NBC Celebrates Carol Burnett's 90th Birthday in April; Fox Renews The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers for 2 Seasons Each; Remembering Yoshio Yoda of McHale's Navy and Carole Cook of The Lucy Show

Paying tribute to a beloved national icon for her birthday, NBC will celebrate Carol Burnett's illustrious career with Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love. The two-hour special will air Wednesday, April 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and will also stream next day on Peacock. The special will be filmed at Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles. The star-studded event will feature an A-list lineup of musical performances and special guests who will come together to share their love for one of the most cherished comediennes in television history.

The evening will include musical performances from Bernadette Peters, Billy Porter, Jane Lynch, Katy Perry, Kristin Chenoweth and more. The musical tributes will pay homage to Carol's renowned career performances, including: "Old Friends," dedicated to Carol's 60-year friendship with Julie Andrews; "Only an Octave Apart," which Carol sang alongside Beverly Sills in the 1976 television special "Sills and Burnett at the Met"; Carol's memorable songs from the hit film "Annie"; and a tribute to her classic theme song, "I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together" from The Carol Burnett Show. Special guests attending this once-in-a-lifetime party include Aileen Quinn, Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Bob Mackie, Cher, Ellen DeGeneres, Julie Andrews, Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Lily Tomlin, Marisa Tomei, Sofia Vergara, Steve Carell, Susan Lucci, Tracee Ellis Ross, Vicki Lawrence, and many more. The special will share some of the funniest and most memorable moments of Burnett's legendary career. From her Broadway debut in Once Upon a Mattress, her early appearances on The Garry Moore Show, her hit films The Four Seasons, A Wedding, Pete 'n' Tillie, her iconic role as Miss Hannigan in Annie, to her acclaimed sketch comedy series The Carol Burnett Show, which ran for 11 seasons on CBS and played an instrumental role in the evolution of comedy. Burnett's variety show co-star Vicki Lawrence will be in attendance, along with costume designer Bob Mackie. The Carol Burnett Show continues to make people laugh more than 40 years later with its incredibly funny sketches, including, most notably, the hysterical Gone with the Wind satire.

Fox Entertainment has ordered early renewals for hit 20th Television Animation series The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers. The three FOX Animation Domination fan-favorite series -- all produced by Disney Television Studios' 20th Television Animation -- have each received two additional seasons, continuing their long-time runs on Fox through the 2024-25 broadcast cycle. The renewals guarantee Seasons 14 and 15 for Bob's Burgers, the 22nd and 23rd Seasons of Family Guy and the record-setting 35th and 36th Seasons for The Simpsons, extending its standing as the longest-running scripted series in television history.

Japanese-born American actor and businessman Yoshio Yoda, who starred as Fuji Kobiaji on McHale's Navy, has died. He died in Fullerton, California, on January 13. Mr. Yoda was 88.

Yoda starred as Fuji Kobiaji on the 1962-1966 ABC sitcom McHale's Navy. Seaman 3rd Class Fujiwara "Fuji" Takeo Kobiaji is the lovable, boyish, Japanese prisoner of war and deserter from the Imperial Japanese Navy whom the PT-73 crew takes on as a de facto comrade and keeps hidden from Capt. Wallace (Wally) B. Binghamton (Joe Flynn) and almost everyone outside of McHale's gang.

The cast included Ernest Borgnine, Joe Flynn, Tim Conway, Bob Hastings, Carl Ballantine, Gary Vinson, Billy Sands, Edson Stroll, Jane Dulo (1962-1964), Gavin MacLeod (1962-1964), John Wright (1964-1966), Henry Beckman (1965-1966), Simon Scott (1965-1966), Dick Wilson (1965-1966), Jay Novello (1965-1966) and Peggy Mondo (1965-1966).

He starred as Sgt. Roy Tada in the 1962 film The Horizontal Liutenant. He played Fuji Kobiaji in the 1964 film McHale's Navy. He starred as Takeo "Fuji" Fugiwara in the 1965 film McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force.

His final acting credit was as Mr. Tenaka in the 1969 segment of Love, American Style titled "Love and the Letter." He was an associate producer for the 1970 film The Walking Major, which was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1971.

He was the assistant vice president of inventory and senior division manager for Toyota in Hawaii. From 2012 until his death, he lived in Fullerton, California.

Mr. Yoda was a fine comic performer on McHale's Navy. We thank him for the laughs and entertainment that he brought us on the series. He will be greatly missed.

Actress Carole Cook, who guest starred on The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy, has died. She died from heart failure in Beverly Hills, California, on January 11. Ms. Cook was 98.

Cook guest starred as Thelma Green in five episodes of The Lucy Show from 1963 to 1964. She played various characters in 13 other episodes from 1963 to 1968.

She played various characters in five episodes of Here's Lucy from 1969 to 1974. Some of her other sitcom guest appearances included The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, The New Phil Silvers Show (2 episodes), My World and Welcome to It, That Girl, Maude, Chico and the Man, Laverne & Shirley, The Love Boat, A Family for Joe and Strip Mall.

Some of her other television guest appearances included U.S. Marshal (2 episodes), Kentucky Jones, Daniel Boone, Sarge, McMillan & Wife (4 episodes), Baretta, Ellery Queen, Emergency!, Bronk, Starsky & Hutch, Charlie's Angels (2 episodes), Kojak, Darkroom, Strike Force, Trapper John, M.D. (1982), Knight Rider, Hart to Hart, Quincy, M.E. (2 episodes), The A-Team, Magnum, P.I. (1986), Dynasty (4 episodes), Cagney & Lacey (5 episodes), Murder, She Wrote (2 episodes) and Grey's Anatomy.

She played Grandma Helen in Sixteen Candles (1984). Some of her other film credits included Palm Springs Weekend (1963), The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964), American Gigolo (1980), Summer Lovers (1982) and Grandview, U.S.A. (1984).

Ms. Cook was a talented and funny actress. She was a long-time friend and protégée of Lucille Ball. We thank her for her work on television and in films. She will be deeply missed.

COZI TV's 3rd Rock 3rd of July Marathon and Rambler Sweepstakes; TV Legend Carol Burnett Joins Better Call Saul

In addition to the first episode, the red convertible served as a regular set and was key to several episodes of the Carsey-Werner Television-produced comedy, which premiered on NBC in 1996 and included 139 episodes over six seasons. Six-time Emmy(R) Award-winner and TV legend Carol Burnett will appear as a guest star in the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul, portraying a character named "Marion." In addition to Burnett, as previously announced, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, will appear reprising their Breaking Bad roles of "Walter White" and "Jesse Pinkman," respectively, as the show draws to its conclusion. The series, produced by Sony Pictures Television, returns for its final six episodes beginning Monday, July 11 at 9:00 pm ET/PT on AMC and AMC+ with the series finale on August 15. The final episodes will conclude the complicated journey and transformation of its compromised hero, Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), into criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. Fri-Yay: We Need to Be More Patient with New Sitcoms; Norman Lear to Receive The Carol Burnett Award at The Golden Globe Awards

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

A few weeks ago, NBC's Mr. Mayor premiered, the latest from the minds of Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the brilliant creators of the modern classic 30 Rock and the hysterical Netflix comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. As much as I loved 30 Rock and really enjoyed Kimmy Schmidt, I wasn't a big fan of the first few episodes of Mr. Mayor, which you could see in my review for the site a few weeks ago. However, I'm still more than willing to give the show a chance, because I see the potential in the series, both because of its creators and its all-star cast. And yet, I see many people have already given up on the show. It's a trend I've seen with many sitcoms in recent years. So I have to ask: why are we expecting sitcoms to be fully formed out of the gate, when so few are?

A big part of it, I think, is the streaming era, where shows tend to come out of the gate more fully formed, as seasons and sometimes entire series are often planned out from the start. But traditional sitcoms simply don't work that way. They film a pilot, then often don't get to work with new episodes for several months or even a year. During that time, the show is testing what does and doesn't work, sometimes relying on viewer feedback once its earliest episodes roll in, as well as things like focus tests and network suggestions. That's why so many of the best sitcoms, from The Office to Parks & Recreation to Seinfeld, start off so different than what they become. So to those of you giving up on Mr. Mayor, I urge you to give it a chance. If we keep ditching sitcoms early on and not giving them time to grow, we'll only have less and less sitcoms that stick around for more than a season.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced that Norman Lear will receive the Carol Burnett Award at The 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The television pioneer and political activist and philanthropist will become the third-ever recipient and accept the honor during the telecast airing on Sunday, Feb. 28 from 5-8 p.m. PT / 8-11 p.m. ET live on NBC. Chosen by the HFPA Board of Directors, the Carol Burnett Award is presented annually to an honoree who has made outstanding contributions to the television medium on or off the screen. As the television landscape continues to evolve with more thought-provoking programming, diverse roles and best in class content, the HFPA established the Carol Burnett Award to celebrate the medium's new Golden Age. Equivalent to its film accolade counterpart, the Cecil B. deMille Award, the top honor was first introduced at the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Previous recipients include Ellen DeGeneres (2020) and its namesake, Carol Burnett (2019).

Lear has had a dynamic career in television and film, and as a political and social activist and philanthropist. He is a World War II combat veteran, 2017 Kennedy Center Honoree, recipient of the National Medal of Arts in 1999, Peabody Lifetime Achievement Award winner in 2016 and a proud member of the inaugural group of inductees to the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1984. He has won six Primetime Emmy Awards. Lear began his television career in 1950 writing and producing programs, including The Colgate Comedy Hour and The Martha Raye Show before co-founding Tandem Productions where he took on roles as executive producer, writer and director for more than two decades. He was nominated for an Academy Award(R) in 1967 for his script for Divorce American Style. In 1970, CBS signed with Tandem to produce All in the Family, which earned four Emmys for Best Comedy Series, as well as the Peabody Award in 1977. All in the Family was followed by a succession of other television hit shows that include Maude, Sanford and Son, Good Times, The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Lear's shows were nominated for and won many Golden Globe Awards.

black-ish Returns with Special Episodes on Election; Shout! Factory TV and Pluto TV Launches The Carol Burnett Show Channel

The Johnsons and black-ish return to ABC with a special one-hour television special on Sunday, Oct. 4 from 10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT on ABC. The two back-to-back episodes, which will air ahead of the official season seven premiere, will follow the Johnsons as they navigate the upcoming election, with Junior (Marcus Scribner) embarking on his journey as a first-time voter and Dre (Anthony Anderson) launching an exploration into local politics. The special will be presented in part as an animated episode. Oscar® winner Matthew A. Cherry (Hair Love) is set to direct. An official premiere date for the highly anticipated seventh season will be announced shortly (airdate and timing are subject to the change due to the NBA Finals schedule).

In "Election Special Pt. 1," (10:00-10:30 p.m. EDT), Junior is excited for his first time voting but discovers he has been purged from the voter polls so he does a deep dive into why – trying to understand the systems in place for voter registration. “Election Special Pt. 1" is directed by Matthew A. Cherry and written by Eric Horsted. Then, in a special animated episode, "Election Special Pt. 2," (10:30-11:00 p.m. EDT), Dre's colleague Stevens (Peter Mackenzie) makes an ill-advised decision to run for Congress, so Dre enlists his family's help and campaigns against him but gets caught up with fundraising and private interest groups. "Election Special Pt. 2" is directed by Matthew A. Cherry and written by Graham Towers & Ben Deeb. In its upcoming seventh season, black-ish will continue to tell stories that shine a light on current events through the lens of the Johnson family, addressing the global pandemic, systemic racism and the movement for social justice and equality.

Carol Burnett Gets Netflix Series; Futurama on Syfy, Marathon on 4/20

Carol Burnett is back! Netflix announced that improv/sketch series A Little Help with Carol Burnett will premiere on May 4, 2018. Celebrity guests include: Julie Bowen, Candace Cameron Bure, Mark Cuban, Billy Eichner, Taraji P. Henson, Derek Hough, DJ Khaled, Lisa Kudrow, Brittany Snow, Wanda Sykes, and Finn Wolfhard. Netflix will release all 12 half-hour episodes at once. In this funny and endearing series, she will be joined by a group of the most honest and unfiltered people in the world - a gaggle of straight talking, entertaining 5-9 year old kids. These very opinionated "experts" weigh-in on a variety of relatable and humorous dilemmas brought in by everyday adults. Each episode will feature a celebrity contributor brave enough to bring in their own dilemma for the kids to comment on in front of a live audience. The show is co-hosted by comedian Russell Peters.

On Friday, April 20, SYFY falls under the trance of Futurama's Hypnotoad, the dangerously mesmerizing amphibian with the power to put humans into a zombie-like trance. MeTV Celebrates 50 Years of The Carol Burnett Show; Celebrity Big Brother Coming in Winter 2018

Fifty years ago today (September 11), Carol Burnett broke through the variety comedy glass ceiling to become a superstar with one of the greatest television shows of all time, The Carol Burnett Show. In honor of Ms. Burnett's historic achievement and her ongoing legacy, MeTV presents "Carol Burnett's Golden Anniversary," a special week-long tribute event. Each weeknight beginning tonight (Monday, September 11) through Friday, September 15, MeTV will air an episode featuring a different iconic character or skit that helped define the future of sketch comedy. Carol's sweet niece visits only to discover she's possessed in this parody of The Exorcist in the recurring sketch "As the Stomach Turns."

Wednesday, September 13
Mr. Tudball (Tim Conway) tries to teach Mrs. Wiggins (Carol Burnett) how to use the intercom.

Thursday, September 14
Eunice, Ed, and Mama play the game "Sorry!" in "In the Family," the sketch that gave birth to the successful spin-off Mama's Family.

Friday, September 15
In "Nora Desmond," Carol plays a washed-up silent film star doing a bug spray commercial.

CBS announced it will broadcast its first celebrity edition of reality hit Big Brother. The special winter edition will feature multiple episodes per week during a concentrated run and include the series' signature Head of Household and Power of Veto competitions and live evictions. Julie Chen will host. CBS All Access, the CBS Television Network's subscription video on demand and live-streaming service, will again share all the action from inside the house with its 24/7 live feed. Also, Pop TV will provide fans the exclusive live television broadcast of Big Brother After Dark, an unfiltered late-night feed from inside the house. Additional details regarding scheduling and casting will be announced at a later date. The celebrity edition of the series is in addition to Big Brother's milestone 20th season that will be broadcast in summer 2018.

Carol Burnett Coming to Help Netflix; Revised NBC and Fox Fall 2017 Premiere Dates

Comedy legend Carol Burnett is coming to the world's leading internet TV network with the original unscripted comedy A Little Help with Carol Burnett. Featuring pint-sized opinions from a panel of straight-talking 4-8-year-olds, Carol and her guests will reveal how a different generation solves life's biggest dilemmas. In each of the 12 half-hour episodes, both celebrities and everyday people will bring their real-life issues to a gaggle of kids who dish back hilarious, hard-hitting guidance--all in front of a live studio audience. The series will premiere in 2018.

NBC has fine-tuned a pair of timeslots for fall premiere. On Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 10pm (new date and time), comedy The Good Place will launch its second season with a special one-hour episode immediately following the two-hour season finale of America's Got Talent. Then, The Good Place will air in its regularly scheduled timeslot at 8:30 p.m. Thursday the following week on Sept. 28. On Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 8pm (new date), The Blacklist, begins its fifth season a week earlier than originally planned.

Fox has made some minor edits to the fall premiere dates, too. The Orville debuts with two-night premiere event Sunday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 17, immediately following NFL On Fox Doubleheaders and The O.T., LIVE to all time zones. Season four of Gotham will now premiere a week earlier on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 8:00PM ET/PT, followed by the time period premiere of Seth MacFarlane's new space adventure series, The Orville (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), on Fox. The Orville is a live-action, one-hour space adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows the exploits of The U.S.S. Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship. Its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the problems of everyday life.

SitcomsOnline Digest: ABC Orders Pilot for Sitcom Starring Carol Burnett; Lou Grant to Wrap Up on DVD

• ABC has ordered a pilot for Household Name, a sitcom that would star Carol Burnett and has a little bit of a similar idea to Hot in Cleveland. (TVLine)
• James Burrows isn't any closer to retirement, as he will be directing an upcoming pilot for NBC, and another one for CBS. (Deadline)
• The Big Bang Theory remains a powerful and dominant force on the CBS lineup, but every show has a bad day, and this week, the ratings for the latest episode (though still better than anything else it was competing against) hit a low not seen since the first season. (Hollywood Reporter)
• The ratings decline for The Big Bang Theory, however, probably isn't worth worrying about, as it is close to receiving a renewal for two more seasons. (Variety)
• Netflix has set May 19 as the date for the premiere of the third season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. (Deadline)
• Three's Company is turning 40 years old next month, and Antenna TV is ready to celebrate. (SitcomsOnline)

• We're honestly a little surprised to see that it is being completed on DVD before Rhoda (which has been stalled with no sign that the final season will ever be released), but Shout! Factory will be finishing up another successful spinoff of The Mary Tyler Moore Show with Lou Grant - The Final Season on May 9.

• Grace and Frankie - Season Two (DVD, $29.98): The Netflix series returns to DVD in this release.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Carol Burnett Sitcom in the Works; Final Season of Family Matters to Arrive on DVD

• Despite all of her success in television comedy, Carol Burnett has never actually had a regular role in a standard sitcom aside from recurring roles in series such as Mama's Family and Mad About You, but now, with a little help from Amy Poehler, she may finally be getting her starring role in a new ABC sitcom.  (Deadline)
• We're not even sure how this would even work, but CBS is working on a game show based upon the popular smartphone game, Candy Crush. (The Verge)
• The drama in morning news shows is always greater than the drama in (what is left) of the afternoon soap operas, it seems, and it continued this week as Billy Bush officially parted ways with NBC. (New York Times)
• Antenna TV has acquired both The Joey Bishop Show and Good Morning, World, but what is even bigger news about those acquisitions is that the acquisition of The Joey Bishop Show includes the first season of the series, which has typically been excluded in syndication for undisclosed reasons. • CBS is showing their confidence in a trio of new series, by giving them full seasons. (SitcomsOnline) 

• Miami Vice - The Complete Series (DVD, $69.98): Mill Creek brings a re-release of the classic 80s series back to DVD, remastered and with all of the original music intact. A Blu-ray version was also released a few weeks ago, and having seen this version, I can certainly say that the Blu-ray version is worth the upgrade if you have the previously released DVDs from Universal.
