Fri-Yay: What Direction Are Sitcoms Headed In?; REELZ Fall 2018 Slate Includes John Ritter Special
by Vincent
In my last column, I discussed sitcom's past, and which decade represented the best that sitcoms had to offer. In this column, I'll be taking a look at where I think sitcoms are headed as we head towards the end of the 2010s into a new decade.
If we look back at the 2010s as a decade for sitcoms, you'll notice that, with the exception of The Big Bang Theory (which is the decade's most popular sitcom for sure but almost seems at odds with the rest of the most popular sitcoms of the decade), single-camera sitcoms were dominant. The decade was defined by shows like Modern Family and Parks and Recreation - and, when these shows premiered, their single-camera mockumentary format was inventive and fresh. Now, however, we've seen that format become somewhat overplayed and fall in popularity. The most popular and acclaimed sitcoms of the current moment are shows like Superstore, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place. These shows are still single-camera, but - while being unique for other reasons - are a bit more traditional in their storytelling format. However, these shows all have very unique, well-defined characters and fast-paced humor, so I would expect that to continue in the near future.
An interesting question mark is whether multi-camera sitcoms will make a comeback. The format has been slowly dying out, and seems to have hit its lowest point this decade - after single-cams began growing in popularity in the 2000s, the 2010s ramped up their production of them, particularly after shows like The Office and Modern Family became big hits, proving that single-camera sitcoms weren't just a niche trend, but something that could be transported to large audiences. CBS has really struggled to replace its multi-cam massive hit The Big Bang Theory with a similar replacement - most of their attempts to find "the next Big Bang Theory" have either started strong but wound up disappointing (such as 2 Broke Girls), completely misfired altogether (such as Kevin Can Wait). They found some success with the consistently solid performer Mom, but it's never quite been the giant hit CBS likely would want it to be. It's pretty telling that CBS's spin-off of Big Bang is actually a single-cam rather than a multi-cam. However, the revival of Roseanne, even with all of its controversy, may prove to be a turning point in favor of multi-camera sitcoms. Networks are desperate to find a show that appeals to wide audiences as much as the Roseanne reboot did without the political controversy, and considering how many viewers tuned into the multi-camera Roseanne reboot, a multi-camera sitcom could be the trick. Add that to the fact that Netflix's One Day at a Time and NBC's canceled but beloved The Carmichael Show have found a lot of fan and critical love, and the tides may be turning towards multi-camera sitcoms once again. So could the 2020s see a move back towards more traditional sitcoms? It's certainly possible, but I'd say that we should still expect the expiration of the 2000s and 2010s to continue - a balance of both, though, presents an interesting future for the sitcom.
REELZ announced its fall 2018 programming slate including new series, new specials, new episodes of returning series and the Stand Up To Cancer fundraising telecast airing for the first time on the network. Of note for us is their Behind Closed Doors specials. Every so often a star leaves an everlasting mark on culture and entertainment creating household names with stories that enthrall the public. This is especially true with the stories of John Ritter and Paul Walker who are the focus of two new Behind Closed Doors specials hosted by Natalie Morales. Rounding out the new specials is Casey Anthony showing viewers her shocking tale as told through unprecedented access to Anthony's inner circle and the law enforcement officials who worked the case.
Behind Closed Doors (New John Ritter episode premieres Saturday, September 8 at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT)- Behind Closed Doors original documentary specials hosted by Natalie Morales return with new episodes about the life and legacy of Three's Company star John Ritter and an intimate look at The Fast and the Furious star Paul Walker's life cut short by tragedy. Behind Closed Doors examines the lives of beloved celebrities utilizing the vast offerings of NBC News historical archives including rarely seen footage and revealing interviews with the celebrities themselves along with fresh interviews from those who knew or worked with them. Behind Closed Doors specials are produced by NBC News' Peacock Productions.
John Ritter: Behind Closed Doors premieres Saturday, September 8 at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT. As Jack Tripper on Three's Company, John Ritter established himself as one of the most gifted comedians of a generation, launching a prolific career in television and movies that would make him one of America's most beloved stars. But for a man so brilliant in comedy it was the tragedy of an undiagnosed aortic aneurysm that would cut his life short at just 54 years old. Through personal stories told by his closest friends and co-stars including Suzanne Somers, Joyce DeWitt, Henry Winkler, Peter Bogdanovich, Jimmy Kimmel and Kaley Cuoco, John Ritter: Behind Closed Doors reveals the generous spirit behind Ritter's undeniable talent, his legacy of laughter and his family's determination to save lives by raising awareness of the condition that caused his death. Paul Walker: Behind Closed Doors premieres Sunday, November 25 at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT. The Casey Anthony new documentary special premieres Sunday, December 9 at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT.

Starring Jennifer Garner (Love, Simon; Emmy(R) nominee and Golden Globe winner for Alias) and David Tennant (Jessica Jones, Doctor Who), the comedy series Camping launches its eight-episode season Sunday, Oct. 14, exclusively on HBO. The show is written and executive produced by Lena Dunham (creator and star of HBO's Girls), Jenni Konner (executive producer of HBO's Girls) and John Riggi, and is based on the British series of the same name created by Julia Davis and produced by Baby Cow Productions. The show will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and partners' streaming platforms.
Camping follows a group of old friends as they arrive at the underwhelming Brown Bear Lake campsite to celebrate a landmark birthday, sparking heightened emotions, latent tensions (sexual and otherwise) and memories they'd rather forget. Other series regulars include: Juliette Lewis (Oscar(R) nominee for Cape Fear), Arturo Del Puerto (Independence Day: Resurgence), Ione Skye (Fever Pitch), Janicza Bravo (directing credits include Lemon and HBO's Divorce) and Brett Gelman (Stranger Things). The recurring cast includes Bridget Everett (Trainwreck).
Kathryn McSorley-Jodell (Jennifer Garner) is a controlling LA mom who is far less cheerful than her Lululemons imply. She directs the weekend's proceedings with an iron grip, until she's faced with a woman who undoes all her best-laid plans. Walt (David Tennant) is an obedient husband and a loving father, the reliable lynchpin of his male social group, but below that reality lurks a subtle but growing discontent about what he's just signed up for. Jandice (Juliette Lewis) is a woman of many talents: a DJ, a reiki healer and a certified public accountant. Her life may seem ideal, but the reality is far less. Smack dab in the middle of a midlife crisis, the recently separated Miguel (Arturo Del Puerto) now expresses his instability through a youthful wardrobe and very strange life choices.
Carleen (Ione Skye) has spent her life in the shadows as Kathryn's sister. Timid and terrified, she must rely on her own strange passions, such as crocheting, to get her through the lonely days. Nina-Joy (Janicza Bravo) is the friend you go to for everything: best massage, best jeans, best oatmeal. But her tension with Kathryn over a breach of confidence threatens to topple the weekend. George (Brett Gelman) is loyal, goofy and infinitely game. He's as obsessed with his best friend, Walt, as he is with his wife, Nina-Joy, and just under the surface of this affable boom operator simmers barely repressed rage that can stop any singalong. Harry (Bridget Everett) is the tough-talking, nature-loving queen of the campsite; her passion for her wife, Nan, is surpassed only by her passion for all other women and an assortment of arms.

Fresh Off the Boat Coming to Freeform and UPtv; Comedy Central Gets King of the Hill and The Cleveland Show
Fresh Off the Boat reruns are coming to cable networks Freeform and UPtv later this year! No word on exact premiere dates, but could be late fall. Currently the series has 79 episodes through four seasons with the fifth season premiering this fall on ABC on Friday nights to kick-off TGIF. The series hasn't been sold yet for local broadcast syndication, but this cable deal could help that sell soon, as the series was eligible beginning this Fall. Fresh off the Boat is available also on Hulu with every episode on SVOD. The series is set in the late '90s. 1997 was a big year for Eddie Huang (Hudson Yang). He and his family vacationed in Taiwan, he had his first kiss, grieved the untimely death of his rap hero The Notorious B.I.G., graduated from middle school with his crew of misfits firmly intact and is ready to tackle the challenges of high school. Yet, just as the Huangs are finally settling into the suburban Orlando lifestyle, Louis (Randall Park) and Jessica (Constance Wu) make some big decisions that could change everything they know and love about the neighborhood they currently call home.
Comedy Central welcomes 20th Century Fox's Emmy(R) Award-winning King of the Hill and Emmy(R) Award-nominated The Cleveland Show to their stellar lineup. The #1 brand in comedy has acquired all thirteen seasons of the animated fan favorite King of the Hill, as well as all four seasons of the ensemble comedy The Cleveland Show. King of the Hill will premiere today (Monday, July 23) and The Cleveland Show is set to premiere in the fall.
King of the Hill, which originally aired on Fox from 1997 to 2010, depicts the life and times of Hank Hill, his family and their neighbors in the fictional suburb of Arlen, Texas, the heartland of America. A hard-working, loyal family man and proud Texan, Hank is assistant manager of Strickland Propane. He's an average Joe who sees himself as the voice of common sense and reason in a world of incompetent sales clerks, meddling bureaucrats and do-good liberals. Created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, King of the Hill is executive produced by Judge, Daniels, Howard Klein, Michael Rotenberg, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky.
The Cleveland Show, which originally aired on Fox from 2009 to 2013, follows the Brown-Tubbs blended family headed by Cleveland and his sassy high-school-sweetheart-turned-second-wife Donna. The rest of the household includes Donna's boy-crazy teenage daughter, Roberta; the 5-year-old with an old soul Rallo; and the lovable-but-not-so-bright Cleveland Jr. The Cleveland Show is executive produced by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Henry and Rich Appel. Kirker Butler serves as Co-Executive Producer and Kara Vallow and Brandi Young produced the series.

Showtime Gets Jillian Bell for Comedy; Rev Run Sitcom Preview
SHOWTIME has announced the casting of Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street) in a lead role of the half-hour comedy pilot The Wrong Mans, also starring and produced by Ben Schwartz (House of Lies) and written and executive produced by James Corden (The Late Late Show with James Corden), Mathew Baynton (Yonderland) and Ian Maxtone-Graham (The Simpsons). J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), BBC Studios' Angie Stephenson and Bad Robot's Ben Stephenson also serve as executive producers. Jim Field Smith (Episodes) is also executive producing and directing the pilot, which is based on the BBC series created by Corden and Baynton. The announcement was made today by Gary Levine, President of Programming, Showtime Networks Inc.
The Wrong Mans is an action-comedy about two ordinary office workers who have their menial existence turned upside-down by a chance phone call and a case of mistaken identity: "If you are not here by 5 o'clock, we will kill your wife." As the only people who can help, these two unlikely characters must find their inner hero in their quest to save not just themselves, but their loved ones and ultimately their whole town. Bell will play the part of Anna, based on the role (Phil) Corden played in the original. A co-worker of Sam (Schwartz), Anna is a somewhat deluded fantasist who lives with her mother and has such an empty life that she leaps at the opportunity to join Sam in saving the kidnapped woman. Whereas Sam just wants to get on with his quite ordinary life, Anna is desperate for excitement and extremely unrealistic about her capacity as an action hero.
