SitcomsOnline Digest: Another South Park "Event" Coming Next Week; Latest Development in Paramount Sale Could Split Up Company

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're hearing of another South Park "event," hearing that Disney is making some major cutbacks on cable, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • It's been a while since we've had one, but another South Park "event," South Park: The End of Obesity, is coming next week to Paramount+. (Variety)
  • In another sign that cable TV is dying, Disney has announced a "dramatic" cutback on what they'll be spending for their cable networks. (Cord Cutters News)
  • Paramount is still for sale, and the latest development suggests that CBS may possibly be split up from the studio itself, which would be history repeating itself yet again. (Deadline)
  • Dabney Coleman, who was more of a film actor but also starred in several short-lived sitcoms, has died at age 92. (NPR)
  • Antenna TV is celebrating the Father Knows Best 70th anniversary with a marathon of 70 episodes, on (appropriately) Father's Day Weekend. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (MAY 18 - MAY 25)

  • Catchy Comedy wraps up their rural comedy binges with a binge of Petticoat Junction this weekend.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Pluto TV Adding 6,300 Episodes from CBS Vault; Tuca & Bertie Cancelled

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we're hearing about new additions to Pluto TV, more cancellations at the hands of Warner Bros Discovery, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • Fans of classic TV should be excited to hear this: Pluto TV is adding 6,300 episodes of classic CBS series from their vault to the streaming service, including Frasier, Cheers, and Petticoat Junction, among others. (Variety)
  • Because almost everything that is proposed at HBO Max get scrapped now that Warner is owned by a company that believes entertainment should be Chip and Joanna Gaines and/or people who are freaks of nature, it shouldn't be a surprise to know that the anticipated Degrassi reboot has met that fate as well. (Variety)
  • But don't worry, as HBO Max continues to bring you less scripted entertainment and more Chip and Joanna Gaines, they have plans to raise the cost of their subscription and double the ads on their ad-free tier. (Deadline)
  • Tuca & Bertie got saved by Adult Swim after Netflix cancelled it but now the network (which is owned by Warner Bros Discover, of course) has cancelled it after two seasons. (The Verge)
  • Just in time for non-stop Christmas movies, Peacock is now streaming Hallmark Channel (as well as the two spinoff channels) for subscribers. (Deadline)
  • CNBC has decided to cancel Shepard Smith's evening news show. (Variety)
  • We have a premiere date for the final season of Dead to Me. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (NOVEMBER 5 - NOVEMBER 11)

  • Decades is on the run with a binge of The Fugitive this weekend.
  • If you're already in the Christmas mood, it's already that time of the year for Hallmark Channel and Lifetime.

Santa Clarita Diet - Maggie Lawson, Joel McHale and Timothy Olyphant

Netflix unveiled some delicious casting news and a first look at the much-anticipated second season of comedy Santa Clarita Diet, launching this spring. Joel McHale and Maggie Lawson guest star as Chris and Christa, married realtors in Santa Clarita -- and a more successful, more aggressive version of Sheila and Joel. Gerald McRaney guest stars as Ed Thune, a retired army colonel who Joel finds very intimidating. Zachary Knighton guest stars as Paul, the chill descendent of Serbian ancestors who has been tasked with pursuing the truth of the undead, no matter who or what stands in his way. In Santa Clarita Diet, Joel (Timothy Olyphant) and Sheila (Drew Barrymore) are husband and wife realtors leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita with their teenaged daughter Abby (Liv Hewson), until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending their lives down a road of death and destruction...but in a good way.

Picking up right where we left off, Season 2 of Santa Clarita Diet finds the Hammonds trying to adapt to Sheila's now-advanced undead state -- even though she's desperately working to hold on to her suburban lifestyle and not be defined as just another monster. Unfortunately -- while the family has become markedly better at murder -- the number of missing people in Santa Clarita is starting to pile up and it's no longer going unnoticed. Meanwhile, the Hammonds are chasing the source of the virus so they can stop it from spreading and save humanity -- which seems important. Through it all, Sheila and Joel are grounded by their unconditional love for one another. Sure, being undead -- or loving someone who is -- isn't always easy, but don't all relationships have their challenges?

Room 222 Now on ASPiRE; Remembering Mike Minor of Petticoat Junction

Room 222

The classic sitcom Room 222 is now on ASPiRE, airing every weekday morning at 7:00am & 7:30am. The sitcom is leading into another classic late '60s comedy, Julia, from 8-9am. ASPiRE also airs The Flip Wilson Show, Soul Food and The Mod Squad. In Room 222, Pete Dixon is a dedicated and popular history teacher who fights the good fight on the side of his students. Joining him in his idealistic approach to education are guidance counselor Liz McIntyre and student teacher Alice Johnson. Experienced and slightly world-weary principal Seymour Kaufman provides a balance to the youthful idealism of the 60s cultural revolution but at the end of the day everyone is on the side of the students.

Mike Minor

Actor Mike Minor, who starred as Steve Elliott in Petticoat Junction, has died. He died in New York City on January 28. Mr. Minor was 75.

Pat Woodell

Actress and singer Pat Woodell, who was best known for her role as Bobbie Jo Bradley in the first two seasons of Petticoat Junction, has died. She died on September 29 at her home in Fallbrook, California, after a long battle with cancer. Ms. Woodell was 71.

Pat Woodell

Woodell starred as the first Bobbie Jo Bradley in seasons one and two of Petticoat Junction from 1963-1965. Her book-loving character appeared in 64 out of 74 episodes. She performed musical numbers in several episodes, including "The Ladybugs." The Ladybugs, a Beatles parody group, consisted of her TV sisters Linda Kaye, Jeannine Riley, together with Sheila James. The Ladybugs also appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. Woodell was replaced by Lori Saunders after she left to promote her singing career. She was interviewed and provided episode introductions for the season one and two DVD releases of the series in 2008-2009.

Some of her other television guest appearances included Cheyenne, Hawaiian Eye, The Gallant Man, GE True, 77 Sunset Strip, Bright Promise and The New Perry Mason. She retired from acting in 1973.

Melody Patterson

We remember another 1960s sitcom actress. Melody Patterson was best known for her role Wrangler Jane in F Troop. She died on August 20 at a nursing home in Hollister, Missouri, of multiple organ failure. Ms. Patterson was 66.

Melody Patterson

Patterson starred as Jane Angelica Thrift/Wrangler Jane in the ABC sitcom F Troop from 1965-1967. Her hard-riding, fast-shooting cowgirl character owned Wrangler Jane's Trading Post and ran the U.S. post office in town. She was Captain Wilton Parmenter's (Ken Berry) beautiful but tomboyish, feisty, romantically aggressive girlfriend. Patterson was only 16 years old when she first appeared on the show.

Some of her sitcom guest appearances included Wendy and Me, The Monkees and Green Acres. Her drama guest appearances included Adam-12 and three episodes of Hawaii Five-O. She was married to Hawaii Five-O star James MacArthur from 1970-1975. She is survived by her husband, Vern Miller.

We thank these talented and beautiful actresses for the entertainment they brought us in their classic 1960s sitcoms. They will be deeply missed.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Must See TV on NBC Officially Dead; Enlisted and Back in the Game on MOD DVD

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! Things are settling down in the world of sitcom news as we are approaching Christmas, but we're here with news of the (official) death of Must See TV, David Letterman's exit from The Late Show, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • NBC's Thursday night lineup has been a haven for sitcoms for the past 34 years, and most (if not all) of NBC's successful and memorable sitcoms since 1980 have aired as part of that lineup for most of their run. Now, it is completely dead, as NBC has turned Thursday night into drama night. (Complex)
  • Zap2It has ranked NBC's "Must See TV" sitcoms from best to worst, with Seinfeld making it to the top and Coupling making it to the bottom at #62. (Zap2it)
  • May 20 will be David Letterman's last night on The Late Show. No word yet on when Stephen Colbert will take over. (Washington Post)
  • Murder, She Wrote will debut on one of the broadcast retro networks for the first time ever on COZI TV in January. (SitcomsOnline)
  • MeTV is also looking ahead to a new lineup beginning January 1. (SitcomsOnline)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS

  • CBS will be releasing Petticoat Junction - Family Favorites on March 10, and while we don't know the exact content of this eight episode disc, it will likely consist of episodes from the seasons of the series that have been released so far.
  • Enlisted didn't last long on Fox, but it can last a lot longer on your DVD shelf, as Fox has released Enlisted - The Complete Series as a MOD release.
  • Another short-lived series is also available as a MOD release from Fox: 2013's Back in the Game, with Back in the Game - The Complete Series.

DECEMBER 16 HOME MEDIA RELEASES

  • Batman - The Complete Series (Blu-ray, $239.99): If this release sounds familiar, that is because technically it is already out on Blu-ray, but now Warner Home Video is bringing fans a lower priced version without the extras.
  • The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis - The Final Season (DVD, $29.93): While the complete series was released long ago, Shout! now finishes up the individual season releases.

Claim to Fame: As we continue on our child stars from the past theme again this week, we have a child star from the series that really did give child stars a bad name: Diff'rent Strokes. Looking at the child stars from that series, Dana Plato was in trouble for armed robbery and dealt with drug abuse issues, Gary Coleman had a nasty financial battle with his parents, and Todd Bridges dealt with drug abuse and was even charged with the attempted murder of a drug dealer. Unfortunately, Plato and Coleman are no longer living, but Bridges is, and unlike the other two, he has managed to turn his life into something much more positive over the past two decades, and carrying a very positive and upbeat attitude towards life. Most recently, he had a recurring role on Everybody Hates Chris, as well as appearing in several reality shows. Among one of my personal favorite appearances of Bridges is his appearance in the video for The Black Keys song "Howlin' for You." As many of his fellow cast members have died since the series (in addition to the kids mentioned, Conrad Bain, Dixie Carter, Nedra Volz, and even Mary Ann Mobley), he seems to be among the few who will live the longest to remind us of the series.

SitcomsOnline Digest: ABC Limiting Next Day Online Streaming; More Newhart on DVD

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This is the last weekend before everything gets back to normal on Monday, so we've still got a little bit of a light news week for you this week... but not too light! Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • If you enjoy watching your favorite ABC series the next day online, it could be coming to an end for you, depending upon your circumstances. The network announced that they will restrict next-day streaming of series to subscribers of a list of specific cable companies (which includes Comcast, but leaves large holes by not include DISH Network, DirecTV, or Time Warner Cable) and subscribers of Hulu+. This follows a similar move made by Fox in 2011, but for now, CBS and NBC continue to offer this programming for free to everybody. (TVLine)
  • Chevy Chase left the series Community at the end of the fourth season, and it appeared that there was no way that he could possibly return... but he did (at least temporarily). Dan Harmon discusses the hurdles that he had to go through to make this happen with TV Guide. (TV Guide)
  • If you're wondering when your favorite mid-season series will return (or debut), Deadline has a rather thorough rundown of debut dates for several series through March. (Deadline)
  • Netflix has plenty of categories for every type of television that anybody may possible want to see... 76,897, to be exact. As it turns out, the most popular actor in these categories is Raymond Burr, best known for his role as Perry Mason and Ironside. (Deadline)
  • We lost quite a few sitcom stars in 2013. Earlier this week, we compiled a 2013 tribute to some of these people. (SitcomsOnline)

Digital Digest: Color Episodes of Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction Coming to DVD; Simpsons Season 16 News; Castle - The Complete Fifth Season DVD Review

Welcome to Digital Digest! We've got a busy news week this week, and we've also got a review of Castle - The Complete Fifth Season. Let's get started!

DIGITAL NEWS

It has been a long time since we last saw The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction on DVD, but it seems that the wait will be over soon... sort of! This week, CBS announced that both The Beverly Hillbillies - The Official Fourth Season and Petticoat Junction - The Official Third Season (the first color season for both series) are indeed coming to DVD on October 1. But in a rather unusual move (at least for CBS), these titles will be available exclusively at Walmart and Sam's Club stores. The sets will be priced at just under $20, although it is important to note that we really do not expect to see many (if any) special features on these sets. It is very likely that we'll see these sets appear elsewhere at a later date, but until then, you know where to find them starting in October!

TVShowsOnDVD.com reported late Friday that we're about to see more of The Simpsons on DVD and Blu-ray. It probably doesn't come as a huge surprise that Fox is planning a release of the series for December (as usual), but The Simpsons - The Complete Sixteenth Season will feature the entire season, a ton of special features in of a box featuring Professor Frink's head! The set will be released on December 5.

Another interesting piece of news comes from Mill Creek this week as they seem to have acquired the rights to re-release the sitcom Wings on DVD, beginning with an October 1 re-release of Wings - Seasons 1 and 2. The value-priced collection will come at a $14.98 MSRP. This release comes as a bit of a surprise since we haven't seen any studio put together value-priced re-releases of series from the CBS library, but hopefully this is just the beginning of many things to come.

That isn't all that Mill Creek has in store for October 1. They'll also continue the '80s animated series Heathcliff with Heathcliff - Season One, Volume Two. It has been a while since we've seen the series on DVD, but this 33 episode set finishes out the first season on DVD.

CBS wants fans to get caught up on the last season of their current series before the new seasons kick off, and you can do just that with their Catch Up Marathons on cbs.com. Before the new TV season starts, you can catch up on all of last season's episodes of hits including Elementary, The Good Wife, Hawaii Five-O, The Mentalist The Amazing Race, Survivor, and Undercover Boss.

UPCOMING WEEK PREVIEW

Tuesday (September 10) brings us The Big Bang Theory - The Complete Sixth Season (DVD and Blu-ray) as well as Shout! Factory's release of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis - Season One (see our complete series review). Finally, ABC has Castle - The Complete Fifth Season, which we review in today's Digital Digest.

BLOG FEATURE REVIEW

Blog DVD Review: Castle - The Complete Fifth Season (ABC, $45.99)
by Pavan

Together at last! After four seasons of sparring and heated banter, TV's dynamic crime-solving team finds romance in ABC's Castle: The Complete Fifth Season. Relive all 24 unforgettable episodes, complete with never-before-seen bonus features only available on DVD, in this spectacular five-disc set. Now that Castle and Beckett (aka "Caskett") have finally given into their true feelings for each other, how will it affect their work together? As they try to keep their new relationship under wraps from their co-workers, the unlikely duo must track down the murderer of Beckett's mother, find the perpetrator of a major conspiracy, and untangle a line of investigation that links Castle to a ritualistic killing. The action and passion heat up like never before in the brilliant fifth season of ABC's Castle on this 5-disc set packed with bonus features!
The series will return to its Mondays at 10PM timeslot on ABC this coming season following Dancing with the Stars once again. The series stars Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, Stana Katic as Detective Kate Beckett, Jon Huertas as Detective Javier Esposito, Seamus Dever as Detective Kevin Ryan, Tamala Jones as Medical Examiner Dr. Lanie Parish, Penny Johnson Jerald as Captain Victoria Gates, Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle, and Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers. Among the recurring stars are Arye Gross as Medical Examiner Dr. Sidney Perlmutter, Scott Paulin as Jim Becket, Juliana Dever as Jenny, and Geoff Pierson as Mr. Smith. Among the guests this year are Jack Coleman, Darby Stanchfield, Jack Wagner, Mark Deklin, Kelly Hu, Gina Torres, Patrick Fabian, Gail O'Grady, Dylan Walsh, Wes Craven, Brad William Henke, Kyle Secor, Raphael Sbarge and Catherine Dent.

The fifth season was as usual great and Castle and Beckett are finally together and it is steamy! It's the most watched season yet and the show celebrated its 100th episode this season. As I keep saying, I don't like most crime shows of today, but this one is a throwback to the ones of the past and focuses on characters than more about the case. I like that! As far as memorable episodes, we have the season premiere "After the Storm," and it picks up where left off on the fourth season finale on the proverbial morning after, with Castle and Beckett facing new questions -- Was this a one-time fling, or are they now a couple...but before they find the answers, they must take on the forces responsible for Beckett's mother's murder that now threaten Kate Beckett's life. In "Murder, He Wrote," Castle and Beckett's plans for a romantic weekend in the Hamptons are interrupted when a dying man stumbles into Castle's backyard, collapsing into his pool and unable to escape the lure of the investigation they join up with the small town's well-intentioned, but inexperienced sheriff to find the killer. In "Probable Cause," while investigating a shocking ritualistic murder, Beckett and her team uncover surprising evidence linking Castle to the killing, as the evidence against him mounts, loyalties are tested, and when surprising revelations come to light, Beckett begins to wonder how well she really knows her new lover and partner of four years. In "After Hours," in the aftermath of a disastrous "Meet the Parents" dinner, a bickering Castle and Beckett are sent to retrieve the only witness to a murder, but when they get ambushed, they're forced to take the witness on the run and stranded in the middle of the night in a bad part of town, with no phone, badge or gun, Castle and Beckett must find a way to protect him from a team of mobsters who want him silenced -- that is, if they don't kill each other first.

In "Recoil," while investigating the murder of a young woman, Castle and Beckett find evidence that links her death with Senator William H. Bracken, the man responsible for Beckett's mother's murder, and determined to finally bring Bracken to justice, Beckett soon realizes that things are far more complicated than they seem. In the first half of a two-part story arc, "Target," Castle and Beckett find themselves in a race against time when they unearth a plot to kidnap Sarah el-Masri, the daughter of a powerful foreign dignitary, and the stakes are raised when they learn that Alexis was also kidnapped, and every lead they follow ends with the discovery of another dead body. In the powerful conclusion of a two-episode story arc, "Hunt," when the FBI fails to get his daughter back, Castle takes matters into his own hands, reaching out to a shadowy fixer to help him recover Alexis, but Castle soon learns that his daughter's kidnapping may be part of an even more sinister agenda. In the show's 100th episode, "The Lives of Others," Castle finds himself in the unfortunate position of NOT being able to work a case, while he's holed up in the loft with a broken leg, Beckett goes off to investigate the death of an IRS agent without him, leaving Castle miserable and bored, but when he thinks he witnesses the murder of a young woman in the apartment across the street, he is thrown into a "Rear Window"-esque murder mystery that hits much too close to home. In "The Squab and the Quail," when Beckett is assigned to protect Erik Vaughn, a charming billionaire entrepreneur whose life is in danger, she's forced to reflect on her relationship with Castle which has begun to plateau, while consumed with jealousy, Castle goes to extraordinary lengths to solve the case and separate the two of them. In "The Human Factor," when Homeland Security inexplicably seals the crime scene of a car bombing, Castle and Beckett find themselves with two mysteries on their hands: who murdered the victim, a government whistleblower, and why are federal agents trying to take over the case? In the must-see season finale, "Watershed," an interview with a high-profile federal law enforcement agency forces Beckett to reconsider what she wants out of her job and out of her relationship with Castle, while the body of a young woman is found floating inside the water tank of a skid row flop house, but as the team investigate, they discover that her final resting place is just one of many strange things about her death.

The episodes run usually 42-43 minutes...unedited of course with all the great music intact. See the runtimes below:

Disc 1
1. "After the Storm" 43:01
2. "Cloudy with a Chance of Murder" 42:24
3. "Secret's Safe with Me" 43:01

Packaging has a thin outer box that you can remove from the top or bottom to get to the case inside, just like the previous sets. Both the thin outer box and case have the same artwork for both the front and back. The cover has another nice (and sexy) shot of Castle and Beckett as they are both handcuffed. The show logo is present in white lettering towards the bottom. The tagline "Caught in the act" appears above the logo. The back has a dark brown background with information on the set, four episodic screen shots from episodes and also a nice photo of Castle & Beckett in black. There is also a box detailing the bonus features with technical specifications also.
Opening the case, on the left side we see an inserts which includes an ad for the upcoming Castle book Deadly Heat. There is also an ad for the Castle graphic novels and the Castle video game. We also get three Castle Trading Cards on this set -- how cool! They are officially coming out in Winter 2013! Back to the case, on both the left and right panels we have many episodic photos and a disc-by-disc breakdown of episode titles below that. The discs are on plastic holders, like the previous set, that you can flip a page in a book. The first plastic holder holds disc one on the front side and disc two on the back side. The second plastic holds disc three on the front side and disc four on the back side. Disc five is on the right panel itself. Disc artwork is very nice and has that dark brown background, matching the set's color scheme. Disc one has episodes 1-5 with artwork of Richard Castle. Disc two has episodes 6-10 and has artwork of Kate Beckett (in a trench coast with sexy hair, Jesus!). Disc three has episodes 11-15 and has artwork of Ryan & Esposito. Disc four has episodes 16-20 and has artwork of Alexis & Martha. And disc five has episodes 21-24 plus the bulk of the bonus features and has artwork of Lanie & Captain Gates. This style is similar to the previous sets.

The menu screen starts in the style of the opening title from the series with the theme music in the background, then we get to the main menu where we see moving video images with the closing theme playing in the background, similar to the previous sets. The options on the main menu are Play All, Episode Selection, Set Up, Bonus Features (or Deleted Scenes), and Sneak Peeks. But before the main menu screen comes on disc one, we get some auto sneak peeks: Revenge Season 2, ABC TV on DVD, and Once Upon a Time Season 2. Sneak Peeks option is only found on disc five on the main menu and has an ABC Image promo and a trailer for The Lone Ranger. Set Up section has the option of subtitles in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese and how you can register your DVD. The Episodes option gives us the episode number, title and a screenshot. Bonus Features option has all the extras listed and this is on every disc once again, rather than just disc five. All of the sub-menus have different background music from the show. Catchy!

The video is digitally mastered and is in widescreen and looks very good! The audio is great and sounds very good, as it is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Both the audio and video are similar to the previous sets. This is from 2012-2013, so it had better be good. There is nothing to complain at all here...it is perfect! Perfection here. There are about 7 chapter stops per episode. We get to hear the closing theme as well, whistles and all! All of the "previously on Castle" teasers that were used in a few episodes are intact. Not much to report here, but that is a good thing since this part of the DVDs are always perfect. I wish we had a Blu-ray version of this show and that would be beyond perfection! Imagine watching Stana Katic in Blu-ray (or Nathan Fillion for you females out there)!

Moving on the bonus features. For disc one, we have three deleted scenes from the episode "After the Storm" (0:37, 0:21, 1:10) and a deleted scene from the episode "Probable Cause" (0:16). For disc two, we have a deleted scene (0:14). We get audio commentaries again, for the third straight set. We have audio commentary for "The Final Frontier" director Jonathan Frakes, star Nathan Fillion and costume designer Luke Reichle. This is very informative and fun as these are a fun group of people. On to disc three, we have a deleted scene from the episode "Recoil" (0:27), then a deleted scene from the episode "Reality Star Struck" (0:23) and a deleted scene from the episode "Target" (0:23). We also have an audio commentary on the thrilling episode "Target" from executive producer/writer David Aamann, Director Bill Roe, and stars Susan Sullivan & Molly C. Quinn! These guys are just as fun as the guys from the other audio commentary! For disc four, we have a deleted scene from the episode "Hunt" (0:42) and two deleted scenes from the episode "The Lives of Others" (0:20, 0:58). We also have audio commentary on "Hunt." This was part two of the two-part thriller and commenting are creator/executive producer/writer Andrew W. Marlowe, executive producer/director Rob Bowman, and stars Nathan Fillion & Molly C. Quinn. We get more facts from part two of the two-part episode! Disc four also has another audio commentary for the episode "The Lives of Others." Commenting on the landmark 100th episode are Andrew W. Marlowe, writer/producer Terri Edda Miller, editor Marta Evry and composer Robert Duncan.

On to disc five, where the bulk of the extras are! We have a deleted scene for the season finale "Watershed" (1:14). Onto the main features, we have "Martha's Master Class" (7:39). Castle's mother Martha herself recaps the surprise birthday stunt for her son. This is cleverly done. Up next we have "Your Home Is Your Castle" (22:20). On this featurette, interior design star Vern Yip gives fans exclusive access to Castle's penthouse and Beckett's loft. On the way we meet Alfred Sole (production designer), Damon Hight (propmaker foreman), Sabrina Kleier-Morgenstern, Martha Kleier & Samantha Kleier-Forbes (Kieler Residential), Stana Katic, Andrew W. Marlowe, Nathan Fillion, Molly C. Quinn, and Susan Sullivan. Then we have "Lot Cops" (12:12). The always unpredictable Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever bring fans along on a tactical training course to ensure authenticity in the series. We see technical advisors Mike Lee and Tony "Kicker" Nevada do some training with them. Finally, we have some "Bloopers" (6:14)...yes all the hilarious flubs and outtakes! See all the goofs and play on the set, as we two minutes more of bloopers this time! Wow!

Another wonderful season and set! Season 5 is a landmark season, as not only because we get the 100th episode, but Castle and Beckett are finally together and it is everything we want it to be! I recommend this series and set once again...it is an ABC Studios DVD, so it is good and filled with special features. This series thrived in this fifth year, from start to finish. Season two was when it started to break out, and it continues and gets better each season, I think. This DVD is awesome as we get of course all 24 great episodes from the fifth season, great packaging, and great extras. The DVD is coming out on Sept. 10, just in time for the sixth season premiere on Sept. 23 on ABC. ABC has been re-airing the show this summer on Sundays before moving back to Mondays in late August. So I hope you saw them all, if not, for sure get this DVD. And if you've never watched an episode, the series airs in syndication on TNT weekdays and in weekend syndication in broadcast syndication, so check your local listings for time and station! Everyone needs to be watching this show because it's just not bland procedural as this has a bit of everything (romance, comedy, drama, action and mystery). The season finale ended in another cliffhanger and we will see the conclusion on the season premiere. I've seen that premiere already and it is AMAZING! Tune in, but before that...get this DVD! The electrifying chemistry between Fillion and Katic continues, and you all need to buy the set by clicking below to see it for yourself! So, yo, get this DVD before Espo gets mad!

Claim to Fame: While the name may not seem too familiar, McLendon-Covey got her start in 2003 on the series Reno 911!, where she appeared for five years. Since then, she has made recurring appearances in Rules of Engagement as well as guest appearances in series including The Office, Cougar Town, Hot in Cleveland, and Modern Family. Soon, she will be starring as the mother, Barbara, in the upcoming ABC sitcom The Goldbergs.
Why You Should Follow Her: These actors and actresses that we tend to not know as well are always the most interesting to follow on Twitter, because it gives us a chance to get to know them a bit better. But the even more intriguing possibility is that we never know where these new sitcoms are going to go. Digital Digest: Arrested Development Returning in a Big Way; Shout! Factory Updates; Petticoat Junction - Return to Hooterville DVD Review

Welcome to Digital Digest! This week, we've got some updates on Arrested Development, Shout! Factory titles, and a review of Petticoat Junction - Return to Hooterville. Let's get going!

DIGITAL NEWS

We're sure that fans have already heard the "big news" by now (and we've been talking about it for quite some time), but fans of the sitcom Arrested Development now have a firm date on when they'll be able to enjoy new episodes on Netflix. On Sunday, May 26 at 12:01 AM (that is Memorial Day weekend), the new episodes will debut on the streaming service. But it won't be one episode of the series, or even two for that matter. In fact, it will be a whopping fifteen new episodes of the series, all on one day! We have a feeling that fans of the series will be right there at 12:01 to stream all fifteen episodes. Arrested Development centers around Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) and his eccentric family comprised of his son George Michael (Michael Cera), his father George Bluth Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor), his mother Lucille (Jessica Walter), his brothers George Oscar Bluth II (Will Arnett), Buster Bluth (Tony Hale) and sister Lindsay Funke (Portia de Rossi), and Lindsay's husband Tobias (David Cross) and their daughter Maeby (Alia Shawkat). As of now, this is slated to be the final season of the series (a way to wrap it up since Fox didn't allow that six years ago), but if more episodes are to come, we'll let you know!

Heading back over to the DVD side of things, some pre-order listings for some Shout! Factory releases popped up online lately, with one of the biggest ones being for The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis - The Complete Series. It was announced a few months ago that this would be coming, but now a preliminary release date of July 2 has been set for this megaset. No details have been given yet on what (if any) special features will be included, but so far it is known that it will be a 20 disc set that will come at a $139.99 MSRP.

Meanwhile, Shout! is moving ahead with Quincy, M.E. with a July 9 release of Quincy, M.E. - Season 6. The five-disc set will come at a $39.97 MSRP. And, to follow up both of these releases, Shout! has the long-awaited release of The Jack Benny Program - The Lost Episodes coming up on July 23. It sounds like it'll be a busy summer for Shout!, and we can't wait to see what may be in store for August!

UPCOMING WEEK PREVIEW

Tuesday (April 9) isn't a big release date, but it does bring us the long-awaited release of Family Ties - The Sixth Season (review) and The Dick Van Dyke Show - The Complete First Season (Blu-ray).

BLOG FEATURE REVIEW

Blog DVD Review: Petticoat Junction - Return to Hooterville (MPI, $14.98)
by skees53

In the early '60s, Paul Henning had made The Beverly Hillbillies a success for CBS. In fact, it was so successful that CBS craved more from the creator, and he came back to bring more success in 1963 with Petticoat Junction. It went on to last for almost a decade with over 200 episodes, until it was eventually canceled... in fact, it left the air even before CBS did their complete "rural purge." Although there have been some DVD releases of episodes of the series, MPI has now put together a single DVD that is essentially a "special features" DVD, bringing fans a full-length documentary, cast commercials, cast appearances on other series, and more.

Before we even begin, we should give an important disclaimer: much of the material seen on this DVD is a repeat of the special features from MPI's release of Petticoat Junction - The Ultimate Collection (review). The main feature on this DVD is "The History of Hooterville" (46:37). In this interview, we hear from Linda Kaye Henning, Gunilla Hutton, Mike Minor, Frank Cady, Shirley Mitchell, and Charles Lane as they all relive the history of the series through all seven seasons and recount their own personal memories of the series. Like many features, this is a "repeat" feature from 2005, which explains why Frank Cady and Charles Lane both appear in it. However, there is a slight update at the end for the "in memory of" screen, as Lane and Cady's names have been added to that list.

Cast commercials (10:18) is a series of cast commercials used from the first season of the series. These are basically plugs that cast members did (in character) at the end of the episode for the sponsor of the series, which happened to be Procter & Gamble. This is almost like what was included on the previous release from MPI, but they actually included nine this time (as opposed to just eight). However, Linda Kaye Henning's introduction is gone.

Outtakes and Production Footage (22:04) is something new for fans. For one of the first times (ever), we actually get to see some full color footage from the series on DVD! This features a lot of clips of recording stock footage for the series, photos from production, and a few outtakes from some of the color episodes of the series. Unfortunately, all of this is silent in the sense that none of the audio is included with the clips... but there IS some audio, as Linda Kaye Henning and Jim Pierson talk about what is going on in the form of commentary. Despite how technical it is, I really enjoyed it.

"The Girls From Petticoat Junction" (2:10) seems to be mostly a promotional plug for an album called Sixties Sounds - The Girls From Petticoat Junction, which features Linda Kaye Henning, Meredith MacRae, and Lori Saunders.

"Shady Rest Memories" (14:14) is one of the "new" special features for this set, and it is almost like an extension to the main feature. Here, Jack Bannon (son of Bea Benaderet, series dialog coach, and guest actor on the series) talks a lot about his own memories of the series. He spends a lot of time talking about his memories of his mother as well, of course, which fans of the series are sure to appreciate.

"Original Promotional Spots" (3:44) is a series of original promos for the series from CBS. All of these are presented in color.

"Before Benji: The Story of Higgins" (16:38) is a short documentary about the life of Higgins, the four-legged actor who played the unnamed dog on the series. Of course, it mostly focuses on his more famous role as Benji. This is a very old documentary that was very obviously made in 1976, and has all of the production qualities of a bad '70s film strip... but to be honest, that actually makes it much more interesting and gives it a very nostalgic feeling.

"A Cannonball Christmas" (30:28) is actually a full-length episode of the series, which is "padded" a bit with an introduction from Linda Kaye Henning, and even a special Christmas message from Linda Kaye Henning and Frank Cady at the end of the episode.

Finally, there are some Special Petticoat Appearances, which gives us appearances of cast members on other series (or in some cases, radio... you didn't think MPI would let a release slide without a Let's Talk to Lucy feature, did you?). These include appearances of Bea Benaderet on Talent Scouts (3:02), The Danny Kaye Show (29:55), and Let's Talk to Lucy (17:45). For Linda Kaye Henning, we get to see appearances from Keene at Noon (10:38), The Song Is You (5:02), and The Perfect Match (21:44). The most interesting of all of these is The Perfect Match, which is apparently a long lost '60s game show where a high tech computer matches up couples... and prizes are involved too. The winner of the episode seen here won an attache case.

The packaging for the DVD is rather standard, using a basic Amaray case. On the cover, there is a photo of the girls from Petticoat Junction, and there are a few more photos on the back. There is a list of some (but not all) of the features on the back as well. The disc itself has the same photo seen on the front cover of the DVD case.

The DVD is packaged in a standard DVD case, with a cast photo on the cover (you'll notice that only three of the eight people pictured were original cast members). There are a few more photos on the back, along with a brief description of the movie and a list of special features. Inside, you'll find the disc, which has the same artwork as seen on the cover.

The menus on the DVD are fine, but nothing very special. The main menu simply has a list of all of the options on the DVD, along with a "Next" option (since they don't all fit on one menu). There is an option to turn on subtitles, but unfortunately, those are only available for the main feature on the DVD. Chapters are placed in all places where they should be in each feature.

For a DVD like this, it isn't really productive to comment on the video and audio quality. Most of the material on here is archival footage with questionable sources, so aside from the interviews, expect it to things to look OK at best. However, nothing is really terrible. The audio on the DVD is in mono, of course, and while the set proclaims to have subtitles, you'll only find it on the main feature (The History of Hooterville).

I wouldn't call this a bad DVD, but it only offers special features for the series, and nothing more. In addition, some of these are special features that we've seen before (but not quite as many as I initially believed). If you're a huge fan of the series, you'll want to own this DVD. But if you are anything but a huge fan, you may or may not be interested in this. It gives a lot of special features, but doesn't get us any further in getting more episodes on DVD (which in all fairness, MPI isn't responsible for that holdup). In short, this is a great collection of features for fans of the series, but if you're looking for episodes, you'll just have to wait for CBS to release more.

Who to Follow: Sarah Chalke (Twitter), "I can write with my feet."
Claim to Fame: Sarah Chalke first became known to American TV audiences in 1993 when she played Becky (well, one of them anyway) on the popular sitcom Roseanne. Even though she only sporadically played the role (constantly swapping the position with Lecy Goranson, the "other" Becky), Chalke later went on to star as Dr. Eliot Reed in Scrubs. In addition, she has appeared in How I Met Your Mother and Cougar Town, and currently, she stars in the ABC sitcom How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life).
Why You Should Follow Her: Chalke is, by all means, well on her way to becoming a sitcom legend. She isn't even 40 yet, but she has already spent a large chunk of her adult life as a sitcom actress, and regardless of what happens with her new series, it seems unlikely that she will be disappearing from our screens anytime soon. She is still relatively new to Twitter, but we don't anticipate her leaving soon, and only expect her to become a bigger star as time goes on.

Seven Questions with Haywood Nelson of What's Happening!!; COZI TV Soft Launches with Classic Holiday Episodes

Hay, HAY, Hay! Today we have a very special "Seven Questions" interview with Haywood Nelson! He of course is best known to sitcom fans as Dwayne Nelson on the very popular '70s sitcom What's Happening!! and the '80s follow-up series What's Happening Now!! Mr. Nelson had great comedic timing and gelled well with Ernest Thomas and the late Fred Berry very well on those series. We talked to him about What's Happening!! of course but we also delved deeper in his career and life and we got some insight of how he started his career, what he is doing now, and other very interesting tidbits! So let's get right to another installment of "Seven Questions!"

"Seven Questions with Haywood Nelson From What's Happening!!"

SitcomsOnline: Hi, Haywood! Thanks for taking the time to do "Seven Questions" with us. We appreciate it and are very grateful! I personally have been a huge fan of both What's Happening!! and What's Happening Now!! and loved watching it! You were great on both shows and you were definitely a fan favorite! Before we get into What's Happening!!, not many people know that one of your first regular roles was on the short-lived Sanford & Son spin-off series Grady, starring the late Whitman Mayo. How was it working on that series as a child and how did you get interested in acting?
Haywood Nelson: Working on the series Grady was very exciting. The opportunity to work along side Whitman Mayo was incredible. I was a complete fan and his comedic timing was impeccable. Coming fresh off of Sanford and Son Whitman's show was a spin-off. I found myself surrounded by comedic icons Redd Fox, Whitman Mayo, Lawanda Page, and a host of others including Joe Morton, Carol Cole, Nathaniel Taylor, Ray Allen, and Hal Williams. It was great.
My interest in acting began early, at age five in the advertising industry. I had a short stint on As The World Turns while most of my work came from the advertising industry. Many commercials were completed before moving into a feature film Mixed Company and on to Broadway in Thieves. I actually screen tested for quite some time with Bern'Nadette Stanis for the Norman Lear series Good Times. This was all prior to the Grady series.

Haywood Nelson - Grady

SitcomsOnline: After Grady was over, the following TV season (1976-77) you were cast as Dwayne on ABC's new sitcom What's Happening!! How did you get the role and how did this change your life? I think females were going crazy over you, for sure! Despite the series only lasting three seasons, it was very popular and was huge in syndication after the network run was over in 1980. The show was as popular in syndication as some other series that lasted three seasons or less like Gilligan's Island, Batman and The Munsters. I certainly think What's Happening!! belongs on that list!
Haywood Nelson: When Grady was canceled Whitman Mayo came to my mother and I and said there was a show he wanted me to audition for. That it was very special and I was perfect for it. They required that we depart for New York ASAP. The audition was packed with hopefuls. The show was the TV series of the movie Cooley High which is an all-time favorite film of mine. That and The Big Chill were two at the top of my list. Auditioning was a breeze since I knew the film characters so well. It was only a matter of weeks and I was back on a stage in Los Angeles. The show was quickly being retitled. They asked for names that were hip. Everyone at the table was shouting out ideas. They wanted something popular and hip, I was from New York and a teenager. The answer was easy for me, "What's Happenin." They loved it and named the show What's Happening!!
My personal life for the most part remained the same. Unless in public. There, all anonymity was gone. That took some adjusting to. I also had a lot less time to play drums, draw, or ride motocross. All that are sacrifices temporarily acceptable to me with that type of career path. Also acting in What's Happening!! I saw as an opportunity to make a difference with break out influence. Hence the "Hay HAY Hay." While the girls went wild I was less interested in driving popularity with them as I was interested in seeing more black faces on television.

What's Happening!!

SitcomsOnline: It seemed the cast, particularly you, Ernest Thomas, Fred Berry, Shirley Hemphill and Danielle Spencer, had great chemistry on this show. It was definitely an appealing show for all ages, particularly younger audiences. Can you share some memorable moments you had with them during this era? Also, what did you love about the character of Dwayne Nelson (how cool that they named Dwayne's last name the same as yours!)?
Haywood Nelson: The chemistry on the show was magical. We instantly became family. The best memories are the blooper worthy show stopping laughing fits. What I loved about the character Dwayne was his honesty. He felt his own sense of style and was committed to getting it out. Yet nothing took a backseat to his innocent common sense, unless he got excited where he was prone to cluelessness. Fun to play!

Haywood Nelson - What's Happening!!

SitcomsOnline: The series was canceled after its third season despite still decent ratings and ratings even going up overall from the previous season. I know there was some behind-the-scenes issues that were going on this season and probably had more of a say ultimately in the cancelation. I don't want to point any fingers at anyone or anything, but how was it like during this time and did you think the show would be actually canceled? I'm sure fans, and the cast as well, were disappointed that there was no fourth season.
Haywood Nelson: I did not think the series would be cancelled. Behind-the-scenes chicanery aside, the show was very popular. I thought at most there would be some measure of conduct regulation imposed. I never thought it would be cancelled with the strong ratings and statistics it maintained.

SitcomsOnline: So after What's Happening!! was finished in 1979, you focused on technology and were quite successful. I know you told me before when we first met that you always were interested in technology. Can you talk about how this interest came about and how you got into that area after What's Happening!! finished its three-season run?
Haywood Nelson: I've always had an interest in technology. Starting with motorcycle, aerospace, and architecture. The architecture drove me into Electronics Engineering which led to Telecommunications, Satellite Broadcasting, and the first Dotcom. By the time the internet bubble burst I had been prominent in several tech start-ups. Over the course of many years struggling to get rebounded I've partnered with others whose journey mirrors my own and we've built two very strong efforts. One in traditional media and the other in 3D gaming and service entertainment commerce.

Haywood Nelson - What's Happening Now!!

SitcomsOnline: Then six years after What's Happening!! finished its run, a new follow-up series in 1985 was born titled What's Happening Now!! Everyone came back basically, except Mabel King, and I thought the show was very funny! It was so great to see Raj, Dwayne and Rerun as young adults. How did this show come about and were you reluctant in doing it since you had moved on to the tech side? I think the ratings were so good in syndication, the series deserved coming back. And I really liked that they made Dwayne interested in computers...was that something you suggested since you yourself are interested?
Haywood Nelson: What's Happening Now!! was developed from an effort that Ernest Thomas put out. I was in engineering school when I was contacted. I was very hesitant to leave my junior year of school, yet was not comfortable with anyone else reprising my role. So I decided to make a go of it against my better judgment. It was the producer's idea to make Dwayne a computer technician. Mostly I believe because they didn't know what else to write for the character. So they emulated my life. Not the most creative thing to do but it made for easy moving through the season.

Haywood Nelson - What's Happening Now!!

SitcomsOnline: Basically after What's Happening Now!! was over in 1988 you went back into the technology side and are continuing doing great stuff in this area on shows like Dr. Oz Show. Do you keep in touch with the cast these days like Ernest Thomas and Danielle Spencer? It's truly a shame that we lost Fred Berry (next year will be ten years already), Shirley Hemphill and Mabel King all within a few years (1999-2003) of each other. Did you keep in touch with them and can you describe some recent moments you had with them? And finally, would you ever consider doing a sitcom again and do you have some favorite sitcoms that are airing today?
Haywood Nelson: When What's Happening Now!! completed its syndication run I jumped fast into film production camera assisting. That led to screenwriting, and Film Distribution International. Today it's the same, I am a lighting tech, stagehand in general For Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and The Dr. Oz Show. Additionally I am a founding partner in two companies. One as an Executive Producer/Writer for television show creation, and the other as a Creative Executive for a start-up gaming company with a mobile consumer services application.
I'd describe my relationship with the cast of What's Happening!! as a family. I miss Mabel, Shirley, and Fred regularly, and speak with Ernest and Danielle frequently. The three of us were at an autograph signing not so long ago and the fun never stops with us. It was antics and jokes as always. It's nice too to be enterprising together at these signings.
My experience on What's Happening!! was such a good experience that I would most certainly consider doing another show in the future. Perhaps appear on one of the shows we are executive producing at our company. Unfortunately my schedule doesn't allow for much television viewing beyond my research for a project.

We definitely appreciate Mr. Nelson for taking the time to give us an interview! He is a very nice man and we hope nothing but success for his future projects! Follow him on Twitter! That'll do it for this installment of "Seven Questions," stay tuned next time for another brand new interview!

Live Evening of Comedy 'Worst Audition Ever' Heads to New York; Remembering Frank Cady

Start spreading the news! The hilarious live evening of comedy Worst Audition Ever is headed to the Big Apple for a night of big laughs! After a successful year-long run in Hollywood (six versions and about a dozen shows), Worst Ever Productions is proud to present its first installment of the cult-hit evening of comedy Worst Audition Ever in New York City at Joe's Pub - produced by the talented creator Christine Lakin (Step by Step), the equally talented Alec Ledd (aka Alaa Khaled), along with Daniel A. Miles and Corri English. The ticket proceeds from this performance of Worst Audition Ever will be donated to The Actors Fund. Christine Lakin tells us, "New York was something we always wanted to do to represent actors from the other coast. I couldn't think of a better cause to conjoin with it than The Actors Fund. I'm also a board member of the Hollywood SAG-AFTRA so it seemed fitting." The night of laughs in New York is this Monday (June 18, 2012) at 9:30PM. More info is below but Christine tells us "doing it in New York is a totally different beast because the way people audition in New York is so different than the way people audition in Los Angeles. New York is primarily theater based and LA is very much a film and television world. The things people are asked to do in a musical theater audition can feel so outlandish to somebody who makes their living in film and television and I think that is what a lot of this crowd in NY is going to really impart with their stories."

Worst Audition Ever - Christine Lakin

So what is this show about? Forget the terrible auditions on reality competition shows like American Idol, this show has stories of true auditions from known artists and they are funnier without bashing anyone. Worst Audition Ever is an evening of comedy about a group of artists (actors, directors, dancers, etc.) telling their real stories about the all too familiar audition process. The format is simple - a blank stage with one microphone - making the shared stories truly intimate and personal. For anyone who has ever had an embarrassing moment "putting themselves out there" in the name of art, Worst Audition Ever presents a wry and candid evening of some of the most awkward moments in artistic vulnerability – because pain is best served funny and with cocktails. The show was conceived around a circle of friends drinking beer and telling war stories about their artistic lives. The darkly funny, off-the-wall material that ensued is what conceptualized the show. Some of LA's funniest comedians have graced the stage revealing their awful, hysterical tales. Painfully true, mutually hilarious and completely cathartic, Worst Audition Ever has built an underground following playing small clubs in Los Angeles and building a viral fan base since April 2011.

Worst Audition Ever - Danielle Fishel

Many celebrities have done the show in Hollywood over the past year including Danielle Fishell (Boy Meets World), James Denton (Desperate Housewives), Kelly Stables (The Exes), Matt Moy (2 Broke Girls), Autumn Reeser (ABC's upcoming Last Resort), Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm), and director Andy Fickman (You Again). The stories they share are hilarious and at the same time easy to listen to! Danielle Fishell shared her audition stories for the horror movie Cabin Fever and the soap The Bold and the Beautiful--on the same day and two genres she requested never to do! Kelly Stables shared a comical story about an audition on the short-lived sitcom Cavemen where she had to play... a cave boy! And director Andy Fickman shared stories of auditions he witnessed including a mom filling in for a sick eight year-old for the part of an eight year-old...gotta love stage moms. Priceless fun!

Worst Audition Ever - Alex Ledd

Future plans are already underway for the show, as Christine tells us, "we are currently developing a TV pilot around the idea. And I would ultimately like to do two big shows a year in LA and two in NY. If people want us to come somewhere and put on a show, we're very open to that." The possibilities and laughter are endless for Worst Ever Productions! But for now, don't miss out seeing the show in person. As mentioned earlier, if you're in the New York metro area, your chance to see this entertaining and comical show is this coming Monday (June 18) at 9:30PM (doors open at 9) at Joe's Pub at 425 Lafayette Street near Astor Place. The New York show will have a New York/theater feel to it with the show being hosted by Daniel Reichard (Jersey Boys original cast, The Midtown Men). Christine says, "theater, as any actors knows is probably one of the most brutal industry in some way--it's physically demanding, it's over and over every night, it's relentless, but people do it because they really really love it." And reciting their worst auditions ever for the NY themed show will be: Tyler Maynard (Altar Boyz, Little Mermaid), Kevin Duda (The Book of Mormon, Les Liaisons Dangereuses), Jena Friedman (writer for Late Night With David Letterman), Jenna Leigh Green (Wicked, For the Record: Baz Luhrman), John West (The Drowsy Chaperone, Newsical the Musical), Cheryl Stern (La Cage Aux Folles, Candide). Directing for the evening will be Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages, Surf the Musical). As a preview to this evening in NY, Christine says, "there is a story this time around for an actress who did a part for over a year and then was asked to re-audition...for her part! This was a part she did for many many performances on Broadway, and then was asked to re-audition and then didn't get it. It's so unfathomable that you can't even believe people go through that kind of pain, which is why we have to laugh at it." It's certainly going to be a night of New York style fun, so come out and watch! I think for those who have seen the show in LA, know it is really cool and they wouldn't want to miss any show!

Worst Audition Ever

Our Seven Questions Interview with Christine Lakin from August, 2011

Moving on, Todd has a look back at the career of Frank Cady.

Frank Cady

Frank Cady, a character actor best known for his role as storekeeper Sam Drucker on Petticoat Junction, Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies, has died. Cady died on June 8 at his home in Wilsonville, OR. No information on cause of death has been provided. Mr. Cady was 96.

Cady's acting career in Hollywood began with appearances in plays in Los Angeles. This led to movie roles in D.O.A., Father of the Bride, The Ashphalt Jungle, When Worlds Collide, Ace in the Hole (aka The Big Carnival), Rear Window, The Bad Seed and 7 Faces of Dr. Lao. Some of his early sitcom appearances included Life with Luigi, December Bride, Private Secretary and The Gale Storm Show. In 1960, he played the town drunk in an episode of Make Room for Daddy that served as the pilot episode of The Andy Griffith Show. Cady played the role of neighbor Doc Williams on The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet in 60 episodes over 12 years.

His best known role was as general-store owner Sam Drucker on Petticoat Junction, Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies. He became the only actor to play a recurring character on three television sitcoms at the same time when he did it in 1968-69. Cady first appeared as Sam Drucker on Petticoat Junction in 1963. He was on the show for the entire 7 season run and appeared in approximately 166 of the sitcom's 222 episodes. In 1965, he began appearing on Green Acres. During the 6 season run of the show, he appeared in 142 or more episodes. His final acting appearance was in the 1990 television movie Return to Green Acres. Cady made 10 appearances on The Beverly Hillbillies in 1968-70. His character operated a bank in the later episodes of the series. Visit his IMDB page for a complete listing of his film and television credits.

Cady's wife, Shirley, died on August 22, 2008, at age 91. They had been married 68 years. He is survived by two children — daughter, Catherine Turk; son, Steven Cady; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His Sam Drucker character was so friendly and beloved. He has said that he was playing himself, so it seemed like he was a wonderful and genuinely nice man. In addition to his lengthy acting career, he earned a degree from Stanford University and served in the military in World War II. Mr. Cady lived a long and productive life. He will be deeply missed.

As we reported last week, Green Acres is coming to MeTV starting next week. They will air it Wednesdays at 9:00pm & 9:30pm as part of Hillbillies & Hooterville Wednesdays and on Saturdays at 6:00pm & 6:30pm. MeTV already airs The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction, so they have all three of his series covered. They have been paying tribute this week with episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction featuring his Sam Drucker character.

What are your favorite Frank Cady memories? Discuss them on our message board.
