movies from all eras. Then every weekday from 1pm-6pm will feature classic sitcoms with an hour each of Burns & Allen, Father Knows Best, Dennis the Menace, Hazel in new time periods and the return of The Partridge Family to weekdays. Hazel is also returning to the daytime line-up, as currently it is airing every night at 2:00am. Mon-Thurs in the 6pm hour will continue to feature the Antenna TV staple Three's Company with the spin-offs of the series mixed in the rotation. In fact, The Ropers will join the second half-hour (6:30pm and 12:30am) for about seven weeks starting Monday, Aug. 29! This will be the second time The Ropers will be featured on Antenna TV, so catch all 28 episodes before it goes back to Three's Company for the full hour! On Fridays, the 6pm hour will continue to feature the DLT Entertainment sitcom Too Close for Comfort. Weekdays in the 7pm hour will also still have Good Times, but the sitcom will not be seven days a week anymore, though it will remain Sundays at 7pm. Moving on to primetime, Sanford & Son returns to its original 8pm hour replacing Maude, which will be moving to weekends only (Saturdays 7-8pm and Sundays 6-7pm, more on that below). The block of All in the Family, Married...with Children, Mad About You and Three's Company remains in primetime from 9pm-1am. From 1am-3am we have a schedule change though. Mon-Thurs nights will feature one episode each of weekend staples The Partridge Family, The Monkees, The Flying Nun and Gidget as they move from weekend afternoons to weekday late nights! These will replace the late night hours of Sanford & Son and Hazel. Antenna TV will replace another movie with a black & white overnight block from 3am-5am with an episode each of their signature black & white series: Hazel, Dennis the Menace, Father Knows Best, and Burns & Allen.
Fridays will be the same as Mon-Thurs essentially, except as I mentioned above the 6pm hour is Too Close for Comfort still and the continued Three Stooges Friday night prime block from 8pm-11pm, followed by Benny Hill from 11pm-2am in late night. One other change is the 2am hour will now feature Totally Tooned In, replacing Hazel. Antenna TV Theater remains from 3am-5am, so we don't get a black & white block on Friday nights (or Saturday nights either).
Moving on to Saturdays, Antenna TV Theater will still kick it off at 5am and another movie has been added at 7am, replacing Totally Tooned In (as these two hours are moving to Fri-Sat 2am). The classic animated shorts will remain in the Saturday 9am hour, though. From 10am-1pm will be the E/I block which will see some new additions starting Saturday, Sept. 3. Antenna TV Theater will now run on Saturday afternoons from 1pm-5pm, since Gidget, Flying Nun, The Monkees and The Partridge Family are moving to weeknights. Antenna TV Theater will air on Sundays from 1pm-5pm, too, replacing those four comedies. The 5pm hour on both Saturdays and Sundays will still be Too Close for Comfort and in the 6pm hour, All in the Family will now air in the hour leading into spin-off Maude in the 7pm hour. This is unique scheduling and it will be unique on Sundays well as the 6pm hour will feature Maude leading into spin-off Good Times in the 7pm hour. Love that!
Weekends in primetime will still have Benny Hill on Saturdays from 8pm-11pm followed by late night The Three Stooges from 11pm-2am. The 2am hour on Saturday nights will now be Totally Tooned In, like on Friday nights (as we mentioned) leading into a movie at 3am. And Sundays in primetime will have Sanford & Son join the 8pm hour, like on Mon-Thurs, followed by All in the Family and Soap remaining in the 9pm and 10pm hours. However, Soap will lose its 11pm hour on Sunday nights as NewsRadio joins the Antenna TV line-up airing every Sunday night! Hopefully they are saving the plays on Soap so maybe in the winter it could move to weekdays? Anyway, Too Close for Comfort will remain Sunday nights at 12am, as well Burns & Allen in the 1am hour on Sunday nights but also it gains the 2am hour creating a two-hour block of Burns & Allen. Then the black and white overnight block that will air Mon-Thurs will also air Sunday nights, so it will be airing five nights a week!

View the FULL Antenna TV Fall 2011 schedule, so you get the full details. So to recap, Antenna TV is not dropping any shows this fall, while we get more sitcoms on weekdays (1pm-5am), and the addition of NewsRadio to Sunday nights! If there are any changes to this, we will let you know. Stay with us the rest of the summer every weekday for updates on other fall schedules for cable. Coming up will be WGN America, TBS, FX and much MUCH more!
And if that is not all, the TCA Summer 2011 Press Tour starts tomorrow with cable up first and will run through Aug. 8, so even more of a reason to stay with us everyday! Dog days of summer are over here on the blog now! It's time to think about the Fall, as the summer speeds by!

Moving on, we have one story that we saved for a week or two to bring you today. OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network and TLC have acquired the off-network rights of Undercover Boss from CBS Television Distribution. TLC and OWN will each have access to the library and will determine their independent scheduling strategies with regularly scheduled episodes of the hit series set to begin airing Fall 2012. However, TLC will being airing the series once a week starting Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 airing Mondays at 8PM with and encore at 11PM. It is unclear if OWN will air the series once a week until it is available for regular airings in Fall 2012.
Undercover Boss is a one-hour reality series that follows high-level corporate executives as they slip anonymously into the rank and file of their own companies. Each week, a different executive will leave the comfort of their corner office for an undercover mission to examine the inner workings of their corporation. While working alongside their employees, they will learn about themselves, the effects their decisions have on others, where the problems lie within their organization, the perception of their company, and discover the unsung heroes of their work force.
We will have more on this when we get near Fall 2012, but for now TLC will be airing it Mondays at 8pm & 11pm starting next week. Stay tuned for more!

Our Exclusive Interview with Antenna TV's Sean Compton; KTLA Preview of Antenna TV; 2011 SAG Nominations

We have a very exciting interview for you today. We have an interview with Antenna TV's Sean Compton (President of Programming at Tribune) about their upcoming launch. We get answers to various questions that you will all want to know about, including updates on affiliates, cable providers and of course the shows itself! As always with all of our interviews, it is in Seven Questions form. So let's first tell you a little bit each about Sean Compton and Antenna TV (as if you didn't already know).

We had the pleasure to once again interview Sean Compton, President of Programming for Tribune Broadcasting. Compton previously worked for Clear Channel radio for 16 years and was their VP Programming for 10 years before leaving in April 2008 to run Tribune programming as SVP, which includes the massive change for WGN America and now the creation of Antenna TV. Compton was promoted to President of Programming in May 2010. Compton also oversees programming for Tribune's local television stations and for WGN America. Compton is 36 years old and has worked in radio since he was in high school, and he also says his childhood hero was actually legendary NBC programmer Brandon Tartikoff. Compton is originally from Connersville, Indiana, which is between Indianapolis and Cincinnati, and he grew up watching those TV markets. See our previous interview with Sean back in 2008 regarding WGN America, when he brought back classic TV.

Antenna TV is a new digital network from Tribune Broadcasting that will debut on New Year's Day on multicast stations nationwide. 50 million homes will be reached in the first wave of clearances. Antenna TV starts broadcasting at midnight EST, on January 1, 2011 with more than 24 hours of The Three Stooges. The program lineup on Sunday, January 2, 2011 is built around a Benny Hill marathon. The network's regular programming schedule, featuring a combination of movies and classic television shows, include TV sitcoms All in the Family, Sanford and Son, The Nanny, Married...with Children, Maude, Good Times, Three's Company, The Partridge Family, Dennis the Menace, Too Close for Comfort, Father Knows Best and Burns & Allen begins on Monday, January 3, 2011. Legendary announcer Gary Owens is the voice of the channel.

Sean Compton, President of Programming for Tribune

"Seven Questions with Antenna TV's Sean Compton"

SitcomsOnline: First off, I have to say I am personally very excited for Antenna TV's Jan. 1 launch. Most of the series that Antenna TV will be airing are some of my favorites, including Three's Company. I have to ask, how did this idea come about and how was it made into a reality?
Antenna TV's Sean Compton: We looked around the television landscape and through the cable and broadcast universe all groups are trying to appeal to younger demos. This includes our own group with WGN America and its younger appeal with recent additions. TV Land used to own the space but has jumped deep into original programming and with the recent successes they will go deeper in original programming. We see it as a huge opportunity, This TV, the MGM movie channel, is free to over the air viewers 24 hours a day. The only over the air, all movie channel. Antenna TV will be a great over the air destination for some movies but primarily classic sitcoms. Three's Company is a big win for us, as it hasn't had much exposure on cable in many years yet still has a huge fan base. The Three Stooges appeals to every demo. Benny Hill is a riot and Married... with Children is a great late night show.

SitcomsOnline: This world of digital television is really fascinating. It has really opened up the doors for older series to air again. Still, many people out there don't have televisions without cable or satellite. Antenna TV is a free digital station, but many of the viewers will still rely on cable to watch it. We know Comcast Cable has picked it up in Chicago on channel 353, but what about the rest of the markets? Is Comcast the main cable provider for Antenna TV or will more providers also carry it?
Antenna TV's Sean Compton: Most of the markets will have a cable home for Antenna TV. If you live in a large city you should go out and buy an HD antenna anyway. I've got DirecTV and Comcast in my home and I also have rabbit ears so I can watch the dot 2 and dot 3 choices out there as well. It's starting to get interesting as broadcasters are getting their dot 2's and 3's cranked up and its going to get competitive.

SitcomsOnline: As of launch on Jan. 1, Antenna TV will be in 50 million homes (thanks to mainly the Tribune stations) including the top 5 markets, which is great. Are you close to sealing deals with stations in other top markets like San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, Detroit and other markets like Louisville? We also hear that some markets already cleared will be getting sneak peek launches, like in Los Angeles. What will that be like?
Antenna TV's Sean Compton: The sneak peak is just some classic shows that will air on KTLA in Los Angeles to promote Antenna TV. There are a lot of OTA's (over the air) homes in Los Angeles and we want to tap into the KTLA audience and let them know it is coming. Regarding the other markets, we have signed a group deal with Local TV LLC. They own WJW in Cleveland, KDVR in Denver, WNEP in Wilkes Barre and many other markets. They are excited and sign on in early first quarter. There are other groups talking to us now and we have a number of offers for markets that we are working through now. There are a lot of affiliate interest for us out there, partially because we are committed to great programming. Zero paid programming, 24/7 movies and sitcoms. (View an Antenna TV promo!)

SitcomsOnline: The classic TV shows acquired by Antenna TV are either from Sony Pictures Television or DLT Entertainment. Does Antenna TV have an overall library deal with these studios or were these series specifically bought? If it is a library deal, can we expect schedule changes frequently with new additions? (Hoping for some Diff'rent Strokes, What's Happening Now!!, The Facts of Life, and other Sony greats.)
Antenna TV's Sean Compton: We did do an overall library deal. Jeff Wolf at Sony worked hard for several weeks putting this together with us. John Fitzgerald did the same for us at D.L. Taffner. You will see other shows weave in and out of the line-up over the next several years. Possibly we'll tap into other distributors for product as well.

SitcomsOnline: You previously mentioned to us that stunts and marathons will be done during the holidays. 2011 kicks-off with a marathon weekend of The Three Stooges and Benny Hill, but what else can we expect for other holidays later this year? I personally am hoping for a short-lived sitcom stunt one of these days, as Sony Pictures Television has plenty of short-lived, but good, series from the '70s and '80s. Among them are The Jeffersons spin-off Checking In, the Sanford & Son spin-offs Grady and Sanford Arms, the Who's the Boss? spin-off Living Dolls, and other short-lived fare such as One in a Million starring Shirley Hemphill, The Dumplings from Nicholl-Ross-West, Norman Lear's Hot L Baltimore, also Filthy Rich starring pre-Designing Women stars Dixier Carter & Delta Burke, and 704 Hauser, where a new family moves into the Bunker house from All in the Family.
Antenna TV's Sean Compton: We haven't thought it all through yet. Our big priority has been getting launched and affiliates set. As you know, I am a big fan of event programming. WGN America's Munster Mash on Halloween had monster, pun intended, ratings this past year. It is the third Halloween that we've aired it. We've done a 70's week, an 80's week, Valentine's Specials, etc. I imagine you'll see much of the same on Antenna TV especially around the holidays.

SitcomsOnline: Before we go further, I have to mention that Antenna TV will be airing two short-lived spin-offs on its schedule. The Three's Company spin-offs -- The Ropers and Three's a Crowd -- will be aired within Three's Company's hour timeslot (5pm-6pm and encores 12am-1am). That is very cool and to my knowledge, it never has been done. Back to questions, Antenna TV will also air movies, mainly during mornings and early afternoons. Will these films also be from specific studios and what are some of the films we can expect?
Antenna TV's Sean Compton: The films will come from the Columbia/Sony libraries. It's a very deep film library and prevents overlap from anything on This TV, which is fueled by the MGM library. I love Three's a Crowd and The Ropers (Three's Company spin-offs) being a part of the line-up. (Once the Ropers leave the Three's Company episodes, you'll see The Ropers scheduled in one of the half-hours, and later on Three's a Crowd in one of the half-hours after the final Three's Company episode airs.) They were solid spin-offs that at the time were short-lived and have had little exposure. Another show that I'm thrilled to have is Too Close for Comfort.

SitcomsOnline: Finally, it is really great Tribune is creating a network like this for the digital era. You have done a great job in preserving classic TV sitcoms first on Tribune's WGN America (where we previously interviewed you) and now with Tribune's Antenna TV. Will Antenna TV depend on Nielsen ratings like broadcast networks and cable networks? Or is the landscape different in digital substation world? Fans have also asked if these programs will be unedited or at least close to being unedited if there are less ads on digital substations?
Antenna TV's Sean Compton: Thank you for the kind words. We air the shows the way that the distributors supply us. We will do no editing on our end. We also will not be squeezing the end credits nor will we have an Antenna TV bug/logo on the screen during programming. Stations locally may decide to put theirs up, but nationally we will not display one. As far as ratings go, yes we will look at ratings but in the digital world it's driven a bit differently. The product we bought was done specifically to find opportunities. The Cosby Show, Cheers, Roseanne are on television in syndication and cable everyday, so we went after shows that haven't had the mass exposure in recent years. We won't live and die with this network by ratings in the first 2-3 years.

Our thanks to Sean Compton and Antenna TV. We wish them the best of luck on their launch on January 1! Before we get to the rest of today's blog, we want to give you information on KTLA's preview of Antenna TV in Los Angeles that Sean talked about in our interview. In anticipation of this new programming, KTLA will broadcast a sneak peek of Antenna TV on its main channel, KTLA 5. Antenna TV is coming to KTLA's digital channel 5.2 in Los Angeles on January, 1 2011.
The first sneak peek will be this Saturday (Dec. 18) and will air from 2pm-5pm PT with an hour each of sitcoms Dennis the Menace, Father Knows Best and The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show. A few hours later in primetime on Saturday from 8-10pm PT, KTLA will air four episodes of Sanford & Son. Then on Sunday (Dec. 19), KTLA will give two episodes each of Gidget, Circus Boy, and The Monkees all starting at 9am PT. In late on Sunday, KTLA will air two hours of The Three Stooges from 11pm-1am with six classic episodes. And finally on Sunday, Dec. 26 KTLA will give LA fans a preview of Antenna TV's Sunday morning western block with The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin at 1pm, The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok at 2pm, and The Iron Horse at 3pm.
