Anger Management Coming to Broadcast Syndication in Fall 2014; Boy Meets World Sequel Series, Girl Meets World, Possibly Coming to Disney Channel
We mentioned a few months ago that Anger Management, starring Charlie Sheen, had been picked up for a second season that will begin airing on FX in January 2013. The sitcom is the highest-rated new comedy series on cable in 2012, averaging 4.53 million total viewers and 2.5 million adults in the coveted 18-49 demo. It premiered in June as the most-watched primetime scripted comedy premiere in cable history. When it performed well in the ratings and reached certain thresholds, it was guaranteed an order of 90 additional episodes and sent the show into broadcast syndication.
The Fox Television Stations have acquired the show, which is produced by Lionsgate Television and distributed by Debmar-Mercury, for a fall 2014 premiere. Fox will air it in nine of their markets: WNYW/WWOR New York, KTTV/KCOP Los Angeles, WFLD/WPWR Chicago, KDFW/KDFI Dallas, WTTG/WDCA Washington, D.C., KRIV/KTXH Houston, KSAZ/KUTP Phoenix, KMSP/WFTC Minneapolis and WOFL/WRBW Orlando. The deal is for four years or throughout its network run, with an option for three more years. Fox will give the show double airings in access (7-8pm ET/6-7pm CT) and late fringe (11pm-2am ET/10pm-1am CT) Monday through Sunday.
Fox already has syndication's top-rated sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, in their lineup. As we reported a couple of years ago, Modern Family is coming to broadcast syndication in fall 2013. The Emmy Award-winning series will also be airing on USA Network next fall.
Disney Channel is in the very early stages of developing Girl Meets World, a sequel to Boy Meets World, according to TVLine. The original series ran for seven seasons on ABC from 1993-2000. Disney is trying to get two of the original stars, Ben Savage (Cory Matthews) and Danielle Fishel (Topanga Lawrence Matthews), to reprise their roles in the new series. Cory and Topanga were married in the seventh and final season. Girl Meets World would focus on their preteen daughter. Boy Meets World creator and executive producer Michael Jacobs is currently casting the project.
