Splitting Up Together - Tuesdays at 9:30PM ET/PT on ABC

Lena and Martin were once madly in love. But, like many marriages, time and circumstance eventually took their toll and the romance disappeared. Finding themselves in a platonic marriage and acting more like a pair of camp counselors wrangling their kids than a couple hopelessly in love, they decide that everyone's lives would be better served if they got a divorce. Still wanting the best for their three kids and facing a daunting real estate market, the couple decides to "Bird Nest" instead. One parent will live in the house as the "on-duty" parent taking care of the kids, while the "off-duty" parent will live in the detached garage, doing whatever he or she pleases while switching off every other week. Could being apart ultimately lead to them getting back together?

Jenna Fischer (Lena) is best known for her role as Pam Beesly on the long-running NBC sitcom The Office. She has also appeared in films such as Blades of Glory, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Hall Pass.

Oliver Hudson (Martin) is an actor known for his role on the TV series Scream Queens, Nashville, and the long-running sitcom Rules of Engagement. He is also the brother of actress Kate Hudson and son of Goldie Hawn.

Bobby Lee (Arthur) is a comedian and actor known for his long-running stint on the sketch comedy series MADtv, and for his role in films such as Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Pineapple Express and The Dictator.

Diane Farr (Maya) is an actress best known for her roles in the hit shows NUMB3RS and Rescue Me, as well as guest appearances on series such as Modern Family, Private Practice and CSI.

Lindsay Price (Camille) is an American actress previously known for her roles on soap operas, from daytime soaps such as All My Children and The Bold and the Beautiful to the primetime soaps such as Beverly Hills 90210, Lipstick Jungle and Eastwick.

Pilot Plot:

"Pilot" (Airs Tuesday, March 27 at 9:30PM ET)

After breaking the news to their friends and family about their divorce, Lena has to deal with her son Mason's growing pains. Meanwhile, Martin, still feeling guilty about refusing to dance with Lena at their wedding, secretly tries to atone for his oversight and surprise his ex-wife with new moves.

Analysis:

The most interesting thing about Splitting Up Together is the creators behind it. The show was created and is executive produced by Emily Kapnek, and also has Ellen DeGeneres credited as an executive producer. Kapnek previously created cult favorite ABC sitcoms Suburgatory and Selfie. Suburgatory started off as a promising hit with lots of positive buzz (and ratings), but gradually faded and was quietly canceled after its third season. Selfie only lasted for half of a season, but it garnered a following in that short time and remains a popular brilliant but cancelled: cult hit. What's notable about both shows, though, is that they were able to garner followings based on their lovable, quirky characters and gradual yet effective warmth and ability to tug on the heartstrings. Both shows had big concepts (in the case of Suburgatory a suburban satire, in the case of Selfie a shallow millennial woman learning how to care about people), but quietly deconstructed those concepts to reveal the true human beings behind them. Splitting Up Together has a similarly big concept, and in these early episodes for review, it shows potential of moving past it and revealing the depths of its characters - but it doesn't quite get there yet.

Splitting Up Together's pilot episode is a little boring, frankly - it gets a lot of plot out of the way and is light on jokes, but clearly has the entire cast putting in their all. And the cast is very game for whatever comes their way, particularly Jenna Fischer, whose first major sitcom role since The Office finds her a lovable anchor of the series. Future episodes begin to allow her to have a little more fun, and as expected, she handles it with aplomb. If I have one major concern with the series, it's that these early episodes are clearly laying a path to get its central couple back together, and the show is far more interesting examining why their marriage doesn't work than when it's suggesting that they should get back together. It would be incredibly generic and predictable for this to turn into another "will they/won't they" series, and I hope the glimmers of something more interesting is the direction the series goes down in the future.

Final Thoughts:

Splitting Up Together has an excellent cast and team of creators behind it, and there is potential for it to live up to the name of those involved in its early episodes, even if much of the show's early goings are a bit bland and predictable. Hopefully, the show will follow Emily Kapnek's former ABC sitcoms and begin leaning into its more interesting, character-building side and utilize all of its talent to their best of their abilities.

CBS has given full season orders to Monday night second year comedies Man with a Plan and Superior Donuts. Both series will go from 13 episodes to 22 episodes. Man with a Plan stars Matt LeBlanc, Liza Snyder, Kevin Nealon, Stacy Keach, Grace Kaufman, Matthew McCann, Hala Finley and Matt Cook. Jeff and Jackie Filgo, Matt LeBlanc, Michael Rotenberg, Troy Zien and Gregg Mettler are executive producers for CBS Television Studios. Superior Donuts stars Judd Hirsch, Jermaine Fowler, Katey Sagal, David Koechner, Maz Jobrani, Rell Battle and Diane Guerrero. Bob Daily, Neil Goldman, Garrett Donovan, Mark Teitelbaum, John R. Montgomery, Michael Rotenberg, Josh Lieberman, Jermaine Fowler and Betsy Thomas are executive producers for CBS Television Studios.

Nicollette Sheridan (Desperate Housewives, Knots Landing) has been cast as Alexis Carrington in Dynasty on The CW. Alexis Carrington is the first wife of Blake Carrington and mother to Fallon and Steven. She will return unexpectedly to their world, challenging Blake's marriage to Cristal, seeking to reunite with her children, and fighting to claim what is hers.

Dynasty airs Wednesdays, 9:00-10:00pm ET/PT on The CW. Wealth, power, deception, and double-dealing... what does it take to build a dynasty? A modern re-imagining of the iconic primetime soap, centering on the powerful Carrington family as they defend their throne against the Colbys, new rivals and threats, and even each other. Big Mouth is coming...season 2 lands exclusively on Netflix in 2018! Big Mouth is a 10-episode, half-hour edgy adult animated comedy from real-life best friends Nick Kroll (Kroll Show, The League) and Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy) about the glorious nightmare that is teenaged puberty. Comedian John Mulaney lends his voice to the character of Andrew, while Kroll (who serves as co-creator, executive producer) voices many including best friend Nick. Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Jenny Slate and Jessi Klein are among those who lend their voice to the series. Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg and screenwriter-directors Mark Levin & Jennifer Flackett are all creators and executive producers on the series. Big Mouth is a Netflix production. Whether you have Bette Davis eyes or the eye of the tiger, get ready to party all night long (all night) as Pop takes its comedy cue from the '80s with their newest series Let's Get Physical, a modern-day story set in the high-octane world of aerobics. From Pop and Entertainment One (eOne), the series heads into production this September. Paying homage to the decade that introduced America to scrunchies, leg warmers and Footloose, the scripted television comedy stars Matt Jones, Chris Diamantopoulos and AnnaLynne McCord. Let's Get Physical centers on a slacker named Joe who, with every breath he takes, makes a reluctant comeback in the fitness industry after his dad, Colonel Tom Force, a.k.a. "The Godfather of Aerobics," unexpectedly passes away and wills his son the broken-down family gym. In a "Brewster's Millions"-type switch to receive the family fortune and estate, Joe must take on his arch-nemesis, who has become a highly successful fitness entrepreneur. Against all odds, they face off in the ultimate battle of masculinity... The National Aerobics Championships. Might as well jump, right? More news on the series will be coming soon, including a premiere date.

CBS has announced that Diane Guerrero has joined the cast of Superior Donuts as a series regular. She will be introduced in the second season premiere on Monday, Oct. 30 (9:30-10:00 PM, ET/PT). Guerrero will play Sofia, a young Uptown gentrifier who parks her food truck, which serves healthy, socially conscious breakfast foods, in front of Arthur's old-school donut shop. Though Arthur assumes she's an entitled millennial, she's actually a hard-working, enterprising, self-made woman who has poured every penny into her food truck business, which she plans to turn into an empire.

Guerrero is best known for playing Maritza Ramos on the series Orange Is the New Black, for which she has won three Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, as well as her role as Lina on Jane the Virgin. In 2016 Guerrero released the memoir In the Country We Love: My Family Divided, which recounts her personal story of the real plight of undocumented immigrants in this country.

These days, sitcoms kind of come in all different shapes and sizes. If you're a sitcom traditionalist, preferring classical multi-camera set up with plenty of silly hijinks and audience laughter, there are plenty of shows for you that still exist - from network comedies like The Big Bang Theory and Kevin Can Wait to "reboots" of classic sitcoms on Netflix such as Fuller House and One Day at a Time. There are also still plenty of smart, slick, modern single-camera sitcoms with in the vein of The Office and Modern Family - some of my favorite contemporary examples include NBC's Superstore and Fox's Brooklyn Nine-Nine. But with the rise of streaming and "peak TV" has come with it a new type of sitcom. These sitcoms follow the sitcom mold - they're about 20-30 minutes long, are filled with jokes and lovable characters, and generally tell stories on an episode-by-episode basis. But they're also a little more complex than your average sitcom, are more comfortable telling serialized stories along with their episode-by-episode story lines, and aren't as constructed to the network-mandated act structure of a network (or even cable) sitcom. They're sitcoms designed for streaming services - essentially, they're sitcoms tailor-made for a new age.

Two of these streaming sitcoms - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Master of None, both Netflix originals - released new seasons this past few weeks. And both of these seasons featured plenty of examples of why both have become buzzed about and beloved cultural hits. Master of None featured two episodes in its season that may wind up being my two favorite episodes of television of this entire year - "New York, I Love You" (a series of disconnected vignettes about peripheral characters on the outskirts of its protagonist Dev's New York life) and "Thanksgiving" (a coming out story of Dev's best friend Denise that's perhaps the most raw and honest coming out story I've ever seen on TV.) These two episodes feature very little of Master of None's protagonist and have nothing to do with the show's central premise or storyline – they’re entirely experimental. And yet, they're some of the most fascinating and refreshing TV you'll find right now. Similarly, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's third season has some of the best joke writing you could possibly find, and there were several moments where I had to pause my TV because I was laughing so hard. What's even more impressive is the way the show weaves some very dark subject matter between these jokes, revolving around the horrors of Kimmy's past, which she spent being held captive by a madman who convinced her the world had ended. Kimmy started out as a network sitcom (the first season was written for NBC before they sold it to Netflix), but the show's Netflix home has allowed it to gradually uncover the horror of Kimmy's past while still keeping its joke-a-second pace rolling.

Still, while the freedom of Netflix allows these shows to flourish in many ways, there are also some ways where I feel these sitcoms could actually benefit from some of the tightness of network programming. The second season of Master of None spends a large amount of its time on a humdrum romance arc between Dev and a woman he meets in Italy named Francesca, cultivating in an episode that's 45 minutes long and entirely devoted to their relationship. The story is never as interesting as the show thinks it is, and I have to wonder if perhaps some creative restraints may have guided Ansari to either developing the story better or at least shortening it in places (like, maybe a 25 minute episode instead of 45 minutes?). Similarly, there are parts of Kimmy Schmidt's third season that feel like total misfires, particularly in the show's largely unfunny satire of college students that never quite finds its target. And yet, without any real network notes or ability for audience response to influence creative direction, the shows keep going with plotlines and beats that clearly aren't working. I wouldn't want Master of None or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to be network sitcoms, as I wouldn't want to lose their heir of experimentation, even if it means they sometimes lack consistency. But they're also signs that the traditional method of doing television may not be completely dead yet.

CBS has announced Fall 2017 primetime premiere dates. Premiere week opens with The Big Bang Theory at 8:00 PM, leading into the Special Series Premiere of Young Sheldon at 8:30 PM, and the New Comedy Me, Myself & I at 9:30 PM, on Monday, Sept. 25. New Drama SEAL Team joins Survivor and Criminal Minds when they premiere Wednesday, Sept. 27. Wisdom of the Crowd debuts Sunday, Oct. 1 at approx. 8:30 (after NFL), followed by the Season Premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles at approx. 9:30 PM. On Monday, Oct. 2, New Comedy 9JKL premieres at 8:30 PM, following The Big Bang Theory. CBS' Thursday Night Entertainment Lineup returns following the conclusion of Thursday Night Football on Nov. 2 with The Big Bang Theory at 8:00 PM, New Comedy Young Sheldon at 8:30 PM, Mom at 9:00 PM, Life in Pieces at 9:30 PM and New Drama S.W.A.T. at 10:00 PM. CBS announced early renewals of 18 returning series for the 2017-2018 season (well, 16 actually since two were already previously announced). Additional returning series pick-ups for next season will be announced at a later date. The shows renewed to date include 6 comedies, 9 dramas, 1 reality series, 2 newsmagazines and a roster of hit programs across every night of the week. The Big Bang Theory and NCIS were already renewed earlier. The 16 series new pick-ups for 2017-18 season are NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Bull, Kevin Can Wait, Blue Bloods, Hawaii Five-0, Scorpion, Survivor, Life in Pieces, Madam Secretary, MacGyver, Mom, Man with a Place, Superior Donuts, 48 Hours, and 60 Minutes. These renewals includes 5 freshman shows are part of the Network's early renewals, including Bull, Kevin Can Wait, MacGyver, Man with a Plan and Superior Donuts.

There were no news on series such as 2 Broke Girls, Criminal Minds, The Great Indoors, Pure Genius, The Odd Couple, Training Day, Code Black, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Elementary and The Amazing Race. A few of those will get renewed, but no word yet. So stay tuned!

Superior Donuts is a comedy about the owner of a small donut shop that's located in a quickly gentrifying Chicago neighborhood. Arthur is a gruff, to-the-point Chicagoan who refuses to sell newfangled cronuts and macchiatos or renovate his dated shop that hasn't changed since it opened in 1969. That all changes when enterprising go-getter Franco fast-talks his way into Arthur's life as his new (and only) employee, and convinces him that he can bring the shop – and Arthur – into the 21st century. Arthur's supportive regulars include loyal patron Randy, a cop whose late father was Arthur's best friend; her overeager rookie partner, James; Tush, a colorful customer who uses the shop counter as a makeshift office, where he keeps tabs on a variety of odd jobs via fax machine; Maya, a privileged grad-school student working on her Ph. D; and Sweatpants, Franco's longtime friend who's willing to dress as a donut to help drum up more business. Looking to cash in on the urban renewal is Arthur's over-caffeinated neighbor, aspiring real estate capitalist Fawz, who pushes Arthur on a daily basis to sell the building to him. With his business in jeopardy, Arthur grudgingly realizes that he had better embrace the change around him and that Franco could be exactly what he – and the donut shop – need to thrive.

Judd Hirsch (Arthur) is best known to television audiences for his Emmy-winning role as Alex Rieger in Taxi. He won a Golden Globe for his role as John Lacey in Dear John. In 1997-1998, he co-starred with Bob Newhart in George & Leo. He played Alan Eppes for six seasons in the CBS drama Numbers.

Jermaine Fowler (Franco) is a stand-up comedian who co-created and starred in the truTV sketch-comedy series Friends of the People. His voice credits include BoJack Horesman and Robot Chicken. He will recur in the HBO comedy Crashing.

Katey Sagal (Randy) is best known for her role as the outrageous Peg Bundy in the groundbreaking, long-running series Married with Children, for which she earned three Golden Globe and two American Comedy Award nominations. She co-starred with the later John Ritter in 8 Simple Rules. She played Gemma Teller Morrow in the FX drama Sons of Anarchy.

David Koechner (Carl "Tush") is best known for his roles as Todd Packer in The Office and as Champ Kind in the Anchorman films. His other current roles include Another Period as Commodore Bellacourt and The Goldbergs as Bill Lewis.

Maz Jobrani (Fawz) starred as Gourishankar 'Gary' Subramaniam in The Knights of Prosperity and as Dr. Bhama in Better Off Ted. Some of his other credits include Life on a Stick, Rita Rocks, We Are Men and The Detour.

Anna Baryshnikov (Maya) has guest starred in The Mysteries of Laura, Doll & Em, Blue Bloods and Good Girls Revolt. Her breakout role was as Sandy in the 2016 film Manchester by the Sea.

Darien Sills-Evans (James) played Darien Hall in the sitcom Cosby. He has had recurring roles in Third Watch, Person of Interest and Treme. He has guest starred in Blue Bloods, Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU.

Rell Battle (Sweatpants) is a stand-up comedian who is the creator and an executive producer of Roast Battle, an energetic live show that was subsequently adapted as a television series for Comedy Central. He has guest starred in Outlands and Key and Peele.

Analysis:

Superior Donuts is a multi-camera sitcom produced by CBS Television Studios and 3 Arts Entertainment. Bob Daily, Neil Goldman, Garrett Donovan, Mark Teitelbaum, John Montgomery, Michael Rotenberg, Josh Lieberman and Jermaine Fowler serve as executive producers. The series is based on the play by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning writer Tracy Lett.

In the "Pilot" episode, Arthur greets Randy and asks her about her new partner, James. James asks if he has any cronuts, but Randy tells him he sells only donuts. Grad-school student Maya then talks to Arthur. Franco walks in and tells him he's interested in a job. Franco gives him some ideas for improving the business. Fawz offers to buy Arthur's store, but Arthur wants nothing to do with it. Franco wants to bring the business into the 20th century. When Arthur corrects him to the 21st century, Franco tells him "no, I don't." Carl asks Arthur if he is being robbed by Franco. A Starbucks open up across the street, so Franco has an idea of having his friend Sweatpants dress in a donut costume and pass out flyers. Some customers walk in after reading Yelp reviews and ask for soy-based donuts and fancy drinks. After Franco's ideas don't work, Arthur considers selling to Fawz. Somebody does some graffiti on the Starbucks sign. Randy brings in a brown backpack, which belongs to Franco. They try to take Franco in for questioning before somebody covers the damages for him.

Overall, these episodes were very funny and enjoyable. The legendary James Burrows directs the first three episodes. The "Pilot" episode is fast-paced with the jokes flying fast and furious. Many of the jokes are race related, but they are light-hearted. There are also many older vs. younger generation type jokes, so the show should appeal to many demographics. We are introduced to the regular shop patrons. The second and third episodes feature the regulars interacting more. All of the scenes in the first two episodes are at the main shop set, with a couple scenes in the kitchen or outside the store. It's set up like a stage play. The show is set in Chicago. Carl ("Tush") is shown wearing some Cubs t-shirts and Franco is shown wearing the glorious Blackhawks red jersey, the best jersey in all of professional sports, in an upcoming episode. It would be nice to see them at real Chicago locations in future episodes.

Sitcom veterans and television newcomers form a talented cast. Judd Hirsch has starred in several sitcoms earlier in his career, but this is his first regular sitcom role since George & Leo in 1998. Jermaine Fowler is a fresh face who will probably be new to most viewers. He should have a promising future with his comedy skills. The regular shop patrons include Katey Sagal, David Koechner, Maz Jobrani and Darien Sills-Evans. They bring plenty of comedic experience. Newcomers Anna Baryshnikov and Rell Battle fit in well with the cast. The cast just seems to have some good chemistry and working together early on in the first three episodes.

Conclusion:

Superior Donuts is a promising new sitcom with a strong cast and plenty of fresh and funny jokes. The pairing of a comedy legend like Judd Hirsch with a rising young star in Jermaine Fowler is a good one. It's been some years since Judd Hirsch has appeared in a starring role in a sitcom, so it will be nice to see him on a weekly basis. Jermaine Fowler is new to me. He reminds me a little of a young Kevin Hart. He brings a lot of charisma to the character. Fowler is also an executive producer of the series, so he has a lot on his plate. Katey Sagal also makes a welcome return to a sitcom role. The rest of the supporting cast is filled with solid comedy veterans in David Koechner, Maz Jobrani and Darien Sills-Evans with the younger cast members in Anna Baryshnikov and Rell Battle. The series reminds me of 2 Broke Girls with the food theme, Mike & Molly because of the police officers and Cheers because of the regular shop patrons. Chicago is my kind of town, and this is the kind of throwback multi-camera sitcom which I enjoy.

CBS has ordered a baker's dozen amount of episodes of Superior Donuts. It will premiere with a special taste preview after a new episode of The Big Bang Theory. They should receive a nice sampling of viewers. It will then move to its regular time slot on Mondays where it will be sandwiched between Man with a Plan and 2 Broke Girls. Superior Donuts has some good potential. It's one of their stronger efforts this season. It may take a little time for things to completely gel, but there are some good old-fashioned laughs here. Go nuts for Superior Donuts on Thursday night before it moves to its regular time slot on Mondays at 9:00PM ET/PT.

Frozen yogurts for everyone! NBC's The Good Place, the critically beloved otherworldly comedy from executive producer and creator Michael Schur, has been renewed for a full-season order of 13 episodes. The show's Jan. 19 first season finale delivered 5.2 million viewers after three days of time-shifted and video-on-demand viewing, for the show's biggest L+3 audience since Oct. 27. The series follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell, House of Lies, Veronica Mars), an ordinary woman who, through an extraordinary string of events, enters the afterlife where she comes to realize that she hasn't been a very good person. Netflix announced the premiere date for Fuller House Season 2 which launches globally December 9, 2016 on Netflix, along with the debut of the new key art (seen above). In the spinoff series, Fuller House, the adventures that began in 1987 on Full House continue, with veterinarian D.J. Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron-Bure) recently widowed and living in San Francisco. D.J.'s younger sister/aspiring musician Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) and D.J.'s lifelong best friend/fellow single mother Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber), along with Kimmy's feisty teenage daughter Ramona, all move in to help take care of D.J.'s three boys - the rebellious 12-year-old Jackson, neurotic 7-year-old Max and her newborn baby, Tommy Jr. Fuller House stars Candace Cameron Bure as D.J. The CBS Television Network has given a series order to Superior Donuts, a new half hour multi-camera comedy from CBS Television Studios. The Network has ordered 12 additional episodes plus the pilot episode for broadcast during the 2016/17 season. Starring Judd Hirsch and Jermaine Fowler, Superior Donuts follows the relationship between the gruff owner (Hirsch) of a small donut shop, his enterprising new young employee (Fowler) and their loyal patrons, in a quickly gentrifying Chicago neighborhood. Based on the play by Tracy Letts, the comedy also stars David Koechner, Maz Jobrani, Anna Baryshnikov, Darien Sills-Evans, Rell Battle and Katey Sagal.
