40th Annual TCA Awards Nominees; E! Gets Comedic Denise Richards Docuseries

The Television Critics Association (TCA) announced the nominees for the organization's landmark 40th Annual TCA Awards, putting the spotlight on the best performances, series, creators, and stars from the 2023-2024 TV season. The TCA is a non-profit organization of more than 230 professional television journalists from the U.S. and Canada. They made their nominations based on programming available on broadcast, cable, and streaming outlets. Winners will be announced at an exclusive ceremony held in-person at The Langham Huntington in Pasadena on Friday, July 12. This year saw a tie for the top spot, FX and Netflix lead all competitors with 16 nominations each, dominating the Program of the Year category with three nominations for FX and two for Netflix. HBO | Max is in second place with 13 nominations, followed by Disney+ with six; while ABC, PBS/PBS KIDS, and Prime Video are tied with three. Rounding out the list is Apple TV+, NBC, and Peacock with two each; and Adult Swim, Bravo, CBS, Comedy Central, ID, Nat Geo, and Showtime with one apiece.
On the series front, freshman favorites led the charge, as FX and Netflix once again split top honors with a TCA-best five nominations for first-year standouts Shōgun, Baby Reindeer and Ripley. The trio will face off throughout the night and across some of the TCA's premier categories, including Program of the Year - going up against FX entries The Bear and Reservation Dogs and HBO | Max's Hacks - Outstanding Achievement in Drama, Outstanding New Program, and Individual Achievement In Drama, pitting Shōgun stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai against the talented Mr. Ripley himself, Andrew Scott, and the object of Baby Reindeer's obsession, Richard Gadd, as well as Juno Temple (Fargo), and Academy Award(R) winner Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country).
Elsewhere, past winners Quinta Brunson and Jean Smart seek to reclaim Individual Achievement In Comedy gold once more, going up against Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Devery Jacobs; The Bear aims to send the competition back into hibernation to nab its second-consecutive Outstanding Achievement in Comedy award; late-night heavyweights Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver, and Seth Meyers duke it out in Outstanding Achievement in Variety, Talk or Sketch; We're Here and Conan Must Go hit the road in Outstanding Achievement in Reality; and it's the ultimate comic book showdown as DC's Superman battles Marvel's X-Men in Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming, among others.
E! has greenlit Denise Richards and the Wild Things (wt), a half-hour comedic docuseries starring and executive produced by Denise Richards. The series will premiere in 2025. The first time Richards opened up her family life for a reality series more than 15 years ago she was navigating a notoriously difficult marriage, intense scrutiny and tabloid attention all while raising two young girls. This time around, life is more complicated and unpredictable. Richards and her family, which include daughters Sami, Lola and Eloise, and husband Aaron, test each other's boundaries and show us what their famous, loving and controversial life is like.

WGN America Fall 2013 Schedule; TCA Summer 2013 Press Tour: ABC; 2013 TCA Awards Winners
It's a new week and our second week of looking at the fall 2013 schedules for cable TV and digital TV. Today we will take a look at WGN America's fall 2013 schedule. The newest addition to its schedule will be the off-network debut of Parks & Recreation. We announced already that the comedy was coming, but now we have the airtimes! Parks & Recreation will air in primetime on Monday nights at 9:00pm & 9:30pm and also Mon-Sat nights at 12:30am & 1:00am to add to WGN America's late night comedy block. There will be no other new additions to the schedule, but most of the other comedies will remain including How I Met Your Mother, Rules of Engagement, 30 Rock, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Futurama, 'Til Death and Dharma & Greg - all airing after 11pm. Two series will be leaving the schedule, though. Scrubs and The New Adventures of Old Christine will depart, as Scrubs was a staple for many years. While the comedy airings are all in late night, some primetime blocks will remain from 8-10pm including How I Met Your Mother on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays; Rules of Engagement on Wednesdays, and now Parks & Recreation joins Mondays but 9-10pm only.
There will more drama airings of their older series as well, as Matlock, In the Heat of the Night and Walker Texas Ranger now will also air on Saturday mornings beginning at 11am. Their weekday airings remain untouched, but Walker will now just be twice on weekdays rather than three times, as Law & Order: Criminal Intent gets a second hour on weekdays. View the full WGN America Fall 2013 schedule beginning this September. Discuss what you think on that link as well!
ABC concluded the TCA summer 2013 press tour yesterday (well PBS still is left, but we are not covering PBS). Paul Lee, president, ABC Entertainment Group, announced the premiere dates for new midseason series Resurrection and The Quest, along with spring premiere dates for key returning series, now structured into split seasons to allow for fewer or no preemptions or repeats. New drama Resurrection will premiere on Sunday, March 9 at 10:00 pm ET (a week after the Oscars), taking over the timeslot for Betrayal when that show's season concludes. New alternative series The Quest will debut on Thursday, January 2 with a special two-hour premiere from 8:00-10:00 pm, ET, moving into the timeslot held by Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, following its winter finale. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland will return with its second half of its 13 episodes after The Quest finishes its run, but there is no announced date yet. Continuing the network's commitment to the split season strategy announced at this year's Upfront presentation, key returning series Grey's Anatomy, Nashville, Once Upon a Time, Revenge and Scandal will return in the spring, following their winter finales, with all new episodes that will run with few or no repeats to their season finales in May. The returning series' winter finale dates will be announced at a later time, but the spring returns have been announced with Nashville returning from its winter hiatus on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Grey's Anatomy and Scandal will return on Thursday, Feb. 27 and the ABC Sunday stapes Once Upon a Time and Revenge will return on Sunday, March 9 a week after the Oscars and leading into the new premiere of the aforementioned Resurrection.
ABC also announced their own "Shark Week." ABC's hit series Shark Tank, fresh from a TCA Award win for Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming and a 2013 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Reality Program, is eating up ABC's primetime schedule with a special "Shark Tank Week," beginning Sunday, September 8 at 8:00pm. "Shark Tank Week" will conclude on Friday, September 13 at 9:00 pm, gearing up for the Season 5 premiere the following week, on Friday, September 20 at 9:00pm ET on ABC. The Sharks thoughtfully fished out six episodes from the past four seasons. Night one will have Mark Cuban's favorite episode. Night two will have Lori Greiner's favorite episode. Tuesday will have Robert Herjavec's pick, while day four it is Barbara Corcoran turn. Day five will feature Daymond John's pick and the "Shark Tank Week" concludes wonderfully with Mr. Wonderful's (Kevin O'Leary) pick. Shark Tank became a ratings force this past season, regularly finishing as Friday night's No. 1 program on the major networks among Adults 18-49. In addition, the series grew 17% year over year to deliver its highest-rated season ever.
The panels for ABC started with the syndicated series Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, which now has Cedric the Entertainer hosting. A panel for the new comedy Trophy Wife followed. The executive session with Paul Lee was up next into the Once Upon a Time in Wonderland panel. Super Fun Night was the last panel before lunch, as then critics got to see a screening of the Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot during lunch! Then it was back to more panels, with upcoming Sunday drama Betrayal leading it off. Throwback comedy The Goldbergs was next in all of its 1980's glory. Another new Tuesday series was next with Lucky 7 holding its panel. New ABC Comedy Wednesday comedy Back in the Game followed leading into the highly anticipated panel for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. And finally the night concluded with the All-Star Cocktail Reception.
Finally, The Television Critics Association (TCA) has announced the winners for its 2013 TCA Awards. Summer Week 9 Sitcom Ratings; New Sitcoms On Cable This Week; 2012 TCA Awards Winners
Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for week of July 16-22)
- The Simpsons (Fox) - A special repeat at 7pm did 1.96 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, as it was preempted from 8-9pm.
- The Cleveland Show (Fox) - preempted.
- Bob's Burgers (Fox) - preempted.
- Family Guy (Fox) - A special repeat at 7:30pm did 2.56 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, obviously lower than usual since it didn't air in its normal 9-10pm summer slots.
- American Dad! (Fox) - preempted.
- How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - A repeat did 3.98 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. Finally stopped the up or down trend.
- 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - A repeat of this comedy did 4.57 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week.
- Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat did 5.8 million and only a 1.6 18-49 rating, up four tenths from previous week. Its best showing in the time period in many weeks.
- Mike & Molly (CBS) - 5.19 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating for a repeat was up two tenths from previous week.
- The Middle (ABC) - Tuesday repeats will air for the rest of the summer, in addition to its regular Wednesday airings. The first Tuesday airing did 3.39 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, on par with its normal Wednesday summer repeats.
- Last Man Standing (ABC) - A repeat of this sitcom followed with 2.51 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. Could have been a bit higher.
- New Girl (Fox) - preempted.
- The Middle (ABC) - A repeat at 8 did 3.66 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week again.
- Suburgatory (ABC) - A repeat at 8:30 posted 3.01 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, on par week-to-week. The comedy will be moving to 9:30pm this Fall.
- Up All Night (NBC) - preempted.
- Modern Family (ABC) 2 airings - A repeat did 3.75 million and a 1.3 rating, down a tenth from previous week. Solid. A second airing followed with a similar 4.07 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. Good showings.
- Happy Endings (ABC) - preempted.
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A repeat at 8 did 7.88 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, down three tenths (and a million total viewers) from the previous week. Still good, but down.
- Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat at 8:30pm did a solid 6.64 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, thanks to a solid lead-in, but down two tenths week-to-week.
- The Office (NBC) - A repeat at 8 did 2.25 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, which is not good but again on par with previous week.
- Parks and Recreation (NBC) - A repeat of this followed at 8:30pm and did only 1.52 million and a 0.5 18-49 rating, down a tenth week-to-week. No rewatchability.
- New Girl (Fox) - preempted.
- Whitney (NBC) - preempted, Olympics time.
- Community (NBC) - preempted, Olympics time.
- Rules of Engagement (CBS) - preempted.
Summing it up. Repeats of The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Two and a Half Men-Mon & Thurs were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as repeats of 2 Broke Girls, How I Met Your Mother) or just plain old terrible (such as repeats of Parks & Recreation, Last Man Standing).
Feeling the repeat blues? Look for original sitcoms on cable this summer, with ABC Family's sophomore season of Melissa & Joey at 8pm all-new this Wednesday. What an underrated family comedy it is. New comedy Baby Daddy starring Chelsea Kane airs at 8:30pm with episode 6. TBS has week three of new sitcom Sullivan & Son this Thursday at 10pm. It's Cheers meets Sanford & Son, if that makes sense. Also on Wednesdays is TV Land's Hot in Cleveland spin-off series The Soul Man starring Cedric the Entertainer at 10pm followed by new episodes of The Exes at 10:30pm. TV Land has moved Retired at 35 to Wednesdays and is airing at 11pm. FX and Charlie Sheen come together in Anger Management airing Thursdays at 9:30pm. Even on digital TV, Bounce TV airs new comedy Family Time starring Omar Gooding, but it had its season finale on July 23...look for repeats on Bounce TV. All of these are multi-camera comedies, too! New sitcom airings is the perfect way to beat the summer blues!

We are nearing the end of the summer 2008 TCA press tour. NBC has the final two days including today. Today NBC will mainly showcase its cable networks while NBC itself will go tomorrow. NBC did have a few announcements to make today, however. Tuesday is a TCA set day visit, so nothing really will be covered then.
Up at the panel today were after lunch were Friday Night Lights (NBC/DirecTV), Tabatha's Salon Takeover (Bravo, The Real Housewives of Atlanta (Bravo), Coolio's Rules (Bravo), qubo TV shows, then The Starter Wife (USA Network), Sanctuary (Sci Fi), Caprica (Sci Fi), and then closing it out were SNL (NBC) and America's Toughest Jobs (NBC).
NBC's popular game show Deal or No Deal and the all-new extreme reality competition series America's Toughest Jobs will premiere with four special Monday night episodes beginning August 25. Deal or No Deal will return with the exciting Million Dollar Mission from 8-9 p.m. (ET), and America's Toughest Jobs will air from 9-10 p.m. (ET) before moving to Fridays at 8 p.m. ET beginning September 19. Deal will debut its Wednesday and Friday night episodes in October.
Saturday Night Live will make an early return this fall to capitalize on the hotly contested Presidential race, extending its traditional 20-episode season to 22, in its 34th season to premiere on Saturday, September 13. In addition, after making a splash this spring during the Democratic primaries, Saturday Night Live will return to the air with 10 new live broadcasts this fall with a Presidential Bash special prior to Election Day, Monday, November 3 (9:30-11 p.m. ET). Sci Fi's original movie franchise promises more action, thrills, cataclysmic disasters and mythological adventures in 2009 with an unprecedented 36 original action movies - up from 2008's slate of 24. The Channel's high-octane, entertaining original movies have made Sci Fi Saturday: The Most Dangerous Night of Television a destination for viewers, bringing in an average of 1.8 million viewers so far in 2008. In addition to the Saturday offerings, Sci Fi will also present its original movie fare on Sunday evenings beginning next year. Movies include Hellhounds (directed by Rick Schroeder), Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon starring Shannen Doherty, and Lake Placid 3, sequel to Sci Fi's original movie Lake Placid 2.
