SitcomsOnline Digest: CBS Cancels The Late Show; Gilmore Girls Headed to Hallmark
Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we are learning of what could be the end of late night talk shows, hearing of a new acquisition by Hallmark, and more. Let's get going!
HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
- The big (and unexpected) news this week was that CBS has chosen to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and will not even be replacing him with a new host, but the bigger story here may be that we're likely in the last few years of broadcast networks having a late night talk show, and Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers may not go beyond the next three years. (Hollywood Reporter)
- While the current dispute involving the streaming rights for South Park continues to play out in the US, Paramount+ (which is supposed to become the new home to the series in the US) has pulled the series from the service internationally. (Hollywood Reporter)
- Gilmore Girls is headed to Hallmark soon, though given Hallmark's track record with series that aren't Golden Girls and Reba, it remains to be seen how long it'll last. (Deadline)
- Now that they'll be airing NBA games, Peacock is raising the price of their subscription almost 40%. (Deadline)
- Alan Bergman, the lyricist behind the theme songs for Good Times, Maude, and Alice, has died at 99. (Hollywood Reporter)
- Antenna TV is set to celebrate the 60th anniversary of I Dream of Jeannie. (SitcomsOnline)
- Catchy Comedy has a "Christmas in July" binge this weekend, featuring Christmas episodes of classic comedies.
- The new seasons of South Park and Digman arrive Wednesday on Comedy Central (maybe, assuming the creators of South Park don't walk out by then).
- ABC has season premieres of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Match Game (with a new host) on Wednesday.
