Comedic Talent Added to New Year's Rockin' Eve; Bridgerton Returns for Season 3 in Spring

ABC and Dick Clark Productions announced that two-time GRAMMY(R) Award-winning hip-hop icon LL COOL J, featuring DJ Z-Trip, will perform just before midnight from New York's Times Square as part of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2024, joining Megan Thee Stallion, Jelly Roll, Sabrina Carpenter and Tyla. In addition, GRAMMY Award-winning female rap artist Cardi B will join the lineup from the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. New Year's Rockin' Eve is also introducing a new vertical of comedic show content with Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias, Matt Friend, Ms. Pat and Sebastian Maniscalco joining the show for hilarious commentary on the past year.

The nation's most-watched New Year's Eve celebration, Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2024, airs Sunday, Dec. 31, live on ABC beginning at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Happy Christmas and Anniversary to Bridgerton! Netflix released teaser art and additional new images from Bridgerton Season 3 to celebrate the anniversary of the show's release. Bridgerton Season 3 returns for a steamy, two-part season in 2024 with 8 total episodes: Part 1 (Episodes 301-304) on May 16 and Part 2 (Episodes 305-308) on June 13.

From Shondaland and new showrunner, Jess Brownell, Bridgerton is back for its third season and finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. But he's disheartened to realize that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly. Complicating matters for Penelope is her rift with Eloise (Claudia Jessie), who has found a new friend in a very unlikely place, while Penelope's growing presence in the ton makes it all the more difficult to keep her Lady Whistledown alter ego a secret.

Las Vegas Coming to Peacock; Real Time Returns for Season 22 in January

Viva Las Vegas! All five seasons of the hit NBC 2003-2008 drama head to Peacock on December 29. This drama follows the elite surveillance team charged with maintaining the security of one of Las Vegas' largest casinos. They deal with card counters, costly streaks of random luck and rival casinos stealing away the high rollers. The cast of characters is fleshed out with an entertainment coordinator, an all-knowing valet, a pit boss and an elusive former competitor. Cast: James Caan, Josh Duhamel, Nikki Cox, James Lesure, Vanessa Marcil, Molly Sims, Tom Selleck.

Real Time with Bill Maher will return for its 22nd season Friday, January 19 at 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/7:00-8:00 p.m. PT, with a replay that night. Allowing Maher to offer his unique perspective on contemporary issues, the show continues with its opening monologue, one-on-one interviews with notable guests, roundtable discussions with panelists, and its signature "New Rules." Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! We're heading into Christmas week, but surprisingly, we have lots of news, including another possible media merger (that we imagine will face a lot of scrutiny), news about a programming format change for a digital broadcast network, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

• It seems that there are talks to merge Warner Bros and Paramount, though it is likely to face a lot of scrutiny. (Deadline)
• In related news (and probably something that would be necessary if the two media companies were to merge), it looks like BET (and related assets, including VH1) may be up for sale again, with Byron Allen interested in purchasing. (Variety)
• If you liked Run the Burbs when it aired on The CW, you won't be losing the chance to see it, as Hulu has now picked it up in an unrelated deal. (Deadline)
• The reboots never stop, and this week, there are talks of one for The X-Files. (Deadline)
• The network has remained quiet and refused to comment on it, but a major schedule change is coming to digital TV network Dabl (will it even still be called Dabl?) next week, and it includes nothing but episodes of mostly old UPN (and a tiny bit of The WB/The CW) sitcoms, including The Parkers, Half & Half, Moesha, Girlfriends, One on One, Sister, Sister, and The Game. • John Stamos is remembering Bob Saget as the anniversary of his death approaches. (Deadline)
• Since the approach that The CW was taking to air international sitcoms turned out to be a huge disaster, they're now turning to airing reruns of American broadcast network sitcoms that are still airing in primetime, or at least doing it in one case with The Conners. (SitcomsOnline)
• Three's Company is back on DVD again, and this time, it includes every episode of both spinoffs. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (DECEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 29)

• Night Court begins season 2 in January, but if you can't wait for a new episode, NBC has a Christmas one tonight, along with a sneak preview of the new sitcom Extended Family.

The Conners Reruns to Air on The CW Thursdays; Jo Koy to Host Golden Globes

Reruns of The Conners will be airing on The CW in...primetime. Yes, the ABC sitcom, which is entering its sixth season this February on ABC Wednesdays, will air from the beginning on The CW in a rarity. The CW will air The Conners Thursdays at 8:30pm & 9:00pm beginning January 4, sandwiched between Canadian comedies Son of a Critch and Children Ruin Everything to form a 2-hour comedy block on Thursdays. The Conners is also eligible to enter broadcast syndication later in 2024. The CW has also recently acquired reruns of the Hallmark drama Ride.

After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of Life in Landford in a way they never have before. This iconic family grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Starring John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Michael Fishman, Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, Jayden Rey, Jay R. Ferguson, Maya Lynne Robinson, Johnny Galecki and Katey Sagal.

The Golden Globes announced that premier stand-up comedian and actor Jo Koy will kick off award season as host of the highly-anticipated 81st Annual Golden GlobeE(R) Awards, airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at 8 PM, ET/5 PM, PT (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the special airs). Koy will host the show for the first time, bringing his unique charm, energy and unpredictable humor to the three-hour broadcast. Koy is widely recognized as a leading stand-up comedian, actor and author. His uniquely relatable comedy pulls inspiration from his colorful family and has reached audiences of all kinds and resulted in sold-out arenas around the world. His recent "Funny Is Funny World Tour" broke sales records at some of the most prestigious venues around the world. Previously, he released five highly rated stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, including his most recent Netflix special, Live from the Los Angeles Forum.

Koy starred in the Universal Picture film Easter Sunday, based on his own experiences and stand-up comedy. He has also appeared in Disney's Haunted Mansion and voiced the character Bendo in Netflix's animated film Monkey King. He'll next be voicing the character of the Monkey King in the animated feature film, Tiger's Apprentice premiering on Paramount+ Feb. 2, 2024.

Paramount Media Networks Holiday Marathons; Kevin James Gets Prime Video Special

Paramount Media Networks announced a festive and fun programming slate for the holidays beginning today - December 20, 2023 and is scheduled to air across Paramount Media Networks (MTV, CMT, Comedy Central, Paramount Network, Smithsonian Channel and TV Land). Audiences can get into the holiday spirit with holiday films from Love Actually to Scrooged as well as marathons of beloved series such as The Office, Seinfeld, South Park, and The Daily Show. Rewind TV January 2024 Schedule; Prime Video Announces The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy Premiere Date

Rewind TV has announced their radical new schedule starting January 1! We mentioned sister network's Antenna TV's January schedule, with Dear John, Mork and Mindy, The Facts of Life and The Drew Carey Show joining their line-up. Now we can announce that Welcome Back, Kotter will be moving from Antenna TV to Rewind TV beginning January 1 airing weekdays 11am-12pm and Saturdays from 11pm-1am, both replacing The Facts of Life, which moves to Antenna TV. Dear John & Mork and Mindy will be airing on both networks, while The Drew Carey Show is moving to Antenna TV like Facts. Prime Video announced the premiere date and revealed the series key art and first-look images for The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy (previously announced as The Hospital). All eight episodes of the adult animated sci-fi comedy from Emmy Award winning creator Cirocco Dunlap, and Maya Rudolph, Danielle Renfrew Behrens and Natasha Lyonne's Animal Pictures, will debut on February 23, 2024. Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, with animation by Titmouse Studios, the series, which has a two-season order, will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) has joined the cast as series regular, Dr. Sleech, alongside previously announced cast members Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne, Keke Palmer, Kieran Culkin, and Sam Smith.

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy follows Dr. Sleech and Dr. Klak - aliens, best friends, and intergalactically renowned surgeons - as they tackle anxiety-eating parasites, illegal time loops, and deep-space STIs. In Season One, doctors Sleech and Klak take on a highly dangerous and potentially groundbreaking case and, in doing so, put existence itself in jeopardy. Although considering their dismal personal lives, oblivion might be an improvement.

Apple TV+ Renews Platonic; Lisa Kudrow Joins Ray Romano in Netflix Comedy

Apple TV+ announced that Platonic, its hit half-hour comedy starring and executive produced by Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen, has been renewed for a second season. Co-created, directed and co-written by Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, the critically acclaimed first season of Platonic is now streaming globally on Apple TV+. Platonic follows a platonic pair of former best friends approaching midlife (Rogen and Byrne) who reconnect after a long rift. The duo's friendship becomes all consuming - and destabilizes their lives in a hilarious way. In addition to Rogen and Byrne, Platonic season one starred Luke Macfarlane, Tre Hale, Andrew Lopez and Carla Gallo. Platonic is produced by Sony Pictures Television, where Stoller's Global Solutions has an overall deal. Byrne, Rogen, Stoller, Delbanco and Conor Welch executive produce. The series marks the latest collaboration for Apple TV+ and Byrne, who also stars in Apple's dark comedy Platonic. In addition to Platonic, Rogen is set to star in an upcoming, untitled comedy series for Apple TV+ that he will write, direct and executive produce alongside Evan Goldberg.

Netflix announced that Emmy Award-winning actress Lisa Kudrow will star in No Good Deed, a new dark comedy series from creator and executive producer Liz Feldman (Dead to Me). She joins previously announced co-star Ray Romano. Lisa Kudrow (Friends, Time Bandits, Booksmart) will play "Lydia Morgan" - A highly-talented (and highly-strung) former concert pianist, Lydia is a devoted wife to Paul (Ray Romano) and loving-though-flawed mother to their two children. She is distraught by the idea of selling their Los Feliz home, a place filled with happy memories and dark secrets. No Good Deed is a half hour, dark comedy that follows three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish style villa that they think will solve all their problems. But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare. 8 episodes have been ordered.

Anthony Anderson to Host Emmy Awards; Guest Stars for Grimsburg

Fox and the Television Academy announced jointly that Anthony Anderson will host the 75th Emmy(R) Awards. The three-hour, coast-to-coast live telecast from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles will air on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 15, 2024 (8:00-11:00 PM ET/5:00-8:00 PM PT) on Fox and will also be available the next day on Hulu. Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor Anthony Anderson is the host of new Fox game show We Are Family, from executive producer Jamie Foxx, premiering Wednesday, January 3 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on Fox. He starred for eight seasons in the multi-award nominated sitcom black-ish, where he portrayed Andre "Dre" Johnson and also served as executive producer. He recently completed a six-week journey around Europe with his mother for their reality series Trippin' with Anthony Anderson and Mama Doris. Anderson also partnered with Cedric the Entertainer to launch their own barbecue label, AC Barbeque, and documented their journey to become barbeque masters in the unscripted series Kings of BBQ which premiered in August 2023.

Anderson appeared in the Emmy Award-winning pair of live television specials, Live in Front of a Studio Audience. He first appeared as Henry Jefferson in Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear's 'All in the Family' and 'The Jeffersons,' and then as himself in the second special, Live in Front of a Studio Audience: 'All in the Family' and 'Good Times,' performing the opening song with Patti LaBelle. Anderson also hosted the game show, To Tell the Truth, a popular primetime re-imagination of the beloved classic game show of the same name, which ran for eight seasons. Additionally, he was executive producer of the black-ish spin off, grown-ish. Anderson reprised his role as Detective Kevin Barnard in 2022 on the highly anticipated 21st season of Law and Order. He has become familiar to audiences through roles in such prominent films as Transformers, The Departed, and The Big Year. Additionally, Anderson has appeared in Me, Myself and Irene, the Barbershop franchise, Scary Movie 3, Kangaroo Jack, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, Two Can Play That Game, Malibu's Most Wanted, My Baby's Daddy, Agent Cody Banks 2, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, Small Town Crime, The Star and the Academy Award nominated Ferdinand. Grimsburg to debut with a special preview event on Sunday, January 7, immediately following the Fox NFL doubleheader (8:00-8:30 PM ET/5:00-5:30 PM PT; Live To All Time Zones) on Fox. Joining The Animation Domination Block, the time-period premiere of Grimsburg is Sunday, February 18 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) on Fox.

Grimsburg, starring and executive-produced by Emmy Award winner Jon Hamm (Mad Men), centers on Marvin Flute (Hamm), who may be the greatest detective ever to catch a cannibal clown and correctly identify a mid-century modern armoire. Remembering Andre Braugher of Brooklyn Nine-Nine; Apple TV+ Comedy Palm Royale Premieres in March

Emmy-winning actor Andre Braugher, who starred as Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died. He died from lung cancer on December 11, having been diagnosed with it a few months prior. Mr. Braugher was 61.

Braugher starred as Captain Raymond Holt on the 2013-2021 police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It aired for five seasons on Fox from 2014 to 2018 before moving to NBC for seasons six to eight from 2019 to 2021. Created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur, it revolves around seven New York City Police Department (NYPD) detectives who are adjusting to life under their new commanding officer, the serious and stern Captain Raymond Holt. Captain Holt is the captain of the 99th precinct who takes pride in being the NYPD's first black gay police captain. Braugher was nominated four times for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020. He won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2014 and 2016. He appeared in a crossover episode with New Girl in 2016.

In 2019, he played James Evans in ABC's Live in Front of a Studio Audience: 'All in the Family' and 'Good Times'.

He starred as Detective Frank Pendleton for six seasons (1993-1998) on the NBC police drama Homicide: Life on the Street. Detective Frank Pendleton is a self-righteous, fiery, unyielding, Jesuit-educated police detective. Braugher won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1998. He left the series after the sixth season but returned for the reunion television film Homicide: The Movie in 2000.

Braugher starred as Dr. Ben Gideon on the 2000-2001 ABC medical drama Gideon's Crossing. He starred as Detective Marcellus Washington on the 2002-2004 CBS crime drama Hack. He starred as Owen Thoreau Jr. on th 2009-2011 TNT comedy-drama Men of a Certain Age. He played Captain Marcus Chaplin on the 2012-2013 ABC military drama Last Resort. In 2022, He starred as Ri'Chard Lane in the sixth season of The Good Fight.

In 2006, he starred as Nick Atwater in the mini-series Thief for FX Networks, winning a second Emmy for his performance. He starred as General George W. Mancheck in the 2008 A&E science fiction miniseries The Andromeda Strain.

He played Detective Winston Blake, a young detective assigned to Kojak's (Telly Savalas) command, in five Kojak television movies in 1989 and 1990. Some of his television guest appearances included Law & Order, The Practice, House (4 episodes), Miami Medical and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (6 episodes as Bayard Ellis).

Braugher's first film role was in the 1989 film Glory as Thomas Searles, a free, educated black man from the North who joins the first black regiment in the Union Army. Some of his other film credits included Primal Fear (1996), City of Angels (1998), Frequency (2000), Duets (2000), Poseidon (2006), The Mist (2007), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Salt (2010), The Gambler (2014) and She Said (2022). He received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his role as Benjamin O. Davis Jr. in the 1995 HBO television movie The Tuskegee Airmen.

Mr. Braugher was a talented and versatile actor. He was more known for his dramatic work, but he was able to show his comedy chops as Captain Raymond Holt for eight seasons on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. We thank him for the laughs and entertainment he brought us during his career. He will be greatly missed.

We also remember actor Ryan O'Neal. He starred as Bobby Tannen on Good Sports. He died at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California, on December 8. His cause of death was congestive heart failure, with cardiomyopathy listed as a contributing factor. Mr. O'Neal was 82.

O'Neal starred as Bobby Tannen with his then-partner Farrah Fawcett on the short-lived 1991 CBS sitcom Good Sports. The series is about Bobby Tannen, a once-famous former football player for the Green Bay Packers gone to seed and Gayle Roberts (Fawcett), an ex-Miss America, as mismatched anchors on an all-sports cable network called ASCN (All Sports Cable Network). The cast included Lane Smith, Brian Doyle-Murray, Cleavant Derricks, Christine Dunford, Paul Feig and William Katt.

He made his first television appearance guest appearance in 1960 in an episode of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Some of his other sitcom guest appearances included Bachelor Father, Leave it to Beaver (pictured above) and My Three Sons. He appeared as himself in two episodes The Larry Sanders Show in 1995.

O'Neal starred as Tal Garret on the 1962-1963 NBC western drama Empire. He starred as Rodney Harrington on the 1964-1969 ABC primetime soap opera Peyton Place. He had a semi-recurring role as Robert Roberts, Jr. in six episodes of the 2000-2001 TNT drama Bull. In 2003, he starred as Jerrold Fox, the father of Kate Fox (Alicia Silverstone), on the NBC romantic comedy-drama Miss Match. He had a recurring role as Max Keenan, the father of Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel), in 24 episodes of Bones from 2006 to 2017.

Some of his other drama guest appearances included The Untouchables (uncredited), General Electric Theater, The DuPont Show with June Allyson, Laramie, Two Faces West, Westinghouse Playhouse (3 episodes), The Virginian, Perry Mason, Wagon Train, Desperate Housewives and 90210 (3 episodes as Spence Montgomery).

O'Neal starred as Oliver Barrett IV in Love Story (1970). He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama for the role. Some of his other film credits included What's Up, Doc? (1972), Paper Moon (1973), Barry Lyndon (1975), A Bridge Too Far (1977), The Driver (1978), Oliver's Story (1978), The Main Event (1979), Irreconcilable Differences (1984), Chances Are (1989) and Faithful (1996).

Mr. O'Neal was one of the most popular stars in the 1970s. We thank him for his work on television and in films. He will be sorely missed.

Apple TV+ unveiled a first-look at Palm Royale, the highly anticipated Palm Beach-set comedy series stars Emmy and Academy Award nominee Kristen Wiig leading a renowned ensemble cast. Oscar and Emmy winners Laura Dern and Allison Janney join Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy and Kaia Gerber. With extra special guest star turns by the legendary Bruce Dern and the iconic, multiple-award winning Carol Burnett. Palm Royale makes its global debut on Apple TV+, premiering the first three episodes on March 20, 2024 followed by new episodes every Wednesday through May 8.

Palm Royale is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig) as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. 81st Golden Globe Nominations; Netflix Orders Too Much from Lena Dunham

The 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations are out, as the TV side was paced by HBO's Succession (nine nominations), FX's The Bear and Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, with five apiece. Other television nominations include first-time series such as Beef, Daisy Jones & the Six as well as returning contenders like Fargo, Ted Lasso and The Crown. The Globes was one of the first organizations to salute both film and TV work. Over the years, Globes voters have become known for early recognition of new series, such as Mad Men and Desperate Housewives. HBO/Max earned 17 nominations, closely followed by Netflix, with 15. Pedro Pascal, Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, Selena Gomez, Ali Wong, David Oyelowo, and Steven Yeun are among this year's television nominees. This marks the first ceremony since Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge acquired the awards show's assets, rights and properties. The nominations were announced yesterday morning by CBS stars Cedric The Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama. View the nominations here.

The 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards will take place January 7, 2024, at the Beverly Hilton, its home since 1961. The three-hour ceremony will air live on CBS, streamed on Paramount+ and be available on the CBS app, starting at 5 p.m. PT (8-11 p.m. ET). Emmy-winners Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment are the exec-producing show runners; Weiss will also direct. The Globes is a joint venture between DCP and Eldridge, respectively run by Jay Penske and Todd Boehly.

Netflix has announced Too Much, a new rom-com series created by multi award-winning writer, director, producer and actor Lena Dunham (Girls/Catherine Called Birdy) and husband Luis Felber. Too Much will be produced by Working Title Television, which is part of Universal International Studios, and Lena Dunham's Good Thing Going. The series will also feature original music from Luis Felber. Jessica is a New York workaholic in her mid-thirties, reeling from a broken relationship that she thought would last forever and slowly isolating everyone she knows. When every block in New York tells a story of her own bad behaviour, the only solution is to take a job in London, where she plans to live a life of solitude like a Bronte sister. But when she meets Felix - who is less Hugh Grant in Notting Hill and more Hugh Grant's drunken roommate - she finds that their unusual connection is impossible to ignore, even as it creates more problems than it solves. Now they have to ask themselves: do Americans and Brits actually speak the same language? From the creator of Girls and the producers of Love Actually, Too Much is an ex-pat rom-com for the disillusioned who wonder if true love is still possible, but sincerely hope that it is.

Megan Stalter (Hacks) will play the lead role of Jessica, and Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) will play Felix. Production will begin in the UK in 2024. 10 episodes have been ordered.
