Hallmark Channel Acquires Gilmore Girls; Freida Pinto to Star in Netflix Series

Hallmark Channel

Did someone say cozy, small town charm? Beginning August 25, pop culture sensation Gilmore Girls joins the Hallmark Channel lineup. Just in time for the fall, the Gilmore family and the beloved residents of Stars Hollow will add twice the warmth and joy to Hallmark Channel's widely adored slate of heartfelt programming.

Hallmark Channel viewers can watch Gilmore Girls from the very beginning on weekdays from 2-6pm and on weekends from 8-10am, in addition to special occasion marathons. Gilmore Girls debuted October 5, 2000, on The WB Network and quickly became a flagship series for the network and successor The CW over the course of seven acclaimed seasons. The show continues to capture the hearts of new generations of fans with its fast-paced dialogue, a town full of quirky but loveable characters, and a central mother-daughter duo that behaves more like best friends.

Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, Gilmore Girls follows the lives of coffee-loving single mother Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and her academically minded teenage daughter Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) in the fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow. In addition to Graham and Bledel, the cast throughout the series included Melissa McCarthy, Keiko Agena, Yanic Truesdale, Scott Patterson, Liza Weil, Jared Padalecki, Milo Ventimiglia, Matt Czuchry, Sean Gunn, and Kelly Bishop, with special appearances by Edward Herrman.

Freida Pinto

Netflix announced that Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire, Mr. Malcolm's List) will star as Parul Chaudhury in Unaccustomed Earth, from showrunner/writer Madhuri Shekar, director Ritesh Batra, executive producer John Wells and Warner Bros. Television, a new drama series executive-produced by John Wells (The Pitt, Shameless). Eight episodes have been ordered.

Inspired by the internationally beloved Jhumpa Lahiri short story collection of the same name, Unaccustomed Earth is an epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, desire, and belonging. Rich with nuance, passion, and unforgettable characters, Unaccustomed Earth invites you into the elite and insular Indian-American community of Cambridge, MA. SitcomsOnline Digest: CBS Cancels The Late Show; Gilmore Girls Headed to Hallmark

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we are learning of what could be the end of late night talk shows, hearing of a new acquisition by Hallmark, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • The big (and unexpected) news this week was that CBS has chosen to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and will not even be replacing him with a new host, but the bigger story here may be that we're likely in the last few years of broadcast networks having a late night talk show, and Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers may not go beyond the next three years. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • While the current dispute involving the streaming rights for South Park continues to play out in the US, Paramount+ (which is supposed to become the new home to the series in the US) has pulled the series from the service internationally. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Gilmore Girls is headed to Hallmark soon, though given Hallmark's track record with series that aren't Golden Girls and Reba, it remains to be seen how long it'll last. (Deadline)
  • Now that they'll be airing NBA games, Peacock is raising the price of their subscription almost 40%. (Deadline)
  • Alan Bergman, the lyricist behind the theme songs for Good Times, Maude, and Alice, has died at 99. (Hollywood Reporter)
  • Antenna TV is set to celebrate the 60th anniversary of I Dream of Jeannie. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (JULY 19 - JULY 25)

  • Catchy Comedy has a "Christmas in July" binge this weekend, featuring Christmas episodes of classic comedies.
  • The new seasons of South Park and Digman arrive Wednesday on Comedy Central (maybe, assuming the creators of South Park don't walk out by then).
  • ABC has season premieres of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Match Game (with a new host) on Wednesday.

The Golden Bachelor returns Wednesday, September 24, with a two-hour premiere featuring new leading man Mel Owens, followed by a new season of Shark Tank. The sophomore season of Shifting Gears and a new season of Emmy and Golden Globe(R) Award-winning comedy Abbott Elementary join Wednesday nights beginning October 1.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end in May 2026 at the close of the 2025-26 broadcast season. Colbert announced the news during tonight's taping at the Ed Sullivan Theater.

Official statement: "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end its historic run in May 2026 at the end of the broadcast season. We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire The Late Show franchise at that time. We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.

This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.

Our admiration, affection, and respect for the talents of Stephen Colbert and his incredible team made this agonizing decision even more difficult. Stephen has taken CBS late night by storm with cutting-edge comedy, a must-watch monologue and interviews with leaders in entertainment, politics, news and newsmakers across all areas. The show has been #1 in late night for nine straight seasons; Stephen's comedy resonates daily across digital and social media; and the broadcast is a staple of the nation's zeitgeist.

The accomplishments of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert are memorable and significant in performance, quality and stature. With much gratitude, we look forward to honoring Stephen and celebrating the show over the next 10 months alongside its millions of fans and viewers."
