SitcomsOnline Digest: Max Headroom Reboot in Works at AMC Networks; Jeopardy! to Continue Dual Host Plan

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we are hearing about a reboot of a short-lived (but much beloved) 80s TV series, we're learning of the long-term plans for hosts on Jeopardy!, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • A series reboot of Max Headroom, with the original star even, is in the works at AMC Networks. (Deadline)
  • It looks as if the current Jeopardy! hosting arrangement of two rotating hosts will be continuing indefinitely. (CNN)
  • In the old days, the idea of rebroadcasting a network sitcom was a thought that didn't come up until about the fourth season, but now, after just 13 episodes, Abbott Elementary rights have been sold to both HBO Max and Hulu. (Variety)
  • Chris Cuomo, who was once the star of the CNN primetime lineup, is headed to NewsNation this fall to host a nightly program. (Deadline)
  • We rarely talk about soap operas on here and never talk about Australian series at all, but it's kind of a big deal when an Australian soap opera that has been on since 1985 ends after 9000 episodes, which is what happened this week with Neighbours. (NY Times)
  • In the network's continuing strategy to cancel anything that costs money to produce, TBS has cancelled Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. (Deadline)
  • Hopefully, plans don't change for this, but it looks like TBS is actually going to try to air a new season of American Dad! starting on Labor Day. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (JULY 30 - AUGUST 5)

  • It's finally happening: Beavis and Butt-Head returns for new episodes on Paramount+ on Thursday.
  • You can ride along with Decades this weekend for a binge of Taxi.
  • FX has a new season of Reservation Dogs on Wednesday.

Mythic Quest

At a special Mythic Quest panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Apple TV+ and the cast and creators of hit workplace comedy series confirmed that the series will return this fall, and unveiled a first-look teaser at the highly anticipated third season. Mythic Quest co-creator, executive producer and star Rob McElhenney, co-creator and executive producer Megan Ganz, executive producer and star David Hornsby and stars Charlotte Nicdao, Danny Pudi, Ashly Burch, Imani Hakim, and Jessie Ennis came together for the conversation, moderated by Craig Mazin, and shared a glimpse into what fans can expect this upcoming season.

Mythic Quest follows a group of video game developers tasked with building worlds, molding heroes and creating legends, but the most hard-fought battles don't occur in the game - they happen in the office. In season three, as Ian and Poppy navigate the gaming world and their partnership at the newly formed GrimPop Studios, Dana is forced to play mediator to her bosses' incessant bickering. Back at Mythic Quest, David settles into his new role as the boss where he truly finds himself in charge for the first time with Jo returning as his assistant - more loyal and militant than ever; and Carol attempts to figure out where she fits in after a new promotion. At Berkeley, Rachel struggles to balance her morals with capitalism, while a post-prison Brad tries to return to society as a reformed man. Co-created by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Megan Ganz (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), the series stars McElhenney, Charlotte Nicdao, David Hornsby, who also executive produces, Danny Pudi, Ashly Burch, Imani Hakim, Jessie Ennis and Naomi Ekperigin.

American Dad! Returns Labor Day on TBS; Krapopolis Gets Special Nov. 27 Preview on Fox

American Dad!

At San Diego Comic Con, TBS announced the return of new episodes from season 17 of American Dad! on Monday, September 5 at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT. American Dad! centers on super patriotic CIA agent Stan Smith (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) and the misadventures of his unconventional family in Langley Falls, VA. Stan applies the same drastic measures used in his job at the CIA to his home life, where Stan's blissfully unaware wife, Francine (Wendy Schaal), has an unfaltering loyalty that makes her blind to his unabashed arrogance. His left-wing activist daughter Hayley (Rachael MacFarlane), however, doesn’t let him off so easily and knows just how to push her father's buttons, unlike her dopey, well-intentioned husband Jeff (Jeff Fischer) who doesn't know much of anything. Son Steve (Scott Grimes) is a geeky-yet-confident kid who spends his time playing video games and obsessing about the opposite sex. The Smith cabinet is rounded out by two rather unconventional members: Roger (MacFarlane), a sassy, sarcastic and routinely inappropriate space alien, and Klaus (Dee Bradley Baker), an attention-starved goldfish with the brain of a German Olympic skier.

This season also features a special guest lineup including Terry Crews as Heinrich Brown, a ruthless insurance adjuster hellbent on bringing bad drivers to justice but trapped behind the façade of his macho exterior is a tender man with a song in his heart; Jared Harris as Merlin, a busy, always on-the-go, multi-hyphenate, wizard. Even though he's the most powerful being in his realm, Merlin still relies on a team of employees to help juggle his numerous projects and appearances; Laurie Metcalf as Eilzabeth, a leading egg scientist and researcher at Groff Community College; Jason Isaacs as Jumpers, the leader of a manipulative gang of frogs – he’s as evil as he is charming, and he'll stop at nothing to make sure he gets what he wants; and Patti Harrison as Ali, a really cool sophomore girl who pops ghost peppers like they’re nothing, and thinks love doesn’t exist. Steve can’t resist her.

Krapapolis

Announced at San Diego Comic Con, fans can catch a special preview episode of upcoming animated comedy Krapopolis on Sunday, November 27, 2022 on Fox, ahead of its 2023 premiere! Also, be sure to stop by Krapopolis.com for the ultimate fan experience with access to Krapopolis' burgeoning digital ancient civilization. Grab your exclusive Krap Chicken NFT while they are still available and enter for a chance to win a trip to Greece!

Highly anticipated new animated series from Dan Harmon (co-creator of Rick and Morty), Krapopolis centers on a flawed family of humans, gods and monsters that tries to run one of the world's first cities without killing each other. In the series, Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd), voices "Tyrannis", the mortal son of a goddess. He's the benevolent King of Krapopolis trying to make do in a city that lives up to its name. Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), plays "Deliria," Tyrannis' mother, goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices. Within her extended Olympian family - forged in patricide and infidelity - she's known as the trashy one. Matt Berry (What We Do in The Shadows) is "Shlub," Tyrannis' father, a mantitaur (half centaur [horse + human], half manticore [lion + human + scorpion]). He is oversexed and underemployed, claims to be an artist and has literally never paid for anything, in any sense of that word, for his entire life. Pam Murphy (Mapleworth Murders) voices "Stupendous," Tyrannis' half-sister, daughter of Deliria and a cyclops. Duncan Trussell (The Midnight Gospel) plays "Hippocampus," Tyrannis' half-brother, offspring of Shlub and a mermaid, and, obviously, a hot mess, biologically speaking.
