SitcomsOnline Digest: Warner Bros. Television Suspends Deals with Top Creators; Fran Drescher Re-Elected President of SAG-AFTRA

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! Once again, it seems like we're hitting TV (at least as we know it) doomsday, as we enter a mostly non-existent fall TV season, with strikes that will never end and a blackout dispute between Spectrum and cable channels owned by Disney that has both sides saying it may not even be worth settling. Nonetheless, we're here with some highlights for you. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • With a writers strike that appears to have no end still ongoing, Warner Bros. Television has suspended some deals that they have with top creators, though it is anticipated that the suspended time will be added to the end of the contracts. (Deadline)
  • Fran Drescher has been re-elected as SAG-AFTRA president, in the middle of the on-going strike. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Like many shows, Saved by the Bell did some things that seemed acceptable in the 90s that wouldn't be so acceptable today, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar is talking all about it in a podcast. (CNN)
  • When Bob Barker recently died, many noticed he had not made any public appearances in a while, and that may be because he suffered from Alzheimer's disease for years leading up to his death. (Deadline)
  • Networks need something scripted to air in the current drought, so Fox is going with encores and CBS is looking down under to Australia. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (SEPTEMBER 9 - SEPTEMBER 15)

  • Catchy Comedy has a binge of My Three Sons this weekend.
  • A new season of The Morning Show arrives on Wednesday on Apple TV+.

September Is Anniversary Month on Hulu; Freeform's 31 Nights of Halloween Returns for Its 25th Anniversary

Frasier

This September, Hulu's cup runneth over with classic, milestone anniversaries from some of TV's fan favorite series including full seasons of The X-Files, Felicity, Frasier, Will & Grace, One Tree Hill and more.

FX's Sons of Anarchy - 15th Anniversary (September 3, 2008)
Sons of Anarchy is an adrenalized drama with darkly comedic undertones about a notorious outlaw motorcycle club intent on protecting their sheltered small town against encroaching drug dealers, corporate developers and overzealous law officers. The club is equally determined to protect their ruthless and illegally thriving arms business. Charlie Hunnam stars as Jackson 'Jax' Teller, a man whose love for the brotherhood is tested by his growing apprehension for its lawlessness. Katey Sagal stars as Gemma Teller Morrow, Jax's force-of-nature mother, who along with Ron Perlman as Clarance 'Clay' Morrow, Jax's stepfather and MC president, have their own darker vision for the club. An FX Networks Original Series.

The X-Files - 30th Anniversary (September 10, 1993)
The truth is out there. FBI agents Scully and Mulder seek it in this sci-fi phenomenon about their quest to explain the seemingly unexplainable. Their strange cases include UFO sightings, alien encounters and abductions, and just about everything else among the paranormal.

Frasier - 30th Anniversary (September 16, 1993)
Comedy series set in Seattle, WA, which chronicles the lives of an eloquently pompous radio show host Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer), his brazen radio producer Roz (Peri Gilpin), his competitive, high-brow brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), their crotchety father Martin (John Mahoney) and his quirky live-in nurse Daphne (Jane Leeves).

Will & Grace - 25th Anniversary (September 21, 1998)
Will and Grace are best friends and roommates. With pals Karen and Jack, it's all fair game for this outspoken foursome, from sex and dating to cutting cultural commentary.

NYPD Blue - 30th Anniversary (September 21, 1993)
Committed to reflecting reality, this series portrays the mature themes of life in the police department of New York City with an unprecedented combination of real life, real language and real dramas. Whether it's in the squad room or the bedroom, NYPD Blue will offer viewers the kind of realism more often associated with theatrical films than with network television.

One Tree Hill - 20th Anniversary (September 23, 2003)
In a small North Carolina town, two estranged half brothers carry on very different lives. Basketball prodigy Nathan Scott has inherited the throne of high school popularity once held by his father, Dan, while Lucas Scott, also a talented player, stays an outsider. Spending nights shooting hoops on a riverfront court, Lucas remains the son Dan never acknowledged. Now, Lucas' and Nathan's paths intersect for the first time.

Felicity - 25th Anniversary (September 23, 2003)
A young fresh out of high school girl, follows her high school crush to college in New York City to be near him.

Also celebrating this year...

The O.C. - 20th Anniversary (August 5, 2003)
In The O.C., the lives of a group of friends and families are forever changed when an outsider arrives to their affluent community of Newport Beach in Orange County, California. From Josh Schwartz, the executive producer of Gossip Girl and Chuck, the series became a pop-culture phenomenon with its mix of heart, humor, drama and romance.

Living Single - 30th Anniversary (August 22, 1993)
Khadijah James (Queen Latifah) has it all - a great job running her own trendy magazine and part ownership of a fancy brownstone. Sharing the ownership of their home is her endearingly naĆÆve cousin Synclaire (Kim Coles) who's also Khadijah's assistant at the magazine. Their third roommate is a sarcastic, selfish fortune hunter Regine (Kim Fields). And even though she doesn't live in the brownstone, Khadijah's best friend, Maxine (Erika Alexander) - a tough, aggressive divorce attorney always searching for Mr. Right - spends more time here than she does in her own home. With love, laughter and a little bit of luck, four women in New York City on the threshold of the rest of their lives hilariously celebrate Living Single.

That's So Raven - 20th Anniversary (January 17, 2003)
Raven Baxter is a typical teenager who just happens to be psychic. The only problem is that Raven's sneak peeks into the future can make her (and her best friends Eddie and Chelsea) jump to the wrong conclusions. Somehow, they manage to create more comedic problems than they solve!

Still living in London and working at the local cinema, Jessie (Rose Matafeo) explores a new single life after parting ways with film star Tom (Nikesh Patel). Our Flag Means Death

The eight-episode second season of the Max Original comedy series Our Flag Means Death, from creator-showrunner David Jenkins, Emmy®-nominated executive producer and star Taika Waititi, and Emmy®-nominated executive producer Garrett Basch, debuts with three episodes Thursday, October 5 on Max. The season continues with two new episodes weekly leading up to the season finale on Thursday, October 26.

Our Flag Means Death is based (very) loosely on the true adventures of 18th century would-be pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). After trading the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede became captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas…they found love. Now, they have to survive it.

In addition to Darby and Waititi, season two stars returning cast members Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, and Leslie Jones. New additions joining the ensemble cast include recurring guest stars Ruibo Qian, Madeleine Sami, Anapela Polataivao, and Erroll Shand, and guest stars Minnie Driver and Bronson Pinchot.

Our Flag Means Death is executive produced by Academy Award® winner Taika Waititi, alongside creator-showrunner David Jenkins. In addition to his duties as showrunner, Jenkins directed the first two episodes of season two. Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, and Antoine Douaihy also serve as executive producers. Season two was filmed in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Partridge Family Coming to AXS TV Starting Oct. 2; CBS to Air A Tribute to Bob Barker Special Aug. 31, Marathon of Match Game Episodes to Air Sept. 2 on Game Show Network

The Partridge Family

AXS TV bolsters its classic programming lineup with the quintessential '70s sitcom The Partridge Family — airing back-to-back episodes in primetime every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT starting October 2. Additionally, the series will air daily on AXS TV as part of the Network's new "Retro Binge" daytime block starting October 2 at 1 p.m. ET, alongside fellow music sitcom The Monkees, star-studded pop culture series The Very Very Best of the 80s, and informative retrospective A Year in Music.

AXS TV puts the spotlight on all 96 episodes of the hit musical comedy, capturing the beloved band as they tour across the country in their iconic multi-colored school bus, performing their signature tunes and getting caught up in sidesplitting shenanigans. The Partridge Family stars Oscar®-winning actress Shirley Jones as matriarch Shirley Partridge, with Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce, Suzanne Crough, Jeremy Gelbwaks, and teen sensation David Cassidy as the talented offspring who convince the young widow to leave her bank-telling job and join their fledgling family band.

The series was inspired by real life musical siblings The Cowsills, and spawned a number of chart-topping singles including opening theme "C'mon Get Happy," "Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted," and the signature hit "I Think I Love You," among many others. The Partridge Family boasted a number of all-star guests during its four-season tenure, with unforgettable appearances by Johnny Cash, Richard Pryor, Jodie Foster, Dick Clark, John Astin, Howard Cosell, and MLB Hall of Famer Johnny Bench; in addition to early roles by then-up-and-comers such as Mark Hamill, Louis Gossett Jr., Meredith Baxter, Rob Reiner, and Jackie Earle Haley, as well as future Charlie's Angels Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Cheryl Ladd.

The Price Is Right: A Tribute to Bob Barker

The Price Is Right: A Tribute to Bob Barker, a new one-hour special honoring the life and career of the beloved late television legend and animal rights activist, who was a longstanding member of the CBS family, will be broadcast Thursday, Aug. 31 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+. Drew Carey, who succeeded Bob Barker as The Price Is Right host – and is a longtime fan and friend of Barker's – celebrates Barker's life and legacy as host of the tribute.

CBS will air an encore broadcast of the special in the regular weekday timeslot for The Price Is Right (11:00 AM-12:00 PM, ET/10:00-11:00 AM, PT) on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4.

For 35 years, Barker, who died at age 99 last Saturday (Aug. 26), hosted The Price Is Right, television's longest-running daytime game show. He was its host from 1972 to 2007 and was well-known for signing off each day with the quote, “Help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered.” He earned 14 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1999 Daytime Emmy Awards.

Featuring an array of “priceless” on-camera moments from throughout Barker's 50-plus year career, the special showcases his talents as a charming, charismatic and razor-sharp “master of ceremonies” who created special connections with countless contestants on The Price Is Right – and his evolution into a pop culture icon appearing as himself in prominent projects on both the silver and small screens.

Game Show Network will honor the late Bob Barker with an eight-hour marathon of Match Game episodes featuring him this Saturday, September 2, starting at 9 am.

Remembering TV Legend Bob Barker; Wolf Like Me Returns in October on Peacock

Bob Barker

Emmy Award-winning television game show host Bob Barker, who hosted The Price Is Right from 1972 to 2007, has died. He died on August 26 at his home in Los Angeles from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Barker was 99.

Truth or Consequences

Barker began his game show career in 1956, hosting Truth or Consequences. He started hosting on December 31, 1956 and continued with the program until 1975. He traditionally ended each episode with the phrase, "Hoping all your consequences are happy ones."

He began hosting the CBS revival of The Price Is Right on September 4, 1972. He hosted the show for 35 years until his final episode aired on June 15, 2007. After retiring from the show, he returned for three guest appearances in 2009 to promote his autobiography Priceless Memories, in 2013 to celebrate his 90th birthday, and in 2015 for an April Fools' Day switch where he took Drew Carey's place at the show's intro. He was a 14-time winner of the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host. As an executive producer, he was a 4-time winner of the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1999 Daytime Emmy Awards. He was a longtime animal rights activist. In 1982, he began ending episodes with the phrase: "This is Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population – have your pets spayed or neutered."

Bob Barker and Fran Drescher in The Nanny

Barker made his acting debut as Mort in a 1960 episode of Bonanza. He played himself in a 1994 episode of The Nanny. He made two guest appearances as Ben Davis, Carly's (Mel Harris) widower father, in Something So Right in 1996 and 1997. In 2001, he played himself in an episode of Yes, Dear. He played himself in a 1998 episode of Martial Law. His voice credits included Futurama, Family Guy (3 episodes), and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Neil Patrick Harris and Bob Barker in How I Met Your Mother

He appeared in a 2007 episode of How I Met Your Mother. In "Showdown," Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) is chosen as a contestant on The Price Is Right giving him the opportunity to fulfill one of his life wishes: to meet Bob Barker, who he delusionally believes to be his father.

Bob Barker and Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore

Barker played himself in the sports comedy film Happy Gilmore (1996). In one scene, he beats up Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) after an altercation arising from their teaming up in a Pro-Am Golf Tournament. He parodied the Happy Gilmore fight in a 2014 episode of The Bold and the Beautiful, where he fought Wyatt Spencer after arguing with him.

He was interviewed for The Interviews: An Oral History of Television on July 7, 2000.

Bob Barker

Mr. Barker was a true TV legend. He won 19 Daytime Emmys overall for his work on The Price Is Right. He hosted more than 6,500 episodes. We thank him for the many hours of entertainment that he brought us during his 50-year career on television. He will be greatly missed.

Arleen Sorkin

We also remember actress and writer Arleen Sorkin. She played Geneva on the Fox sitcom Duet. She died on August 24 in Los Angeles, California, of complications from pneumonia and multiple sclerosis. Ms. Sorkin was 67.

Sorkin was known for portraying Calliope Jones on the NBC daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives. She appeared in 427 episodes from 1984 to 1990, 1992, 2001, 2006, and 2010. The wacky but lovable Calliope Jones was employed in Liz Curtis's clothing business and her first scenes featured her making a dress for Anna DiMera. One of her trademarks was her endless collections of hats, which were very creative and sometimes very outlandish.

Arleen Sorkin

She had a recurring role as Geneva, a sexy maid to yuppie couple Richard (Chris Lemmon) and Linda Phillips (Alison LaPlaca), in 25 episodes of the 1987-1989 Fox sitcom Duet. The cast included Matthew Laurance, Mary Page Keller, Jodi Thelen, Larry Poindexter (1987-1988), and Ginger Orsi (1988-1989).

Open House

Sorkin reprised her role of Geneva in three episodes of the Fox sitcom Open House in 1989. The 1989-1990 sitcom was a spin-off of Duet. The cast included Alison LaPlaca, Philip Charles MacKenzie, Mary Page Keller, Chris Lemmon, Danny Gans, Ellen DeGeneres, Nick Tate, Ginger Orsi, and Ray Buktenica.

She guest starred in a 1990 episode of Dream On. She appeared as Rachel, the owner of a monkey, in the final episode of Frasier in 2004.

Sorkin and Paul Slanksy created the 1997-1998 NBC sitcom Fired Up. She was the co-writer of the story and screenplay of the 1997 Jennifer Aniston film Picture Perfect.

Dave Coulier and Arleen Sorkin - America's Funniest People

She co-hosted the first two seasons (1990-1992) of ABC's America's Funniest People with Dave Coulier. The show focused on people intentionally trying to be funny, doing things such as telling jokes, doing impressions, singing, dancing, performing scripted material, attempting wacky stunts, pulling pranks, etc. She was replaced by Tawny Kitaen for seasons three and four.

Sorkin was the real-life inspiration and voice for DC Comics villain Harley Quinn, co-created by her friend Paul Dini on Batman: The Animated Series. She also voiced the character for episodes of The New Batman Adventures, Superman: The Animated Series, Gotham Girls, Static Shock, and Justice League.

She was married to television writer-producer Christopher Lloyd in 1995. He has worked on Frasier, Modern Family and other sitcoms. They had two sons, Eli and Owen.

Ms. Sorkin was a talented and funny actress. We thank her for her onscreen work and voiceover performances as Harley Quinn. She will be deeply missed.

Wolf Like Me

We're having a baby! Season 2 of comedy Wolf Like Me arrives October 19 on Peacock. In the second season of Wolf Like Me, Mary (Isla Fisher) and Gary (Josh Gad) leap into the next phase of their relationship and face their biggest challenge yet: pregnancy. As much as they try to have a "normal" pregnancy, it seems impossible with so many questions looming over them. Will their child be a baby or a wolf pup? Just how long can they keep things secret from the rest of their family? And will what happened in the outback come back to haunt them? But when Mary's former professor, Anton (Edgar Ramirez), suddenly reappears in her life, new secrets from Mary's past are revealed, leaving Mary and Gary to question whether they're even meant to be together. The series stars Isla Fisher and Josh Gad, along with Ariel Donoghue, Edgar Ramirez, Emma Lung, Anthony Taufa, and Honour Latukefu.
